This research announcement describes in very rough terms methods and a computer language under development, which can be used to prove the nonexistence of binary linear codes. Over a hundred new results have been obtained by the author. For example, there is no [29,11,10] code. The proof of this is roughly outlined.
Linear complementary dual codes (or codes with complementary duals) are codes whose intersections with their dual codes are trivial. We study binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes with the largest minimum weight among all binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes. We characterize binary linear complementary dual codes with the largest minimum weight for small dimensions. A complete classification of binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes with the largest minimum weight is also given for $1 \le k \le n \le 16$.
We give two methods for constructing many linear complementary dual (LCD for short) codes from a given LCD code, by modifying some known methods for constructing self-dual codes. Using the methods, we construct binary LCD codes and quaternary Hermitian LCD codes, which improve the previously known lower bound on the largest minimum weights.
It is shown that there does not exist a binary projective triply-even code of length $59$. This settles the last open length for projective triply-even binary codes. Therefore, projective triply-even binary codes exist precisely for lengths $15$, $16$, $30$, $31$, $32$, $45$--$51$, and $\ge 60$.
In this work, quadratic double and quadratic bordered double circulant constructions are applied to F_4 + uF_4 as well as F_4, as a result of which extremal binary self-dual codes of length 56 and 64 are obtained. The binary extension theorems as well as the ring extension version are used to obtain 7 extremal self-dual binary codes of length 58, 24 extremal self-dual binary codes of length 66 and 29 extremal self-dual binary codes of length 68, all with new weight enumerators, updating the list of all the known extremal self-dual codes in the literature.
Recently, Chang and Hyun obtained some classes of binary optimal codes via simplicial complexes. In this letter, we utilize posets of the disjoint union of two chains to construct binary optimal linear codes.
Some properties of perfect transitive binary codes of length 15 and extended perfect transitive binary codes of length 16 are presented for reference purposes.
We classify 8-divisible binary linear codes with minimum distance 24 and small length. As an application we consider the codes associated to nodal sextics with 65 ordinary double points.
In 2002, Tonchev first constructed some linear binary codes defined by the adjacency matrices of undirected graphs. So, graph is an important tool for searching optimum codes. In this paper, we introduce a new method of searching (proposed) optimum formally self-dual linear binary codes from circulant graphs.
In this work, connected cubic planar bipartite graphs and related binary self-dual codes are studied. Binary self-dual codes of length 16 are obtained by face-vertex incidence matrices of these graphs. By considering their lifts to the ring R_2 new extremal binary self-dual codes of lengths 64 are constructed as Gray images. More precisely, we construct 15 new codes of length 64. Moreover, 10 new codes of length 66 were obtained by applying a building-up construction to the binary codes. Codes with these weight enumerators are constructed for the first time in the literature. The results are t…
In this note, we demonstrate that every binary doubly even self-dual code of length $40$ can be realized as the residue code of some extremal Type II $\mathbb{Z}_4$-code. As a consequence, it is shown that there are at least $94356$ inequivalent extremal Type II $\mathbb{Z}_4$-codes of length $40$.
We show that no projective 16-divisible binary linear code of length 131 exists. This implies several improved upper bounds for constant-dimension codes, used in random linear network coding, and partial spreads.
In this work, we generalize the four circulant construction for self-dual codes. By applying the constructions over the alphabets F_2, F_2 + uF_2, F_4+uF_4, we were able to obtain extremal binary self-dual codes of lengths 40, 64 including new extremal binary self-dual codes of length 68. More precisely, 43 new extremal binary self-dual codes of length 68, with rare new parameters have been constructed.
We introduce an altered version of the four circulant construction over group rings for self-dual codes. We consider this construction over the binary field, the rings F_2 + uF_2 and F_4 + uF_4; using groups of order 3, 7, 9, 13, and 15. Through these constructions and their extensions, we find binary self-dual codes of lengths 32, 40, 56, 64, 68 and 80, all of which are extremal or optimal. In particular, we find five new self-dual codes of parameters [56, 28, 10], twenty-three extremal binary self-dual codes of length 68 with new weight enumerators and fifteen new self-dual codes of paramete…
Boolean functions can be used to construct binary linear codes in many ways, and vice versa. The objective of this short article is to point out a connection between the weight distributions of all projective binary linear codes and the Walsh spectra of all Boolean functions. New research problems are also proposed.
Linear complementary dual codes (or codes with complementary duals) are codes whose intersections with their dual codes are trivial. These codes were first introduced by Massey in 1964. Nowadays, LCD codes are extensively studied in the literature and widely applied in data storage, cryptography, etc. In this paper, we prove some properties of binary LCD codes using their shortened and punctured codes. We also present some inequalities for the largest minimum weight $d_{LCD}(n,k)$ of binary LCD [n,k] codes for given length n and dimension k. Furthermore, we give two tables with the values of $…
Diameter perfect codes form a natural generalization for perfect codes. They are based on the code-anticode bound which generalizes the sphere-packing bound. The code-anticode bound was proved by Delsarte for distance-regular graphs and it holds for some other metrics too. In this paper we prove the bound for non-binary constant-weight codes with the Hamming metric and characterize the diameter perfect codes and the maximum size anticodes for these codes. We distinguish between six families of non-binary diameter constant-weight codes and four families of maximum size non-binary constant-weigh…
Codes in finite projective spaces equipped with the subspace distance have been proposed for error control in random linear network coding. Here we collect the present knowledge on lower and upper bounds for binary subspace codes for projective dimensions of at most $7$. We obtain several improvements of the bounds and perform two classifications of optimal subspace codes, which are unknown so far in the literature.
Linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are linear codes that intersect with their dual codes trivially. We study the largest minimum weight $d_2(n,k)$ among all binary LCD $[n,k]$ codes and the largest minimum weight $d_3(n,k)$ among all ternary LCD $[n,k]$ codes. The largest minimum weights $d_2(n,5)$ and $d_3(n,4)$ are partially determined. We also determine the largest minimum weights $d_2(n,n-5)$, $d_3(n,n-i)$ for $i \in \{2,3,4\}$, and $d_3(n,k)$ for $n \in \{11,12,\ldots,19\}$.
It is proven that for any numbers n=2^m-1, m >= 4 and r, such that n - log(n+1)<= r <= n excluding n = r = 63, n = 127, r in {126,127} and n = r = 2047 there exists a propelinear perfect binary code of length n and rank r.
In this work, we apply the idea of composite matrices arising from group rings to derive a number of different techniques for constructing self-dual codes over finite commutative Frobenius rings. By applying these techniques over different alphabets, we construct best known singly-even binary self-dual codes of lengths 80, 84 and 96 as well as doubly-even binary self-dual codes of length 96 that were not known in the literature before.
The codewords of weight $10$ of the $[42,21,10]$ extended binary quadratic residue code are shown to hold a design of parameters $3-(42,10,18).$ Its automorphism group is isomorphic to $PSL(2,41)$. Its existence can be explained neither by a transitivity argument, nor by the Assmus-Mattson theorem.
All binary self-dual [44,22,8] codes with an automorphism of order 3 or 7 are classified. In this way we complete the classification of extremal self-dual codes of length 44 having an automorphism of odd prime order.
In this work, new construction methods for self-dual codes are given. The methods use the short Kharaghani array and a variation of it. These are applicable to any commutative Frobenius ring. We apply the constructions over the ring F_2 + uF_2 and self-dual Type I [64, 32, 12]_2-codes with various weight enumerators obtained as Gray images. By the use of an extension theorem for self-dual codes we were able to construct 27 new extremal binary self-dual codes of length 68. The existence of the extremal binary self-dual codes with these weight enumerators was previously unknown.
We study properties of binary codes with parameters close to the parameters of 1-perfect codes. An arbitrary binary $(n=2^m-3, 2^{n-m-1}, 4)$ code $C$, i.e., a code with parameters of a triply-shortened extended Hamming code, is a cell of an equitable partition of the $n$-cube into six cells. An arbitrary binary $(n=2^m-4, 2^{n-m}, 3)$ code $D$, i.e., a code with parameters of a triply-shortened Hamming code, is a cell of an equitable family (but not a partition) from six cells. As a corollary, the codes $C$ and $D$ are completely semiregular; i.e., the weight distribution of such a code depen…
An efficient algorithm for classification of binary self-dual codes is presented. As an application, a complete classification of the self-dual codes of length 38 is given.
Studying binary perfect codes we show the existence of homogeneous nontransitive codes. Thus, as far as perfect codes are concerned, the propelinear codes are strictly contained in transitive codes, wheresas homogeneous codes form a strict subclass of transitive codes. In the work we deduce a necessary and sufficient condition for transitivity of perfect binary codes of rank one more than that of Hamming code. The paper is in Russian.
Some mutually quasi-unbiased weighing matrices are constructed from binary codes satisfying certain conditions. Motivated by this, in this note, we study binary codes satisfying the conditions. The weight distributions of binary codes satisfying the conditions are determined. We also give a classification of binary codes of lengths $8,16$ and binary maximal codes of length $32$ satisfying the conditions. As an application, sets of $8$ mutually quasi-unbiased weighing matrices for parameters $(16,16,4,64)$ and $4$ mutually quasi-unbiased weighing matrices for parameters $(32,32,4,256)$ are cons…
The aim of this work is a systematic investigation of the possible parameters of quasi-perfect (QP) binary and ternary linear codes of small dimensions and preparing a complete classification of all such codes. First we give a list of infinite families of QP codes which includes all binary, ternary and quaternary codes known to is. We continue further with a list of sporadic examples of binary and ternary QP codes. Later we present the results of our investigation where binary QP codes of dimensions up to 14 and ternary QP codes of dimensions up to 13 are classified.
We present a construction of 1-perfect binary codes, which gives a new lower bound on the number of such codes. We conjecture that this lower bound is asymptotically tight.
We say that a binary linear code C has a geometric representation if there exists a two dimensional simplicial complex D such that C is a punctured code of the kernel ker D of the incidence matrix of D and dim C = dim ker D. We show that every binary linear code has a geometric representation that can be embedded into R^4. Moreover, we show that a binary linear code C has a geometric representation in R^3 if and only if there exists a graph G such that C equals the cut space of G. This is a polynomially testable property and hence we can conclude that there is a polynomial algorithm that decid…
Let D be the support design of the minimum weight of an extremal binary doubly even self-dual [24m,12m,4m+4] code. In this note, we consider the case when D becomes a t-design with t \geq 6.
Much work has been done to identify which binary codes can be represented by collections of open convex or closed convex sets. While not all binary codes can be realized by such sets, here we prove that every binary code can be realized by convex sets when there is no restriction on whether the sets are all open or closed. We achieve this by constructing a convex realization for an arbitrary code with $k$ nonempty codewords in $\mathbb{R}^{k-1}$. This result justifies the usual restriction of the definition of convex neural codes to include only those that can be realized by receptive fields t…
Using the method for constructing binary self-dual codes with an automorphism of order square of a prime number we have classified all binary self-dual codes with length 76 having minimum distance $d=14$ and automorphism of order 9. Up to equivalence, there are six self-dual $[76, 38, 14]$ codes with an automorphism of type $9$-$(8,0,4)$. All codes obtained have new values of the parameter in their weight enumerator thus more than doubling the number of known values.
Let $Ψ_{k,n}$ denote the number of inequivalent binary self-orthogonal $[n,k]$ codes. We present a method which allows us to compute $Ψ_{k,n}$ explicitly for a moderate $k$ and an arbitrary $n$. Included in this paper are explicit formulas for $Ψ_{k,n}$ with $k\le 5$.
In the 2017 paper by Dougherty, Kim, Ozkaya, Sok, and Solé about the linear programming bound for LCD codes the notion $\mathrm{LCD}[n,k]$ was defined for binary LCD $[n,k]$-codes. We find the formula for $\mathrm{LCD}[n,2]$.
It has been proven in a series of works that the order of the automorphism group of a binary [72,36,16] code does not exceed five. We obtain a parametrization of all self-dual binary codes of length 72 with automorphism of order 4 which can be extremal. We use extensive computations in MAGMA and on a supercomputer to show that an extremal binary code of length 72 does not have an element of order 4.
A triply even code is a binary linear code in which the weight of every codeword is divisible by 8. We show how two doubly even codes of lengths m_1 and m_2 can be combined to make a triply even code of length m_1+m_2, and then prove that every maximal triply even code of length 48 can be obtained by combining two doubly even codes of length 24 in a certain way. Using this result, we show that there are exactly 10 maximal triply even codes of length 48 up to equivalence.
Let C be an extremal binary doubly even self-dual code of length n and s(C) denote the largest integer t such that the support design of C holds a t-design for some weight. In this paper, we prove s(C) \leq 7.
In this work, we introduce the concept of distance between self-dual codes, which generalizes the concept of a neighbor for self-dual codes. Using the k-neighbors, we are able to construct extremal binary self-dual codes of length 68 with new weight enumerators. We construct 143 extremal binary self-dual codes of length 68 with new weight enumerators including 42 codes with gamma=8 in their W_{68,2} and 40 with gamma=9 in their W_{68,2}. These examples are the first in the literature for these gamma values. This completes the theoretical list of possible values for gamma in W_{68,2}.
We explore the connection between simple polytopes and self-dual binary codes via the theory of small covers. We first show that a small cover $M^n$ over a simple $n$-polytope $P^n$ produces a self-dual code in the sense of Kreck-Puppe if and only if $P^n$ is $n$-colorable and $n$ is odd. Then we show how to describe such a self-dual binary code in terms of the combinatorial information of $P^n$. Moreover, we can define a family of binary codes $\mathfrak{B}_k(P^n)$, $0\leq k\leq n$, from an arbitrary simple $n$-polytope $P^n$. We will give some necessary and sufficient conditions for $\mathfr…
