As a subclass of linear codes, cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms, so they are widely used in many areas such as consumer electronics, data storage systems and communication systems. In this paper, we give a general construction of optimal p-ary cyclic codes which leads to three explicit constructions. In addition, another class of p-ary optimal cyclic codes are presented.
Cyclic codes have attracted a lot of research interest for decades as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, for an odd prime $p$, the weight distributions of two classes of $p$-ary cyclic codes are completely determined. We show that both codes have at most five nonzero weights.
Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have wide applications in data storage systems, communication systems and consumer electronics due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. Let $p\ge 5$ be an odd prime and $m$ be a positive integer. Let $\mathcal{C}_{(1,e,s)}$ denote the $p$-ary cyclic code with three nonzeros $α$, $α^e$, and $α^s$, where $α$ is a generator of ${\mathbb F}_{p^m}^*$, $s=\frac{p^m-1}{2}$, and $2\le e\le p^m-2$. In this paper, we present four classes of optimal $p$-ary cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}_{(1,e,s)}$ with parameters $[p^m-1,p^m-2m-2,4]$ by analyzin…
Let m, k be positive integers, p be an odd prime and $π$ be a primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_{p^m}$. In this paper, we determine the weight distribution of a family of cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}_t$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$, whose duals have two zeros $π^{-t}$ and $-π^{-t}$, where $t$ satisfies $t\equiv \frac{p^k+1}{2}p^τ\ ({\rm mod}\ \frac{p^m-1}{2}) $ for some $τ\in \{0,1,\cdots, m-1\}$.
Recently, linear codes with a few weights were widely investigated due to their applications in secret sharing schemes and authentication schemes. In this letter, we present a class of $q$-ary linear codes derived from irreducible cyclic codes with $q$ a prime power. We use Gauss sums to represent its Hamming weights and obtain the bounds of its minimum Hamming distance. In some cases, we explicitly determine its weight distributions which generalize some known results. It is quite interesting that many new codes obtained in this letter are optimal according to some bounds on linear codes.
For an odd prime $p$ and two positive integers $n\geq 3$ and $k$ with $\frac{n}{{\rm gcd}(n,k)}$ being odd, the paper determines the weight distribution of a $p$-ary cyclic code $\mathcal{C}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ with nonzeros $α^{-1}$, $α^{-(p^k+1)}$ and $α^{-(p^{3k}+1)}$, where $α$ is a primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$
A code is said to be a $r$-local locally repairable code (LRC) if each of its coordinates can be repaired by accessing at most $r$ other coordinates. When some of the $r$ coordinates are also erased, the $r$-local LRC can not accomplish the local repair, which leads to the concept of $(r,δ)$-locality. A $q$-ary $[n, k]$ linear code $\cC$ is said to have $(r, δ)$-locality ($δ\ge 2$) if for each coordinate $i$, there exists a punctured subcode of $\cC$ with support containing $i$, whose length is at most $r + δ- 1$, and whose minimum distance is at least $δ$. The $(r, δ)$-LRC can tolerate $δ-1$ …
Let $m$, $k$ be positive integers such that $\frac{m}{\gcd(m,k)}\geq 3$, $p$ be an odd prime and $π$ be a primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_{p^m}$. Let $h_1(x)$ and $h_2(x)$ be the minimal polynomials of $-π^{-1}$ and $π^{-\frac{p^k+1}{2}}$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$, respectively. In the case of odd $\frac{m}{\gcd(m,k)}$, when $k$ is even, $\gcd(m,k)$ is odd or when $\frac{k}{\gcd(m,k)}$ is odd, Zhou et~al. in \cite{zhou} obtained the weight distribution of a class of cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ with parity-check polynomial $h_1(x)h_2(x)$. In this paper, we further investigate this…
Upper and lower bounds on the largest number of weights in a cyclic code of given length, dimension and alphabet are given. An application to irreducible cyclic codes is considered. Sharper upper bounds are given for the special cyclic codes (called here strongly cyclic), {whose nonzero codewords have period equal to the length of the code}. Asymptotics are derived on the function $Γ(k,q),$ {that is defined as} the largest number of nonzero weights a cyclic code of dimension $k$ over $\F_q$ can have, and an algorithm to compute it is sketched. The nonzero weights in some infinite families of R…
With entanglement-assisted (EA) formalism, arbitrary classical linear codes are allowed to transform into EAQECCs by using pre-shared entanglement between the sender and the receiver. In this paper, based on classical cyclic MDS codes by exploiting pre-shared maximally entangled states, we construct two families of $q$-ary entanglement-assisted quantum MDS codes $[[\frac{q^{2}+1}{a},\frac{q^{2}+1}{a}-2(d-1)+c,d;c]]$, where q is a prime power in the form of $am+l$, and $a=(l^2+1)$ or $a=\frac{(l^2+1)}{5}$. We show that all of $q$-ary EAQMDS have minimum distance upper limit much larger than the…
Locally repairable codes (LRCs) have emerged as an important coding scheme in distributed storage systems (DSSs) with relatively low repair cost by accessing fewer non-failure nodes. Theoretical bounds and optimal constructions of LRCs have been widely investigated. Optimal LRCs via cyclic and constacyclic codes provide significant benefit of elegant algebraic structure and efficient encoding procedure. In this paper, we continue to consider the constructions of optimal LRCs via cyclic and constacyclic codes with long code length. Specifically, we first obtain two classes of $q$-ary cyclic Sin…
Like classical block codes, a locally repairable code also obeys the Singleton-type bound (we call a locally repairable code {\it optimal} if it achieves the Singleton-type bound). In the breakthrough work of \cite{TB14}, several classes of optimal locally repairable codes were constructed via subcodes of Reed-Solomon codes. Thus, the lengths of the codes given in \cite{TB14} are upper bounded by the code alphabet size $q$. Recently, it was proved through extension of construction in \cite{TB14} that length of $q$-ary optimal locally repairable codes can be $q+1$ in \cite{JMX17}. Surprisingly,…
A new approach to bound the minimum distance of $q$-ary cyclic codes is presented. The connection to the BCH and the Hartmann--Tzeng bound is formulated and it is shown that for several cases an improvement is achieved. We associate a second cyclic code to the original one and bound its minimum distance in terms of parameters of the associated code.
Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have wide applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems, and communication systems due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. Cyclic codes with many zeros and their dual codes have been a subject of study for many years. However, their weight distributions are known only for a very small number of cases. In general the calculation of the weight distribution of cyclic codes is heavily based on the evaluation of some exponential sums over finite fields. Very recently, Li, Hu, Feng and Ge studied a class of $p$-ary cyclic …
Cyclic codes have attracted a lot of research interest for decades. In this paper, for an odd prime $p$, we propose a general strategy to compute the complete weight enumerator of cyclic codes via the value distribution of the corresponding exponential sums. As applications of this general strategy, we determine the complete weight enumerator of several $p$-ary cyclic codes and give some examples to illustrate our results.
Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems, and communication systems as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, a family of $p$-ary cyclic codes whose duals have three zeros are proposed. The weight distribution of this family of cyclic codes is determined. It turns out that the proposed cyclic codes have five nonzero weights.
Two generalizations of the Hartmann--Tzeng (HT) bound on the minimum distance of q-ary cyclic codes are proposed. The first one is proven by embedding the given cyclic code into a cyclic product code. Furthermore, we show that unique decoding up to this bound is always possible and outline a quadratic-time syndrome-based error decoding algorithm. The second bound is stronger and the proof is more involved. Our technique of embedding the code into a cyclic product code can be applied to other bounds, too and therefore generalizes them.
Locally repairable codes with locality $r$ ($r$-LRCs for short) were introduced by Gopalan et al. \cite{1} to recover a failed node of the code from at most other $r$ available nodes. And then $(r,δ)$ locally repairable codes ($(r,δ)$-LRCs for short) were produced by Prakash et al. \cite{2} for tolerating multiple failed nodes. An $r$-LRC can be viewed as an $(r,2)$-LRC. An $(r,δ)$-LRC is called optimal if it achieves the Singleton-type bound. It has been a great challenge to construct $q$-ary optimal $(r,δ)$-LRCs with length much larger than $q$. Surprisingly, Luo et al. \cite{3} presented a …
In this paper, we define and discuss ϕ-cyclic code, which may be regarded as a general form of the ordinary cyclic code. As applications, we explain how to extend two public key encryption schemes, one is McEliece and Niederriter's cryptosystem of which is based on error-correcting code theory. Another one is NTRU public key cryptosystem of which is based on polynomial ring theory. The main purpose of this paper is to give a more general construction of NTRU based on ideal matrices and q-ary lattice theory.
A new bound on the minimum distance of q-ary cyclic codes is proposed. It is based on the description by another cyclic code with small minimum distance. The connection to the BCH bound and the Hartmann--Tzeng (HT) bound is formulated explicitly. We show that for many cases our approach improves the HT bound. Furthermore, we refine our bound for several families of cyclic codes. We define syndromes and formulate a Key Equation that allows an efficient decoding up to our bound with the Extended Euclidean Algorithm. It turns out that lowest-code-rate cyclic codes with small minimum distances are…
A new lower bound on the minimum distance of q-ary cyclic codes is proposed. This bound improves upon the Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) bound and, for some codes, upon the Hartmann-Tzeng (HT) bound. Several Boston bounds are special cases of our bound. For some classes of codes the bound on the minimum distance is refined. Furthermore, a quadratic-time decoding algorithm up to this new bound is developed. The determination of the error locations is based on the Euclidean Algorithm and a modified Chien search. The error evaluation is done by solving a generalization of Forney's formula.
In this paper, we investigate cyclic codes over the ring $ \mathbb{F}_p[u,v,w]\langle u^2,$ $v^2, w^2$, $uv-vu, vw-wv, uw-wu \rangle$, where $p$ is a prime number. Which is a part of family of Frobenius rings. We find a unique set of generators for these codes and characterize the free cyclic codes. We also study the rank and the Hamming distance of these codes. We also constructs some good $p-ary$ codes as the Gray images of these cyclic codes.
Let $p$ be a prime number. In this paper, we study cyclic codes over the ring $ \Z_p[u, v]/\langle u^2, v^2, uv-vu\rangle$. We find a unique set of generators for these codes. We also study the rank and the Hamming distance of these codes. We obtain all except one ternary optimal code of length 12 as the Gray image of the cyclic codes over the ring $ \Z_p[u, v]/\langle u^2, v^2, uv-vu\rangle$. We also characterize the $p$-ary image of these cyclic codes under the Gray map.
It is well-known that cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In recent years, antiprimitive BCH codes have attracted a lot of attention. The objective of this paper is to study BCH codes of this type over finite fields and analyse their parameters. Some lower bounds on the minimum distance of antiprimitive BCH codes are given. The BCH codes presented in this paper have good parameters in general, containing many optimal linear codes. In particular, two open problems about the minimum distance of BCH codes of this type are partially solved in this paper.
Locally recoverable (LRC) codes and their variants have been extensively studied in recent years. In this paper we focus on cyclic constructions of LRC codes and derive conditions on the zeros of the code that support the property of hierarchical locality. As a result, we obtain a general family of hierarchical LRC codes for a new range of code parameters. We also observe that our approach enables one to represent an LRC code in quasicyclic form, and use this representation to construct tail-biting convolutional LRC codes with locality. Among other results, we extend the general approach to cy…
Let $R=\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}+u\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}+\cdots+u^{k}\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}$ , where $\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}$ is a finite field with $2^{m}$ elements, $m$ is a positive integer, $u$ is an indeterminate with $u^{k+1}=0.$ In this paper, we propose the constructions of two new families of quantum codes obtained from dual-containing cyclic codes of odd length over $R$. A new Gray map over $R$ is defined and a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of dual-containing cyclic codes over $R$ is given. A new family of $2^{m}$-ary quantum codes is obtained via the Gray map and the Calderbank-…
In this paper we describe a class of codes called {\it permutation codes}. This class of codes is a generalization of cyclic codes and quasi-cyclic codes. We also give some examples of optimal permutation codes over binary, ternary, and $5$-ary. Then, we describe its structure as submodules over a polynomial ring.
In this correspondence, for every periodic $p-$ary sequence satisfying ideal two-level autocorrelation property the existence of an element of the field ${\bf GF}(p)$ which appears one time less than all the rest that are equally distributed in a period of that sequence, is proved by algebraic method. In addition, it is shown that such a special element might not be only the zero element but as well arbitrary element of that field.
In this note, the following basic question is explored: in a cyclic group, how are the Shannon entropies of the sum and difference of i.i.d. random variables related to each other? For the integer group, we show that they can differ by any real number additively, but not too much multiplicatively; on the other hand, for $\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$, the entropy of the difference is always at least as large as that of the sum. These results are closely related to the study of more-sum-than-difference (i.e. MSTD) sets in additive combinatorics. We also investigate polar codes for $q$-ary input chann…
Berlekamp and Zigangirov completely determined the capacity error function for binary error correcting codes with noiseless feedback. It is still an unsolved problem if the upper bound for the capacity error function in the non-binary case of Ahlswede, Lebedev, and Deppe is sharp. We consider wraparound channels with limited magnitude and noiseless feedback. We completely determine the capacity error function for all $q$-ary wraparound channels with a magnitude of level $r$. All of our algorithms use partial noiseless feedback. Furthermore, a special case of the problem is equivalent to Shanno…
Lattices have been used in several problems in coding theory and cryptography. In this paper we approach $q$-ary lattices obtained via Constructions D, $\D'$ and $\overline{D}$. It is shown connections between Constructions D and $\D'$. Bounds for the minimum $l_1$-distance of lattices $Λ_{D}$, $Λ_{D'}$ and $Λ_{\overline{D}}$ and, under certain conditions, a generator matrix for $Λ_{D'}$ are presented. In addition, when the chain of codes used is closed under the zero-one addition, we derive explicit expressions for the minimum $l_1$-distances of the lattices $Λ_{D}$ and $Λ_{\overline{D}}$ att…
In this paper we study the relationship between vectorial (Boolean) functions and cyclic codes in the context of algebraic attacks. We first derive a direct link between the annihilators of a vectorial function (in univariate form) and certain $2^{n}$-ary cyclic codes (which we prove that they are LCD codes) extending results due to Rønjom and Helleseth. The knowledge of the minimum distance of those codes gives rise to a lower bound on the algebraic immunity of the associated vectorial function. Furthermore, we solve an open question raised by Mesnager and Cohen. We also present some properti…

We consider locally repairable codes over small fields and propose constructions of optimal cyclic and linear codes in terms of the dimension for a given distance and length. Four new constructions of optimal linear codes over small fields with locality properties are developed. The first two approaches give binary cyclic codes with locality two. While the first construction has availability one, the second binary code is characterized by multiple available repair sets based on a binary Simplex code. The third approach extends the first one to q-ary cyclic codes including (binary) extension fi…
The objects of study of this paper are communication channels in which the dominant type of noise are symbol shifts, the main motivating examples being timing and bit-shift channels. Two channel models are introduced and their zero-error capacities and zero-error-detection capacities determined by explicit constructions of optimal codes. Model A can be informally described as follows: 1) The information is stored in an $ n $-cell register, where each cell is either empty or contains a particle of one of $ P $ possible types, and 2) due to the imperfections of the device each of the particles m…
In this paper, a family of cyclic codes over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ whose duals have five zeros is presented, where $p$ is an odd prime. Furthermore, the weight distributions of these cyclic codes are determined.
We extend earlier work on the design of convolutional code-specific CRC codes to $Q$-ary alphabets, with an eye toward $Q$-ary orthogonal signaling. Starting with distance-spectrum optimal, zero-terminated, $Q$-ary convolutional codes, we design $Q$-ary CRC codes so that the CRC/convolutional concatenation is distance-spectrum optimal. The $Q$-ary code symbols are mapped to a $Q$-ary orthogonal signal set and sent over an AWGN channel with noncoherent reception. We focus on $Q = 4$, rate-1/2 convolutional codes in our designs. The random coding union bound and normal approximation are used in …
Cyclic codes have been widely used in digital communication systems and consume electronics as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. The weight distribution of cyclic codes has been an important topic of study for many years. It is in general hard to determine the weight distribution of linear codes. In this paper, a class of cyclic codes with any number of zeros are described and their weight distributions are determined.
In this paper we extend the works \cite{gegeng2,XLZD} further in two directions and compute the weight distribution of these cyclic codes under more relaxed conditions. It is interesting to note that many cyclic codes in the family are optimal and have only a few non-zero weights. Besides using similar ideas from \cite{gegeng2,XLZD}, we carry out some subtle manipulation of certain exponential sums.
The encoding complexity of a general (en,ek) quasi-cyclic code is O[(e^2)(n-k)k]. This paper presents a novel low-complexity encoding algorithm for quasi-cyclic (QC) codes based on matrix transformation. First, a message vector is encoded into a transformed codeword in the transform domain. Then, the transmitted codeword is obtained from the transformed codeword by the inverse Galois Fourier transform. For binary QC codes, a simple and fast mapping is required to post-process the transformed codeword such that the transmitted codeword is binary as well. The complexity of our proposed encoding …
Cyclic codes are an important class of linear codes, whose weight distribution have been extensively studied. Most previous results obtained so far were for cyclic codes with no more than three zeroes. Inspired by the works \cite{Li-Zeng-Hu} and \cite{gegeng2}, we study two families of cyclic codes over $\mathbb{F}_p$ with arbitrary number of zeroes of generalized Niho type, more precisely $\ca$ (for $p=2$) of $t+1$ zeroes, and $\cb$ (for any prime $p$) of $t$ zeroes for any $t$. We find that the first family has at most $(2t+1)$ non-zero weights, and the second has at most $2t$ non-zero weigh…
For $q=p^m$ with $p$ prime and $k\mid q-1$, we consider the generalized Paley graph $Γ(k,q) = Cay(\mathbb{F}_q, R_k)$, with $R_k=\{ x^k : x \in \mathbb{F}_q^* \}$, and the irreducible $p$-ary cyclic code $\mathcal{C}(k,q) = \{(\textrm{Tr}_{q/p}(γω^{ik})_{i=0}^{n-1})\}_{γ\in \mathbb{F}_q}$, with $ω$ a primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $n=\tfrac{q-1}{k}$. We first express the spectra of $Γ(k,q)$ in terms of Gaussian periods. Then, we show that the spectra of $Γ(k,q)$ and $\mathcal{C}(k,q)$ are mutually determined by each other if further $k\mid \tfrac{q-1}{p-1}$. We give $Spec(Γ(k,q))$ exp…
An $(r, δ)$-locally repairable code ($(r, δ)$-LRC for short) was introduced by Prakash et al. \cite{Prakash2012} for tolerating multiple failed nodes in distributed storage systems, which was a generalization of the concept of $r$-LRCs produced by Gopalan et al. \cite{Gopalan2012}. An $(r, δ)$-LRC is said to be optimal if it achieves the Singleton-like bound. Recently, Chen et al. \cite{Chen2018} generalized the construction of cyclic $r$-LRCs proposed by Tamo et al. \cite{Tamo2015,Tamo2016} and constructed several classes of optimal $(r, δ)$-LRCs of length $n$ for $n\, |\, (q-1)$ or $n\,|\, (…
Cyclic codes with two zeros and their dual codes as a practically and theoretically interesting class of linear codes, have been studied for many years. However, the weight distributions of cyclic codes are difficult to determine. From elliptic curves, this paper determines the weight distributions of dual codes of cyclic codes with two zeros for a few more cases.
Linear codes and $t$-designs are interactive with each other. It is well known that some $t$-designs have been constructed by using certain linear codes in recent years. However, only a small number of infinite families of the extended codes of linear codes holding an infinite family of $t$-designs with $t\geq 3$ are reported in the literature. In this paper, we study the extended codes of the augmented codes of a class of binary cyclic codes with three zeros and their dual codes, and show that those codes hold $3$-designs. Furthermore, we obtain some shortened codes from the studied cyclic co…
Cyclic codes are an important class of linear codes, whose weight distribution have been extensively studied. So far, most of previous results obtained were for cyclic codes with no more than three zeros. Recently, \cite{Y-X-D12} constructed a class of cyclic codes with arbitrary number of zeros, and computed the weight distributions for several cases. In this paper, we determine the weight distribution for a new family of such codes. This is achieved by certain new methods, such as the theory of Jacobi sums over finite fields and subtle treatment of some complicated combinatorial identities.
In this paper, a family of reducible cyclic codes over GF(p) whose duals have four zeros is presented, where p is an odd prime. Furthermore, the weight distribution of these cyclic codes is determined.
Linear complementary dual (LCD) cyclic codes were referred historically to as reversible cyclic codes, which had applications in data storage. Due to a newly discovered application in cryptography, there has been renewed interest in LCD codes. In particular, it has been shown that binary LCD codes play an important role in implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. In this paper, we first present a new characterization of binary LCD codes in terms of their symplectic basis. Using such a characterization,we solve a conjecture proposed by Galvez et al. on the minim…
The paper has a threefold purpose. The first purpose is to present an explicit description of expanded cyclic codes defined in $\GF(q^m)$. The proposed explicit construction of expanded generator matrix and expanded parity check matrix maintains the symbol-wise algebraic structure and thus keeps many important original characteristics. The second purpose of this paper is to identify a class of constant-weight cyclic codes. Specifically, we show that a well-known class of $q$-ary BCH codes excluding the all-zero codeword are constant-weight cyclic codes. Moreover, we show this class of codes ac…
