This paper reproves a general form of the Green-Lazarsfeld 'generic vanishing' theorem and more recent strengthenings, as well as giving some new applications.
We use the toric degeneration of Bott-Samelson varieties and the description of cohomolgy of line bundles on toric varieties to deduce vanishings results for the cohomology of lines bundles on Bott-Samelson varieties.
By proving an integral formula of the curvature tensor of $E\ts \det E$, we observe that the curvature tensor of $E\ts \det E$ is very similar to that of a line bundle and obtain certain new Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano type vanishing theorems for vector bundles. As special cases, we deduce vanishing theorems for ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles by analytic method instead of the Leray-Borel-Le Potier spectral sequence.
This is a sequel to "Kodaira-Saito vanishing via Higgs bundles in positive characteristic" (arXiv:1611.09880). However, unlike the previous paper, all the arguments here are in characteristic zero. The main result is a Kodaira vanishing theorem for semistable parabolic Higgs bundles with trivial parabolic Chern classes. This implies a general semipositivity theorem. This also implies a Kodaira-Saito vanishing theorem for complex variations of Hodge structure.
In this paper, we provide an $L^2$ fine resolution of the prolongation of a nilpotent harmonic bundle in the sense of Simpson-Mochizuki (an analytic analogue of the Kashiwara-Malgrange filtrations). This is the logarithmic analogue of Cattani-Kaplan-Schmid's and Kashiwara-Kawai's results on the $L^2$ interpretation of the intersection complex. As an application, we give an $L^2$-theoretic proof to the Nadel-Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem with coefficients in a nilpotent Higgs bundle.
Let $L$ be a line bundle on a K3 or Enriques surface. We give a vanishing theorem for $H^1(L)$ that, unlike most vanishing theorems, gives necessary and sufficient geometrical conditions for the vanishing. This result is essential in our study of Brill-Noether theory of curves on Enriques surfaces (reference [KL1]) and of Enriques-Fano threefolds (reference [KLM]).
We give an algebraic proof valid in arbitrary characteristic for the known equivalence between (strongly) slope semistable vector bundles with vanishing discriminant and vanishing determinant and numerically flat bundles. We also address a related question of Misra.
The goal of this paper is to give a new proof of a special case of the Kodaira-Saito vanishing theorem for a variation of Hodge structure on the complement of a divisor with normal crossings. The proof does not use the theory of mixed Hodge modules, but instead reduces it to a more general vanishing theorem for semistable nilpotent Higgs bundles, which is then proved by using some facts about Higgs bundles in positive characteristic.
We study the $(k,s)$-positivity for holomorphic vector bundles on compact complex manifolds. $(0,s)$-positivity is exactly the Demailly $s$-positivity and a $(k,1)$-positive line bundle is just a $k$-positive line bundle in the sense of Sommese. In this way we get a unified theory for all kinds of positivities used for semipositive vector bundles. Several new vanishing theorems for $(k,s)$-positive vector bundles are proved and the vanishing theorems for $k$-ample vector bundles on projective algebraic manifolds are generalized to $k$-positive vector bundles on compact Kähler manifolds.
The paper investigates vanishing conditions on the first cohomology module of a normalized rank 2 vector bundle E on P^3 which force E to split, and finds therefore strategic levels of non-vanishing for a non-split bundle. The present conditions improve other conditions known in the literature and are obtained with simple computations on the Euler characteristic function, avoiding the speciality lemma, Barth's restriction theorem, the discriminat property, and other heavy tools.
We study cohomology support loci and higher direct images of (log) pluricanonical bundles of smooth projective varieties or log canonical pairs. We prove that the 0-th cohomology support loci of log pluricanonical bundles are finite unions of torsion translates of subtori. We also construct an example of morphism from a smooth projective variety to an abelian variety such that a higher direct image of a pluricanonical bundle to the abelian variety is not a GV-sheaf.
Let X be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension 4 and let L be an ample line bundle on X. In this paper, we study a natural number m such that h^{0}(m(K_{X}+L))>0 for any polarized 4-folds (X,L) with κ(K_{X}+L)\geq 0.
We show that techniques inspired by Kollár and Viehweg's study of weak positivity, combined with vanishing theorems for log-canonical pairs, lead to new consequences regarding generation and vanishing properties for direct images of pluricanonical bundles. We formulate the strongest such results as Fujita conjecture-type statements, which are then shown to govern a range of fundamental properties of direct images of pluricanonical and pluriadjoint line bundles, like effective vanishing theorems, weak positivity, or generic vanishing.
In this article we prove a general result on a nef vector bundle $E$ on a projective manifold $X$ of dimension $n$ depending on the vector space $H^{n,n} (X, E). $ It is also shown that $H^{n,n} (X, E)=0$ for an indecomposable nef rank 2 vector bundles $E$ on some specific type of $n$ dimensional projective manifold $X.$ The same vanishing shown to hold for indecomposable nef and big rank 2 vector bundles on any variety with trivial canonical bundle.
Let E be an ample vector bundle of rank r on a complex projective manifold X such that there exists a section $s \in Γ(\cal E)$ whose zero locus Z = (s = 0) is a smooth submanifold of the expected dimension dim X - r: = n -r. Assume that Z is not minimal; we investigate the hypothesis under which the extremal contractions of Z can be lifted to X. Finally we study in detail the cases in which Z is a scroll, a quadric bundle or a del Pezzo fibration.
We prove several asymptotic vanishing theorems for Frobenius twists of ample vector bundles in positive characteristic. As an application, we prove a generalization of the Bott-Danilov-Steenbrink vanishing theorem for ample vector bundles on toric varieties.
In this note, we study monodromies of algebraic connections on the trivial vector bundle. We prove that on a smooth complex affine curve, any monodromy arises as the underlying local system of an algebraic connection on the trivial bundle. We give a generalization of this for rank one monodromies in higher dimension.
We study line bundles on toric DM stacks $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$ of dimension two. We give a combinatorial criterion of when infinitely many line bundles on $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$ have trivial cohomology. We further discuss the structure of the set of such line bundles.
We characterize property $(N_p)$ on a polarized surface $(X,L)$ with trivial canonical bundle in terms of the (non)existence of certain forbidden subvarieties of $X$.
In this paper, we give a simple proof of a triviality criterion due to I.Biswas and J.Pedro and P.Dos Santos. We also prove a vector bundle on a homogenous space is trivial if and only if the restrictions of the vector bundle to Schubert lines are trivial. Using this result and Chern classes of vector bundles, we give a general criterion of a uniform vector bundle on a homogenous space to be splitting. As an application, we prove a uniform vector bundle on classical Grassmannians and quadrics of low rank is splitting.
We generalize a vanishing theorem for the cohomology of symmetric powers of the cotangent bundle of subvarieties of projective space due to Schneider. From this we deduce new vanishing results for Green-Griffiths jet differential bundles, generalizing results of Diverio and Pacienza-Rousseau.
We study the relationship between positivity of line bundles restricted to complete intersection subvarieties and the vanishing of higher cohomology groups. Based on this connection we prove generalizations of the vanishing theorems of Kawamata-Viehweg and Fujita that are valid for not necessarily big line bundles.
The primary goal of this paper is to systematically exploit the method of Deligne-Illusie to obtain Kodaira type vanishing theorems for vector bundles and more generally coherent sheaves on algebraic varieties. The key idea is to introduce a number which provides a cohomological measure of the positivity of a coherent sheaf called the Frobenius or F-amplitude. As the terminology indicates, the definition is most natural over a field of positive characteristic, however it can be forced into characteristic 0 by standard tricks. The F-amplitude enters into the statement of the basic vanishing the…
Let X be a smooth projective threefold, and let A be an ample line bundle such that $K_X+A$ is nef. We show that if $K_X$ or $-K_X$ is pseudoeffective, the adjoint bundle $K_X+A$ has global sections. We also give a very short proof of the Beltrametti-Sommese conjecture in dimension three, recently proven by Fukuma: if A is an ample line bundle such that $K_X+2A$ is nef, the adjoint bundle $K_X+2A$ has global sections.
We investigate the deformations of pairs $(X,L)$, where $L$ is a line bundle on a smooth projective variety $X$, defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic 0. In particular, we prove that the DG-Lie algebra controlling the deformations of the pair $(X,L)$ is homotopy abelian whenever $X$ has trivial canonical bundle, and so these deformations are unobstructed.
Let $Y$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\ge 2$ and let $M_{r,d}(Y)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on $Y$. A classical conjecture of Newstead and Ramanan states that $ c_i(M_{2,1}(Y))=0$ for $i>2(g-1)$ i.e. the top $2g-1$ Chern classes vanish. The purpose of this paper is to generalize this vanishing result to the rank 3 case by generalizing Gieseker's degeneration method. More precisely, we prove that $c_i(M_{3,1}(Y))=0$ for $i>6g-5$. In other words, the top $3g-3$ Chern classes vanish. Notice that we also have $c_i(M_{3,2}(Y))=0$ for $i>6g-5$.
Using $L^2$-methods, we prove a vanishing theorem for tame harmonic bundles over quasi-compact Kähler manifolds in a very general setting. As a special case, we give a completely new proof of the Kodaira type vanishing theorems for Higgs bundles due to Arapura. To prove our vanishing theorem, we construct a fine resolution of the Dolbeault complex for tame harmonic bundles via the complex of sheaves of $L^2$-forms, and we establish the Hörmander $L^2$-estimate and solve $(\bar{\partial}_E+θ)$-equations for Higgs bundles $(E,θ)$.
Let $M_X(r,ξ)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles, on a smooth complex projective curve $X$, of rank $r$ and fixed determinant $ξ$ such that $°(ξ)$ is coprime to $r$. If $E$ is a vector bundle $M_X(r,ξ)$ whose restriction to every Hecke curve in $M_X(r,ξ)$ is trivial, we prove that $E$ is trivial.
We extend the dimension and strong linearity results of generic vanishing theory to bundles of holomorphic forms and rank one local systems, and more generally to certain coherent sheaves of Hodge-theoretic origin associated to irregular varieties. Our main tools are Saito's mixed Hodge modules, the Fourier-Mukai transform for D-modules on abelian varieties introduced by Laumon and Rothstein, and Simpson's harmonic theory for flat bundles. In the process, we discover two natural categories of perverse coherent sheaves, one on the Picard variety, and the other on the moduli space of Higgs line …
We give a criterion for a flat fibration with affine plane fibers over a smooth scheme defined over a field of characteristic zero to be a Zariski locally trivial $\mathbb{A}^2$-bundle. An application is a positive answer to a version of the Dolgachev-Weisfeiler Conjecture for such fibrations: a flat fibration $\mathbb{A}^m$ $\rightarrow$ $\mathbb{A}^n$ with all fibers isomorphic to $\mathbb{A}^2$ is the trivial $\mathbb{A}^2$-bundle.
The paper investigates the non-vanishing of $H^1(E(n))$, where $E$ is a (normalized) rank two vector bundle over any smooth irreducible threefold $X$ of degree $d$ such that $Pic(X) \cong \ZZ$. If $ε$ is the integer defined by the equality $ω_X = O_X(ε)$, and $α$ is the least integer $t$ such that $H^0(E(t)) \ne 0$, then, for a non-stable $E$ ($α\le 0$) the first cohomology module does not vanish at least between the endpoints $\frac{ε-c_1}{2}$ and $-α-c_1-1$. The paper also shows that there are other non-vanishing intervals, whose endpoints depend on $α$ and also on the second Chern class $c_…
We study fourfolds with trivial canonical bundle which are zero loci of sections of homogeneous, completely reducible bundles over ordinary and classical complex Grassmannians. We prove that the only HyperK{ä}hler fourfolds among them are the example of Beauville and Donagi, and the example of Debarre and Voisin. In doing so, we give a complete classification of those varieties. We include also the analogous classification for surfaces and threefolds.
I prove a crystalline characterization of abelian varieties in characteristic $p>0$ amongst the class of varieties with trivial tangent bundle. I show using my characterization that a smooth, projective, ordinary variety with trivial tangent bundle is an abelian variety if and only if its second crystalline cohomology is torsion free. I also show that a conjecture of Ke-Zheng Li about characteristic $p>0$ varieties with trivial tangent bundles is true for surfaces. I give a new proof of a result of Li and prove a refinement of it. Based on my characterization of abelian varieties I propose mod…
We investigate singular Hermitian metrics on vector bundles, especially strictly Griffiths positive ones. $L^2$ esitimates and vanishing theorems usually require an assumption that vector bundles are Nakano positive. However there is no general definition of the Nakano positivity in singular settings. In this paper, we show various $L^2$ estimates and vanishing theromes by assuming that the vector bundle is strictly Griffiths positive and the base manifold is projective.
This article contains a new argument which proves vanishing of the first cohomology for negative vector bundles over a complex projective variety if the rank of the bundle is smaller than the dimension of the base. Similar argument is applied to the construction of holomorphic functions on the universal covering of the complex projective variety .
Junyan Cao has obtained a very general vanishing theorem, valid on any compact Kähler manifold, for the cohomology groups with values in a pseudoeffective line bundle twisted by the associated multiplier ideal sheaf. In this note, we give a version of this result in terms of the numerical dimension of the line bundle, instead of the numerical dimension of a given singular metric, which can be smaller.
We prove a general vanishing theorem for the cohomology of products of symmetric and skew-symmetric powers of an ample vector bundle on a smooth complex projective variety. Special cases include an extension of classical theorems of Griffiths and Le Potier to the whole Dolbeault cohomology, and an answer to a problem raised by Demailly. An application to degeneracy loci is given.
Four-folds with trivial canonical bundles are divided into six classes according to their holonomy group. We consider examples that are fibred by abelian surfaces over the projective plane. We construct such fibrations in five of the six classes, and prove that there is no such fibration in the sixth class. We classify all such fibrations whose generic fibre is the Jacobian of a genus two curve.
We prove that smooth, projective, $K$-trivial, weakly ordinary varieties over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$ are not geometrically uniruled. We also show a singular version of our theorem, which is sharp in multiple aspects. Our work, together with Langer's results, implies that varieties of the above type have strongly semistable tangent bundles with respect to any polarization.
We study bundles on projective spaces that have vanishing lower cohomologies using their short minimal free resolutions. We partition the moduli $\mathbf{M}$ according to the Hilbert function $H$ and classify all possible Hilbert functions $H$ of such bundles. For each $H$, we describe a stratification of $\mathbf{M}_H$ by quotients of rational varieties. We show that the closed strata form a graded lattice given by the Betti numbers.
We develop an intersection theory for a singular hemitian line bundle with positive curvature current on a smooth projective variety and irreducible curves on the variety. And we prove the existence of a natural rational fibration structure associated with the singular hermitian line bundle. Also for any pseudoeffective line bundle on a smooth projective variety, we prove the existence of a rational natural fibration structure associated with the line bundle. We also characterize a numerically trivial singular hermitain line bundle on a smooth projective variety.
Let M be the moduli space of semistable rank 2 Higgs pairs (V,ϕ) with trivial determinant over a smooth projective curve X of genus g>1. We compute the stringy E-function of M and prove that there does not exist a symplectic desingularization of M for g>2.
We prove the classical Nakano vanishing theorem with Hörmander $L^2$-estimates on a compact Kähler manifold using Siu's so called $\partial\dbar$-Bochner-Kodaira method, thereby avoiding the Kähler identities completely. We then introduce singular hermitian metrics on holomorphic vector bundles, and proceed to prove a vanishing theorem of Demailly-Nadel type for these in the special case where the base manifold is a Riemann surface.
Using the techniques of J.-P. Demailly and Th. Peternell in math.AG/0208021 a weak version of Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing is proven for pseudo-effective line bundles on compact Kaehler manifolds. It is a weak version, since one has to adjust the line bundle $K_X + L$ with the upper regularized multiplier ideal sheaf $I_+(L)$ of $L$, and this is already not optimal in the nef case.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension three and let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. In this paper, we provide a lower bound of the dimension of the global sections of $m(K_{X}+L)$ under the assumption that $κ(K_{X}+L)$ is non-negative. In particular, we get the following: (1) if $κ(K_{X}+L)$ is greater than or equal to zero and less than or equal to two, then $h^{0}(K_{X}+L)$ is positive. (2) If $κ(K_{X}+L)$ is equal to three, then $h^{0}(2(K_{X}+L))$ is greater than or equal to three. Moreover we get a classification of $(X,L)$ such that $κ(K_{X}+L)$ is equal to thre…
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and let $(L, φ)$ be a pseudo-effective line bundle on $X$. We first define a notion of numerical dimension of pseudo-effective line bundles with singular metrics, and then discuss the properties of this type numerical dimension. We finally prove a very general Kawamata-Viehweg-Nadel type vanishing theorem on an arbitrary compact Kähler manifold.
Let SU_X(3) be the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of rank 3 and trivial determinant on a curve X of genus 2. It maps onto P^8 and the map is a double cover branched over a sextic hypersurface called the Coble sextic. In the dual P^8 there is a unique cubic hypersurface, the Coble cubic, singular exactly along the abelian surface of degree 1 line bundles on X. We give a new proof that these two hypersurfaces are dual. As an immediate corollary, we derive a Torelli-type result.
We study a singular Hermitian metric of a vector bundle. First, we prove the sheaf of locally square integrable holomorphic sections of a vector bundle with a singular Hermitian metric, which is a higher rank analogy of a multiplier ideal sheaf, is coherent under some assumptions. Second, we prove a Nadel-Nakano type vanishing theorem of a vector bundle with a singular Hermitian metric. We do not use an approximation technique of a singular Hermitian metric. We apply these theorems to a singular Hermitian metric induced by holomorphic sections and a big vector bundle, and we obtain a generaliz…
Let $E$ be a vector bundle and $L$ be a line bundle over a smooth projective variety $X$. In this article, we give a condition for the vanishing of Dolbeault cohomology groups of the form $H^{p,q}(X,\SSS^αE\otimes \wedge^β E\otimes L)$ when $S^{α+β}E \otimes L$ is ample. This condition is shown to be invariant under the interchange of $p$ and $q$. The optimality of this condition is discussed for some parameter values.
