If αand βare countable ordinals such that β\neq 0, denote by \tilde{T}_{α,β} the completion of $c_{00}$ with respect to the implicitly defined norm ||x|| = max{||x||_{c_{0}}, 1/2 sup \sum_{i=1}^{j}||E_{i}x||}, where the supremum is taken over all finite subsets E_{1},...,E_{j} of $\mathbb{N}$ such that $E_{1}<...<E_{j}$ and {min E_{1},...,min E_{j}} \in S_β. It is shown that the Bourgain $\ell^{1}$-index of \tilde{T}_{α,β} is ω^{α+β.ω}. In particular, if α=ω^{α_{1}}. m_{1}+...+ω^{α_{n}}. m_{n} in Cantor normal form and α_{n} is not a limit ordinal, then there exists a Banach space whose \ell^{1}-index is ω^α.
We consider classical Tsirelson-type norms of $T[A_r,θ]$ and their modified versions on $\ell_p$ spaces. We show that for any $1<p<\infty$ there is a constant $λ_p$ such that considered Tsirelson-type norms do not $λ_p$-distort any of subspaces of $\ell_p$.
We investigate the existence of higher order \ell^1-spreading models in subspaces of mixed Tsirelson spaces. For instance, we show that the following conditions are equivalent for the mixed Tsirelson space X=T[(θ_n,S_n)_{n=1}^{\infty}] (1)Every block subspace of $X$ contains an \ell^1-S_ω-spreading model, (2)The Bourgain \ell^1-index I_b(Y) = I(Y) > ω^ω for any block subspace Y of X, (3)\lim_m\limsup_nθ_{m+n}/θ_n > 0 and every block subspace Y of X contains a block sequence equivalent to a subsequence of the unit vector basis of X. Moreover, if one (and hence all) of these conditions holds, th…
Suppose that (F_n)_{n=0}^{\infty} is a sequence of regular families of finite subsets of N such that F_0 contains all singletons, and (θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty} is a nonincreasing null sequence in (0,1). In this paper, we compute the Bourgain \ell^1 - index of the mixed Tsirelson space T(F_0,(θ_n, F_n)_{n=1}^{\infty}). As a consequence, it is shown that if ηis a countable ordinal not of the form ω^ξfor some limit ordinal ξ, then there is a Banach space whose \ell^1-index is ω^η. This answers a question of Judd and Odell.
Suppose that (F_n)_{n=1}^{\infty} is a sequence of regular families of finite subsets of N and (θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty} is a nonincreasing null sequence in (0,1). The mixed Tsirelson space T[(θ_{n}, F_n)_{n=1}^{\infty}] is the completion of $c_{00}$ with respect to the implicitly defined norm ||x|| = max{||x||_{c_0}, sup_n sup θ_n \sum_{i=1}^{j}||E_{i}x||}, where the last supremum is taken over all finite subsets E_{1},...,E_{j} of N such that E_1 < >... <E_j and {min E_1,...,min E_j} \in F_n. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of higher order \ell ^1-spreading mode…
To any pair ( M , theta ) where M is a family of finite subsets of N compact in the pointwise topology, and 0<theta < 1 , we associate a Tsirelson-type Banach space T_M^theta . It is shown that if the Cantor-Bendixson index of M is greater than n and theta >{1/n} then T_M^theta is reflexive. Moreover, if the Cantor-Bendixson index of M is greater than omega then T_M^theta does not contain any l^p, while if the Cantor-Bendixson index of M is finite thenT_M^theta contains some l^p or c_o . In particular, if M ={ A subset N : |A| leq n } and {1/n}<theta <1 then T_M^theta is isomorphic to some l^p…
We give criteria of total incomparability for certain classes of mixed Tsirelson spaces. We show that spaces of the form $T[(M_k,θ_k)_{k=1}^{\ell}]$ with index $i(M_k)$ finite are either $c_0$ or $\ell_p$ saturated for some $p$ and we characterize when any two spaces of such a form are totally incomparable in terms of the index $i(M_k)$ and the parameter $θ_k$. Also, we give sufficient conditions of total incomparability for a particular class of spaces of the form $T[(A_k,θ_k)_{k=1}^\infty]$ in terms of the asymptotic behaviour of the sequence $\Vert\sum_{i=1}^n e_i\Vert$ where $(e_i)$ is the…
Any regular mixed Tsirelson space $T(θ_n,S_n)_{\N}$ for which $\frac{θ_n}{θ^n} \to 0$, where $θ=\lim_n θ_n^{1/n}$, is shown to be arbitrarily distortable. Certain asymptotic $\ell_1$ constants for those and other mixed Tsirelson spaces are calculated. Also a combinatorial result on the Schreier families $(S_α)_{α< ω_1}$ is proved and an application is given to show that for every Banach space $X$ with a basis $(e_i)$, the two $Δ$-spectrums $Δ(X)$ and $Δ(X,(e_i))$ coincide.
In this paper, we study minimality properties of partly modified mixed Tsirelson spaces. A Banach space with a normalized basis (e_k) is said to be subsequentially minimal if for every normalized block basis (x_k) of (e_k), there is a further block (y_k) of (x_k) such that (y_k) is equivalent to a subsequence of (e_k). Sufficient conditions are given for a partly modified mixed Tsirelson space to be subsequentially minimal and connections with Bourgain's \ell^{1}-index are established. It is also shown that a large class of mixed Tsirelson spaces fails to be subsequentially minimal in a strong…
We study the modified and boundedly modified mixed Tsirelson spaces $T_M[({\cal F}_{k_n},θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty }]$ and $T_{M(s)}[({\cal F}_{k_n},θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty }]$ respectively, defined by a subsequence $({\cal F}_{k_n})$ of the sequence of Schreier families $({\cal F}_n)$. These are reflexive asymptotic $\ell_1$ spaces with an unconditio- nal basis $(e_i)_i$ having the property that every sequence $\{ x_i\}_{i=1}^n$ of normalized disjointly supported vectors contained in $\langle e_i\rangle_{i=n}^{\infty }$ is equivalent to the basis of $\ell_1^n$. We show that if $\limθ_n^{1/n}=1$ then the …
For each $n \in \mathbb{N}$ a Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{0,1}^n$ is constructed is having the property that every normalized weakly null sequence generates either a $c_0$ or $\ell_1$ spreading models and every infinite dimensional subspace has weakly null sequences generating both $c_0$ and $\ell_1$ spreading models. The space $\mathfrak{X}_{0,1}^n$ is also quasiminimal and for every infinite dimensional closed subspace $Y$ of $\mathfrak{X}_{0,1}^n$, for every $S_1,S_2,\ldots,S_{n+1}$ strictly singular operators on $Y$, the operator $S_1S_2\cdots S_{n+1}$ is compact. Moreover, for every subsp…
Two examples of asymptotic $\ell_{1}$ Banach spaces are given. The first, $X_{u}$, has an unconditional basis and is arbitrarily distortable. The second, $X$, does not contain any unconditional basic sequence. Both are spaces of the type of Tsirelson. We thus answer a question raised by W.T.Gowers.
We give a complete classification of mixed Tsirelson spaces T[(F\_i, theta\_i)\_{i=1}^r ] for finitely many pairs of given compact and hereditary families F\_i of finite sets of integers and 0<theta\_i<1 in terms of the Cantor-Bendixson indexes of the families F\_i, and theta\_i (0< i < r+1). We prove that there are unique countable ordinal alpha and 0<theta<1 such that every block sequence of T[(F\_i, theta\_i)\_{i=1}^r ] has a subsequence equivalent to a subsequence of the natural basis of the T(S\_{omega^alpha},theta). Finally, we give a complete criterion of comparison in between two of th…
We present condition on higher order asymptotic behaviour of basic sequences in a Banach space ensuring the existence of bounded non-compact strictly singular operator on a subspace. We apply it in asymptotic $\ell_p$ spaces, $1\leq p<\infty$, in particular in convexified mixed Tsirelson spaces and related asymptotic $\ell_p$ HI spaces.
Let $\mathscr{B}(X)$ denote the Banach algebra of bounded operators on $X$, where~$X$ is either Tsirelson's Banach space or the Schreier space of order $n$ for some $n\in\mathbb N$. We show that the lattice of closed ideals of~$\mathscr{B}(X)$ has a very rich structure; in particular $\mathscr{B}(X)$ contains at least continuum many maximal ideals. Our approach is to study the closed ideals generated by the basis projections. Indeed, the unit vector basis is an unconditional basis for each of the above spaces, so there is a basis projection $P_N\in\mathscr{B}(X)$ corresponding to each non-empt…
We introduce an ordinal index which measures the complexity of a weakly null sequence, and show that a construction due to J. Schreier can be iterated to produce for each alpha < omega_1, a weakly null sequence (x^{alpha}_n)_n in C(omega^{omega^{alpha}})) with complexity alpha. As in the Schreier example each of these is a sequence of indicator functions which is a suppression-1 unconditional basic sequence. These sequences are used to construct Tsirelson-like spaces of large index. We also show that this new ordinal index is related to the Lavrentiev index of a Baire-1 function and use the in…
For an asymptotic $\ell_1$ space $X$ with a basis $(x_i)$ certain asymptotic $\ell_1$ constants, $δ_α(X)$ are defined for $α<ω_1$. $δ_α(X)$ measures the equivalence between all normalized block bases $(y_i)_{i=1}^k$ of $(x_i)$ which are $S_α$-admissible with respect to $(x_i)$ ($S_α$ is the $α^{th}$-Schreier class of sets) and the unit vector basis of $\ell_1^k$. This leads to the concept of the delta spectrum of $X$, $Δ(X)$, which reflects the behavior of stabilized limits of $δ_α(X)$. The analogues of these constants under all renormings of $X$ are also defined and studied. We investigate $Δ…
It is proved that if a Banach space $X$ has a basis $(e_n)$ satisfying every spreading model of a normalized block basis of $(e_n)$ is 1-equivalent to the unit vector basis of $\ell_1$ (respectively, $c_0$) then $X$ contains $\ell_1$ (respectively, $c_0$). Furthermore Tsirelson's space $T$ is shown to have the property that every infinite dimensional subspace contains a sequence having spreading model 1-equivalent to the unit vector basis of $\ell_1$. An equivalent norm is constructed on $T$ so that $\|s_1+s_2\|<2$ whenever $(s_n)$ is a spreading model of a normalized basic sequence in $T$.
The main result of this article is a rigidity result pertaining to the spreading model structure for Banach spaces coarsely embeddable into Tsirelson's original space $T^*$. Every Banach space that is coarsely embeddable into $T^*$ must be reflexive and all its spreading models must be isomorphic to $c_0$. Several important consequences follow from our rigidity result. We obtain a coarse version of an influential theorem of Tsirelson: $T^*$ does not coarsely contain $c_0$ nor $\ell_p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$. We show that there is no infinite dimensional Banach space that coarsely embeds into eve…
A well known argument of James yields that if a Banach space $X$ contains $\ell_1^n$'s uniformly then $X$ contains $\ell_1^n$'s almost isometrically. In the first half of the paper we extend this idea to the ordinal $\ell_1$-indices of Bourgain. In the second half we use our results to calculate the $\ell_1$-index of certain Banach spaces. Furthermore we show that the $\ell_1$-index of a separable Banach space not containing $\ell_1$ must be of the form $ω^α$ for some countable ordinal $α$.
The relation between different notions measuring proximity to $\ell_1$ and distortability of a Banach space is studied. The main result states that a Banach space, whose all subspaces have Bourgain $\ell_1$ index greater than $ω^α$, $α<ω_1$, contains either an arbitrary distortable subspace or an $\ell_1^α$-asymptotic subspace.
A new hierarchy of Banach spaces $T_k(d,θ)$, $k$ any positive integer, is constructed using barriers in high dimensional Ellentuck spaces \cite{DobrinenJSL15} following the classical framework under which a Tsirelson type norm is defined from a barrier in the Ellentuck space \cite{Argyros/TodorcevicBK}. The following structural properties of these spaces are proved. Each of these spaces contains arbitrarily large copies of $\ell_\infty^n$, with the bound constant for all $n$. For each fixed pair $d$ and $θ$, the spaces $T_k(d,θ)$, $k\ge 1$, are $\ell_p$-saturated, forming natural extensions of…
This paper has three parts. First, we establish some of the basic model theoretic facts about $M_{\mathcal{T}}$, the Tsirelson space of Figiel and Johnson \cite{FJ}. Second, using the results of the first part, we give some facts about general Banach spaces. Third, we study model-theoretic dividing lines in some Banach spaces and their theories. In~particular, we show: (1) $M_{\mathcal{T}}$ has the \emph{non independence property} (NIP); (2) every Banach space that is $\aleph_0$-categorical up to small perturbations embeds $c_0$ or $\ell_p$ ($1\leqslant p<\infty$) almost isometrically; consequ…
We calculate ordinal $L_p$ index defined in "An ordinal L_p index for Banach spaces with an application to complemented subspaces of L_p" authored by J. Bourgain, H. P. Rosenthal and G. Schechtman, for Rosenthal's space $X_p$, $\ell_p$ and $\ell_2$. We show a subspace of $L_p$ $(2 < p < \infty)$ non isomorphic to $\ell_2$ embeds in $\ell_p$ if and only if its ordinal index is minimum possible. We also give a sufficient condition for a $\mathcal{L}_p$ subspace of $\ell_p\oplus\ell_2$ to be isomorphic to $X_p$.
We construct a class of minimal trees and use these trees to establish a number of coloring theorems on general trees. Among the applications of these trees and coloring theorems are quantification of the Bourgain $\ell_p$ and $c_0$ indices, dualization of the Bourgain $c_0$ index, establishing sharp positive and negative results for constant reduction, and estimating the Bourgain $\ell_p$ index of an arbitrary Banach space $X$ in terms of a subspace $Y$ and the quotient $X/Y$.
In this paper we survey some recent results concerning the numerical index $n(\cdot)$ for large classes of Banach spaces, including vector valued $\ell_p$-spaces and $\ell_p$-sums of Banach spaces where $1\leq p < \infty$. In particular by defining two conditions on a norm of a Banach space $X$, namely a Local Characterization Condition (LCC) and a Global Characterization Condition (GCC), we are able to show that if a norm on $X$ satisfies the (LCC), then $n(X) = \displaystyle\lim_m n(X_m).$ For the case in which $ \mathbb{N}$ is replaced by a directed, infinite set $S$, we will prove an analo…
We show that for spaces with 1-unconditional bases lushness, the alternative Daugavet property and numerical index~1 are equivalent. In the class of rearrangement invariant (r.i.)\ sequence spaces the only examples of spaces with these properties are $c_0$, $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$. The only lush r.i.\ separable function space on $[0,1]$ is $L_1[0,1]$; the same space is the only r.i.\ separable function space on $[0,1]$ with the Daugavet property over the reals.
For $α$ an ordinal and $1<p<\infty$, we determine a necessary and sufficient condition for an $\ell_p$-direct sum of operators to have Szlenk index not exceeding $ω^α$. It follows from our results that the Szlenk index of an $\ell_p$-direct sum of operators is determined in a natural way by the behaviour of the $ε$-Szlenk indices of its summands. Our methods give similar results for $c_0$-direct sums.
A theorem of Giesy and James states that $c_0$ is finitely representable in James' quasi-reflexive Banach space $J_2$. We extend this theorem to the $p$th quasi-reflexive James space $J_p$ for each $p \in (1,\infty)$. As an application, we obtain a new closed ideal of operators on $J_p$, namely the closure of the set of operators that factor through the complemented subspace $(\ell_\infty^1 \oplus \ell_\infty^2 \oplus...\oplus \ell_\infty^n \oplus...)_{\ell_p}$ of $J_p$.
We improve upon on a limit theorem for numerical index for large classes of Banach spaces including vector valued $\ell_p$-spaces and $\ell_p$-sums of Banach spaces where $1\leq p \leq \infty$. We first prove $ n_1(X) = \displaystyle \lim_m n_1(X_m)$ for a modified numerical index $n_1(\, .\,)$. Later, we establish if a norm on $X$ satisfies the local characterization condition, then $n(X) = \displaystyle\lim_m n(X_m).$ We also present an example of a Banach space where the local characterization condition is satisfied.
