We provide a simple method of constructing isogeny classes of abelian varieties over certain fields $k$ such that no variety in the isogeny class has a principal polarization. In particular, given a field $k$, a Galois extension $\ell$ of $k$ of odd prime degree $p$, and an elliptic curve $E$ over $k$ that has no complex multiplication over $k$ and that has no $k$-defined $p$-isogenies to another elliptic curve, we construct a simple $(p-1)$-dimensional abelian variety $X$ over $k$ such that every polarization of every abelian variety isogenous to $X$ has degree divisible by $p^2$. We note that for every odd prime $p$ and every number field $k$, there exist $\ell$ and $E$ as above. We also provide a general framework for determining which finite group schemes occur as kernels of polarizations of abelian varieties in a given isogeny class.
Our construction was inspired by a similar construction of Silverberg and Zarhin; their construction requires that the base field $k$ have positive characteristic and that there be a Galois extension of $k$ with a certain non-abelian Galois group.
Note: Theorem 3.2 in this paper is incorrect. The current version of the paper includes comments explaining the mistake.
We define three different isogeny graphs of principally polarized superspecial abelian varieties, prove foundational results on them, and explain their role in number theory and geometry. This is background to joint work with Yevgeny Zaytman on properties of these isogeny graphs for dimension $g>1$, especially the result that these graphs are connected, but not in general Ramanujan.
We consider the structures formed by isogenies of abelian varieties with polarizations that are not necessarily principal, specifically with the $[\ell]$-polarizations we have previously defined. Our primary interest is in superspecial abelian varieties, where the isogenies are related to quaternionic hermitian forms. We first consider isogeny graphs. We show that these $[\ell]$-isogeny graphs are a generalized Brandt graph and construct them entirely in terms of definite quaternion algebras. We prove that they are connected and give examples to show that the regular graphs obtained are someti…
Let A be an isogeny class of abelian surfaces over F_q with Weil polynomial x^4 + ax^3 + bx^2 + aqx + q^2. We show that A does not contain a surface that has a principal polarization if and only if a^2 - b = q and b < 0 and all prime divisors of b are congruent to 1 modulo 3. We use this result in a forthcoming paper in which we determine which isogeny classes of abelian surfaces over finite fields contain Jacobians.
We show that for a large class of rings $R$, the number of principally polarized abelian varieties over a finite field in a given simple ordinary isogeny class and with endomorphism ring $R$ is equal either to 0, or to a ratio of class numbers associated to $R$, up to some small computable factors. This class of rings includes the maximal order of the CM field $K$ associated to the isogeny class (for which the result was already known), as well as the order $R$ generated over $\mathbf{Z}$ by Frobenius and Verschiebung. For this latter order, we can use results of Louboutin to estimate the appr…
We extend to large contexts pertaining to Shimura varieties of Hodge type a result of Zink on the existence of lifts to characteristic 0 of suitable representatives of certain isogeny classes of abelian varieties endowed with Frobenius and other endomorphisms over $\dbF_{p^q}$, whose $p$-divisible groups in mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ are with complex multiplication.
The results in this paper imply that for every number field F and positive integer r, there exists an F-isogeny class of abelian varieties such that r divides the degree of every F-polarization on every abelian variety in the isogeny class.
We study for each fixed integer $g \ge 2$, for all primes $\ell$ and $p$ with $\ell \neq p$, finite regular directed graphs associated with the set of equivalence classes of $\ell$-marked principally polarized superspecial abelian varieties of dimension $g$ in characteristic $p$, and show that the adjacency matrices have real eigenvalues with spectral gaps independent of $p$. This implies a rapid mixing property of natural random walks on the family of isogeny graphs beyond the elliptic curve case and suggests a potential construction of the Charles-Goren-Lauter type cryptographic hash functio…
Given an abelian variety $A$ defined over a finite field $k$, we say that $A$ is "cyclic" if its group $A(k)$ of rational points is cyclic. In this paper we give a bijection between cyclic abelian varieties of an ordinary isogeny class $\mathcal{A}$ with Weil polynomial $f_{\mathcal{A}}$ and some classes of matrices with integer coefficients and having $f_{\mathcal{A}}$ as characteristic polynomial.
For a prime number $\ell$, an isogeny class $\mathcal{A}$ of abelian varieties is called $\ell$-cyclic if every variety in $\mathcal{A}$ have a cyclic $\ell$-part of its group of rational points. More generally, for a finite set of prime numbers $\mathcal{S}$, $\mathcal{A}$ is said to be $\mathcal{S}$-cyclic if it is $\ell$-cyclic for every $\ell\in\mathcal{S}$. We give lower and upper bounds on the fraction of $\mathcal{S}$-cyclic $g$-dimensional isogeny classes of abelian varieties defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, when $q$ tends to infinity.
In this paper we show that if $ϕ_{i}:A_{i}\rightarrow{A}$ is a semisimple pointed $K$-rational $\ell$-isogeny graph of order $n$ for a prime $\ell$, then the group of $\ell$-torsion points $A[\ell](\overline{K})$ contains a subspace of dimension $n$ generated by $K$-rational points. We also show that the same result is true for elliptic curves without the semisimplicity condition. Furthermore, we give an explicit counterexample for abelian varieties of higher dimension to show that the semisimplicity condition is indeed necessary.
We estimate the fraction of isogeny classes of abelian varieties over a finite field which have a given characteristic polynomial P(T) modulo l. As an application we find the proportion of isogeny classes of abelian varieties with a rational point of order l.
Let Z be a subvariety of the moduli space of principally polarised abelian varieties of dimension g over the complex numbers. Suppose that Z contains a Zariski dense set of points which correspond to abelian varieties from a single isogeny class. A generalisation of a conjecture of André and Pink predicts that Z is a weakly special subvariety. We prove this when dim Z = 1 using the Pila--Zannier method and the Masser--Wüstholz isogeny theorem. This generalises results of Edixhoven and Yafaev when the Hecke orbit consists of CM points and of Pink when it consists of Galois generic points.
Let $E$ be an ordinary elliptic curve over a finite field and $g$ be a positive integer. Under some technical assumptions, we give an algorithm to span the isomorphism classes of principally polarized abelian varieties in the isogeny class of $E^g$. The varieties are first described as hermitian lattices over (not necessarily maximal) quadratic orders and then geometrically in terms of their algebraic theta null point. We also show how to algebraically compute Siegel modular forms of even weight given as polynomials in the theta constants by a careful choice of an affine lift of the theta null…

We propose a simple criterion to know if an abelian variety $A$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is cyclic, i.e., it has a cyclic group of rational points; this criterion is based on the endomorphism ring End$_{\mathbb{F}_q}(A)$. We also provide a criterion to know if an isogeny class is cyclic, i.e., all its varieties are cyclic; this criterion is based on the characteristic polynomial of the isogeny class. We find some asymptotic lower bounds on the fraction of cyclic $\mathbb{F}_q$-isogeny classes among certain families of them, when $q$ tends to infinity. Some of these bounds req…
In this paper we study super-isolated abelian varieties, that is, abelian varieties over finite fields whose isogeny class contains a single isomorphism class. The goal of this paper is to (1) characterize whether a product of super-isolated varieties is super-isolated, and (2) characterize which super-isolated abelian varieties admit principal polarizations, and how many up to polarized isomorphisms.
It is well known that the Prym variety of an étale cyclic covering of a hyperelliptic curve is isogenous to the product of two Jacobians. Moreover, if the degree of the covering is odd or congruent to 2 mod 4, then the canonical isogeny is an isomorphism. We compute the degree of this isogeny in the remaining cases and show that only in the case of coverings of degree 4 it is an isomorphism.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a finite field $k$. The $k$-isogeny class of $A$ is uniquely determined by the Weil polynomial $f_A$. We assume that $f_A$ is separable. For a given prime number $\ell\neq\mathrm{char}\, k$ we give a classification of group schemes $B[\ell]$, where $B$ runs through the isogeny class, in terms of certain Newton polygons associated to $f_A$. As an application we classify zeta functions of Kummer surfaces over $k$.
We prove the isogeny property for special fibres of integral canonical models of compact Shimura varieties of $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$, and $D_n^{\dbR}$ type. The approach used also shows that many crystalline cycles on abelian varieties over finite fields which are specializations of Hodge cycles, are algebraic. These two results have many applications. First, we prove a variant of the conditional Langlands--Rapoport conjecture for these special fibres. Second, for certain isogeny sets we prove a variant of the unconditional Langlands--Rapoport conjecture (like for many basic loci). Third, we prov…
Since the 1970s, the complete classification (up to isogeny) of abelian varieties over finite fields with trivial group of rational points has been known from results of Madan--Pal and Robinson; with two exceptions these are all defined over $\mathbb{F}_2$. We determine the decomposition of these varieties into simple factors over an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_2$; this requires solving a polynomial equation in three roots of unity.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety with commutative endomorphism algebra over a finite field $k$. The $k$-isogeny class of $A$ is uniquely determined by a Weil polynomial $f_A$ without multiple roots. We give a classification of the groups of $k$-rational points on varieties from this class in terms of Newton polygons of $f_A(1-t)$.
Suppose $C$ is an isogeny class of abelian varieties over a finite field $k$. In this paper we give a partial answer to the question of which finite group schemes over $k$ occur as kernels of polarizations of varieties in $C$. We show that there is an element $I_C$ of a finite two-torsion group that determines which Jordan-Hölder isomorphism classes of finite commutative group schemes over $k$ contain kernels of polarizations. We indicate how the two-torsion group can be computed from the characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius endomorphism of the varieties in $C$, and we give some relative…
We construct, for every prime p, a function field K of characteristic p and an ordinary abelian variety A over K, with no isotrivial factors, that admits an etale self-isogeny of p-power degree. As a consequence, we deduce that there exist ordinary abelian varieties over function fields whose groups of points over the maximal purely inseparable extension is not finitely generated, answering in the negative a question of Thomas Scanlon.
We prove a "height-free" effective isogeny estimate for abelian varieties of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type. More precisely, let $g\in \mathbb{Z}^+$, $K$ a number field, $S$ a finite set of places of $K$, and $A,B/K$ $g$-dimensional abelian varieties with good reduction outside $S$ which are $K$-isogenous and of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. We show that there is a $K$-isogeny $A\to B$ of degree effectively bounded in terms of $g$, $K$, and $S$ only. We deduce among other things an effective upper bound on the number of $S$-integral $K$-points on a Hilbert modular variety.
In this paper we improve our previous results on classification of groups of points on abelian varieties over finite fields. The classification is given in terms of the Weil polynomial of abelian varieties in a given $k$-isogeny class.
We prove that for every field k and every positive integer n, there exists an absolutely simple n-dimensional abelian variety over k. We also prove an asymptotic result for finite fields: For every finite field k and positive integer n, we let S(k,n) denote the fraction of the isogeny classes of n-dimensional abelian varieties over k that consist of absolutely simple ordinary abelian varieties. Then for every n, the quantity S(F_q,n) approaches 1 as q approaches infinity over the prime powers.
We give a description of endomorphism rings of Weil restrictions of abelian varieties with respect to finite Galois extensions. The results are applied to study the isogeny decomposition of Weil restrictions.
This paper treats what we call `weak geometric liftings' of Galois representations associated to abelian varieties. This notion can be seen as a generalization of the idea of lifting a Galois representation along an isogeny of algebraic groups. The weaker notion only takes into account an isogeny of the derived groups and disregards the centres of the groups in question. The weakly lifted representations are required to be geometric in the sense of a conjecture of Fontaine and Mazur. The conjecture in question states that any irreducible geometric representation is a twist of a subquotient of …
For an abelian variety $A$ over an algebraically closed non-archimedean field $K$ of residue characteristic $p$, we show that the isomorphism class of the pro-étale perfectoid cover $\widetilde A=\varprojlim_{[p]}A$ is locally constant as $A$ varies $p$-adically in the moduli space. This gives rise to a pro-étale uniformisation of abelian varieties as diamonds \[A^\diamond=\widetilde A/T_pA\] that works uniformly for all $A$ without any assumptions on the reduction of $A$. More generally, we determine all morphisms between pro-finite-étale covers of abeloid varieties. For example, over $\mathb…
In this paper we study abelian varieties which correspond to CM points in the coarse moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties with multiplication by a maximal order in a quaternion algebra over a totally real number field. These are abelian varieties of even dimension with quaternion and complex multiplication. We describe them explicitly via isogenies to products of abelian varieties of smaller dimension together with estimates on the degree of the isogeny.
An automorphism of an abelian variety induces a decomposition of the variety up to isogeny. There are two such results, namely the isotypical decomposition and Roan's decomposition theorem. We show that they are essentially the same. Moreover, we generalize in a sense this result to abelian varieties with action of an arbitrary finite abelian group.
We consider the finite set of isogeny classes of $g$-dimensional abelian varieties defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with endomorphism algebra being a field. We prove that the class within this set whose varieties have maximal number of rational points is unique, for any prime even power $q$ big enough and verifying mild conditions. We describe its Weil polynomial and we prove that the class is ordinary and cyclic outside the primes dividing an integer that only depends on $g$. In dimension $3$, we prove that the class is ordinary and cyclic and give explicitly its Weil polynomial, …
The so-called class-invariant homomorphism $ψ$ measures the Galois module structure of torsors--under a finite flat group scheme $G$--which lie in the image of a coboundary map associated to an isogeny between (Néron models of) abelian varieties with kernel $G$. When the varieties are elliptic curves with semi-stable reduction and the order of $G$ is coprime to 6, is is known that the homomorphism $ψ$ vanishes on torsion points. In this paper, using Weil restrictions of elliptic curves, we give the construction, for any prime number $p>2$, of an abelian variety $A$ of dimension $p$ endowed wit…
In his 1982 paper, Ogus defined a class of cycles in the de Rham cohomology of smooth proper varieties over number fields. This notion is a crystalline analogue of $\ell$-adic Tate cycles. In the case of abelian varieties, this class includes all the Hodge cycles by the work of Deligne, Ogus, and Blasius. Ogus predicted that such cycles coincide with Hodge cycles for abelian varieties. In this paper, we confirm Ogus' prediction for some families of abelian varieties. These families include abelian varieties that have both prime dimension and nontrivial endomorphism ring. The proof is based on …
