We study several aspects of nonvanishing Fourier coefficients of elliptic modular forms $\bmod \ell$, partially answering a question of Bellaïche-Soundararajan concerning the asymptotic formula for the count of the number of Fourier coefficients upto $x$ which do not vanish $\bmod \ell$. We also propose a precise conjecture as a possible answer to this question. Further, we prove several results related to the nonvanishing of arithmetically interesting (e.g., primitive or fundamental) Fourier coefficients $\bmod \ell $ of a Siegel modular form with integral algebraic Fourier coefficients provided $\ell$ is large enough. We also make some efforts to make this "largeness" of $\ell$ effective.
The aim of this paper is to show lifts from pairs of two elliptic modular forms to Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of even degree under the assumption that the constructed Siegel modular form is not identically zero. The key of the proof is to introduce a certain generalization of the Maass relation for Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of general degree.
It is shown that for any prime $p$ and any natural numbers $\ell, m,$ and $s$ such that $0<s<p$, the three following congruences \begin{align*}\sum_{i\ge \ell+1}(-1)^{m-i} {m \choose i}{m+s-1+i(p-1) \choose m+s-1+\ell(p-1)} &\equiv 0 \bmod p\\ \sum_{i\ge 0}(-1)^{m-i} {m \choose i}{\ell+ip \choose m+s-1}&\equiv 0 \bmod p^m\\ \sum_{j,i\ge \ell}(-1)^{j-i}{m \choose j} {j \choose i}{j+s-1+i(p-1) \choose j+s-1+\ell(p-1)}&\equiv 0 \bmod p^{m-\ell} \end{align*} hold true. The corresponding quotients involve Adelberg polynomials which can be computed explicitly, providing closed-form expressions for t…
We prove an analogue of the Brauer-Siegel theorem for the Legendre elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. More precisely, if $d$ is an integer coprime to $q$, we denote by $E_d$ the elliptic curve with model $y^2=x(x+1)(x+t^d)$ over $K=\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We give an asymptotic estimate of the product of the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E_d$ (which is known to be finite) with its Néron-Tate regulator, in terms of the exponential differential height of $E_d$, as $d\to\infty$.
We study the image of the $\ell$-adic Galois representations associated to the four vector valued Siegel modular forms appearing in the work of Chenevier and Lannes. These representations are symplectic of dimension $4$. Following a method of Dieulefait, we determine the primes $\ell$ for which these representations are absolutely irreducible. In addition, we show that their image is "full" for all primes $\ell$ such that the associated residual representation is absolutely irreducible, except in two cases.
We study elliptic curves of the form $x^3+y^3=2p$ and $x^3+y^3=2p^2$ where $p$ is any odd prime satisfying $p\equiv 2\bmod 9$ or $p\equiv 5\bmod 9$. We first show that the $3$-part of the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture holds for these curves. Then we relate their $2$-Selmer group to the $2$-rank of the ideal class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{p})$ to obtain some examples of elliptic curves with rank one and non-trivial $2$-part of the Tate-Shafarevich group.
Let $π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GSp}_4(\mathbf{A_Q})$, whose archimedean component is a holomorphic discrete series or limit of discrete series representation. If $π$ is not CAP or endoscopic, then we show that its associated $\ell$-adic Galois representations are irreducible and crystalline for $100\%$ of primes $\ell$. If, moreover, $π$ is neither an automorphic induction nor a symmetric cube lift, then we show that, for $100\%$ of primes $\ell$, the image of its mod $\ell$ Galois representation contains $\mathrm{Sp}_4(\mathbf{F}_{\ell})$.
For a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p\geq 5$ and $K=\mathbb{F}_q(t)$, we consider the family of elliptic curves $E_d$ over $K$ given by $y^2+xy - t^dy=x^3$ for all integers $d$ coprime to $q$. We provide an explicit expression for the $L$-functions of these curves in terms of Jacobi sums. Moreover, we deduce from this calculation that the curves $E_d$ satisfy an analogue of the Brauer-Siegel theorem. More precisely, we estimate the asymptotic growth of the product of the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E_d$ (which is known to be finite) by its Néron-Tate regulator, in …
We consider higher-dimensional analogues of the classical Brauer-Siegel theorem focusing on the case of abelian varieties over global function fields. We prove such an analogue in the case of constant families of elliptic curves and abelian varieties.
Assuming that Siegel zeros exist, we prove a hybrid version of the Chowla and Hardy--Littlewood prime tuples conjectures. Thus, for an infinite sequence of natural numbers $x$, and any distinct integers $h_1,\dots,h_k,h'_1,\dots,h'_\ell$, we establish an asymptotic formula for $$\sum_{n\leq x}Λ(n+h_1)\cdots Λ(n+h_k)λ(n+h_{1}')\cdots λ(n+h_{\ell}')$$ for any $0\leq k\leq 2$ and $\ell \geq 0$. Specializing to either $\ell=0$ or $k=0$, we deduce the previously known results on the Hardy--Littlewood (or twin primes) conjecture and the Chowla conjecture under the existence of Siegel zeros, due to H…
We investigate Poincaré series, where we average products of terms of Fourier series of real-analytic Siegel modular forms. There are some (trivial) special cases for which the products of terms of Fourier series of elliptic modular forms and harmonic Maass forms are almost holomorphic, in which case the corresponding Poincaré series are almost holomorphic as well. In general this is not the case. The main point of this paper is the study of Siegel-Poincaré series of degree $2$ attached to products of terms of Fourier series of harmonic Siegel-Maass forms and holomorphic Siegel modular forms. …
Consider a rational point on an elliptic curve under an isogeny. Suppose that the action of Galois partitions the set of its pre-images into n orbits. It is shown that all such points above a certain height have their denominator divisible by at least n distinct primes. This generalizes Siegel's theorem and more recent results of Everest et al. For multiplication by a prime l, it is shown that if n>1 then either the point is l times a rational point or the elliptic curve emits a rational l-isogeny.
Given a non-holomorphic Saito-Kurokawa lift we construct a preimage under the vector-valued lowering operator. In analogy with the case of harmonic weak elliptic Maaß forms, this preimage allows for a natural decomposition into a meromorphic and a non-holomorphic part. In this way every harmonic weak Siegel Maaß form gives rise to a Siegel mock modular form.
We show that for primes $N, p \geq 5$ with $N \equiv -1 \bmod p$, the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$ is divisible by $p$. Our methods are via congruences between Eisenstein series and cusp forms. In particular, we show that when $N \equiv -1 \bmod p$, there is always a cusp form of weight $2$ and level $Γ_0(N^2)$ whose $\ell$-th Fourier coefficient is congruent to $\ell + 1$ modulo a prime above $p$, for all primes $\ell$. We use the Galois representation of such a cusp form to explicitly construct an unramified degree $p$ extension of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$.
Cheng constructed product expansions from twists of elliptic genera of symmetric powers of K3 surfaces that are related to M_24 moonshine. We study which of them are Siegel modular forms. If the predicted level is non-composite, they are modular, and their powers can be represented as products of rescaled Borcherds products.
Sturm obtained the bounds for the number of the first Fourier coefficients of elliptic modular form $f$ to determine vanishing of $f$ modulo a prime $p$. In this paper, we study analogues of Sturm's bound for Siegel modular forms of genus 2. We show the resulting bound is sharp. As an application, we study congruences involving Atkin's $U(p)$-operator for the Fourier coefficients of Siegel mdoular forms of genus 2.
Although links between values of finite field hypergeometric functions and eigenvalues of elliptic modular forms are well known, we establish in this paper that there are also connections to eigenvalues of Siegel modular forms of higher degree. Specifically, we relate the eigenvalue of the Hecke operator of index $p$ of a Siegel eigenform of degree 2 and level 8 to a special value of a ${}_4F_3$-hypergeometric function.
We continue our study of Yoshida's lifting, which associates to a pair of automorphic forms on the adelic multiplicative group of a quaternion algebra a Siegel modular form of degree 2. We consider here the case that the automorphic forms on the quaternion algebra correspond to modular forms of arbitrary even weights and square free levels; in particular we obtain a construction of Siegel modular forms of weight 3 attached to a pair of elliptic modular forms of weights 2 and 4.
The modular transformation behavior of theta series for indefinite quadratic forms is well understood in the case of elliptic modular forms due to Vignéras, who deduced that solving a differential equation of second order serves as a criterion for modularity. In this paper, we will give a generalization of this result to Siegel theta series.
Suppose that p > 5 is a rational prime. Starting from a well-known p-adic analytic family of ordinary elliptic cusp forms of level p due to Hida, we construct a certain p-adic analytic family of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms of arbitrary even genus and of level p associated with Hida's p-adic analytic family via the Duke-Imamoglu lifting provided by Ikeda. Moreover, we also give a similar results for the Siegel Eisenstein series of even genus with trivial Nebentypus.

We prove multiplicative relations between certain Fourier coefficients of degree 2 Siegel eigenforms. These relations are analogous to those for elliptic eigenforms. We also provide two sets of formulas for the eigenvalues of degree 2 Siegel eigenforms. The first evaluates the eigenvalues in terms of the form's Fourier coefficients, in the case $a(I) \neq 0$. The second expresses the eigenvalues of index $p$ and $p^2$, for $p$ prime, solely in terms of $p$ and $k$, the weight of the form, in the case $a(0)\neq 0$. From this latter case, we give simple expressions for the eigenvalues associated…

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote a finite field of characteristic $p \geq 5$ and let $d = q+1$. Let $E_d$ denote the elliptic curve over the function field $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}(t)$ defined by the equation $y^2 + xy - t^d y = x^3$. Its rank is $q$ when $q \equiv 1 \bmod 3$ and its rank is $q-2$ when $q \equiv 2 \bmod 3$. We describe an explicit method for producing points on this elliptic curve. In case $q \not\equiv 11 \bmod 12$, our method produces points which generate a full-rank subgroup. Our strategy for producing rational points on $E_d$ makes use of a dominant map from the degree $d$ Fermat surfa…
The object of this article is to construct certain classes of arithmetically significant, holomorphic Siegel cusp forms F of genus 2, which are neither of Saito-Kurokawa type, in which case the degree 4 spinor L-function L(s, F) is divisible by an abelian L-function, nor of Yoshida type, in which case L(s,F) is a product of L-series of a pair of elliptic cusp forms. Two key examples are the forms F defined by the symmetric cube of a non-CM elliptic curve E over the rationals, and those defined by anticyclotomic twists (of even non-zero weight) of the base change of such an E to an imaginary qu…
We derive an explicit upper bound for the number of systems of Hecke eigenvalues coming from Siegel modular forms (mod p) of dimension g and level N relatively prime to p. In the special case of elliptic modular forms (g=1), our result agrees with recent work of G. Herrick.
Let $\ell$ be a prime, $k$ a finitely generated field of characteristic different from $\ell$, and $X$ a smooth geometrically connected curve over $k$. Say a semisimple representation of $π_1^{\mathrm{et}}(X_{\bar k})$ is arithmetic if it extends to a finite index subgroup of $π_1^{\mathrm{et}}(X)$. We show that there exists an effective constant $N=N(X,\ell)$ such that any semisimple arithmetic representation of $π_1^{\mathrm{et}}(X_{\bar k})$ into $\mathrm{GL}_n(\bar{\mathbb{Z}_\ell})$, which is trivial mod $\ell^N$, is in fact trivial. This extends a previous result of the second author fro…
Given an abelian algebraic group $A$ over a global field $F$, $α\in A(F)$, and a prime $\ell$, the set of all preimages of $α$ under some iterate of $[\ell]$ generates an extension of $F$ that contains all $\ell$-power torsion points as well as a Kummer-type extension. We analyze the Galois group of this extension, and for several classes of $A$ we give a simple characterization of when the Galois group is as large as possible up to constraints imposed by the endomorphism ring or the Weil pairing. This Galois group encodes information about the density of primes $\p$ in the ring of integers of…
We undertake a detailed study of the lowest weight modules for the Hermitian symmetric pair (G,K), where G=Sp_4(R) and K is its maximal compact subgroup. In particular, we determine K-types and composition series, and write down explicit differential operators that navigate all the highest weight vectors of such a module starting from the unique lowest-weight vector. By rewriting these operators in classical language, we show that the automorphic forms on G that correspond to the highest weight vectors are exactly those that arise from nearly holomorphic vector-valued Siegel modular forms of d…
We attempt to generalize a congruence property of elliptic modular forms proved by Sturm to that of Haupttypus of Siegel modular forms of degree 2 with level. Namely, we give an explicit bound of Fourier coefficients required to determine the congruence of modular forms. We give the analog of Sturm's theorem for Jacobi forms, which is required in the proof. In the case that Nebentypus of Siegel modular forms with prime level, in order to prove the congruence between two modular forms, we show that it suffices to check the congruence of the finitely many Fourier coefficients. Finally, we give t…
Let $F$ be a vector-valued real analytic Siegel cusp eigenform of weight $(2,1)$ with the eigenvalues $-\frac 5{12}$ and 0 for the two generators of the center of the algebra consisting of all $Sp_4(\R)$-invariant differential operators on the Siegel upper half plane of degree 2. Under the assumptions (1) the validity of the transfer of automorphic representations of $GSp_4$ to $GL_4$; (2) the existence of mod $\ell$ Galois representation attached to $F$ and its lift to characteristic zero; (3) rationality of the space consisting of any such $F$; and (4) the integrality of Hecke polynomials of…
In this paper, we discuss the theory of the Siegel modular variety in the aspects of arithmetic and geometry. This article covers the theory of Siegel modular forms, the Hecke theory, a lifting of elliptic cusp forms, geometric properties of the Siegel modular variety, (hypothetical) motives attached to Siegel modular forms and a cohomology of the Siegel modular variety.
The Thue-Siegel method is used to obtain an upper bound for the number of primitive integral solutions to a family of quartic Thue's inequalities. This will provide an upper bound for the number of integer points on a family of elliptic curves with j-invariant equal to 1728.
Some generalizations of the Maass relation for Siegel modular forms of higher degrees have been obtained by several authors. In the present article we first give a new generalization of the Maass relation for Siegel-Eisenstein series of arbitrary degrees. Furthermore, we show that the Duke-Imamoglu-Ibukiyama-Ikeda lifts satisfy this generalized Maass relation with some modifications. As an application of the generalized Maass relation in the present article we give a new proof of the Miyawaki-Ikeda lifts of two elliptic modular forms. Namely, we compute the standard L-function of the Miyawaki-…
We derive an explicit zero-free region for symmetric square L-functions of elliptic curves, and use this to derive an explicit lower bound for the modular degree of rational elliptic curves. The techniques are similar to those used in the classical derivation of zero-free regions for Dirichlet L-functions, but here, due to the work of Goldfield-Hoffstein-Lieman, we know that there are no Siegel zeros, which leads to a strengthened result.
We define graded hyper-algebras of vector-valued Siegel modular forms, which allow us to study tensor products of the latter. We also define vector-valued Hecke operators for Siegel modular forms at all places of ${\mathbb Q}$, acting on these hyper-algebras. These definitions bridge the classical and representation theoretic approach to Siegel modular forms. Combining both the product structure and the action of Hecke operators, we prove in the case of elliptic modular forms that all cusp forms of sufficiently large weight can be obtained from products involving only two fixed Eisenstein seri…
In this note we combine the advantages of the methods of Siegel-Baker-Coates and of Lang-Zagier for the computation of S-integral points on elliptic curves in Weierstrass normal form over the rationals. In this way we are able to overcome the absence of an explicit lower bound for linear forms in q-adic elliptic logarithms. We present an efficient algorithm for determining all S-integral points on such curves.
Elliptic curves arise in many important areas of modern number theory. One way to study them is take local data, the number of solutions modulo $p$, and create an $L$-function. The behavior of this global object is related to two of the seven Clay Millennial Problems: the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture and the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. We study one-parameter families over $\mathbb{Q}(T)$, which are of the form $y^2=x^3+A(T)x+B(T)$, with non-constant $j$-invariant. We define the r-th moment of an elliptic curve to be $A_{r,E}(p) := \frac1{p} \sum_{t \bmod p} a_t(p)^r$, where $a_t(p)…
It is proved that the theta series of an even lattice whose level is a power of a prime $\ell$ is congruent modulo $\ell$ to an elliptic modular form of level~1. The proof uses arithmetic and algebraic properties of lattices rather than methods from the theory of modular forms. The methods presented here may therefore be especially pleasing to those working in the theory of quadratic forms, and they admit generalizations to more general types of theta series as they occur e.g. in the theory of Siegel or Hilbert modular forms.
In a letter to Tate, Serre proves that the systems of Hecke eigenvalues given by modular forms (mod p) are the same as the ones given by locally constant functions on an adelic double coset space constructed from the endomorphism algebra of a supersingular elliptic curve. We generalize this result to Siegel modular forms (mod p), proving that the systems of Hecke eigenvalues obtained from them are the same as the ones given by algebraic modular forms (mod p) on a quaternionic unitary group, as defined by Gross. The correspondence is obtained by restricting to the superspecial locus of the modu…
It is a classical fact that the elliptic modular functions satisfies an algebraic differential equation of order 3, and none of lower order. We show how this generalizes to Siegel modular functions of arbitrary degree. The key idea is that the partial differential equations they satisfy are governed by Gauss--Manin connections, whose monodromy groups are well-known. Modular theta functions provide a concrete interpretation of our result, and we study their differential properties in detail in the case of degree 2.

Consider a real matrix $Θ$ consisting of rows $(θ_{i,1},\ldots,θ_{i,n})$, for $1\leq i\leq m$. The problem of making the system linear forms $x_{1}θ_{i,1}+\cdots+x_{n}θ_{i,n}-y_{i}$ for integers $x_{j},y_{i}$ small naturally induces an ordinary and a uniform exponent of approximation, denoted by $w(Θ)$ and $\widehat{w}(Θ)$ respectively. For $m=1$, a sharp lower bound for the ratio $w(Θ)/\widehat{w}(Θ)$ was recently established by Marnat and Moshchevitin. We give a short, new proof of this result upon a hypothesis on the best approximation integer vectors associated to $Θ$. Our conditional resu…
We study one-parameter families of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}(T)$, which are of the form $y^2=x^3+A(T)x+B(T)$, with non-constant $j$-invariant. We define the $r$\textsuperscript{th} moment of an elliptic curve to be $A_{r,E}(p) := \frac1{p} \sum_{t \bmod p} a_t(p)^r$, where $a_t(p)$ is $p$ minus the number of solutions to $y^2 = x^3 + A(t)x + B(t) \bmod p$. Rosen and Silverman showed biases in the first moment equal the rank of the Mordell-Weil group of rational solutions. Michel proved that $pA_{2,E}(p)=p^2+O(p^{3/2})$. Based on several special families where computations can be done in…
We consider lifts from two elliptic modular forms to Siegel modular forms of odd degrees which are special cases of Miyawaki-Ikeda lifts. Assuming non-vanishing of these Miyawaki-Ikeda lifts, we show that the spinor L-functions of these Miyawaki-Ikeda lifts are products of some kind of symmetric power L-functions determined by original two elliptic modular forms.
In a letter to Tate (published in Israel J. Math. in 1996), J.-P. Serre proves that the systems of Hecke eigenvalues given by modular forms (mod p) are the same as the ones given by locally constant functions on an adelic double coset space constructed from the endomorphism algebra of a supersingular elliptic curve. We generalize this result to Siegel modular forms, proving that the systems of Hecke eigenvalues given by Siegel modular forms (mod p) are the same as the ones given by algebraic modular forms (mod p) on a quaternionic unitary group, as defined by Gross in Israel J. Math. in 1999. …
We construct the minimal compactification of some modular Siegel varieties at their bad reduction places. These varieties parametrize principally polarized abelian schemes endowed with a parahoric level structure at a prime number $p$, and with an auxiliary level structure ; such varieties have bad reduction at $p$. We also sketch the arithmetic theory of the associated Siegel modular forms. ----- Nous construisons la compactification minimale de certaines varietes modulaires de Siegel en leurs places de mauvaise reduction. Let $S_k(Γ^{\mathrm{para}}(N))$ be the space of Siegel paramodular forms of level $N$ and weight $k$. Let $p\nmid N$ and let $χ$ be a nontrivial quadratic Dirichlet character mod $p$. Based on our previous work, we define a linear twisting map $\mathcal{T}_χ:S_k(Γ^{\mathrm{para}}(N))\rightarrow S_k(Γ^{\mathrm{para}}(Np^4))$. We calculate an explicit expression for this twist and give the commutation relations of this map with the Hecke operators and Atkin-Lehner involution for primes $\ell\neq p$.
For an arbitrary even genus $2n$ we show that the subspace of Siegel cusp forms of degree $2n$ generated by Ikeda lifts of elliptic cusp forms can be characterized by certain linear relations among Fourier coefficients. This generatizes the work of Kohnen and Kojima.
Miyawaki type lifts are kinds of Langlands functorial lifts and a special case was first conjectured by Miyawaki and proved by Ikeda for Siegel cusp forms. Since then, such a lift for Hermitian modular forms was constructed by Atobe and Kojima , and for half-integral weight Siegel cusp forms by Hayashida, and we constructed Miyawaki type lift for ${\rm GSpin}(2,10)$. Recently Ikeda and Yamana generalized Ikeda type construction and accordingly did Miyawaki type lift for Hilbert cusp forms in a remarkable way. In all these works, a construction of Miyawaki type lift takes two steps as follows: …
Let $Z$ be the quotient of the Siegel modular threefold $\mathcal{A}^{\rm sa}(2,4,8)$ which has been studied by van Geemen and Nygaard. They gave an implication that some 6-tuple $F_Z$ of theta constants which is in turn known to be a Klingen type Eisenstein series of weight 3 should be related to a holomorphic differential $(2,0)$-form on $Z$. The variety $Z$ is birationally equivalent to the tangent cone of Fermat quartic surface in the title. In this paper we first compute the L-function of two smooth resolutions of $Z$. One of these, denoted by $W$, is a kind of Igusa compactification such…
