For an odd prime $p$ and two positive integers $n\geq 3$ and $k$ with $\frac{n}{{\rm gcd}(n,k)}$ being odd, the paper determines the weight distribution of a $p$-ary cyclic code $\mathcal{C}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ with nonzeros $α^{-1}$, $α^{-(p^k+1)}$ and $α^{-(p^{3k}+1)}$, where $α$ is a primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$
As a subclass of linear codes, cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms, so they are widely used in many areas such as consumer electronics, data storage systems and communication systems. In this paper, we give a general construction of optimal p-ary cyclic codes which leads to three explicit constructions. In addition, another class of p-ary optimal cyclic codes are presented.
Cyclic codes have attracted a lot of research interest for decades as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, for an odd prime $p$, the weight distributions of two classes of $p$-ary cyclic codes are completely determined. We show that both codes have at most five nonzero weights.
Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have wide applications in data storage systems, communication systems and consumer electronics due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. Let $p\ge 5$ be an odd prime and $m$ be a positive integer. Let $\mathcal{C}_{(1,e,s)}$ denote the $p$-ary cyclic code with three nonzeros $α$, $α^e$, and $α^s$, where $α$ is a generator of ${\mathbb F}_{p^m}^*$, $s=\frac{p^m-1}{2}$, and $2\le e\le p^m-2$. In this paper, we present four classes of optimal $p$-ary cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}_{(1,e,s)}$ with parameters $[p^m-1,p^m-2m-2,4]$ by analyzin…
Recently, linear codes with a few weights were widely investigated due to their applications in secret sharing schemes and authentication schemes. In this letter, we present a class of $q$-ary linear codes derived from irreducible cyclic codes with $q$ a prime power. We use Gauss sums to represent its Hamming weights and obtain the bounds of its minimum Hamming distance. In some cases, we explicitly determine its weight distributions which generalize some known results. It is quite interesting that many new codes obtained in this letter are optimal according to some bounds on linear codes.
A code is said to be a $r$-local locally repairable code (LRC) if each of its coordinates can be repaired by accessing at most $r$ other coordinates. When some of the $r$ coordinates are also erased, the $r$-local LRC can not accomplish the local repair, which leads to the concept of $(r,δ)$-locality. A $q$-ary $[n, k]$ linear code $\cC$ is said to have $(r, δ)$-locality ($δ\ge 2$) if for each coordinate $i$, there exists a punctured subcode of $\cC$ with support containing $i$, whose length is at most $r + δ- 1$, and whose minimum distance is at least $δ$. The $(r, δ)$-LRC can tolerate $δ-1$ …
Upper and lower bounds on the largest number of weights in a cyclic code of given length, dimension and alphabet are given. An application to irreducible cyclic codes is considered. Sharper upper bounds are given for the special cyclic codes (called here strongly cyclic), {whose nonzero codewords have period equal to the length of the code}. Asymptotics are derived on the function $Γ(k,q),$ {that is defined as} the largest number of nonzero weights a cyclic code of dimension $k$ over $\F_q$ can have, and an algorithm to compute it is sketched. The nonzero weights in some infinite families of R…
With entanglement-assisted (EA) formalism, arbitrary classical linear codes are allowed to transform into EAQECCs by using pre-shared entanglement between the sender and the receiver. In this paper, based on classical cyclic MDS codes by exploiting pre-shared maximally entangled states, we construct two families of $q$-ary entanglement-assisted quantum MDS codes $[[\frac{q^{2}+1}{a},\frac{q^{2}+1}{a}-2(d-1)+c,d;c]]$, where q is a prime power in the form of $am+l$, and $a=(l^2+1)$ or $a=\frac{(l^2+1)}{5}$. We show that all of $q$-ary EAQMDS have minimum distance upper limit much larger than the…
Locally repairable codes (LRCs) have emerged as an important coding scheme in distributed storage systems (DSSs) with relatively low repair cost by accessing fewer non-failure nodes. Theoretical bounds and optimal constructions of LRCs have been widely investigated. Optimal LRCs via cyclic and constacyclic codes provide significant benefit of elegant algebraic structure and efficient encoding procedure. In this paper, we continue to consider the constructions of optimal LRCs via cyclic and constacyclic codes with long code length. Specifically, we first obtain two classes of $q$-ary cyclic Sin…
Like classical block codes, a locally repairable code also obeys the Singleton-type bound (we call a locally repairable code {\it optimal} if it achieves the Singleton-type bound). In the breakthrough work of \cite{TB14}, several classes of optimal locally repairable codes were constructed via subcodes of Reed-Solomon codes. Thus, the lengths of the codes given in \cite{TB14} are upper bounded by the code alphabet size $q$. Recently, it was proved through extension of construction in \cite{TB14} that length of $q$-ary optimal locally repairable codes can be $q+1$ in \cite{JMX17}. Surprisingly,…
The weight distribution and weight hierarchy of linear codes are two important research topics in coding theory. In this paper, by choosing proper defining sets from inhomogeneous quadratic functions over $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{2},$ we construct a family of $3$-weight $p$-ary linear codes and determine their weight distributions and weight hierarchies. Most of the codes can be used in secret sharing schemes.
We present an encoding and decoding scheme for constant weight sequences, that is, given an information sequence, the construction results in a sequence of specific weight within a certain range. The scheme uses a prefix design that is based on Gray codes. Furthermore, by adding redundant symbols we extend the range of weight values for output sequences, which is useful for some applications.
Linear codes with a few weights are very important in coding theory and have attracted a lot of attention. In this paper, we present a construction of $q$-ary linear codes from trace and norm functions over finite fields. The weight distributions of the linear codes are determined in some cases based on Gauss sums. It is interesting that our construction can produce optimal or almost optimal codes. Furthermore, we show that our codes can be used to construct secret sharing schemes with interesting access structures and strongly regular graphs with new parameters.
Cyclic codes have attracted a lot of research interest for decades. In this paper, for an odd prime $p$, we propose a general strategy to compute the complete weight enumerator of cyclic codes via the value distribution of the corresponding exponential sums. As applications of this general strategy, we determine the complete weight enumerator of several $p$-ary cyclic codes and give some examples to illustrate our results.
Coset constructions of $q$-ary Reed-Muller codes can be used to store secrets on a distributed storage system in such a way that only parties with access to a large part of the system can obtain information while still allowing for local error-correction. In this paper we determine the relative generalized Hamming weights of these codes which can be translated into a detailed description of the information leakage [2, 24, 21, 11].
It was shown in \cite{GXY18} that the length $n$ of a $q$-ary linear locally recoverable code with distance $d\ge 5$ is upper bounded by $O(dq^3)$. Thus, it is a challenging problem to construct $q$-ary locally recoverable codes with distance $d\ge 5$ and length approaching the upper bound. The paper \cite{GXY18} also gave an algorithmic construction of $q$-ary locally recoverable codes with locality $r$ and length $n=Ω_r(q^2)$ for $d=5$ and $6$, where $Ω_r$ means that the implicit constant depends on locality $r$. In the present paper, we present an explicit construction of $q$-ary locally re…
The weight distribution of second order $q$-ary Reed-Muller codes have been determined by Sloane and Berlekamp (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, vol. IT-16, 1970) for $q=2$ and by McEliece (JPL Space Programs Summary, vol. 3, 1969) for general prime power $q$. Unfortunately, there were some mistakes in the computation of the latter one. This paper aims to provide a precise account for the weight distribution of second order $q$-ary Reed-Muller codes. In addition, the weight distributions of second order $q$-ary homogeneous Reed-Muller codes and second order $q$-ary projective Reed-Muller codes are …
Locally repairable codes with locality $r$ ($r$-LRCs for short) were introduced by Gopalan et al. \cite{1} to recover a failed node of the code from at most other $r$ available nodes. And then $(r,δ)$ locally repairable codes ($(r,δ)$-LRCs for short) were produced by Prakash et al. \cite{2} for tolerating multiple failed nodes. An $r$-LRC can be viewed as an $(r,2)$-LRC. An $(r,δ)$-LRC is called optimal if it achieves the Singleton-type bound. It has been a great challenge to construct $q$-ary optimal $(r,δ)$-LRCs with length much larger than $q$. Surprisingly, Luo et al. \cite{3} presented a …
In this paper, several classes of three-weight codes and two-weight codes for the homogeneous metric over the chain ring $R=\mathbb{F}_p+u\mathbb{F}_p+\cdots +u^{k-1}\mathbb{F}_{p},$ with $u^k=0,$ are constructed, which generalises \cite{SL}, the special case of $p=k=2.$ These codes are defined as trace codes. In some cases of their defining sets, they are abelian. Their homogeneous weight distributions are computed by using exponential sums. In particular, in the two-weight case, we give some conditions of optimality of their Gray images by using the Griesmer bound. Their dual homogeneous dis…

In this paper, we define and discuss ϕ-cyclic code, which may be regarded as a general form of the ordinary cyclic code. As applications, we explain how to extend two public key encryption schemes, one is McEliece and Niederriter's cryptosystem of which is based on error-correcting code theory. Another one is NTRU public key cryptosystem of which is based on polynomial ring theory. The main purpose of this paper is to give a more general construction of NTRU based on ideal matrices and q-ary lattice theory.
It is well-known that cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In recent years, antiprimitive BCH codes have attracted a lot of attention. The objective of this paper is to study BCH codes of this type over finite fields and analyse their parameters. Some lower bounds on the minimum distance of antiprimitive BCH codes are given. The BCH codes presented in this paper have good parameters in general, containing many optimal linear codes. In particular, two open problems about the minimum distance of BCH codes of this type are partially solved in this paper.
The paper deals with the perfect 1-error correcting codes over a finite field with $q$ elements (briefly $q$-ary 1-perfect codes). We show that the orthogonal code to the $q$-ary non-full-rank 1-perfect code of length $n = (q^{m}-1)/(q-1)$ is a $q$-ary constant-weight code with Hamming weight equals to $q^{m - 1}$ where $m$ is any natural number not less than two. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for $q$-ary 1-perfect codes of non-full rank. We suggest a generalization of the concatenation construction to the $q$-ary case and construct the ternary 1-perfect codes of length 13 and …
Linear codes with a few weights are an important class of codes in coding theory and have attracted a lot of attention. In this paper, we present several constructions of $q$-ary linear codes with two or three weights from vectorial dual-bent functions, where $q$ is a power of an odd prime $p$. The weight distributions of the constructed $q$-ary linear codes are completely determined. We illustrate that some known constructions in the literature can be obtained by our constructions. In some special cases, our constructed linear codes can meet the Griesmer bound. Furthermore, based on the const…
In this paper, we investigate cyclic codes over the ring $ \mathbb{F}_p[u,v,w]\langle u^2,$ $v^2, w^2$, $uv-vu, vw-wv, uw-wu \rangle$, where $p$ is a prime number. Which is a part of family of Frobenius rings. We find a unique set of generators for these codes and characterize the free cyclic codes. We also study the rank and the Hamming distance of these codes. We also constructs some good $p-ary$ codes as the Gray images of these cyclic codes.
In this paper we describe a class of codes called {\it permutation codes}. This class of codes is a generalization of cyclic codes and quasi-cyclic codes. We also give some examples of optimal permutation codes over binary, ternary, and $5$-ary. Then, we describe its structure as submodules over a polynomial ring.
Locally recoverable (LRC) codes and their variants have been extensively studied in recent years. In this paper we focus on cyclic constructions of LRC codes and derive conditions on the zeros of the code that support the property of hierarchical locality. As a result, we obtain a general family of hierarchical LRC codes for a new range of code parameters. We also observe that our approach enables one to represent an LRC code in quasicyclic form, and use this representation to construct tail-biting convolutional LRC codes with locality. Among other results, we extend the general approach to cy…
Let $R=\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}+u\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}+\cdots+u^{k}\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}$ , where $\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}$ is a finite field with $2^{m}$ elements, $m$ is a positive integer, $u$ is an indeterminate with $u^{k+1}=0.$ In this paper, we propose the constructions of two new families of quantum codes obtained from dual-containing cyclic codes of odd length over $R$. A new Gray map over $R$ is defined and a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of dual-containing cyclic codes over $R$ is given. A new family of $2^{m}$-ary quantum codes is obtained via the Gray map and the Calderbank-…
In this note, the following basic question is explored: in a cyclic group, how are the Shannon entropies of the sum and difference of i.i.d. random variables related to each other? For the integer group, we show that they can differ by any real number additively, but not too much multiplicatively; on the other hand, for $\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$, the entropy of the difference is always at least as large as that of the sum. These results are closely related to the study of more-sum-than-difference (i.e. MSTD) sets in additive combinatorics. We also investigate polar codes for $q$-ary input chann…
We consider locally repairable codes over small fields and propose constructions of optimal cyclic and linear codes in terms of the dimension for a given distance and length. Four new constructions of optimal linear codes over small fields with locality properties are developed. The first two approaches give binary cyclic codes with locality two. While the first construction has availability one, the second binary code is characterized by multiple available repair sets based on a binary Simplex code. The third approach extends the first one to q-ary cyclic codes including (binary) extension fi…
In this paper, a family of five-weight reducible cyclic codes is presented. Furthermore, the weight distribution of these cyclic codes is determined, which follows from the determination of value distributions of certain exponential sums.
