We generalize a vanishing theorem for the cohomology of symmetric powers of the cotangent bundle of subvarieties of projective space due to Schneider. From this we deduce new vanishing results for Green-Griffiths jet differential bundles, generalizing results of Diverio and Pacienza-Rousseau.
Let X be a homogeneous space of a quasi-trivial k-group G, with geometric stabilizer H, over a number field k. We prove that under certain conditions on the character group of H, certain algebraic Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle and weak approximation vanish, because the abelian groups where they take values vanish. When H is connected or abelian, these algebraic Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle and weak approximation are the only ones, so we prove the Hasse principle and weak approximation for X under certain conditions. As an application, we obtain new suffic…
In this paper we discuss an obstruction to the integral Hodge conjecture, which arises from certain behavior of vanishing cycles. This allows us to construct new counter-examples to the integral Hodge conjecture. One typical such counter-example is the product of a very general hypersurface of odd dimension and an Enriques surface. Our approach generalizes the degeneration argument of Benoist-Ottem.
We resume the study initiated in \cite{CL}. For a generic curve $C$ in an ample linear system $\vert \mathcal{L} \vert$ on a toric surface $X$, a vanishing cycle of $C$ is an isotopy class of simple closed curve that can be contracted to a point along a degeneration of $C$ to a nodal curve in $\vert \mathcal{L} \vert$. The obstructions that prevent a simple closed curve in $C$ from being a vanishing cycle are encoded by the adjoint line bundle $K_X \otimes \mathcal{L}$. In this paper, we consider the linear systems carrying the two simplest types of obstruction. Geometrically, these obstructio…
Let $(Y,A)$ be a smooth rational surface or a possibly singular toric surface with ample divisor $A$. We show that a family of ECH-based, algebro-geometric invariants $c^{\text{alg}}_k(Y,A)$ proposed by Wormleighton obstruct symplectic embeddings into $Y$. Precisely, if $(X,ω_X)$ is a $4$-dimensional star-shaped domain and $ω_Y$ is a symplectic form Poincaré dual to $[A]$ then \[(X,ω_X)\text{ embeds into }(Y,ω_Y)\text{ symplectically } \implies c^{\text{ECH}}_k(X,ω_X) \le c^{\text{alg}}_k(Y,A)\] We give three applications to toric embedding problems: (1) these obstructions are sharp for embedd…
We study rank-one sheaves and stable pairs on a smooth projective complex surface. We obtain an embedding of the moduli space of limit stable pairs into a smooth space. The embedding induces a perfect obstruction theory, which, over a surface with irregularity 0, agrees with the usual deformation-obstruction theory. The perfect obstruction theory defines a virtual fundamental class on the moduli space. Using the embedding, we show that the virtual class equals the Euler class of a vector bundle on the smooth ambient space. As an application, we show that on $\mathbb{P}^2$, the expected count o…
For $G$ a split semi-simple group scheme and $P$ a principal $G$-bundle on a relative curve $X\to S$, we study a natural obstruction for the triviality of $P$ on the complement of a relatively ample Cartier divisor $D \subset X$. We show, by constructing explicit examples, that the obstruction is nontrivial if $G$ is not simply connected but it can be made to vanish, if $S$ is the spectrum of a dvr (and some other hypotheses), by a faithfully flat base change. The vanishing of this obstruction is shown to be a sufficient condition for etale local triviality if $S$ is a smooth curve, and the si…
We consider regular polystable Higgs pairs $(E, ϕ)$ on compact complex manifolds. We show that a non-trivial Higgs field $ϕ\in H^0 ({\rm End} (E) \otimes K_S)$ restricts the Ricci curvature of the manifold, generalising previous results in the literature. In particular $ϕ$ must vanish for positive Ricci curvature, while for trivial canonical bundle it must be proportional to the identity. For Kähler surfaces, our results provide a new vanishing theorem for solutions to the Vafa--Witten equations. Moreover they constrain supersymmetric 7-brane configurations in F-theory, giving obstructions to …
On a group $G$, a filtration by normal subgroups is referred to as a normal series. If subsequent quotients are abelian, the filtration is referred to as an \emph{abelian-quotient normal series}, or `AQ normal series' for short. In this article we consider `sheaves of AQ normal series'. From a given AQ normal series satisfying an additional hypothesis we derive a complex whose first cohomology obstructs the resolution of an `integration problem'. These constructs are then applied to the classification of supermanifolds modelled on $(X, T^*_{X, -})$, where $X$ is a complex manifold and $T^*_{X,…
