Previously, Ohsugi and Hibi gave a combinatorial description of bipartite graphs $G$ whose toric edge ideal $I_G$ is generated by quadrics, showing that every cycle of $G$ of length at least $6$ must have a chord. This corresponds to the Green-Lazarsfeld condition $\mathbf{N}_1$. In this paper, we investigate the higher syzygies of $I_G$ and give combinatorial descriptions of the Green-Lazarsfeld conditions $\mathbf{N}_p$ of toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs for all $p \ge 1$. In particular, we show that $I_G$ is linearly presented (i.e. satisfies condition $\mathbf{N}_2$) if and only if the bipartite complement of $G$ is a tree of diameter at most $3$. We also investigate the regularity of linearly presented toric edge ideals and give criteria for polyomino ideals to satisfy the Green-Lazarsfeld conditions.
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph. We give a lower bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the toric ideal $I_G$ associated to $G$ in terms of the sizes and number of induced complete bipartite graphs in $G$. When $G$ is a chordal bipartite graph, we find an upper bound for the regularity of $I_G$ in terms of the size of the bipartition of $G$. We also give a new proof for the graded Betti numbers of the toric ideal associated to the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,n}$.
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph and $I(G)$ the toric ideal associated to the graph $G$. In this article we calculate Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of the graph $G$ for which the toric ideal $I(G)$ is generated by a quadratic binomials and it satiesfies some conditions.
We study the family of graphs whose number of primitive cycles equals its cycle rank. It is shown that this family is precisely the family of ring graphs. Then we study the complete intersection property of toric ideals of bipartite graphs and oriented graphs. An interesting application is that complete intersection toric ideals of bipartite graphs correspond to ring graphs and that these ideals are minimally generated by Groebner bases. We prove that any graph can be oriented such that its toric ideal is a complete intersection with a universal Groebner basis determined by the cycles. It turn…
Let $A$ be a $K$-subalgebra of the polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_d]$ of dimension $d$, generated by finitely many monomials of degree $r$. Then the Gauss algebra $\GG(A)$ of $A$ is generated by monomials of degree $(r-1)d$ in $S$. We describe the generators and the structure of $\GG(A)$, when $A$ is a Borel fixed algebra, a squarefree Veronese algebra, generated in degree $2$, or the edge ring of a bipartite graph with at least one loop. For a bipartite graph $G$ with one loop, the embedding dimension of $\GG(A)$ is bounded by the complexity of the graph $G$.
Let $I_{G} \subset K[x_{1},...,x_{m}]$ be the toric ideal associated to a finite graph $G$. In this paper we study the binomial arithmetical rank and the $G$-homogeneous arithmetical rank of $I_G$ in 2 cases: $G$ is bipartite, $I_G$ is generated by quadratic binomials. In both cases we prove that the binomial arithmetical rank and the $G$-arithmetical rank coincide with the minimal number of generators of $I_G$.
This work concerns the study of properties of a group of Koszul algebras coming from the toric ideals of a chordal bipartite infinite family of graphs (alternately, these rings may be interpreted as coming from determinants of certain ladder-like structures). We determine a linear system of parameters for each ring and explicitly determine the Hilbert series for the resulting Artinian reduction. As corollaries, we obtain the multiplicity and regularity of the original rings. This work extends results easily derived from lattice theory for a subfamily coming from a two-sided ladder to a family …
It is known that toric ring of a simple polyomino is ring homomorphic to a edge ring of a weakly chordal bipartite graph. In this paper we identify the toric ring of nonsimple polyominoes which are of the form "rectangle minus rectangle".
A central question in liaison theory asks whether every Cohen-Macaulay, graded ideal of a standard graded K-algebra belongs to the same G-liaison class of a complete intersection. In this paper we answer this question positively for toric ideals defining edge subrings of bipartite graphs.
Let G be a finite simple graph. In this paper we will show that the binomial edge ideal of G, JG is toric if and only if each connected component of G is complete and in this case it is the sum of toric ideal associated to bipartite complete graphs.
Let X* be a subset of an affine space A^s, over a finite field K, which is parameterized by the edges of a clutter. Let X and Y be the images of X* under the maps x --> [x] and x --> [(x,1)] respectively, where [x] and [(x,1)] are points in the projective spaces P^{s-1} and P^s respectively. For certain clutters and for connected graphs, we were able to relate the algebraic invariants and properties of the vanishing ideals I(X) and I(Y). In a number of interesting cases, we compute its degree and regularity. For Hamiltonian bipartite graphs, we show the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture. We …
We characterize the graphs $G$ for which their toric ideals $I_G$ are complete intersections. In particular we prove that for a connected graph $G$ such that $I_G$ is complete intersection all of its blocks are bipartite except of at most two. We prove that toric ideals of graphs which are complete intersections are circuit ideals. The generators of the toric ideal correspond to even cycles of $G$ except of at most one generator, which corresponds to two edge disjoint odd cycles joint at a vertex or with a path. We prove that the blocks of the graph satisfy the odd cycle condition. Finally we …
We compute the reduced Gröbner basis of the toric ideal with respect to a suitable monomial order and we study the Hilbert series of the vertex cover algebra $A(G)$, where $G$ is an unmixed bipartite graph without isolated vertices.
The correspondence between unmixed bipartite graphs and sublattices of the oolean lattice is discussed. By using this correspondence, we show the existence of squarefree quadratic initial ideals of toric ideals arising from minimal vertex covers of unmixed bipartite graphs.
This article provides the basic algebraic background on infinitesimal deformations and presents the proof of the well-known fact that the non-trivial infinitesimal deformations of a $K$-algebra $R$ are parameterized by the elements of cotangent module $T^1(R)$ of $R$. In this article we focus on deformations of toric rings, and give an explicit description of $T^1(R)$ in the case that $R$ is a toric ring. In particular, we are interested in unobstructed deformations which preserve the toric structure. Such deformations we call separations. Toric rings which do not admit any separation are call…
We compute the graded Betti numbers for the toric ideal of a family of graphs constructed by adjoining a cycle to a complete bipartite graph. The key observation is that this family admits an initial ideal which has linear quotients. As a corollary, we compute the Hilbert series and $h$-vector for all the toric ideals of graphs in this family.
Let X be an algebraic toric set in a projective space over a finite field. We study the vanishing ideal, I(X), of X and show some useful degree bounds for a minimal set of generators of I(X). We give an explicit description of a set of generators of I(X), when X is the algebraic toric set associated to an even cycle or to a connected bipartite graph with pairwise disjoint even cycles. In this case, a fomula for the regularity of I(X) is given. We show an upper bound for this invariant, when X is associated to a (not necessarily connected) bipartite graph. The upper bound is sharp if the graph …
Each partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, ..., λ_n)$ determines a so-called Ferrers tableau or, equivalently, a Ferrers bipartite graph. Its edge ideal, dubbed Ferrers ideal, is a squarefree monomial ideal that is generated by quadrics. We show that such an ideal has a 2-linear minimal free resolution, i.e. it defines a small subscheme. In fact, we prove that this property characterizes Ferrers graphs among bipartite graphs. Furthermore, using a method of Bayer and Sturmfels, we provide an explicit description of the maps in its minimal free resolution: This is obtained by associating a suitable polyhedra…
Let $G$ be a simple graph on the vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ with $m$ edges. An algebraic object attached to $G$ is the ideal $P_{G}$ generated by diagonal 2-minors of an $n \times n$ matrix of variables. In this paper we prove that if $G$ is bipartite, then every initial ideal of $P_{G}$ is generated by squarefree monomials of degree at most $\left \lfloor{\frac{m+n+1}{2}} \right \rfloor$. Furthermore, we completely characterize all connected graphs $G$ for which $P_{G}$ is the toric ideal associated to a finite simple graph. Finally we compute in certain cases the universal Gr{ö}bner basis o…
The slack ideal of a polytope is a saturated determinantal ideal that gives rise to a new model for the realization space of the polytope. The simplest slack ideals are toric and have connections to projectively unique polytopes. We prove that if a projectively unique polytope has a toric slack ideal, then it is the toric ideal of the bipartite graph of vertex-facet non-incidences of the polytope. The slack ideal of a polytope is contained in this toric ideal if and only if the polytope is morally 2-level, a generalization of the 2-level property in polytopes. We show that polytopes that do no…
In this paper we show that polyomino ideal of a simple polyomino coincides with the toric ideal of a weakly chordal bipartite graph and hence it has a quadratic Gröbner basis with respect to a suitable monomial order.
Our purpose is to study the family of simple undirected graphs whose toric ideal is a complete intersection from both an algorithmic and a combinatorial point of view. We obtain a polynomial time algorithm that, given a graph $G$, checks whether its toric ideal $P_G$ is a complete intersection or not. Whenever $P_G$ is a complete intersection, the algorithm also returns a minimal set of generators of $P_G$. Moreover, we prove that if $G$ is a connected graph and $P_G$ is a complete intersection, then there exist two induced subgraphs $R$ and $C$ of $G$ such that the vertex set $V(G)$ of $G$ is…
Let G be a graph obtained by taking r>=2 paths and identifying all first vertices and identifying all the last vertices. We compute the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of the quotient S/I(X), where S is the polynomial ring on the edges of G and I(X) is the vanishing ideal of the projective toric subset parameterized by G. The case we consider is the first case where the regularity was unknown, following earlier computations (by several authors) of the regularity when G is a tree, cycle, complete graph or complete bipartite graph, but specially in light of the reduction of the computation of th…
Given a monomial $m$ in a polynomial ring and a subset $L$ of the variables of the polynomial ring, the principal $L$-Borel ideal generated by $m$ is the ideal generated by all monomials which can be obtained from $m$ by successively replacing variables of $m$ by those which are in $L$ and have smaller index. Given a collection $\mathcal{I}=\{I_1,\ldots,I_r\}$ where $I_i$ is $L_i$-Borel for $i=1,\ldots,r$ (where the subsets $L_1,\ldots,L_r$ may be different for each ideal), we prove in essence that if the bipartite incidence graph among the subsets $L_1,\ldots,L_r$ is chordal bipartite, then t…
