The absence of interesting harmonic sections for the Sasaki and Cheeger-Gromoll metrics has led to the consideration of alternatives, for example in the form of a two-parameter family of natural metrics shown to relax existence conditions for harmonicity. This article investigates harmonic Killing vector fields, proves their non-existence on S^2, obtains rigidity results for harmonic gradient vector fields on the two-sphere, classifies spherical quadratic gradient fields in all dimensions and determines the tension field, concluding with the discovery of a family of metrics making Hopf vector fields harmonic maps on S^{2n+1}.
In a previous paper, we showed that any Jacobi field along a harmonic map from the 2-sphere to the complex projective plane is integrable (i.e., is tangent to a smooth variation through harmonic maps). In this paper, in contrast, we show that there are (non-full) harmonic maps from the 2-sphere to the 3-sphere and 4-sphere which have non-integrable Jacobi fields. This is particularly surprising in the case of the 3-sphere where the space of harmonic maps of any degree is a smooth manifold, each map having image in a totally geodesic 2-sphere.
The spaces of harmonic maps of the projective plane to the four-dimensional sphere are investigated in this paper by means of twistor lifts. It is shown that such spaces are empty in case of even harmonic degree. In case of harmonic degree less than 6 it was shown that such spaces are path-connected and an explicit parameterization of the canonical representatives was found. In addition, the last section summarizes known results for harmonic maps of the two-dimensional sphere to the four-dimensional sphere of harmonic degree less than 6.
We study the growth of harmonic functions on complete Riemann-ian manifolds where the extrinsic diameter of geodesic spheres is sublinear. It is an generalization of a result of A. Kazue. We also get a Cheng and Yau estimates for the gradient of harmonic functions.
We study the existence or not of harmonic diffeomorphisms between certain domains in the Euclidean 2-sphere. In particular, we show harmonic diffeomorphisms from circular domains in the complex plane onto finitely punctured spheres, with at least two punctures. This result follows from a general existence theorem for maximal graphs in the Lorentzian product $M\times\mathbb{R}_1,$ where $M$ is an arbitrary $n$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold, $n\geq 2.$ In contrast, we show that there is no harmonic diffeomorphism from the unit complex disc onto the once punctured sphere and no harmonic…
J. Eells and L. Lemaire introduced k-harmonic maps, and Wang Shaobo showed the first variational formula. When, k=2, it is called biharmonic maps (2-harmonic maps). There have been extensive studies in the area. In this paper, We study k-harmonic immersion into a sphere, and get the rerationship between radious and "k" of k-harmonic. And we also consider k-harmonic submersion, and genelarize Oniciuc's results. Futhermore we construct non harmonic k-harmonic by Hopf map.
Making use of Murakami's classification of outer involutions in a Lie algebra and following the Morse-theoretic approach to harmonic two-spheres in Lie groups introduced by Burstall and Guest, we obtain a new classification of harmonic two-spheres in outer symmetric spaces and a Weierstrass-type representation for such maps. Several examples of harmonic maps into classical outer symmetric spaces are given in terms of meromorphic functions on $S^2$.
We show that under some non-degeneracy assumption the only submersive harmonic morphism on a conformally flat $3-$sphere is the Hopf fibration. The proof involves an appropriate use the Chern-Simons functional.
Polyharmonic, or $r$-harmonic, maps are a natural generalization of harmonic maps whose study was proposed by Eells-Lemaire in 1983. The main aim of this paper is to construct new examples of proper $r$-harmonic immersions into spheres. In particular, we shall prove that the canonical inclusion $i: S^{n-1}(R)\to S^n$ is a proper $r$-harmonic submanifold of $S^n$ if and only if the radius $R$ is equal to $1/ \sqrt{r}$. We shall also prove the existence of proper $r$-harmonic generalized Clifford's tori into the sphere.
It is proved some results about existence and non existence of unit normal sections of submanifolds of the Euclidean space and sphere which associated Gauss maps are harmonic. Some applications to CMC hypersurfaces of the sphere and isoparametric submanifolds are obtained too.
We prove that a necessary condition for the existence of the remaining problem in the harmonic Hopf construction is also sufficient. We also give some topological applications based on our result.
We obtain the explicit representation of Legendre surfaces in the unit $5$-sphere with harmonic mean curvature vector field, under the condition that the mean curvature function is constant along a certain special direction.
We define two transforms between non-conformal harmonic maps from a surface into the 3-sphere. With these transforms one can construct, from one such harmonic map, a sequence of harmonic maps. We show that there is a correspondence between non-conformal harmonic maps into the 3-sphere, $H$-surfaces in Euclidean 3-space and almost complex surfaces in the nearly Kähler manifold $S^3\times S^3$. As a consequence we can construct sequences of $H$-surfaces and almost complex surfaces.
We show that the set of harmonic maps from the 2-dimensional stratified spheres with uniformly bounded energies contains only finitely many homotopy classes. We apply this result to construct infinitely many harmonic map flows and mean curvature flows of 2-sphere in the connected sum of two closed 3-dimensional manifolds $M_1\not=S^3$ and $M_2\not=S^3,\R¶^3$, which must develop finite time singularity.
In [5], together with J. C. Wood, the authors gave a completely explicit formula for all harmonic maps from $2$-spheres to the unitary group $U(n)$ in terms of freely chosen meromorphic functions on $S^2$. The simplest harmonic maps are the isotropic ones. Using Morse theory Burstall and Guest [1] showed that the harmonic maps come in clusters labeled by the isotropic ones. In this work, using the formula for harmonic maps aforementioned, we describe explicitly this procedure, showing how all harmonic maps can be built from the isotropic ones. [1] F.~E.\ Burstall and M.~A.\ Guest, \textit{Harm…
This paper aims to provide a description of totally isotropic Willmore two-spheres and their adjoint transforms. We first recall the isotropic harmonic maps which are introduced by Hélein, Xia-Shen and Ma for the study of Willmore surfaces. Then we derive a description of the normalized potential (some Lie algebra valued meromorphic 1-forms) of totally isotropic Willmore two-spheres in terms of the isotropic harmonic maps. In particular, the corresponding isotropic harmonic maps are of finite uniton type. The proof also contains a concrete way to construct examples of totally isotropic Willmor…
We give a complete classification of Riemannian and Lorentzian surfaces of arbitrary codimension in a pseudo-sphere whose pseudo-spherical Gauss maps are of 1-type or, in particular, harmonic. In some cases a concrete global classification is obtained, while in other cases the solutions are described by an explicit system of partial differential equations.
Nonexistence of quasi-harmonic spheres is necessary for long time existence and convergence of harmonic map heat flows. Let $(N,h)$ be a complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds. Assume the universal covering of $(N,h)$ admits a nonnegative strictly convex function with polynomial growth. Then there is no quasi-harmonic spheres $u:\mathbb{R}^n\ra N$ such that $$\lim_{r\ra\infty}r^ne^{-\f{r^2}{4}}\int_{|x|\leq r}e^{-\f{|x|^2}{4}}|\nabla u|^2dx=0.$$ This generalizes a result of the first named author and X. Zhu (Calc. Var., 2009). Our method is essentially the Moser iteration and thus very simpl…
This article studies the harmonicity of vector fields on Riemannian manifolds, viewed as maps into the tangent bundle equipped with a family of Riemannian metrics. Geometric and topological rigidity conditions are obtained, especially for surfaces and vector fields of constant norm, and existence is proved on two-tori. Classifications are given for conformal, quadratic and Killing vector fields on spheres. Finally, the class of metric considered on the tangent bundle is enlarged, permitting new vector fields to become harmonic.
Let $S$ be a surface with a metric $d$ satisfying an upper curvature bound in the sense of Alexandrov (i.e. via triangle comparison). We show that an almost conformal harmonic map from a surface into $(S,d)$ is a branched covering. As a consequence, if $(S,d)$ is homeomorphically equivalent to the 2-sphere $\mathbb S^2$, then it is conformally equivalent to $\mathbb S^2$.
We present an explicit description of all harmonic maps of finite uniton number from a Riemann surface into a complex Grassmannian. Namely, starting from a constant map $Q$ and a collection of meromorphic functions and their derivatives, we show how to algebraically construct all harmonic maps from the two-sphere into a given Grassmannian $G_p(\mathbb C^n)$. In this setting the uniton number depends on $Q$ and $p$ and we obtain a sharp estimate for it.
For an arbitrary Dirac-harmonic map $(ϕ,ψ)$ between compact oriented Riemannian surfaces, we shall study the zeros of $|ψ|$. With the aid of Bochner-type formulas, we explore the relationship between the order of the zeros of $|ψ|$ and the genus of $M$ and $N$. On the basis, we could clarify all of nontrivial Dirac-harmonic maps from $S^2$ to $S^2$.
We consider the energy functional on the space of sections of a sphere bundle over a Riemannian manifold (M, <,>) equipped with the Sasaki metric and we discuss the characterising condition for critical points. Likewise, we provide a useful method for computing the tension field in some particular situations. Such a method is shown to be adequate for many tensor fields defined on manifolds M equipped with a G-structure compatible with <,>. This leads to the construction of a lot of new examples of differential forms which are harmonic sections or determine a harmonic map from (M,<,>) into its …
In this paper we study the properties of quasi-harmonic spheres from $\R^m, m>2$. We show that if the universal covering $\tilde N$ of $N$ admits a nonnegative strictly convex function $ρ$ with the exponential growth condition $ρ(y)\leq C\exp\left(\frac14\tilde d(y)^{2/m}\right)$ where $\tilde d(y)$ is the distance function on $\tilde N$, then $N$ does not admit a quasi-harmonic sphere, which generalize Li-Zhu's result \cite{Li2010non}. We also show that if $u$ is a quasi-harmonic sphere, then the property that $u$ is of finite energy ($\int_{\R^m}e(u)e^{-\abs{x}^2/4}\dif x<\infty$) is equival…
We relate the existence problem of harmonic maps into $S^2$ to the convex geometry of $S^2$. On one hand, this allows us to construct new examples of harmonic maps of degree 0 from compact surfaces of arbitrary genus into $S^2$. On the other hand, we produce new example of regions that do not contain closed geodesics (that is, harmonic maps from $S^1$) but do contain images of harmonic maps from other domains. These regions can therefore not support a strictly convex function. Our construction builds upon an example of W. Kendall, and uses M. Struwe's heat flow approach for the existence of ha…
We show that any Jacobi field along a harmonic map from the 2-sphere to the complex projective plane is integrable (i.e., is tangent to a smooth variation through harmonic maps). This provides one of the few known answers to this problem of integrability, which was raised in different contexts of geometry and analysis. It implies that the Jacobi fields form the tangent bundle to each component of the manifold of harmonic maps from $S^2$ to ${\bf C}P^2$ thus giving the nullity of any such harmonic map; it also has bearing on the behaviour of weakly harmonic $E$-minimizing maps from a 3-manifold…
In this note, we show that some F-harmonic maps into spheres are global maxima of the variations of their energy functional on the conformal group of the sphere. Our result extends partially those obtained in [15] and [17] for harmonic and p-harmonic maps.
We give the twistor description of harmonic maps of the Riemann sphere into the Hilbert-Schmidt Grassmannian. The study of such maps is motivated by the harmonic spheres conjecture formulated in the beginning of this paper.
We study harmonic sections of a Riemannian vector bundle whose total space is equipped with a 2-parameter family of metrics which includes both the Sasaki and Cheeger-Gromoll metrics. This enables the theory of harmonic unit sections to be extended to bundles with non-zero Euler class.
J.Eells and L. Lemaire introduced k-harmonic maps, and T. Ichiyama, J. Inoguchi and H.Urakawa showed the first variation formula. In this paper, we describe the ordinary differential equations of $3$-harmonic curves into a Riemannian manifold with constant sectional curvature, and show biharmonic curve is k-harmonic curve $(k\geq 2)$.
We show that the moduli space of positive Ricci curvature metrics on all the total spaces of $S^7$-bundles over $S^8$ which are rational homology spheres has infinitely many path components. Furthermore, we carry out the diffeomorphism classification of quotients of Milnor spheres by a certain involution and show that the moduli space of metrics of non-negative sectional on them has infinitely many path components. Finally, a diffeomorphism finiteness result is obtained on quotients of Shimada spheres by the same type of involution and we show that for the types that can be expressed by an inf…
We construct large families of harmonic morphisms which are holomorphic with respect to Hermitian structures by finding heierarchies of Weierstrass-type representations. This enables us to find new examples of complex-valued harmonic morphisms from Euclidean spaces and spheres.
The paper provides a different proof of the result of Brendle-Schoen on the differential sphere theorem. It is shown directly that the invariant cone of curvature operators with positive (or non-negative) complex sectional curvature is preserved by the Ricci flow. This implies, by a result of Böhm-Wilking, that the normalized Ricci flow deforms such a metric to a metric of constant positive curvature. Using earlier work of Yau and Zheng it can be shown that a metric with strictly (pointwise) 1/4-pinched sectional curvature has positive complex sectional curvature. This gives a direct proof of …
Uhlenbeck introduced an invariant, the (minimal) uniton number, of harmonic 2-spheres in a Lie group G and proved that when G=SU(n) the uniton number cannot exceed n-1. In this paper, using new methods inspired by Morse Theory, we explain this result and extend it to an arbitrary compact group G. The same methods also yield Weierstrass formulae for these harmonic maps and simple proofs of most of the known classification theorems for harmonic 2-spheres in symmetric spaces.
J. Eells and L. Lemaire introduced k-harmonic maps, and Wang Shaobo showed the first variational formula. When, k=2, it is called biharmonic maps (2-harmonic maps). There have been extensive studies in the area. In this paper, we consider the relationship between biharmonic maps and k-harmonic maps, and show non-existence theorem of 3-harmonic maps. We also give the definition of k-harmonic submanifolds of Euclidean spaces, and study k-harmonic curve in Euclidean spaces. Futhermore, we give a conjecture for k-harmonic submanifolds of Euclidean spaces.
In this paper we deal with the global properties of Willmore surfaces in spheres via the harmonic conformal Gauss map using loop groups. We first derive a global description of those harmonic maps which can be realized as conformal Gauss maps of some Willmore surfaces (Theorem 3.4, Theorem 3.11 and Theorem 3.18). Then we introduce the DPW procedure for these harmonic maps, and state appropriate versions of the Iwasawa decomposition and the Birkhoff decomposition Theorems. In particular, we show how the harmonic maps associated with Willmore surfaces can be constructed in terms of loop groups. …
The variational theory of higher-power energy is developed for mappings between Riemannian manifolds, and more generally sections of submersions of Riemannian manifolds, and applied to sections of Riemannian vector bundles and their sphere subbundles. A complete classification is then given for left-invariant vector fields on 3-dimensional unimodular Lie groups equipped with an arbitrary left-invariant Riemannian metric.
Biharmonic maps are generalizations of harmonic maps. A well-known result of Eells and Wood on harmonic maps between surfaces shows that there exists no harmonic map from a torus into a sphere (whatever the metrics chosen) in the homotopy class of maps of Brower degree $\pm 1$. It would be interesting to know if there exists any biharmonic map in that homotopy class of maps. In this paper, we obtain some classifications on biharmonic maps from a torus into a sphere, where the torus is provided with a flat or a class of non-flat metrics whilst the sphere is provided with the standard metric. Ou…
Suppose that $S^n$ is given a generic Riemannian metric with sectional curvatures which satisfy a suitable pinching condition formulated in terms of complex sectional curvatures. This pinching condition is satisfied by manifolds whose real sectional curvatures $K_r(σ)$ satisfy $$1/2 < K_r(σ) \leq 1.$$ Then the number of minimal two spheres of Morse index $λ$, for $n-2 \leq λ\leq 2n-5$, is at least $p_{3}(λ-n+2)$, where $p_{3}(k)$ is the number of $k$-cells in the Schubert cell decomposition for $G_3({\mathbb R}^{n+1})$.
We classify all harmonic maps with finite uniton number from a Riemann surface into an arbitrary compact simple Lie group $G$, whether $G$ has trivial centre or not, in terms of certain pieces of the Bruhat decomposition of the group $Ω_\mathrm{alg}{G}$ of algebraic loops in $G$ and corresponding canonical elements. This will allow us to give estimations for the minimal uniton number of the corresponding harmonic maps with respect to different representations and to make more explicit the relation between previous work by different authors on harmonic two-spheres in classical compact Lie group…
In this paper we give an explicit parametrisation of the moduli space of equivariant harmonic maps from a 2-torus to the 3-sphere. As Hitchin proved, a harmonic map of a 2-torus is described by its spectral data, which consists of a hyperelliptic curve together with a pair of differentials and a line bundle. The space of spectral data is naturally a fibre bundle over the space of spectral curves. For homogeneous tori the space of spectral curves is a disc and the bundle is trivial. For tori with a one-dimensional invariance group, we enumerate the path connected components of the space of spec…
An almost contact metric structure is parametrized by a section of an associated homogeneous fibre bundle, and conditions for this to be a harmonic section, and a harmonic map, are studied. These involve the characteristic vector field, and the almost complex structure in the contact subbundle. Several examples are given where the harmonic section equations reduce to those for the characteristic field to be a harmonic section of the unit tangent bundle. These include trans-Sasakian structures, and certain nearly cosymplectic structures. On the other hand, we obtain examples where the character…
In this manuscript we study rotationally $p$-harmonic maps between spheres. We prove that for $p\in\mathbb{N}$ given, there exist infinitely many $p$-harmonic self-maps of $\mathbb{S}^m$ for each $m\in\mathbb{N}$ with $p<m< 2+p+2\sqrt{p}$. In the case of the identity map of $\mathbb{S}^m$ we explicitly determine the spectrum of the corresponding Jacobi operator and show that for $p>m$, the identity map of $\mathbb{S}^m$ is stable when interpreted as a $p$-harmonic self-map of $\mathbb{S}^m$.
Applying the DPW version of the theory developed by Burstall and Guest for harmonic maps of finite uniton type, we derive a coarse classification of Willmore two-spheres in $S^{n+2}$ in terms of the normalized potential of their (harmonic) conformal Gauss maps. Moreover, for the case of $S^6$, some geometric properties of the corresponding Willmore two-spheres are discussed. The classical classification of Willmore two-spheres in $S^4$ are also derived as a corollary.
We show the regularity of, and derive a-priori estimates for (weakly) harmonic maps from a Riemannian manifold into a Euclidean sphere under the assumption that the image avoids some neighborhood of a half-equator. The proofs combine constructions of strictly convex functions and the regularity theory of quasi-linear elliptic systems. We apply these results to the spherical and Euclidean Bernstein problems for minimal hypersurfaces, obtaining new conditions under which compact minimal hypersurfaces in spheres or complete minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces are trivial.
In this paper, we show that every harmonic map from a compact Kähler manifold with uniformly RC-positive curvature to a Riemannian manifold with non-positive complex sectional curvature is constant. In particular, there is no non-constant harmonic map from a compact Kähler manifold with positive holomorphic sectional curvature to a Riemannian manifold with non-positive complex sectional curvature.
