We explicitly compute the ellitpic points and isotropy groups for the action of the Picard modular group over the Gaussian integers on 2-dimensional complex hyperbolic space.
Motivated by the relationship of classical modular functions and Picard--Fuchs linear differential equations of order 2 and 3, we present an analogous concept for equations of order 4 and 5.
We compute the cohomology with compact supports of a Picard modular surface as a virtual module over the product of the appropriate Galois group and the appropriate Hecke algebra. We use the method developed by Ihara, Langlands, and Kottwitz: comparison of the Grothendieck-Lefschetz formula and the Arthur-Selberg trace formula. Our implementation of this method takes as its starting point the works of Laumon and Morel.
Let Gamma be a congruence subgroup of the Picard modular group of an imaginary number field k, and let D be the associated symmetric space. We describe a method to compute the integral cohomology of the locally symmetric space Gamma\D. The method is implemented for the case k=Q(i) and k=Q(sqrt(-3)), and the cohomology is computed for various Gamma.
We study the supersingular curves on Picard modular surfaces modulo a prime $p$ which is inert in the underlying quadratic imaginary field. We analyze the automorphic vector bundles in characteristic $p$, and as an application derive a formula relating the number of irreducible components in the supersingular locus to the second Chern class of the surface.
The relations satisfied by period polynomials associated to modular forms yield a way to count dimensions of spaces of cusp forms. After showing how these relations arise from those on the mapping class group $PSL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,4}$ of genus 0 curves with 4 marked points, the author goes on to define period polynomials associated to Picard modular forms. Relations on these Picard period polynomials are then determined, and via an embedding of a monodromy representation of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,5}$ of genus 0 curves with 5 marked points in $PU(2,1…
We formulate a detailed conjectural Eichler-Shimura type formula for the cohomology of local systems on a Picard modular surface associated to the group of unitary similitudes $\mathrm{GU}(2,1,\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3}))$. The formula is based on counting points over finite fields on curves of genus three which are cyclic triple covers of the projective line. Assuming the conjecture we are able to calculate traces of Hecke operators on spaces of Picard modular forms. We provide ample evidence for the conjectural formula. Along the way we prove new results on characteristic polynomials of Frobenius …
In this article we construct a $p$-adic three dimensional Eigenvariety for the group $U(2,1)(E)$, where $E$ is a quadratic imaginary field and $p$ is inert in $E$. The Eigenvariety parametrizes Hecke eigensystems on the space of overconvergent, locally analytic, cuspidal Picard modular forms of finite slope. The method generalized the one developed in Andreatta-Iovita-Pilloni by interpolating the coherent automorphic sheaves when the ordinary locus is empty. As an application of this construction, we reprove a particular case of the Bloch-Kato conjecture for some Galois characters of $E$, exte…
We study the reduction of Picard modular surfaces modulo an inert prime, mod p and p-adic modular forms. We construct a theta operator on such modular forms and study its poles and its effect on Fourier-Jacobi expansions.
We determine the number of cusps of minimal Picard modular surfaces. The proof also counts cusps of other Picard modular surfaces of arithmetic interest. Consequently, for each N > 0 there are finitely many commensurability classes of nonuniform arithmetic lattices in SU(2, 1) that contain an N-cusped surface. We also discuss a higher-rank analogue.
We study variations of Hodge structures over a Picard modular surface, and compute the weights and types of their degenerations through the cusps of the Baily-Borel compactification. The main tool is a theorem of Burgos and Wildeshaus.
We construct generators for modules of vector-valued Picard modular forms on a unitary group of type (2,1) over the Eisenstein integers. We also calculate eigenvalues of Hecke operators acting on cusp forms.
In this article, for $n\geq 2$, we compute asymptotic, qualitative, and quantitative estimates of the Bergman kernel of Picard modular cusp forms associated to torsion-free, cocompact subgroups of $\mathrm{SU}\big((n,1),\mathbb{C}\big)$. The main result of the article is the following result. Let $Γ\subset \mathrm{SU}\big((2,1),\mathcal{O}_{K}\big)$ be a torsion-free subgroup of finite index, where $K$ is a totally imaginary field. Let $\mathcal{B}_Γ^{k}$ denote the Bergman kernel associated to the $\mathcal{S}_{k}(Γ)$, complex vector space of weight-$k$ cusp forms with respect to $Γ$. Let $\m…
We investigate arithmetic aspects of the middle degree cohomology of compactified Picard modular surfaces $X$ attached to the unitary similitude group $\mathrm{GU}(2,1)$ for an imaginary quadratic extension $E/\mathbf{Q}$. We construct new Beilinson--Flach classes on $X$ and compute their Archimedean regulator. We obtain a special value formula involving a non-critical $L$-value of the degree six standard $L$-function, a Whittaker period, and the regulator. This provides evidence for Beilinson's conjecture in this setting.
The coefficient series of the holomorphic Picard-Fuchs differential equation associated with the periods of elliptic curves often have surprising number-theoretic properties. These have been widely studied in the case of the torsion-free, genus zero congruence subgroups of index 6 and 12 (e.g. the Beauville families). Here, we consider arithmetic properties of the Picard-Fuchs solutions associated to general elliptic families, with a particular focus on the index 24 congruence subgroups. We prove that elliptic families with rational parameters admit linear reparametrizations such that their as…
We address the problem of computing in the group of $\ell^k$-torsion rational points of the jacobian variety of algebraic curves over finite fields, with a view toward computing modular representations.
Given an imaginary quadratic extension $K$ of $\mathbb Q$, we give a classification of the maximal nonelementary subgroups of the Picard modular group $\operatorname{PSU}_{1,2}(\mathcal O_K)$ preserving a complex geodesic in the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H^2_\mathbb C$. Complementing work of Holzapfel, Chinburg-Stover and Möller-Toledo, we show that these maximal $\mathbb C$-Fuchsian subgroups are arithmetic, arising from a quaternion algebra $\Big(\!\begin{array}{c} D\,,D_K\\\hline\mathbb QQ\end{array} \!\Big)$ for some explicit $D\in\mathbb N-\{0\}$ and $D_K$ the discriminant of $K$.…
We compute the Picard group of the stack of elliptic curves equipped with a cyclic subgroup of order two, and of the stack of elliptic curves equipped with a cyclic subgroup of order three, over any base scheme on which 6 is invertible. This generalizes a result of Fulton-Olsson, who computed the Picard group of the stack of elliptic curves (with no level structure) over a wide variety of base schemes.
Cléry and van der Geer determined generators for some modules of vector valued Picard modular forms on the two dimensional ball. In this paper we consider the case of a three dimensional ball with the action of the Picard modular group $Γ_3[\sqrt{-3}]$. The corresponding modular variety of dimension 3 is a copy of the Segre cubic.
We determine explicit birational models over Q for the modular surfaces parametrising pairs of N-congruent elliptic curves in all cases where this surface is an elliptic surface. In each case we also determine the rank of the Mordell-Weil lattice and the geometric Picard number.
We investigate modularity of elliptic curves over a general totally real number field, establishing a finiteness result for the set non-modular $j$-invariants. By analyzing quadratic points on some modular curves, we show that all elliptic curves over certain real quadratic fields are modular.
For every normalized newform f in S_2(Gamma_1(N)) with complex multiplication, we study the modular parametrizations of elliptic curves C from the abelian variety A_f. We apply the results obtained when C is Gross's elliptic curve A(p).
We prove that all elliptic curves defined over totally real cubic fields are modular. This builds on previous work of Freitas, Le Hung and Siksek, who proved modularity of elliptic curves over real quadratic fields, as well as recent breakthroughs due to Thorne and to Kalyanswamy.
The aim of this paper is to show lifts from pairs of two elliptic modular forms to Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of even degree under the assumption that the constructed Siegel modular form is not identically zero. The key of the proof is to introduce a certain generalization of the Maass relation for Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of general degree.
We define "values" of the elliptic modular j-function at real quadratic irrationalities by using Hecke's hyperbolic Fourier expansions, and present some observations based on numerical experiments.
Kaneko and Sakai recently observed that certain elliptic curves whose associated newforms (by the modularity theorem) are given by the eta-quotients can be characterized by a particular differential equation involving modular forms and Ramanujan-Serre differential operator. In this paper, we study certain properties of modular parametrizations associated to the elliptic curves over Q, and as a consequence we generalize and explain some of their findings.
We use methods for computing Picard numbers of reductions of K3 surfaces in order to study the decomposability of Jacobians over number fields and the variance of Mordell-Weil ranks of families of Jacobians over different ground fields. For example, we give examples of surfaces whose Picard numbers jump in rank at all primes of good reduction using Mordell-Weil groups of Jacobians and show that the genus of curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isomorphic to a product of elliptic curves satisfying certain reduction conditions is bounded. The isomorphism result addresses the number fiel…
We prove that every elliptic curve defined over a totally real number field of degree 4 not containing $\sqrt{5}$ is modular. To this end, we study the quartic points on four modular curves.
We present a detailed analysis of how to implement the computation of modular symbols for a given elliptic curve by using numerical approximations. This method turns out to be more efficient than current implementation as the conductor of the curve increases.
We study the existence of rational points on modular curves of $\cal{D}$-elliptic sheaves over local fields and the structure of special fibres of these curves. We discuss some applications which include finding presentations for arithmetic groups arising from quaternion algebras, finding the equations of modular curves of $\cal{D}$-elliptic sheaves, and constructing curves violating the Hasse principle.
Let K be a number field and E/K a modular elliptic curve, with modular parametrization $X_0(N) \to E$ defined over K. The purpose of this note is to study the images in E of classes of isogenous points in X_0(N).
This version improves the old version entitled "On the modularity of elliptic curves with a residually irreducible representation". Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over an abelian totally real field $K$ unramified at 3,5, and 7. We prove that $E$ is modular.
Let F be the cubic field of discriminant -23 and let O be its ring of integers. By explicitly computing cohomology of congruence subgroups of GL(2,O), we computationally investigate modularity of elliptic curves over F.
We study generalisations to totally real fields of methods originating with Wiles and Taylor-Wiles. In view of the results of Skinner-Wiles on elliptic curves with ordinary reduction, we focus here on the case of supersingular reduction. Combining these, we then obtain some partial results on the modularity problem for semistable elliptic curves, and end by giving some applications of our results, for example proving the modularity of all semistable elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2})$.
We study differential equations satisfied by modular forms associated to $Γ_1\timesΓ_2$, where $Γ_i (i=1,2)$ are genus zero subgroups of $SL_2(\mathbf R)$ commensurable with $SL_2(\mathbf Z)$, e.g., $Γ_0(N)$ or $Γ_0(N)^*$. In some examples, these differential equations are realized as the Picard--Fuch differential equations of families of K3 surfaces with large Picard numbers, e.g., $19, 18, 17, 16$. Our method rediscovers some of the Lian--Yau examples of ``modular relations'' involving power series solutions to the second and the third order differential equations of Fuchsian type in [14, 15…
In this paper, we extend previous results to prove that generalized modular forms with rational Fourier expansions whose divisors are supported only at the cusps and certain other points in the upper half plane are actually classical modular forms. We discuss possible limitations to this extension and pose questions about possible zeroes for modular forms of prime level.
We study several aspects of nonvanishing Fourier coefficients of elliptic modular forms $\bmod \ell$, partially answering a question of Bellaïche-Soundararajan concerning the asymptotic formula for the count of the number of Fourier coefficients upto $x$ which do not vanish $\bmod \ell$. We also propose a precise conjecture as a possible answer to this question. Further, we prove several results related to the nonvanishing of arithmetically interesting (e.g., primitive or fundamental) Fourier coefficients $\bmod \ell $ of a Siegel modular form with integral algebraic Fourier coefficients provi…
Let $E / \mathbb{Q}$ and $A / \mathbb{Q}$ be elliptic curves. We can construct modular points derived from $A$ via the modular parametrisation of $E$. With certain assumptions we can show that these points are of infinite order and are not divisible by a prime $p$. In particular, using Kolyvagin's construction of derivative classes, we can find elements in certain Shafarevich-Tate groups of order $p^{n}$.
We derive an explicit zero-free region for symmetric square L-functions of elliptic curves, and use this to derive an explicit lower bound for the modular degree of rational elliptic curves. The techniques are similar to those used in the classical derivation of zero-free regions for Dirichlet L-functions, but here, due to the work of Goldfield-Hoffstein-Lieman, we know that there are no Siegel zeros, which leads to a strengthened result.
Many rationally parametrized elliptic modular equations are derived. Each comes from a family of elliptic curves attached to a genus-zero congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$, as an algebraic transformation of elliptic curve periods, parametrized by a Hauptmodul (function field generator). The periods satisfy a Picard-Fuchs equation, of hypergeometric, Heun, or more general type; so the new modular equations are algebraic transformations of special functions. When N=4,3,2 they are modular transformations of Ramanujan's elliptic integrals of signatures 2,3,4. This gives a modern interpretation to his t…
In this paper we prove the finiteness of the set of S-integral points of a punctured rational elliptic curve without complex multiplication using the Chabauty-Kim method. This extends previous results of Kim in the complex multiplication case. The key input of our approach is the use of modularity techniques to prove the vanishing of certain Selmer groups involved in the Chabauty-Kim method.
We prove that all elliptic curves defined over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a real quadratic field are modular under the assumption that the algebraic part of the central value of a twisted $L$-function is a $p$-adic unit. Our result is a generalization of a result of X. Zhang, which is a real quadratic analogue of a result of Thorne.
We calculate an explicit lower bound on the proportion of elliptic curves that are modular over any Galois CM field not containing $ζ_5$. Applied to imaginary quadratic fields, this proportion is at least $2/5$. Applied to cyclotomic fields $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_n)$ with $5\nmid n$, this proportion is at least $1-\varepsilon$ with only finitely many exceptions of $n$, for any choice of $\varepsilon > 0$.
