We adress the problem of the algebraic decoding of any cyclic code up to the true minimum distance. For this, we use the classical formulation of the problem, which is to find the error locator polynomial in terms of the syndroms of the received word. This is usually done with the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm in the case of BCH codes and related codes, but for the general case, there is no generic algorithm to decode cyclic codes. Even in the case of the quadratic residue codes, which are good codes with a very strong algebraic structure, there is no available general decoding algorithm. For this particular case of quadratic residue codes, several authors have worked out, by hand, formulas for the coefficients of the locator polynomial in terms of the syndroms, using the Newton identities. This work has to be done for each particular quadratic residue code, and is more and more difficult as the length is growing. Furthermore, it is error-prone. We propose to automate these computations, using elimination theory and Grbner bases. We prove that, by computing appropriate Grbner bases, one automatically recovers formulas for the coefficients of the locator polynomial, in terms of the syndroms.
This paper defines cyclic and minimal derivative descendants (DDs) of an extended cyclic code from the derivative of the Mattson-Solomon polynomials, respectively. First, it demonstrates that the cyclic DDs are the same extended cyclic code. It allows us to perform soft-decision decoding for extended cyclic codes based on their cyclic DDs. Then, it proves that the minimal DDs are equivalent codes. It also allows us to perform soft-decision decoding based on the minimal DDs with permutations. Simulation results show that our proposed derivative decoding can be close to the maximum likelihood de…
We introduce the notion of the stopping redundancy hierarchy of a linear block code as a measure of the trade-off between performance and complexity of iterative decoding for the binary erasure channel. We derive lower and upper bounds for the stopping redundancy hierarchy via Lovasz's Local Lemma and Bonferroni-type inequalities, and specialize them for codes with cyclic parity-check matrices. Based on the observed properties of parity-check matrices with good stopping redundancy characteristics, we develop a novel decoding technique, termed automorphism group decoding, that combines iterativ…
A new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of linear quasi-cyclic codes over finite fields is proposed. It is based on spectral analysis and generalizes the Semenov- Trifonov bound in a similar way as the Hartmann-Tzeng bound extends the BCH approach for cyclic codes. Furthermore, a syndrome-based algebraic decoding algorithm is given.
We introduce a new method for decoding short and moderate length linear block codes with dense parity-check matrix representations of cyclic form, termed multiple-bases belief-propagation (MBBP). The proposed iterative scheme makes use of the fact that a code has many structurally diverse parity-check matrices, capable of detecting different error patterns. We show that this inherent code property leads to decoding algorithms with significantly better performance when compared to standard BP decoding. Furthermore, we describe how to choose sets of parity-check matrices of cyclic form amenable …
In this paper, we show that Quasi-Cyclic LDPC codes can efficiently accommodate the hybrid iterative/ML decoding over the binary erasure channel. We demonstrate that the quasi-cyclic structure of the parity-check matrix can be advantageously used in order to significantly reduce the complexity of the ML decoding. This is achieved by a simple row/column permutation that transforms a QC matrix into a pseudo-band form. Based on this approach, we propose a class of QC-LDPC codes with almost ideal error correction performance under the ML decoding, while the required number of row/symbol operations…
A list decoding algorithm for matrix-product codes is provided when $C_1,..., C_s$ are nested linear codes and $A$ is a non-singular by columns matrix. We estimate the probability of getting more than one codeword as output when the constituent codes are Reed-Solomon codes. We extend this list decoding algorithm for matrix-product codes with polynomial units, which are quasi-cyclic codes. Furthermore, it allows us to consider unique decoding for matrix-product codes with polynomial units.
In this paper, we study the impact of locality on the decoding of binary cyclic codes under two approaches, namely ordered statistics decoding (OSD) and trellis decoding. Given a binary cyclic code having locality or availability, we suitably modify the OSD to obtain gains in terms of the Signal-To-Noise ratio, for a given reliability and essentially the same level of decoder complexity. With regard to trellis decoding, we show that careful introduction of locality results in the creation of cyclic subcodes having lower maximum state complexity. We also present a simple upper-bounding techniqu…
We consider automorphism ensemble decoding (AED) of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Belief propagation (BP) decoding on the conventional factor graph is equivariant to the quasi-cyclic automorphisms and therefore prevents gains by AED. However, by applying small modifications to the parity-check matrix at the receiver side, we can break the symmetry without changing the code at the transmitter. This way, we can leverage a gain in error-correcting performance using an ensemble of identical BP decoders, without increasing the worst-case decoding latency. The proposed met…
Recently, error correcting codes in the erasure channel have drawn great attention for various applications such as distributed storage systems and wireless sensor networks, but many of their decoding algorithms are not practical because they have higher decoding complexity and longer delay. Thus, the automorphism group decoder (AGD) for cyclic codes in the erasure channel was introduced, which has good erasure decoding performance with low decoding complexity. In this paper, we propose new two-stage AGDs (TS-AGDs) for cyclic codes in the erasure channel by modifying the parity check matrix an…
The standard algebraic decoding algorithm of cyclic codes $[n,k,d]$ up to the BCH bound $t$ is very efficient and practical for relatively small $n$ while it becomes unpractical for large $n$ as its computational complexity is $O(nt)$. Aim of this paper is to show how to make this algebraic decoding computationally more efficient: in the case of binary codes, for example, the complexity of the syndrome computation drops from $O(nt)$ to $O(t\sqrt n)$, and that of the error location from $O(nt)$ to at most $\max \{O(t\sqrt n), O(t^2\log(t)\log(n))\}$.
A new lower bound on the minimum distance of q-ary cyclic codes is proposed. This bound improves upon the Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) bound and, for some codes, upon the Hartmann-Tzeng (HT) bound. Several Boston bounds are special cases of our bound. For some classes of codes the bound on the minimum distance is refined. Furthermore, a quadratic-time decoding algorithm up to this new bound is developed. The determination of the error locations is based on the Euclidean Algorithm and a modified Chien search. The error evaluation is done by solving a generalization of Forney's formula.
The cyclically equivariant neural decoder was recently proposed in [Chen-Ye, International Conference on Machine Learning, 2021] to decode cyclic codes. In the same paper, a list decoding procedure was also introduced for two widely used classes of cyclic codes -- BCH codes and punctured Reed-Muller (RM) codes. While the list decoding procedure significantly improves the Frame Error Rate (FER) of the cyclically equivariant neural decoder, the Bit Error Rate (BER) of the list decoding procedure is even worse than the unique decoding algorithm when the list size is small. In this paper, we propo…
An iterative decoding algorithm for convolutional codes is presented. It successively processes $N$ consecutive blocks of the received word in order to decode the first block. A bound is presented showing which error configurations can be corrected. The algorithm can be efficiently used on a particular class of convolutional codes, known as doubly cyclic convolutional codes. Due to their highly algebraic structure those codes are well suited for the algorithm and the main step of the procedure can be carried out using Reed-Solomon decoding. Examples illustrate the decoding and a comparison wit…
Two generalizations of the Hartmann--Tzeng (HT) bound on the minimum distance of q-ary cyclic codes are proposed. The first one is proven by embedding the given cyclic code into a cyclic product code. Furthermore, we show that unique decoding up to this bound is always possible and outline a quadratic-time syndrome-based error decoding algorithm. The second bound is stronger and the proof is more involved. Our technique of embedding the code into a cyclic product code can be applied to other bounds, too and therefore generalizes them.
The well-known approach of Bose, Ray-Chaudhuri and Hocquenghem and its generalization by Hartmann and Tzeng are lower bounds on the minimum distance of simple-root cyclic codes. We generalize these two bounds to the case of repeated-root cyclic codes and present a syndrome-based burst error decoding algorithm with guaranteed decoding radius based on an associated folded cyclic code. Furthermore, we present a third technique for bounding the minimum Hamming distance based on the embedding of a given repeated-root cyclic code into a repeated-root cyclic product code. A second quadratic-time prob…

Neural decoders were introduced as a generalization of the classic Belief Propagation (BP) decoding algorithms, where the Trellis graph in the BP algorithm is viewed as a neural network, and the weights in the Trellis graph are optimized by training the neural network. In this work, we propose a novel neural decoder for cyclic codes by exploiting their cyclically invariant property. More precisely, we impose a shift invariant structure on the weights of our neural decoder so that any cyclic shift of inputs results in the same cyclic shift of outputs. Extensive simulations with BCH codes and pu…
The use of skew polynomial rings allows to endow linear codes with cyclic structures which are not cyclic in the classical (commutative) sense. Whenever these skew cyclic structures are carefully chosen, some control over the Hamming distance is gained, and it is possible to design efficient decoding algorithms. In this paper, we give a version of the Hartmann-Tzeng bound that works for a wide class of skew cyclic codes. We also provide a practical method for constructing them with designed distance. For skew BCH codes, which are covered by our constructions, we discuss decoding algorithms. De…
We present novel decoding schemes for hard and soft decision decoding of block codes using the minimal weight codewords of the dual code. The decoding schemes will be described for cyclic codes where polynomials can be used, however, the modification for non-cyclic codes is possible and straight forward. The hard decision decoding calculates syndrome polynomials which are the product of the received polynomial with dual codewords. Proper cyclic shifts of these syndrome polynomials are obtained and the non-zero positions are counted componentwise for these shifts. The values of this counting ar…
This paper consists of three parts. The first part presents a large class of new binary quasi-cyclic (QC)-LDPC codes with girth of at least 6 whose parity-check matrices are constructed based on cyclic subgroups of finite fields. Experimental results show that the codes constructed perform well over the binary-input AWGN channel with iterative decoding using the sum-product algorithm (SPA). The second part analyzes the ranks of the parity-check matrices of codes constructed based on finite fields with characteristic of 2 and gives combinatorial expressions for these ranks. The third part ident…
Iterative decoding techniques have gain popularity due to their performance and their application in most communications systems. In this paper, we present a new application of our iterative decoder on the GPCB (Generalized Parallel Concatenated Block codes) which uses cyclic permutations. We introduce a new variant of the component decoder. After extensive simulation; the obtained result is very promising compared with several existing methods. We evaluate the effects of various parameters component codes, interleaver size, block size, and the number of iterations. Three interesting results a…
Cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. The decoding error probability and the undetected error probability are usually bounded by or given from the weight distributions of the codes. Most researches are about the determination of the weight distributions of cyclic codes with few nonzeros, by using quadratic form and exponential sum but limited to low moments. In this paper, we focus on the application of higher moments of the exponential sum to determine the weight distributions of a class of ternary cyclic codes with three nonzeros, combining with not only quadratic for…
As a subclass of linear codes, cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms, so they are widely used in many areas such as consumer electronics, data storage systems and communication systems. In this paper, we give a general construction of optimal p-ary cyclic codes which leads to three explicit constructions. In addition, another class of p-ary optimal cyclic codes are presented.
As a subclass of linear codes, cyclic codes have applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems, and communication systems as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, five families of three-weight ternary cyclic codes whose duals have two zeros are presented. The weight distributions of the five families of cyclic codes are settled. The duals of two families of the cyclic codes are optimal.
Cyclic codes have attracted a lot of research interest for decades as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, for an odd prime $p$, the weight distributions of two classes of $p$-ary cyclic codes are completely determined. We show that both codes have at most five nonzero weights.
Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems, and communication systems as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, a family of $p$-ary cyclic codes whose duals have three zeros are proposed. The weight distribution of this family of cyclic codes is determined. It turns out that the proposed cyclic codes have five nonzero weights.
In this paper cyclic codes are established with respect to the Mannheim metric over some finite rings by using Gaussian integers and the decoding algorithm for these codes is given.
We propose a full-rate iterated space-time code construction, to design 2n-dimensional codes from n-dimensional cyclic algebra based codes. We give a condition to determine whether the resulting codes satisfy the full-diversity property, and study their maximum likelihood decoding complexity with respect to sphere decoding. Particular emphasis is given to the cases n = 2, sometimes referred to as MIDO (multiple input double output) codes, and n = 3. In the process, we derive an interesting way of obtaining division algebras, and study their center and maximal subfield.
Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems, and communication systems as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, a class of three-weight cyclic codes over $\gf(p)$ whose duals have two zeros is presented, where $p$ is an odd prime. The weight distribution of this class of cyclic codes is settled. Some of the cyclic codes are optimal. The duals of a subclass of the cyclic codes are also studied and proved to be optimal.
Cyclic codes have been widely used in digital communication systems and consume electronics as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. The weight distribution of cyclic codes has been an important topic of study for many years. It is in general hard to determine the weight distribution of linear codes. In this paper, a class of cyclic codes with any number of zeros are described and their weight distributions are determined.
Because of efficient encoding and decoding algorithms, cyclic codes are an important family of linear block codes, and have applications in communica- tion and storage systems. However, their weight distributions are known only for a few cases mainly on the codes with one or two nonzeros. In this paper, the weight distributions of two classes of cyclic codes with three or four nonzeros are determined.
We investigate iterative low-resolution message-passing algorithms for quasi-cyclic LDPC codes with horizontal and vertical layered schedules. Coarse quantization and layered scheduling are highly relevant for hardware implementations to reduce the bit width of messages and the number of decoding iterations. As a novelty, this paper compares the two scheduling variants in combination with mutual information maximizing compression operations in variable and check nodes. We evaluate the complexity and error rate performance for various configurations. Dedicated hardware architectures for regular…
We give an algorithm for finding network encoding and decoding equations for error-free multicasting networks with multiple sources and sinks. The algorithm given is efficient (polynomial complexity) and works on any kind of network (acyclic, link cyclic, flow cyclic, or even in the presence of knots). The key idea will be the appropriate use of the delay (both natural and additional) during the encoding. The resulting code will always work with finite delay with binary encoding coefficients.
Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems, and communication systems as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. Perfect nonlinear monomials were employed to construct optimal ternary cyclic codes with parameters $[3^m-1, 3^m-1-2m, 4]$ by Carlet, Ding and Yuan in 2005. In this paper, almost perfect nonlinear monomials, and a number of other monomials over $\gf(3^m)$ are used to construct optimal ternary cyclic codes with the same parameters. Nine open problems on such codes are also presented.
In this article we see quasi-cyclic codes as block cyclic codes. We generalize some properties of cyclic codes to quasi-cyclic ones such as generator polynomials and ideals. Indeed we show a one-to-one correspondence between l-quasi-cyclic codes of length m and ideals of M_l(Fq)[X]/(X^m-1). This permits to construct new classes of codes, namely quasi-BCH and quasi-evaluation codes. We study the parameters of such codes and propose a decoding algorithm up to half the designed minimum distance. We even found one new quasi-cyclic code with better parameters than known [189, 11, 125]_F4 and 48 der…
Subspace codes have received an increasing interest recently due to their application in error-correction for random network coding. In particular, cyclic subspace codes are possible candidates for large codes with efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper we consider such cyclic codes and provide constructions of optimal codes for which their codewords do not have full orbits. We further introduce a new way to represent subspace codes by a class of polynomials called subspace polynomials. We present some constructions of such codes which are cyclic and analyze their parameters…
We design a non-commutative version of the Peterson-Gorenstein-Zierler decoding algorithm for a class of codes that we call skew RS codes. These codes are left ideals of a quotient of a skew polynomial ring, which endow them of a sort of non-commutative cyclic structure. Since we work over an arbitrary field, our techniques may be applied both to linear block codes and convolutional codes. In particular, our decoding algorithm applies for block codes beyond the classical cyclic case.
Polar codes were introduced in 2009 and proven to achieve the symmetric capacity of any binary-input discrete memoryless channel under low-complexity successive cancellation decoding. In this thesis, we construct cyclic polar codes based on a mixed-radix Cooley-Tukey decomposition of the Galois field Fourier transform. The main results are: we can, for the first time, construct, encode and decode polar codes that are cyclic, with their blocklength being arbitrary; for a given target block erasure rate, we can achieve significantly higher code rates on the erasure channel than the original pola…
In this paper, we consider how to partition the parity-check matrices (PCMs) to reduce the hardware complexity and computation delay for the row layered decoding of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes. First, we formulate the PCM partitioning as an optimization problem, which targets to minimize the maximum column weight of each layer while maintaining a block cyclic shift property among different layers. As a result, we derive all the feasible solutions for the problem and propose a tight lower bound $ω_{LB}$ on the minimum possible maximum column weight to evaluate a soluti…
In network coding a constant dimension code consists of a set of k-dimensional subspaces of F_q^n. Orbit codes are constant dimension codes which are defined as orbits of a subgroup of the general linear group, acting on the set of all subspaces of F_q^n. If the acting group is cyclic, the corresponding orbit codes are called cyclic orbit codes. In this paper we give a classification of cyclic orbit codes and propose a decoding procedure for a particular subclass of cyclic orbit codes.
We present an interleaving scheme that yields quasi-cyclic turbo codes. We prove that randomly chosen members of this family yield with probability almost 1 turbo codes with asymptotically optimum minimum distance, i.e. growing as a logarithm of the interleaver size. These interleavers are also very practical in terms of memory requirements and their decoding error probabilities for small block lengths compare favorably with previous interleaving schemes.
Cyclic codes are an interesting type of linear codes and have applications in communication and storage systems due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. They have been studied for decades and a lot of progress has been made. In this paper, three types of generalized cyclotomy of order two and three classes of cyclic codes of length $n_1n_2$ and dimension $(n_1n_2+1)/2$ are presented and analysed, where $n_1$ and $n_2$ are two distinct primes. Bounds on their minimum odd-like weight are also proved. The three constructions produce the best cyclic codes in certain cases.
A new bound on the minimum distance of q-ary cyclic codes is proposed. It is based on the description by another cyclic code with small minimum distance. The connection to the BCH bound and the Hartmann--Tzeng (HT) bound is formulated explicitly. We show that for many cases our approach improves the HT bound. Furthermore, we refine our bound for several families of cyclic codes. We define syndromes and formulate a Key Equation that allows an efficient decoding up to our bound with the Extended Euclidean Algorithm. It turns out that lowest-code-rate cyclic codes with small minimum distances are…
A general result on the explicit form of the general error locator polynomial for all cyclic codes is given, along with several results for infinite classes of cyclic codes with $t=2$ and $t=3$. From these, a theoretically justification of the sparsity of the general error locator polynomial is obtained for all cyclic codes with $t\leq 3$ and $n<63$, except for three cases where the sparsity is proved by a computer check. Moreover, we discuss some consequences of our results to the understanding of the complexity of bounded-distance decoding of cyclic codes.
Spread codes and cyclic orbit codes are special families of constant dimension subspace codes. These codes have been well-studied for their error correction capability, transmission rate and decoding methods, but the question of how to encode and retrieve messages has not been investigated. In this work we show how a message set of consecutive integers can be encoded and retrieved for these two code families.
Protograph-based Raptor-like low-density parity-check codes (PBRL codes) are a recently proposed family of easily encodable and decodable rate-compatible LDPC (RC-LDPC) codes. These codes have an excellent iterative decoding threshold and performance across all design rates. PBRL codes designed thus far, for both long and short block-lengths, have been based on optimizing the iterative decoding threshold of the protograph of the RC code family at various design rates. In this work, we propose a design method to obtain better quasi-cyclic (QC) RC-LDPC codes with PBRL structure for short block-l…
In this paper, we consider the Spatial Modulation (SM) system in a frequency selective channel under single carrier (SC) communication scenario and propose zero-padding instead of cyclic prefix considered in the existing literature. We show that the zero-padded single carrier (ZP-SC) SM system offers full multipath diversity under maximum-likelihood (ML) detection, unlike the cyclic prefixed SM system. Further, we show that the order of ML decoding complexity in the proposed ZP-SC SM system is independent of the frame length and depends only on the number of multipath links between the transmi…
We propose a framework for constructing efficient code-based encryption schemes from codes that do not hide any structure in their public matrix. The framework is in the spirit of the schemes first proposed by Alekhnovich in 2003 and based on the difficulty of decoding random linear codes from random errors of low weight. We depart somewhat from Aleknovich's approach and propose an encryption scheme based on the difficulty of decoding random quasi-cyclic codes. We propose two new cryptosystems instantiated within our framework: the Hamming Quasi-Cyclic cryptosystem (HQC), based on the Hamming …
Subspace codes and particularly constant dimension codes have attracted much attention in recent years due to their applications in random network coding. As a particular subclass of subspace codes, cyclic subspace codes have additional properties that can be applied efficiently in encoding and decoding algorithms. It is desirable to find cyclic constant dimension codes such that both the code sizes and the minimum distances are as large as possible. In this paper, we explore the ideas of constructing cyclic constant dimension codes proposed in \big([2], IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2016\big) and …

Cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms over finite fields, so that they have practical applications in communication systems, consumer electronics and data storage systems. The objective of this paper is to give eight new classes of optimal ternary cyclic codes with parameters $[3^m-1,3^m-1-2m,4]$, according to a result on the non-existence of solutions to a certain equation over $F_{3^m}$. It is worth noticing that some recent conclusions on such optimal ternary cyclic codes are some special cases of our work. More importantly, three of the nine open problems proposed by…
Permutation decoding gained recent interest as it can exploit the symmetries of a code in a parallel fashion. Moreover, it has been shown that by viewing permuted polar codes as polar subcodes, the set of usable permutations in permutation decoding can be increased. We extend this idea to pre-transformed polar codes, such as cyclic redundancy check (CRC)-aided polar codes, which previously could not be decoded using permutations due to their lack of automorphisms. Using belief propagation (BP)-based subdecoders, we showcase a performance close to CRC-aided SCL (CA-SCL) decoding. The proposed a…
This paper considers a linear quasi-cyclic product code of two given quasi-cyclic codes of relatively prime lengths over finite fields. We give the spectral analysis of a quasi-cyclic product code in terms of the spectral analysis of the row- and the column-code. Moreover, we provide a new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of a given quasi-cyclic code and present a new algebraic decoding algorithm.More specifically, we prove an explicit (unreduced) basis of an l\_a l\_b-quasi-cyclic product code in terms of the generator matrix in reduced Gr{ö}bner basis with respect to the position-…
Decoding of convolutional codes poses a significant challenge for coding theory. Classical methods, based on e.g. Viterbi decoding, suffer from being computationally expensive and are restricted therefore to codes of small complexity. Based on analogies with model predictive optimal control, we propose a new iterative method for convolutional decoding that is cheaper to implement than established algorithms, while still offering significant error correction capabilities. The algorithm is particularly well-suited for decoding special types of convolutional codes, such as e.g. cyclic convolution…
The 5th generation wireless systems (5G) standardization process of the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) chose polar codes as a channel coding scheme for the control channel. In case of downlink control information, polar codes are concatenated with distributed distributed cyclic redundancy check (CRC). Whereas CRC bits allow to improve the performance of successive cancellation list (SCL) decoders by improving distance properties, distributed CRC bits allow for path pruning and decoding early-termination. In this paper, we show how to take advantage of the distributed CRC to improve …
