In this paper we survey some recent results concerning the numerical index $n(\cdot)$ for large classes of Banach spaces, including vector valued $\ell_p$-spaces and $\ell_p$-sums of Banach spaces where $1\leq p < \infty$. In particular by defining two conditions on a norm of a Banach space $X$, namely a Local Characterization Condition (LCC) and a Global Characterization Condition (GCC), we are able to show that if a norm on $X$ satisfies the (LCC), then $n(X) = \displaystyle\lim_m n(X_m).$ For the case in which $ \mathbb{N}$ is replaced by a directed, infinite set $S$, we will prove an analogous result for $X$ satisfying the (GCC). Our approach is motivated by the fact that $ n(L_p(μ, X))= n(\ell_p(X)) = \displaystyle \lim_m n(\ell_p^m (X))$ \cite {aga-ed-kham}.
We give a lower bound for the numerical index of two-dimensional real spaces with absolute and symmetric norm. This allows us to compute the numerical index of the two-dimensional real $L_p$-space for $3/2\leq p\leq 3$.
We provide some new consequences on the Lipschitz numerical radius and index which were introduced recently. More precisely, we give some renorming results on the Lipschitz numerical index, introduce a concept of Lipschitz numerical radius attaining functions in order to show that the denseness fails for an arbitrary Banach space, and study a Lipschitz version of Daugavet centers. Furthermore, we discuss the Lipschitz numerical index of vector-valued function spaces, absolute sums of Banach spaces, the Köthe-Bochner spaces, and Banach spaces which contain a dense union of increasing family of …
Generalizing the notion of numerical range and numerical radius of an operator on a Banach space, we introduce the notion of joint numerical range and joint numerical radius of tuple of operators on a Banach space. We study the convexity of the joint numerical range. We show that the joint numerical radius defines a norm if and only if the numerical radius defines a norm on the corresponding space. Then we prove that on a finite-dimensional Banach space, the joint numerical radius can be retrieved from the extreme points. Furthermore, we introduce a notion of joint numerical index of a Banach …
We show that the numerical index of any operator ideal is less than or equal to the minimum of the numerical indices of the domain and the range. Further, we show that the numerical index of the ideal of compact operators or the ideal of weakly compact operators is less than or equal to the numerical index of the dual of the domain, and this result provides interesting examples. We also show that the numerical index of a projective or injective tensor product of Banach spaces is less than or equal to the numerical index of any of the factors. Finally, we show that if a projective tensor produc…
We prove that every commutative JB$^*$-triple has numerical index one. We also revisit the notion of commutativity in JB$^*$-triples to show that a JBW$^*$-triple $M$ has numerical index one precisely when it is commutative, while $e^{-1}\leq n(M) \leq 2^{-1}$ otherwise. Consequently, a JB$^*$-triple $E$ is commutative if and only if $n(E^*) =1$ (equivalently, $n(E^{**}) =1$). In the general setting we prove that the numerical index of each JB$^*$-triple $E$ admitting a non-commutative element also satisfies $e^{-1}\leq n(M) \leq 2^{-1}$, and the same holds when the bidual of $E$ contains a Ca…
Given Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, and a norm-one operator $G\in \mathcal{L}(X,Y)$, the numerical index with respect to $G$, $n_G(X,Y)$, is the greatest constant $k\geq 0$ such that $$\max_{|w|=1}\|G+wT\|\geq 1 + k \|T\|$$ for all $T\in \mathcal{L}(X,Y)$. We present some results on the set $\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{L}(X,Y))$ of the values of the numerical indices with respect to all norm-one operators on $\mathcal{L}(X,Y)$. We show that $\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{L}(X,Y))=\{0\}$ when $X$ or $Y$ is a real Hilbert space of dimension greater than one and also when $X$ or $Y$ is the space of bounded or compa…
In the previous papers \cite{HLWZ,KWZ}, the jump phenomena of the $j$-th eigenvalue were completely characterized for Sturm-Liouville problems. In this paper, we show that the jump number of these eigenvalue branches is exactly the Maslov index for the path of corresponding boundary conditions. Then we determine the sharp range of the $j$-th eigenvalue on each layer of the space of boundary conditions. Finally, we prove that the graph of monodromy matrix tends to the Dirichlet boundary condition as the spectral parameter goes to $-\infty$.
