Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold. The set $\cha(X)$ of one-dimensional complex valued characters of the fundamental group of $X$ forms an algebraic group. Consider the subset of $\cha(X)$ consisting of those characters for which the corresponding local system has nontrivial cohomology in a given degree $d$. This set is shown to be a union of finitely many components that are translates of algebraic subgroups of $\cha(X)$. When the degree $d$ equals 1, it is shown that some of these components are pullbacks of the character varieties of curves under holomorphic maps. As a corollary, it is shown that the number of equivalence classes (under a natural equivalence relation) of holomorphic maps, with connected fibers, of $X$ onto smooth curves of a fixed genus $>1$ is a topological invariant of $X$. In fact it depends only on the fundamental group of $X$.
The Green-Lazarsfeld secant conjecture predicts that the syzygies of a curve of sufficiently high degree are controlled by its special secants. We prove this conjecture for all curves of Clifford index at least two and not bielliptic and for all line bundles of a certain degree. Our proof is based on a classic result of Martens and Mumford on Brill-Noether varieties and on a simple vanishing criterion that comes from the interpretation of syzygies through symmetric products of curves.
Previously, Ohsugi and Hibi gave a combinatorial description of bipartite graphs $G$ whose toric edge ideal $I_G$ is generated by quadrics, showing that every cycle of $G$ of length at least $6$ must have a chord. This corresponds to the Green-Lazarsfeld condition $\mathbf{N}_1$. In this paper, we investigate the higher syzygies of $I_G$ and give combinatorial descriptions of the Green-Lazarsfeld conditions $\mathbf{N}_p$ of toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs for all $p \ge 1$. In particular, we show that $I_G$ is linearly presented (i.e. satisfies condition $\mathbf{N}_2$) if and only if t…
The Hankel index of a real variety $X$ is an invariant that quantifies the difference between nonnegative quadrics and sums of squares on $X$. In [5], the authors proved an intriguing bound on the Hankel index in terms of the Green-Lazarsfeld index, which measures the "linearity" of the minimal free resolution of the ideal of $X$. In all previously known cases this bound was tight. We provide the first class of examples where the bound is not tight; in fact the difference between Hankel index and Green-Lazarsfeld index can be arbitrarily large. Our examples are outer projections of rational no…
Let $(X,H)$ be a polarized K3 surface with $\mathrm{Pic}(X) = \mathbb Z H$, and let $C\in |H|$ be a smooth curve of genus $g$. We give an upper bound on the dimension of global sections of a semistable vector bundle on $C$. This allows us to compute the higher rank Clifford indices of $C$ with high genus. In particular, when $g\geq r^2\geq 4$, the rank $r$ Clifford index of $C$ can be computed by the restriction of Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles on $X$ corresponding to line bundles on the curve $C$. This is a generalization of the result by Green and Lazarsfeld for curves on K3 surfaces to higher ra…
A key result for syzygies of curves is Voisin's proof of Green's conjecture for the canonical embedding of a general curve of any genus. Her primary tools were the Lazarsfeld Mukai bundle on a K3 surface and a representation of Koszul cohomology on the Hilbert scheme of points on the surface. In this note we construct representations of the Koszul complex on Grassmann varieties; Voisin's setup arises as the inverse image of one of the maps. Using a different map, we give a substantially shorter proof of Voisin's result for K3 surfaces of even sectional genus.
We use a sheaf-theoretic approach to obtain a blow-up formula for Dolbeault cohomology groups with values in the holomorphic vector bundle over a compact complex manifold. As applications, we present several positive (or negative) examples associated to the vanishing theorems of Girbau, Kawamata-Viehweg and Green-Lazarsfeld in a uniform manner and study the blow-up invariance of some classical holomorphic invariants.
We introduce a relativization of the secant sheaves used by Ein, Green and Lazarsfeld and apply this construction to the study of syzygies of canonical curves. As a first application, we give a simpler proof of Voisin's Theorem for general canonical curves. This completely determines the terms of the minimal free resolution of the coordinate ring of such curves. Secondly, in the case of curves of even genus, we enhance Voisin's Theorem by providing a structure theorem for the last syzygy space, resolving the Geometric Syzygy Conjecture in even genus.
