In this article we prove a general result on a nef vector bundle $E$ on a projective manifold $X$ of dimension $n$ depending on the vector space $H^{n,n} (X, E). $ It is also shown that $H^{n,n} (X, E)=0$ for an indecomposable nef rank 2 vector bundles $E$ on some specific type of $n$ dimensional projective manifold $X.$ The same vanishing shown to hold for indecomposable nef and big rank 2 vector bundles on any variety with trivial canonical bundle.
We show that over any algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, there exists a smooth rational surface which violates Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing.
We prove that the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem holds on rational surfaces in positive characteristic by means of the lifting property to W_2(k) of certain log pairs on smooth rational surfaces. As a corollary, the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem holds on log del Pezzo surfaces in positive characteristic.
We give counterexamples to the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem on ruled surfaces in positive characteristic, and prove that if there is a counterexample to the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem on a geometrically ruled surface f:X-->C, then either C is a Tango curve or all of sections of f are ample.
In this paper, we prove a Kawamata--Viehweg type vanishing theorem for smooth Fano threefolds, canonical del Pezzo surfaces and del Pezzo fibrations in positive characteristic.
In this article we prove that the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem holds for regular del Pezzo surfaces over imperfect ground fields of characteristic $p>3$.
We construct a klt del Pezzo surface in characteristic three violating the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem. As a consequence we show that there exists a Kawamata log terminal threefold singularity which is not Cohen-Macaulay in characteristic three.
In this largely expository article, we present a Kawamata-Viehweg type formulation of the (logarithmic) Akizuki-Nakano Vanishing Theorem. While the result is likely known to the experts, it does not seem to appear in the existing literature.
We give a criterion for a divisorial sheaf on a log terminal variety to be Cohen-Macaulay. The log canonical case and applications to moduli are also considered.
We associate to a pair $(X,D)$, consisting of a smooth scheme with a divisor $D\in \text{Div}(X)\otimes \mathbb{Q}$ whose support is a divisor with normal crossings, a canonical Deligne--Mumford stack over $X$ on which $D$ becomes integral. We then reinterpret the Kawamata--Viehweg vanishing theorem as Kodaira vanishing for stacks.
Using the techniques of J.-P. Demailly and Th. Peternell in math.AG/0208021 a weak version of Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing is proven for pseudo-effective line bundles on compact Kaehler manifolds. It is a weak version, since one has to adjust the line bundle $K_X + L$ with the upper regularized multiplier ideal sheaf $I_+(L)$ of $L$, and this is already not optimal in the nef case.
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and let $(L, φ)$ be a pseudo-effective line bundle on $X$. We first define a notion of numerical dimension of pseudo-effective line bundles with singular metrics, and then discuss the properties of this type numerical dimension. We finally prove a very general Kawamata-Viehweg-Nadel type vanishing theorem on an arbitrary compact Kähler manifold.
A smooth scheme X over a field k of positive characteristic is said to be strongly liftable, if X and all prime divisors on X can be lifted simultaneously over W_2(k). In this paper, we give some concrete examples and properties of strongly liftable schemes. As an application, we prove that the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem in positive characteristic holds on any normal projective surface which is birational to a strongly liftable surface.
A smooth scheme X over a field k of positive characteristic is said to be strongly liftable, if X and all prime divisors on X can be lifted simultaneously over W_2(k). In this paper, first we prove that smooth toric varieties are strongly liftable. As a corollary, we obtain the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for smooth projective toric varieties. Second, we prove the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for normal projective surfaces which are birational to a strongly liftable smooth projective surface. Finally, we deduce the cyclic cover trick over W_2(k), which can be used to construct a l…
We prove the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for surfaces of del Pezzo type over perfect fields of positive characteristic $p>5$. As a consequence, we show that klt threefold singularities over a perfect base field of characteristic $p>5$ are rational. We show that these theorems are sharp by providing counterexamples in characteristic $5$.
In this paper, we provide an $L^2$ fine resolution of the prolongation of a nilpotent harmonic bundle in the sense of Simpson-Mochizuki (an analytic analogue of the Kashiwara-Malgrange filtrations). This is the logarithmic analogue of Cattani-Kaplan-Schmid's and Kashiwara-Kawai's results on the $L^2$ interpretation of the intersection complex. As an application, we give an $L^2$-theoretic proof to the Nadel-Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem with coefficients in a nilpotent Higgs bundle.
This paper proves that the 5-canonical map of a smooth minimal 3-fold is birational when the geometric genus is bigger than 2. A combination of the results in this paper and that of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Lee, the possible exceptional cases are very limited. Unfortunately, no counter examples have been found up to now.
A smooth scheme X over a field k of positive characteristic is said to be strongly liftable over W_2(k), if X and all prime divisors on X can be lifted simultaneously over W_2(k). In this paper, we first deduce the Kummer covering trick over W_2(k), which can be used to construct a large class of smooth projective varieties liftable over W_2(k), and to give a direct proof of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem on strongly liftable schemes. Secondly, we generalize almost all of the results in [Xie10, Xie11] to the case where everything is considered over W(k), the ring of Witt vectors of k.
The purpose of this note is to show how the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for fractional divisors leads to a quick new proof of Bogomolov's instability theorem for rank two vector bundles on an algebraic surface.
In this paper we establish a Nadel-type vanishing theorem and a Kawamata--Viehweg-type vanishing theorem concerning the asymptotic multiplier ideal sheaf on a compact Kähler manifold $X$. After that, we provide a relative variant.
We prove a Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem on a normal compact Kahler space X: if L is a nef line bundle with numerical dimension at least equal to 2, then the q-th cohomology group of K_X+L vanishes for q at least equal to the dimension of X minus 1. As an application, a special case of the abundance conjecture for minimal Kahler threefolds is proven: if X is a minimal Kahler threefold (in the usual sense that K_X is nef), then the Kodaira dimension kappa(X) is nonnegative.
We prove a surjectivity theorem for the Deligne canonical extension of a polarizable variation of Hodge structure with quasi-unipotent monodromy at infinity along the lines of Esnault-Viehweg. We deduce from it several injectivity theorems and vanishing theorems for pure Hodge modules. We also give an inductive proof of Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing for the lowest graded piece of the Hodge filtration of a pure Hodge module using mixed Hodge modules of nearby cycles.
We prove the injectivity and vanishing theorem for R-Hodge modules and R-divisors over projective varieties, extending the results for rational Hodge modules and integral divisors in \cite{Wu15}. In particular, the injectivity generalizes the fundamental injectivity of Esnault-Viehweg for normal crossing Q-divisors, while the vanishing generalizes Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing for Q-divisors. As a main application, we also deduce a Fujita-type freeness result for R-Hodge modules in the normal crossing case.
We give a theorem on the effective non-vanishing problem for algebraic surfaces in positive characteristic. For the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing, the logarithmic Kollar vanishing and the logarithmic semipositivity, we give their counterexamples on ruled surfaces in positive characteristic.
We study the relationship between positivity of line bundles restricted to complete intersection subvarieties and the vanishing of higher cohomology groups. Based on this connection we prove generalizations of the vanishing theorems of Kawamata-Viehweg and Fujita that are valid for not necessarily big line bundles.
We give an alternative proof of Kovács' vanishing theorem. Our proof is based on the standard arguments of the minimal model theory. We do not need the notion of Du Bois pairs. We reduce Kovács' vanishing theorem to the well-known relative Kawamata--Viehweg--Nadel vanishing theorem.
This paper contains a Kawamata-Viehweg-Kollár type vanishing theorem for vector bundles. In order to formulate and prove this cleanly, we introduce a class of sheaves that automatically satisfies a vanishing theorem. This is obtained by closing up the subclass of sheaves of adjoint type under extensions, direct images, and taking direct summands.
In this article we prove a relative Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing-type theorem for PLT $3$-folds in characteristic $p>5$. We use this to prove the normality of minimal log canonical centers and the adjunction formula for codimension $2$ subvarieties on $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial $3$-folds in characteristic $p>5$.
In this note we show a Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for pl-contractions on threefolds in characteristic $p>5$. We deduce several applications for klt threefolds: the vanishing of higher direct images of structure sheaves of Mori fibre spaces, Kollár's result on local vanishing and the rationality of the singularities of the base of a conic bundle.
In this paper, we clarify the mistakes made in the former article entitled "Vanishing Theorems on Toric Varieties in Positive Characteristic". On the other hand, we use the positive characteristic method to reprove the Bott vanishing theorem, the degeneration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence and the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for log pairs on toric varieties over a field of arbitrary characteristic, where concerned Weil divisors are torus invariant.
We use the liftability of the relative Frobenius morphism of toric varieties and the strong liftability of toric varieties to prove the Bott vanishing theorem, the degeneration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence and the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for log pairs on toric varieties in positive characteristic. These results generalize those results of Danilov, Buch-Thomsen-Lauritzen-Mehta, Mustata and Fujino to the case where concerned Weil divisors are not necessarily torus invariant.
Given a smooth projective variety over a perfect field of positive characteristic, we prove that the higher cohomologies vanish for the tensor product of the Witt canonical sheaf and the Teichmuller lift of an ample invertible sheaf. We also give a generalisation of this vanishing theorem to one of Kawamata-Viehweg type.
We show that any pseudo-effective divisor on a normal surface decomposes uniquely into its "integral positive" part and "integral negative" part, which is an integral analog of Zariski decompositions. By using this decomposition, we give three applications: a vanishing theorem of divisors on surfaces (a generalization of Kawamata-Viehweg and Miyaoka vanishing theorems), Reider-type theorems of adjoint linear systems on surfaces (including a log version and a relative version of the original one) and extension theorems of morphisms defined on curves on surfaces (generalizations of Serrano and P…
In this paper, we introduce a coherent subsheaf of Saito's $S$-sheaf, which is a combination of the $S$-sheaf and the multiplier ideal sheaf. We construct its $L^2$-Dolbeault resolution, which generalizes MacPherson's conjecture on the $L^2$ resolution of the Grauert-Riemenschneider sheaf. We also prove various vanishing theorems for the $S$-sheaf (Saito's vanishing theorem, Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem and some new ones like Nadel vanishing theorem) transcendentally. Finally, we discuss some applications of our results on the relative version of Fujita's conjecture (e.g. Kawamata's conj…
We prove a relative Kawamata Viehweg vanishing type theorem for birational morphisms. We use this to prove a Grauert Riemenschneider theorem over log canonical threefolds without zero dimensional log canonical centers, in residue characteristic p greater than five. In large enough residue characteristics, we prove a Grauert Riemenschneider theorem over threefold log canonical singularities with standard coefficients. These vanishing theorems can also be used to study the depth of log canonical singularities at non log canonical centers, as well as the singularities of the log canonical centers…
This work discusses combinatorial and arithmetic aspects of cohomology vanishing for divisorial sheaves on toric varieties. We obtain a refined variant of the Kawamata-Viehweg theorem which is slightly stronger. Moreover, we prove a new vanishing theorem related to divisors whose inverse is nef and has small Kodaira dimension. Finally, we give a new criterion for divisorial sheaves for being maximal Cohen-Macaulay.
In this paper, we first establish an $L^2$-type Dolbeault isomorphism for logarithmic differential forms by Hörmander's $L^2$-estimates. By using this isomorphism and the construction of smooth Hermitian metrics, we obtain a number of new vanishing theorems for sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on compact Kähler manifolds with simple normal crossing divisors, which generalize several classical vanishing theorems, including Norimatsu's vanishing theorem, Gibrau's vanishing theorem, Le Potier's vanishing theorem and a version of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem.
The purpose of this paper is to give two supplements for vanishing theorems: One is a relative version of the Kawamata-Viehweg-Nadel type vanishing theorem, which is obtained from an observation for the variation of the numerical dimension of singular hermitian line bundles. The other is an analytic injectivity theorem for log canonical pairs on surfaces, which can be seen as a partial answer for Fujino's conjecture.

We use a sheaf-theoretic approach to obtain a blow-up formula for Dolbeault cohomology groups with values in the holomorphic vector bundle over a compact complex manifold. As applications, we present several positive (or negative) examples associated to the vanishing theorems of Girbau, Kawamata-Viehweg and Green-Lazarsfeld in a uniform manner and study the blow-up invariance of some classical holomorphic invariants.
The purpose of this paper is to establish injectivity theorems for higher direct image sheaves of canonical bundles twisted by pseudo-effective line bundles and multiplier ideal sheaves. As applications, we generalize Koll'ar's torsion freeness and Grauert-Riemenschneider's vanishing theorem. Moreover, we obtain a relative vanishing theorem of Kawamata-Viehweg-Nadel type and an extension theorem for holomorphic sections from fibers of morphisms to the ambient space. Our approach is based on transcendental methods and works for K"ahler morphisms and singular hermitian metrics with non-algebraic…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ with arbitrary characteristic. Suppose $L$ is an ample and globally generated line bundle. By Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity, we show that $K_X \otimes L^{\otimes \dim X} \otimes A$ is globally generated and $K_X \otimes L^{\otimes (\dim X+1)} \otimes A$ is very ample, provided the line bundle $A$ is nef but not numerically trivial. On complex projective varieties, by investigating Kawamata-Viehweg-Nadel type vanishing theorems for vector bundles, we also obtain the global generation for adjoint vector bund…
We introduce a notion of singular hermitian metrics (s.h.m.) for holomorphic vector bundles and define positivity in view of $L^2$-estimates. Associated with a suitably positive s.h.m. there is a (coherent) sheaf 0-th kernel of a certain $d''$-complex. We prove a vanishing theorem for the cohomology of this sheaf. All this generalizes to the case of higher rank known results of Nadel for the case of line bundles. We introduce a new semi-positivity notion, $t$-nefness, for vector bundles, establish some of its basic properties and prove that on curves it coincides with ordinary nefness. We part…
Andreotti-Vesentini, Ohsawa, Gromov, Kollár, among others, have observed that Hodge theory could be extended to (non compact) Kähler complete manifolds, within the L^2 framework. Also, many vanishing theorems on projective or Kähler manifolds rely on the Kodaira-Bochner-Nakano identity, and thus possess natural L^2 versions. Our goal is to define canonical L^2 cohomology groups on any unramified covering of an analytic variety X, with values in a coherent analytic sheaf on X. This cohomology shares all usual properties of standard coherent sheaf cohomology (especially, exact sequences, spectra…
The notes start with an elementary introduction to a few important analytic techniques of algebraic geometry: closed positive currents, $L^2$ estimates for the $\dbar$-operator on positive vector bundles, Nadel's vanishing theorem for multiplier ideal sheaves (a generalization of the well-known Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem). Applications to adjoint line bundles are then discussed. T.~Fujita conjectured in 1987 that $K_X+(n+2)L$ is very ample for every ample line bundle $L$ on a non singular projective variety $X$ with $\dim X=n$. The answer is known only for $n\le 2$ (I.~Reider, 1988). I…
The goal of this survey is to present various results concerning the cohomology of pseudoeffective line bundles on compact K{ä}hler manifolds, and related properties of their multiplier ideal sheaves. In case the curvature is strictly positive, the prototype is the well known Nadel vanishing theorem, which is itself a generalized analytic version of the fundamental Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem of algebraic geometry. We are interested here in the case where the curvature is merely semipositive in the sense of currents, and the base manifold is not necessarily projective. In this situation…
Generalizing work of Smith and Hara, we give a new characterization of log-terminal singularities for finitely generated algebras over $\mathbb C$, in terms of purity properties of ultraproducts of characteristic $p$ Frobenii. The first application is a Boutôt-type theorem for log-terminal singularities: given a pure morphism $Y\to X$ between affine $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein varieties of finite type over $\mathbb C$, if $Y$ has at most a log-terminal singularities, then so does $X$. The second application is the Vanishing for Maps of Tor for log-terminal singularities: if $A\subset R$ is a Noethe…
