The codewords of weight $10$ of the $[42,21,10]$ extended binary quadratic residue code are shown to hold a design of parameters $3-(42,10,18).$ Its automorphism group is isomorphic to $PSL(2,41)$. Its existence can be explained neither by a transitivity argument, nor by the Assmus-Mattson theorem.
The paper describes a method to determine symmetrized weight enumerators of $p^m$-linear codes based on the notion of a disjoint weight enumerator. Symmetrized weight enumerators are given for the lifted quadratic residue codes of length 24 modulo $2^m$ and modulo $3^m$, for any positive $m$.
In this paper quadratic residue codes over the ring Fp + vFp are introduced in terms of their idempotent generators. The structure of these codes is studied and it is observed that these codes share similar properties with quadratic residue codes over finite fields. For the case p = 2, Euclidean and Hermitian self-dual families of codes as extended quadratic residue codes are considered and two optimal Hermitian self-dual codes are obtained as examples. Moreover, a substantial number of good p-ary codes are obtained as images of quadratic residue codes over Fp +vFp in the cases where p is an o…
We investigate the linear complexities of the periodic 0-1 infinite sequences in which the periods are the sequence of the parities of the spacings between quadratic residues modulo a prime p, and the sequence of the parities of the spacings between primitive roots modulo p, respectively. In either case, the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm running on MAPLE computer algebra software shows very good to perfect linear complexities.
A long standing problem has been to develop "good" binary linear codes to be used for error-correction. This paper investigates in some detail an attack on this problem using a connection between quadratic residue codes and hyperelliptic curves. One question which coding theory is used to attack is: Does there exist a c<2 such that, for all sufficiently large $p$ and all subsets S of GF(p), we have |X_S(GF(p))| < cp?
Quantum synchronizable codes are quantum error-correcting codes designed to correct the effects of both quantum noise and block synchronization errors. While it is known that quantum synchronizable codes can be constructed from cyclic codes that satisfy special properties, only a few classes of cyclic codes have been proved to give promising quantum synchronizable codes. In this paper, using quadratic residue codes and their supercodes, we give a simple construction for quantum synchronizable codes whose synchronization capabilities attain the upper bound. The method is applicable to cyclic co…
The Hamming weight enumerator function of the formally self-dual even, binary extended quadratic residue code of prime p = 8m + 1 is given by Gleason's theorem for singly-even code. Using this theorem, the Hamming weight distribution of the extended quadratic residue is completely determined once the number of codewords of Hamming weight j A_j, for 0 <= j <= 2m, are known. The smallest prime for which the Hamming weight distribution of the corresponding extended quadratic residue code is unknown is 137. It is shown in this paper that, for p=137 A_2m = A_34 may be obtained with out the need of …
We propose two types, namely Type-I and Type-II, quantum stabilizer codes using quadratic residue sets of prime modulus given by the form $p=4n\pm1$. The proposed Type-I stabilizer codes are of cyclic structure and code length $N=p$. They are constructed based on multi-weight circulant matrix generated from idempotent polynomial, which is obtained from a quadratic residue set. The proposed Type-II stabilizer codes are of quasi-cyclic (QC) structure and code length $N=pk$, where $k$ is the size of a quadratic residue set. They are constructed based on structured sparse-graphs codes derived from…
In this paper, we introduce a new definitions of the Gray weight and the Gray map for linear codes over $\mathbb{Z}_9+u\mathbb{Z}_9$ with $u^2=u$. Some results on self-dual codes over this ring are investigated. Further, the structural properties of quadratic residue codes are also considered. Two self-dual codes with parameters $[22,11,5]$ and $[24,12,9]$ over $\mathbb{Z}_9$ are obtained.
In this paper, we begin by reviewing some of the known properties of QQR codes and proved that $PSL_2(p)$ acts on the extended QQR code when $p \equiv 3 \pmod 4$. Using this discovery, we then showed their weight polynomials satisfy a strong divisibility condition, namely that they are divisible by $(x^2 + y^2)^{d-1}$, where $d$ is the corresponding minimum distance. Using this result, we were able to construct an efficient algorithm to compute weight polynomials for QQR codes and correct errors in existing results on quadratic residue codes. In the second half, we use the relation between the…
In this work, quadratic reside codes over the ring F2 +uF2 +u^2F2 with u^3 = u are considered. A duality and distance preserving Gray map from F2 + uF2 + u^2F2 to (F_2)^3 is defined. By using quadratic double circulant, quadratic bordered double circulant constructions and their extensions self- dual codes of different lengths are obtained. As Gray images of these codes and their extensions, a substantial number of new extremal self-dual binary codes are found. More precisely, thirty two new extremal binary self-dual codes of length 68, 363 Type I codes of parameters [72; 36; 12], a Type II [7…
Let $m\geq 2$ be any natural number and let $\mathcal{R}=\mathbb{F}_{p}+u\mathbb{F}_{p}+u^2\mathbb{F}_{p}+\cdots+u^{m-1}\mathbb{F}_{p}$ be a finite non-chain ring, where $u^m=u$ and $p$ is a prime congruent to $1$ modulo $(m-1)$. In this paper we study quadratic residue codes over the ring $\mathcal{R}$ and their extensions. A gray map from $\mathcal{R}$ to $\mathbb{F}_{p}^m$ is defined which preserves self duality of linear codes. As a consequence self dual, formally self dual and self orthogonal codes are constructed. To illustrate this several examples of self-dual, self orthogonal and form…
For a prime $p\ge 5$ let $q_0,q_1,\ldots,q_{(p-3)/2}$ be the quadratic residues modulo $p$ in increasing order. We study two $(p-3)/2$-periodic binary sequences $(d_n)$ and $(t_n)$ defined by $d_n=q_n+q_{n+1}\bmod 2$ and $t_n=1$ if $q_{n+1}=q_n+1$ and $t_n=0$ otherwise, $n=0,1,\ldots,(p-5)/2$. For both sequences we find some sufficient conditions for attaining the maximal linear complexity $(p-3)/2$. Studying the linear complexity of $(d_n)$ was motivated by heuristics of Caragiu et al. However, $(d_n)$ is not balanced and we show that a period of $(d_n)$ contains about $1/3$ zeros and $2/3$ o…
In this paper, the performance of quadratic residue (QR) codes of lengths within 100 is given and analyzed when the hard decoding, soft decoding, and linear programming decoding algorithms are utilized. We develop a simple method to estimate the soft decoding performance, which avoids extensive simulations. Also, a simulation-based algorithm is proposed to obtain the maximum likelihood decoding performance of QR codes of lengths within 100. Moreover, four important theorems are proposed to predict the performance of the hard decoding and the maximum-likelihood decoding in which they can explor…
The projective special linear group $\PSL_2(n)$ is $2$-transitive for all primes $n$ and $3$-homogeneous for $n \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$ on the set $\{0,1, \cdots, n-1, \infty\}$. It is known that the extended odd-like quadratic residue codes are invariant under $\PSL_2(n)$. Hence, the extended quadratic residue codes hold an infinite family of $2$-designs for primes $n \equiv 1 \pmod{4}$, an infinite family of $3$-designs for primes $n \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$. To construct more $t$-designs with $t \in \{2, 3\}$, one would search for other extended cyclic codes over finite fields that are invariant under…
We adress the problem of the algebraic decoding of any cyclic code up to the true minimum distance. For this, we use the classical formulation of the problem, which is to find the error locator polynomial in terms of the syndroms of the received word. This is usually done with the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm in the case of BCH codes and related codes, but for the general case, there is no generic algorithm to decode cyclic codes. Even in the case of the quadratic residue codes, which are good codes with a very strong algebraic structure, there is no available general decoding algorithm. For thi…
All extremal ternary codes of length 48 that have some automorphism of prime order $p\geq 5$ are equivalent to one of the two known codes, the Pless code or the extended quadratic residue code.
