Tsirelson's space $T$ is known to be distortable but it is open as to whether or not $T$ is arbitrarily distortable. For $n\in {\Bbb N}$ the norm $\|\cdot\|_n$ of the Tsirelson space $T(S_n,2^{-n})$ is equivalent to the standard norm on $T$. We prove there exists $K<\infty$ so that for all $n$, $\|\cdot\|_n$ does not $K$ distort any subspace $Y$ of $T$.
We give an expression for the norm of the space constructed by Tsirelson. The implicit equation satisfied by this norm is dual to the implicit equation for the norm of the dual of Tsirelson space given by Figiel and Johnson. The expression can be modified to give the norm of the dual of any mixed Tsirelson space. In particular, our results can be adapted to give the norm for the dual of Schlumprecht space.
We consider classical Tsirelson-type norms of $T[A_r,θ]$ and their modified versions on $\ell_p$ spaces. We show that for any $1<p<\infty$ there is a constant $λ_p$ such that considered Tsirelson-type norms do not $λ_p$-distort any of subspaces of $\ell_p$.
We investigate the existence of higher order \ell^1-spreading models in subspaces of mixed Tsirelson spaces. For instance, we show that the following conditions are equivalent for the mixed Tsirelson space X=T[(θ_n,S_n)_{n=1}^{\infty}] (1)Every block subspace of $X$ contains an \ell^1-S_ω-spreading model, (2)The Bourgain \ell^1-index I_b(Y) = I(Y) > ω^ω for any block subspace Y of X, (3)\lim_m\limsup_nθ_{m+n}/θ_n > 0 and every block subspace Y of X contains a block sequence equivalent to a subsequence of the unit vector basis of X. Moreover, if one (and hence all) of these conditions holds, th…
In this paper, we study minimality properties of partly modified mixed Tsirelson spaces. A Banach space with a normalized basis (e_k) is said to be subsequentially minimal if for every normalized block basis (x_k) of (e_k), there is a further block (y_k) of (x_k) such that (y_k) is equivalent to a subsequence of (e_k). Sufficient conditions are given for a partly modified mixed Tsirelson space to be subsequentially minimal and connections with Bourgain's \ell^{1}-index are established. It is also shown that a large class of mixed Tsirelson spaces fails to be subsequentially minimal in a strong…
Tsirelson's space $\mathcal{T}$ made its appearance in Banach space theory in 1974 soon to become one of the most significant counterexamples in the theory. Its structure broke the ideal pattern that analysts had conceived for a generic Banach space, thus giving rise to the era of pathological examples. Since then, many authors have contributed to the study of different aspects of this special space with an eye on better understanding its idiosyncrasies. In this paper we are concerned with the greedy-type basis structure of $\mathcal{T}$, a subject that had not been previously explored in the …
If αand βare countable ordinals such that β\neq 0, denote by \tilde{T}_{α,β} the completion of $c_{00}$ with respect to the implicitly defined norm ||x|| = max{||x||_{c_{0}}, 1/2 sup \sum_{i=1}^{j}||E_{i}x||}, where the supremum is taken over all finite subsets E_{1},...,E_{j} of $\mathbb{N}$ such that $E_{1}<...<E_{j}$ and {min E_{1},...,min E_{j}} \in S_β. It is shown that the Bourgain $\ell^{1}$-index of \tilde{T}_{α,β} is ω^{α+β.ω}. In particular, if α=ω^{α_{1}}. m_{1}+...+ω^{α_{n}}. m_{n} in Cantor normal form and α_{n} is not a limit ordinal, then there exists a Banach space whose \ell^{…
We study the modified and boundedly modified mixed Tsirelson spaces $T_M[({\cal F}_{k_n},θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty }]$ and $T_{M(s)}[({\cal F}_{k_n},θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty }]$ respectively, defined by a subsequence $({\cal F}_{k_n})$ of the sequence of Schreier families $({\cal F}_n)$. These are reflexive asymptotic $\ell_1$ spaces with an unconditio- nal basis $(e_i)_i$ having the property that every sequence $\{ x_i\}_{i=1}^n$ of normalized disjointly supported vectors contained in $\langle e_i\rangle_{i=n}^{\infty }$ is equivalent to the basis of $\ell_1^n$. We show that if $\limθ_n^{1/n}=1$ then the …
We give a complete classification of mixed Tsirelson spaces T[(F\_i, theta\_i)\_{i=1}^r ] for finitely many pairs of given compact and hereditary families F\_i of finite sets of integers and 0<theta\_i<1 in terms of the Cantor-Bendixson indexes of the families F\_i, and theta\_i (0< i < r+1). We prove that there are unique countable ordinal alpha and 0<theta<1 such that every block sequence of T[(F\_i, theta\_i)\_{i=1}^r ] has a subsequence equivalent to a subsequence of the natural basis of the T(S\_{omega^alpha},theta). Finally, we give a complete criterion of comparison in between two of th…
Suppose that (F_n)_{n=1}^{\infty} is a sequence of regular families of finite subsets of N and (θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty} is a nonincreasing null sequence in (0,1). The mixed Tsirelson space T[(θ_{n}, F_n)_{n=1}^{\infty}] is the completion of $c_{00}$ with respect to the implicitly defined norm ||x|| = max{||x||_{c_0}, sup_n sup θ_n \sum_{i=1}^{j}||E_{i}x||}, where the last supremum is taken over all finite subsets E_{1},...,E_{j} of N such that E_1 < >... <E_j and {min E_1,...,min E_j} \in F_n. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of higher order \ell ^1-spreading mode…
For each $n \in \mathbb{N}$ a Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{0,1}^n$ is constructed is having the property that every normalized weakly null sequence generates either a $c_0$ or $\ell_1$ spreading models and every infinite dimensional subspace has weakly null sequences generating both $c_0$ and $\ell_1$ spreading models. The space $\mathfrak{X}_{0,1}^n$ is also quasiminimal and for every infinite dimensional closed subspace $Y$ of $\mathfrak{X}_{0,1}^n$, for every $S_1,S_2,\ldots,S_{n+1}$ strictly singular operators on $Y$, the operator $S_1S_2\cdots S_{n+1}$ is compact. Moreover, for every subsp…
It is proved that if a Banach space $X$ has a basis $(e_n)$ satisfying every spreading model of a normalized block basis of $(e_n)$ is 1-equivalent to the unit vector basis of $\ell_1$ (respectively, $c_0$) then $X$ contains $\ell_1$ (respectively, $c_0$). Furthermore Tsirelson's space $T$ is shown to have the property that every infinite dimensional subspace contains a sequence having spreading model 1-equivalent to the unit vector basis of $\ell_1$. An equivalent norm is constructed on $T$ so that $\|s_1+s_2\|<2$ whenever $(s_n)$ is a spreading model of a normalized basic sequence in $T$.
We construct equivalent semi-norms of non-local Dirichlet forms on the Sierpiński gasket and apply these semi-norms to a convergence problem and a trace problem. We also construct explicitly a sequence of non-local Dirichlet forms with jumping kernels equivalent to $|x-y|^{-α-β}$ that converges exactly to local Dirichlet form.
In this note we give a simple proof that every subspace of L_p, 2<p<infinity, with an unconditional basis has an equivalent norm determined by partitions and weights. Consequently L_p has a norm determined by partitions and weights.
For an asymptotic $\ell_1$ space $X$ with a basis $(x_i)$ certain asymptotic $\ell_1$ constants, $δ_α(X)$ are defined for $α<ω_1$. $δ_α(X)$ measures the equivalence between all normalized block bases $(y_i)_{i=1}^k$ of $(x_i)$ which are $S_α$-admissible with respect to $(x_i)$ ($S_α$ is the $α^{th}$-Schreier class of sets) and the unit vector basis of $\ell_1^k$. This leads to the concept of the delta spectrum of $X$, $Δ(X)$, which reflects the behavior of stabilized limits of $δ_α(X)$. The analogues of these constants under all renormings of $X$ are also defined and studied. We investigate $Δ…
We extend to the non separable setting many characterizations of the Banach spaces admitting an equivalent norm with the property $(β)$ of Rolewicz. These characterizations involve in particular the Szlenk index and asymptotically uniformly smooth or convex norms. This allows to extend easily to the non separable case some recent results from the non linear geometry of Banach spaces.
Angular equivalence is introduced and shown to be an equivalence relation among the norms on a fixed real vector space. It is a finer notion than the usual (topological) notion of norm equivalence. Angularly equivalent norms share certain geometric properties: A norm that is angularly equivalent to a uniformly convex norm is itself uniformly convex. The same is true for strict convexity. Extreme points of the unit balls of angularly equivalent norms occur on the same rays, and if one unit ball is a polyhedron so is the other. Among norms arising from inner products, two norms are angularly equ…
Given a finite measure space $(Ω,Σ,μ)$, we show that any Banach space $X(μ)$ consisting of (equivalence classes of) real measurable functions defined on $Ω$ such that $f χ_A \in X(μ) $ and $ \|f χ_A \| \leq \|f\|, \, f \in X(μ), \ A \in Σ$, and having the subsequence property, is in fact an ideal of measurable functions and has an equivalent norm under which it is a Banach function space. As an application we characterize norms that are equivalent to a Banach function space norm.
We prove that a Banach space of continuous functions $C(K)$ has a renorming that is uniformly rotund in every direction (URED) if and only if the compact space $K$ supports a strictly positive measure
We present a construction that enables one to find Banach spaces $X$ whose sets $NA(X)$ of norm attaining functionals do not contain two-dimensional subspaces and such that, consequently, $X$ does not contain proximinal subspaces of finite codimension greater than one, extending the results recently provided by Read and Rmoutil. Roughly speaking, we construct an equivalent renorming with the requested properties for every Banach space $X$ where the set $NA(X)$ for the original norm is not "too large". The construction can be applied to every Banach space containing $c_0$ and having a countable…
In this paper under some growth condition we investigate the connection between RBMO and the Morrey spaces. We do not assume the doubling condition which has been a key property of harmonic analysis. We also obtain another type of equivalent norms.
We give a new class of equivalent norms for modulation spaces by replacing the window of the short-time Fourier transform by a Hilbert-Schmidt operator. The main result is applied to Cohen's class of time-frequency distributions, Weyl operators and localization operators. In particular, any positive Cohen's class distribution with Schwartz kernel can be used to give an equivalent norm for modulation spaces. We also obtain a description of modulation spaces as time-frequency Wiener amalgam spaces. The Hilbert-Schmidt operator must satisfy a nuclearity condition for these results to hold, and we…
We consider Lorentz-Karamata spaces, small and grand Lorentz-Karamata spaces, and the so-called $\mathcal{L}$, $\mathcal{R}$, $\mathcal{LL}$, $\mathcal{RL}$, $\mathcal{RL}$, and $\mathcal{RR}$ spaces. The quasi-norms for a function $f$ in each of these spaces can be defined via the non-increasing rearrangement $f^*$ or via the maximal function $f^{**}$. We investigate when these quasi-norms are equivalent. Most of the proofs are based on Hardy-type inequalities. As application we demonstrate how our general results can be used to establish interpolation formulae for the grand and small Lorentz…
Angular equivalence of norms is introduced by Kikianty and Sinnamon (2017) and is a stronger notion than the usual topological equivalence. Given two angularly equivalent norms, if one norm has a certain geometrical property, e.g. uniform convexity, then the other norm also possesses such a property. In this paper, we show further results in this direction, namely angular equivalent norms share the property of uniform non-squareness, and that angular equivalence preserves the exposed points of the unit ball. A discussion on the (equivalence of the) dual norms of angularly equivalent norms is a…
In this paper, we study norm almost periodic measures on locally compact Abelian groups. First, we show that the norm almost periodicity of $μ$ is equivalent to the equi-Bohr almost periodicity of $μ*g$ for all $g$ in a fixed family of functions. Then, we show that, for absolutely continuous measures, norm almost periodicity is equivalent to the Stepanov almost periodicity of the Radon--Nikodym density.
We prove two theorems about differentiable functions on the Banach space C(K), where K is compact. (i) If C(K) admits a non-trivial function of class C^m and of bounded support, then all continuous real-valued functions on C(K) may be uniformly approximated by functions of class C^m. (ii) If C(K) admits an equivalent norm with locally uniformly convex dual norm, then C(K) admits an equivalent norm which is of class C^infty (except at 0).
Let $X$ be an Asplund space. We show that the existence of an equivalent norm on $X$ having a strictly convex dual norm is equivalent to the dual unit sphere $S_{X^*}$ (equivalently $X^*$) possessing a non-linear topological property called ($*$), which was introduced by J. Orihuela, S. Troyanski and the author.
Let $A$ and $B$ be compact operators over a topological space $X$ and suppose that these operators are normal and have same distinct eigenvalues at each point. By obstruction theory, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for $A$ and $B$ to be strongly unitarily equivalent. When $X=S^1$, we also give a sufficient condition for $A$ and $B$ to be approximately unitarily equivalent with some assumption on their eigenvalues.
Relatively recently it was proved that if $Γ$ is an arbitrary set, then any equivalent norm on $c_0(Γ)$ can be approximated uniformly on bounded sets by polyhedral norms and $C^\infty$ smooth norms, with arbitrary precision. We extend this result to more classes of spaces having uncountable symmetric bases, such as preduals of the `discrete' Lorentz spaces $d(w,1,Γ)$, and certain symmetric Nakano spaces and Orlicz spaces. We also show that, given an arbitrary ordinal number $α$, there exists a scattered compact space $K$ having Cantor-Bendixson height at least $α$, such that every equivalent n…
We show that some derived $\mathrm{L}^1$ full groups provide examples of non simple Polish groups with the topological bounded normal generation property. In particular, it follows that there are Polish groups with the topological bounded normal generation property but not the bounded normal generation property.
We first investigate concentration and vanishing phenomena concerning Moser type inequalities in the whole plane which involve complete and reduced Sobolev norms. In particular we show that the critical Ruf inequality is equivalent to an improved version of the subcritical Adachi-Tanaka inequality which we prove to be attained. Then, we consider the limiting space $\mathcal{D}^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, completion of smooth compactly supported functions with respect to the Dirichlet norm $\|\nabla\cdot\|_2$, and we prove an optimal Lorentz-Zygmund type inequality with explicit extremals and from wh…
Equivalent conditions that make the normal cone maximal monotone are investigated in the general settings of locally convex spaces. Some consequences such as Bishop Phelps and sum representability results are presented in the last part.
We show that every infinite-dimensional Banach space with separable dual admits an equivalent norm which is weakly locally uniformly rotund but not locally uniformly rotund.
It is well known that an ordered normed vector space $X$ with normal cone $X_+$ has an order-preserving norm that is equivalent to the original norm. Such an equivalent order-preserving norm is given by \begin{equation} \sharp x \sharp = \max \{ d(x, X_+), d(x, - X_+)\}, \qquad x \in X. \end{equation} This paper explores the properties of this norm and of the half-norm $ψ(x) = d(x,-X_+)$ independently of whether or not the cone is normal. We use $ψ$ to derive comparison principles for the solutions of abstract integral equations, derive conditions for point-dissipativity of nonlinear positive …
We prove that an asymmetric normed space is never a Baire space if the topology induced by the asymmetric norm is not equivalent to the topology of a norm. More precisely, we show that a biBanach asymmetric normed space is a Baire space if and only if it is isomorphic to its associated normed space.
G. Godefroy asked whether, on any Banach space, the set of norm-attaining functionals contains a 2-dimensional linear subspace. We prove that a recent construction due to C.J. Read provides an example of a space which does not have this property. This is done through a study of the relation between the following two sentences where X is a Banach space and Y is a closed subspace of finite codimension in X: (A) Y is proximinal in X. (B) The annihilator of Y consists of norm-attaining functionals. We prove that these are equivalent if X is the Read's space. Moreover, we prove that any non-reflexi…
We prove that if $Y$ is a closed subspace of a Banach space $X$ such that $Y$ and $X/Y$ admit an equivalent asymptotically uniformly smooth norm, then $X$ also admits an equivalent asymptotically uniformly smooth norm. The proof is based on the use of the Szlenk index and yields a few other applications to renorming theory.
This paper contains results concerning the Borel reduction of the relation $E_0$ of eventual agreement between sequences of 0's and 1's, to the relation of permutative equivalence between basic sequences in a Banach space. For more clarity in this abstract, we state these results in terms of classification by real numbers. If $R$ is some (analytic) equivalence relation on a Polish space $X$, it is said that $R$ is classifiable (by real numbers) if there exists a Borel map $g$ from $X$ into the real line such that $x R x'$ if and only if $g(x)=g(x')$. If $R$ is not classifiable, there must be $…
Using the game approach to fragmentability, we give new and simpler proofs of the following known results: (a) If the Banach space admits an equivalent Kadec norm, then its weak topology is fragmented by a metric which is stronger than the norm topology. (b) If the Banach space admits an equivalent rotund norm, then its weak topology is fragmented by a metric. (c) If the Banach space is weakly locally uniformly rotund, then its weak topology is fragmented by a metric which is stronger than the norm topology.
We introduce a Banach rearrangement invariant (tail) quasy-norm by means of Hardy's (Cesaro) average on the (measurable) functions defined on some measurable space which is a slight generalization of classical Lorentz-Marcinkiewicz norm and find for it an equivalent norm expression.
In [K--S 1] it was shown that $$ \underset π \to {\text{Ave}} (\sum_{i=1}^{n}|x_i a_{π(i)}|^2)^{\frac {1}{2}} $$ is equivalent to an Orlicz norm whose Orlicz function is 2-concave. Here we give a formula for the sequence $a_1, a_2,....,a_n$ so that the above expression is equivalent to a given Orlicz norm.
We consider a normalized basis in a Banach space with the following property: any normalized block sequence of the basis has a subsequence equivalent to the basis. We show that under uniformity or other natural assumptions, a basis with this property is equivalent to the unit vector basis of $c_0$ or $\ell_p$. We also address an analogous problem for spreading models.
For each ordinal $ξ$ and each $1<p<\infty$, we offer a natural, ismorphic characterization of those spaces and operators which admit an equivalent $ξ$-$p$-asymptotically uniformly smooth norm. We also introduce the notion of $ξ$-asymptotically uniformly flat norms and provide an isomorphic characterization of those spaces and operators which admit an equivalent $ξ$-asymptotically uniformly flat norm. Given a compact, Hausdorff space $K$, we prove an optimal renormong theorem regarding the $ξ$-asymptotic smoothness of $C(K)$ in terms of the Cantor-Bendixson index of $K$. We also prove that for …
Let $X$ be a WCG Banach space admitting a $C^k$-Fr\' echet smooth norm. Then $X$ admits an equivalent norm which is simultaneously $C^1$-Fr\' echet smooth, LUR, and a uniform limit of $C^k$-Fr\' echet smooth norms. If $X=C([0,α])$, where $α$ is an ordinal, then the same conclusion holds true with $k=\infty$.
This article studies constructions of reproducing kernel Banach spaces (RKBSs) which may be viewed as a generalization of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs). A key point is to endow Banach spaces with reproducing kernels such that machine learning in RKBSs can be well-posed and of easy implementation. First we verify many advanced properties of the general RKBSs such as density, continuity, separability, implicit representation, imbedding, compactness, representer theorem for learning methods, oracle inequality, and universal approximation. Then, we develop a new concept of generalized …
The aim of this note is to present two results that make the task of finding equivalent polyhedral norms on certain Banach spaces, having either a Schauder basis or an uncountable unconditional basis, easier and more transparent. The hypotheses of both results are based on decomposing the unit sphere of a Banach space into countably many pieces, such that each one satisfies certain properties. Some examples of spaces having equivalent polyhedral norms are given.
We prove that if K is a Gruenhage compact space then C(K)* admits an equivalent, strictly convex dual norm. As a corollary, we show that if X is a Banach space and X* is the |.|-closed linear span of K, where K is a Gruenhage compact in the w*-topology and |.| is equivalent to a coarser, w*-lower semicontinuous norm on X*, then X* admits an equivalent, strictly convex dual norm. We give a partial converse to the first result by showing that if T is a tree, then C(T)* admits an equivalent, strictly convex dual norm if and only if T is a Gruenhage space. Finally, we present some stability proper…
We introduce a new topological property called (*) and the corresponding class of topological spaces, which includes spaces with $G_δ$-diagonals and Gruenhage spaces. Using (*), we characterise those Banach spaces which admit equivalent strictly convex norms, and give an internal topological characterisation of those scattered compact spaces $K$, for which the dual Banach space $C(K)^*$ admits an equivalent strictly convex dual norm. We establish some relationships between (*) and other topological concepts, and the position of several well-known examples in this context. For instance, we show…
We study some generalized metric properties of weak topologies when restricted to the unit sphere of some equivalent norm on a Banach space, and their relationships with other geometrical properties of norms. In case of dual Banach space $X^*$, we prove that there exists a dual norm such that its unit sphere is a Moore space for the weak$^*$-topology (has a G$_δ$-diagonal for the weak$^*$-topology, respectively) if, and only if, $X^*$ admits an equivalent weak$^*$-LUR dual norm (rotund dual norm, respectively).
An outstanding open question posed by Guha and Indyk in 2006 asks to characterize metric spaces in which distances can be estimated using efficient sketches. Specifically, we say that a sketching algorithm is efficient if it achieves constant approximation using constant sketch size. A well-known result of Indyk (J. ACM, 2006) implies that a metric that admits a constant-distortion embedding into $\ell_p$ for $p\in(0,2]$ also admits an efficient sketching scheme. But is the converse true, i.e., is embedding into $\ell_p$ the only way to achieve efficient sketching? We address these questions f…
