We study harmonic sections of a Riemannian vector bundle whose total space is equipped with a 2-parameter family of metrics which includes both the Sasaki and Cheeger-Gromoll metrics. This enables the theory of harmonic unit sections to be extended to bundles with non-zero Euler class.
We investigate conformality of the differential of a mapping between Riemannian manifolds if the tangent bundles are equipped with a generalized metric of Cheeger-Gromoll type.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate applications the covariant derivatives, killing vector fields and to calculate the components of the curvature tensor CGR of the Cheeger-Gromoll metric with respect to adapted frames in a the Riemannian manifold to its tangent bundle T(Mn)
We investigate horizontal conformality of a differential of a map between Riemannian manifolds where the tangent bundles are equipped with Cheeger--Gromoll type metrics. As a corollary, we characterize the differential of a map as a harmonic morphism.
The main purpose of the present paper is to construct Riemannian almost product structures on the $(1,1)-$tensor bundle equipped with Cheeger-Gromoll type metric over a Riemannian manifold and present some results concerning with these structures.
We construct a metrical framed structure on the tensor bundle of a Riemannian manifold equipped with a Cheeger-Gromoll type metric and by restricting this structure to the tensor sphere bundle, we obtain an almost metrical paracontact structure on the tensor sphere bundle. Moreover, we show that the tensor sphere bundles endowed with the induced metric are never space forms.
In this paper we study a Riemanian metric on the tangent bundle $T(M)$ of a Riemannian manifold $M$ which generalizes the Cheeger Gromoll metric and a compatible almost complex structure which together with the metric confers to $T(M)$ a structure of locally conformal almost Kählerian manifold. We found conditions under which $T(M)$ is almost Kählerian, locally conformal Kählerian or Kählerian or when $T(M)$ has constant sectional curvature or constant scalar curvature.
Let $(M,g)$ be an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold and $T^{*}M$ be its cotangent bundle equipped with a Riemannian metric of Cheeger Gromoll type which rescale the horizontal part by a nonzero differentiable function. The main purpose of the present paper is to discuss curvature properties of $T^{*}M$ and construct almost paracomplex Norden structures on $T^{*}M$. We investigate conditions for these structures to be para-Kähler (paraholomorphic) and quasi-Kähler. Also, some properties of almost paracomplex Norden structures in context of almost product Riemannian manifolds are presented.
We investigate the geometry of a normal bundle equipped with a $(p,q)$-metric, i.e., Riemannian metric of Cheeger-Gromoll type, to the submanifold of a Riemannian manifold. We derive all natural object as the Levi-Civita connection, curvature tensor, sectional and scalar curvature. We prove that under some natural conditions the sectional curvature of this bundle may be bounded from below by given arbitrary large positive constant. Next we investigate $(p,q)$-metrics from the complex geometry point of view. We show when the normal bundle can by equipped with a structure of almost Hermitian, al…
In this paper, we prove two generalized versions of the Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem via the non-negativity of the Bakry-Émery Ricci curavture on complete Riemannian manifolds.
We study the geometry of the tangent bundle equipped with a two-parameter family of Riemannian metrics. After deriving the expression of the Levi-Civita connection, we compute the Riemann curvature tensor and the sectional, Ricci and scalar curvatures. Specializing to the case of space forms, we characterise the metrics giving positive sectional curvature and show that one can always find parameters ensuring positive scalar curvature on the tangent space. Under some curvature conditions, this extends to general base manifolds.
We show, using two different approaches, that there exists a family of Riemannian metrics on the tangent bundle of a two-sphere, which induces metrics of constant curvature on its unit tangent bundle. In other words, given such a metric on the tangent bundle of a two-sphere, the Hopf map is identified with a Riemannian submersion from the universal covering space of the unit tangent bundle onto the two-sphere. A hyperbolic counterpart dealing with the tangent bundle of a hyperbolic plane is also presented.
We prove a new generalization of the Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem where we obtain a warped product splitting under the existence of a line. The curvature condition in our splitting is a curvature dimension inequality of the form $CD(0,1)$. Even though we have to allow warping in our splitting, we are able to recover topological applications. In particular, for a smooth compact Riemannian manifold admitting a density which is $CD(0,1)$, we show that the fundamental group of $M$ is the fundamental group of a compact manifold with nonnegative sectional curvature. If the space is also locally…
We study unit horizontal bundles associated with Riemannian submersions. First we investigate metric properties of an arbitrary unit horizontal bundle equipped with a Riemannian metric of the Cheeger-Gromoll type. Next we examine it from the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence theory point of view, and we state a collapse theorem for unit horizontal bundles associated with a sequence of warped Riemannian submersions.
Natural metrics (Sasaki metric, Cheeger-Gromoll metric, Kaluza-Klein metrics etc.. ) on the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold is a central topic in Riemannian geometry. Generalized Cheeger-Gromoll metrics is a family of natural metrics $h_{p,q}$ depending on two parameters with $p\in\mathbb{R}$ and $q\geq0$. This family has been introduced recently and possesses interesting geometric properties. If $p=q=0$ we recover the Sasaki metric and when $p=q=1$ we recover the classical Cheeger-Gromoll metric. A transitive Euclidean Lie algebroid is a transitive Lie algebroid with an Euclidean prod…
We prove short time existence for the Ricci flow on open manifolds of nonnegative complex sectional curvature. We do not require upper curvature bounds. By considering the doubling of convex sets contained in a Cheeger-Gromoll convex exhaustion and solving the singular initial value problem for the Ricci flow on these closed manifolds, we obtain a sequence of closed solutions of the Ricci flow with nonnegative complex sectional curvature which subconverge to a solution of the Ricci flow on the open manifold. Furthermore, we find an optimal volume growth condition which guarantees long time exi…
We construct a co-dimension $3$ completely non-holonomic sub-bundle on the Gromoll-Meyer exotic $7$ sphere based on its realization as a base space of a Sp(2)-principal bundle with the structure group Sp(1). The same method is valid for constructing a co-dimension 3 completely non-holonomic sub-bundle on the standard 7 sphere (or more general on a $4n+3$ dimensional standard sphere). In the latter case such a construction based on the Hopf bundle is well-known. Our method provides an alternated simple proof for the standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^7$.
It is conjectured that there are no Riemannian foliations on compact manifold of negative curvature by Gromoll-Walschap in \cite{DG}. In this note we give a positive answer.
Following the lines of the celebrated Riemannian result of Gromoll and Meyer, we use infinite dimensional equivariant Morse theory to establish the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct closed geodesics in a class of globally hyperbolic stationary Lorentzian manifolds.
Let $(\mathcal{M},g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $N\geq 2$. We prove the existence of a family $(Ω_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon\in (0,\varepsilon_0)}$ of self-Cheeger sets in $(\mathcal{M},g)$ . The domains $Ω_\varepsilon\subset\mathcal{M}$ are perturbations of geodesic balls of radius $\varepsilon$ centered at $p \in \mathcal{M}$, and in particular, if $p_0$ is a non-degenerate critical point of the scalar curvature of $g$, then the family $(\partial Ω_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon \in (0,\varepsilon_0)}$ constitutes a smooth foliation of a neighborhood of $p_0$.

We give a quite detailed overview on the proof of the Cheeger-Colding-Gromoll splitting theorem in the abstract framework of spaces with Riemannian Ricci curvature bounded from below.
We study the interplay between geodesics on two non-holono\-mic systems that are related by the action of a Lie group on them. After some geometric preliminaries, we use the Hamiltonian formalism to write the parametric form of geodesics. We present several geometric examples, including a non-holonomic structure on the Gromoll-Meyer exotic sphere and twistor space.
The theorem that if all geodesics of a Riemannian two-sphere are closed they are also simple closed is generalized to real Hamiltonian structures on $\mathbb{R}P^3$. For reversible Finsler $2$-spheres all of whose geodesics are closed this implies that the lengths of all geodesics coincide.
We complete a minor gap in Gromoll and Walschap classification of metric fibrations from the Euclidean space, thus completing the classification of Riemannian foliations on Euclidean spaces.
The absence of interesting harmonic sections for the Sasaki and Cheeger-Gromoll metrics has led to the consideration of alternatives, for example in the form of a two-parameter family of natural metrics shown to relax existence conditions for harmonicity. This article investigates harmonic Killing vector fields, proves their non-existence on S^2, obtains rigidity results for harmonic gradient vector fields on the two-sphere, classifies spherical quadratic gradient fields in all dimensions and determines the tension field, concluding with the discovery of a family of metrics making Hopf vector …
This paper addresses Cheeger and Gromoll's question of which vector bundles admit a complete metric of nonnegative curvature, and relates their question to the issue of which sphere bundles admit a metric of positive curvature. We show that any vector bundle which admits a metric of nonnegative curvature must admit a connection, a tensor, and a metric on the base space which together satisfy a certain differential inequality. On the other hand, a slight sharpening of this condition is sufficient for the associated sphere bundle to admit a metric of positive curvature. Our results sharpen and g…
In this paper we study the relationship of hyperbolicity and (Cheeger) isoperimetric inequality in the context of Riemannian manifolds and graphs. We characterize the hyperbolic manifolds and graphs (with bounded local geometry) verifying this isoperimetric inequality, in terms of their Gromov boundary. Furthermore, we characterize the trees with isoperimetric inequality (without any hypothesis). As an application of our results, we obtain the solvability of the Dirichlet problem at infinity for these Riemannian manifolds and graphs, and that the Martin boundary is homeomorphic to the Gromov b…
A vector field s on a Riemannian manifold M is said to be harmonic if there exists a member of a 2-parameter family of generalised Cheeger-Gromoll metrics on TM with respect to which s is a harmonic section. If M is a simply-connected non-flat space form other than the 2-sphere, examples are obtained of conformal vector fields that are harmonic. In particular, the harmonic Killing fields and conformal gradient fields are classified, a loop of non-congruent harmonic conformal fields on the hyperbolic plane constructed, and the 2-dimensional classification achieved for conformal fields. A classi…
This paper surveys aspects of the convergence and degeneration of Riemannian metrics on a given manifold M - the Cheeger-Gromov theory - and extensions thereof to Ricci curvature in place of full curvature. This theory is then applied to study a collection of different issues in mathematical aapects of General Relativity.
We discuss the behavior of $(λ_{1. p}(M))^{1/p}$ with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff topology and the variable $p$, where $λ_{1, p}(M)$ is the first positive eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$. Applications include new estimates for the first eigenvalues of the $p$-Laplacian on Riemannian manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds, and isoperimetric inequalities on Gromov-Hausdorff limit spaces. We also establish a new Lichnerowicz-Obata type theorem.
In this paper we study a Riemanian metric on the tangent bundle $T(M)$ of a Riemannian manifold $M$ which generalizes Sasaki metric and Cheeger Gromoll metric and a compatible almost complex structure which together with the metric confers to $T(M)$ a structure of locally conformal almost Kählerian manifold. This is the natural generalization of the well known almost Kählerian structure on $T(M)$. We found conditions under which $T(M)$ is almost Kählerian, locally conformal Kählerian or Kählerian or when $T(M)$ has constant sectional curvature or constant scalar curvature. Then we will restric…
Let g_t be a family of constant scalar curvature metrics on the total space of a Riemannian submersion obtained by shrinking the fibers of an original metric g, so that the submersion collapses as t approaches 0 (i.e., the total space converges to the base in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense). We prove that, under certain conditions, there are at least 3 unit volume constant scalar curvature metrics in the conformal class [g_t] for infinitely many t's accumulating at 0. This holds, e.g., for homogeneous metrics g_t obtained via Cheeger deformation of homogeneous fibrations with fibers of positive sc…
The main result of this article states that the (K;N)-cone over some metric measure space satisfies the reduced Riemannian curvature-dimension condition RCD^*(KN;N+1) if and only if the underlying space satisfies RCD^*(N-1;N). The proof uses a characterization of reduced Riemannian curvature-dimension bounds by Bochner's inequality that was established for metric measure spaces by Erbar, Kuwada and Sturm and independently by Ambrosio, Mondino and Savaré. As corollary of our result and the Cheeger-Gigli-Gromoll splitting theorem we obtain a maximal diameter theorem for metric measure spaces tha…
In this paper we study collapsing sequences M_{i}-> X of Riemannian manifolds with curvature bounded or bounded away from a controlled subset. We introduce a structure over X which in an appropriate sense is dual to the N-structure of Cheeger, Fukaya and Gromov. As opposed to the N-structure, which live over the M_{i} themselves, this structure lives over X and allows for a convenient notion of global convergence as well as the appropriate background structure for doing analysis on X. This structure is new even in the case of uniformly bounded curvature and as an application we give a generali…
The goal of the paper is to sharpen and generalise bounds involving the Cheeger's isoperimetric constant $h$ and the first eigenvalue $λ_{1}$ of the Laplacian. A celebrated lower bound of $λ_{1}$ in terms of $h$, $λ_{1}\geq h^{2}/4$, was proved by Cheeger in 1970 for smooth Riemannian manifolds. An upper bound on $λ_{1}$ in terms of $h$ was established by Buser in 1982 (with dimensional constants) and improved (to a dimension-free estimate) by Ledoux in 2004 for smooth Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below. The goal of the paper is two fold. First: we sharpen the inequalities…
We show how 'test' vector fields may be used to give lower bounds for the Cheeger constant of a Euclidean domain (or Riemannian manifold with boundary), and hence for the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on the domain. Also, we show that a continuous version of the classical Max Flow Min Cut Theorem for networks implies that Cheeger's constant may be obtained precisely from such vector fields. Finally, we apply these ideas to reprove a known lower bound for Cheeger's constant in terms of the inradius of a plane domain.
We prove a lower bound for the $k$-th Steklov eigenvalues in terms of an isoperimetric constant called the $k$-th Cheeger-Steklov constant in three different situations: finite spaces, measurable spaces, and Riemannian manifolds. These lower bounds can be considered as higher order Cheeger type inequalities for the Steklov eigenvalues. In particular it extends the Cheeger type inequality for the first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue previously studied by Escobar in 1997 and by Jammes in 2015 to higher order Steklov eigenvalues. The technique we develop to get this lower bound is based on considerin…

We use Ricci flow to obtain a local bi-Holder correspondence between Ricci limit spaces in three dimensions and smooth manifolds. This is more than a complete resolution of the three-dimensional case of the conjecture of Anderson-Cheeger-Colding-Tian, describing how Ricci limit spaces in three dimensions must be homeomorphic to manifolds, and we obtain this in the most general, locally non-collapsed case. The proofs build on results and ideas from recent papers of Hochard and the current authors.
We consider weakly and strongly asymptotically mean value harmonic (amv-harmonic) functions on subriemannian and RCD settings. We demonstrate that, in non-collapsed RCD-spaces with vanishing metric measure boundary, Cheeger harmonic functions are weakly amv-harmonic and that, in Carnot groups, weak amv-harmonicity equivalently characterizes harmonicity in the sense of the sub-Laplacian. In homogeneous Carnot groups of step $2$, we prove a Blaschke-Privaloff-Zaremba type theorem. Similar results are discussed in the settings of Riemannian manifolds and for Alexandrov surfaces.
We prove that a compact $RCD^*(0,N)$ (or equivalently $RCD(0,N)$) metric measure space, $\left(X, d, m \right)$, with $\diam X \le d$ and its first (nonzero) eigenvalue of the Laplacian (in the sense of Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaré) , $λ_1 = \frac{π^2}{d^2}$, has to be a circle or a line segment with diameter, $π$. This completely characterizes the equality in Zhong-Yang type sharp spectral gap estimates in the metric measure setting with Riemannian lower Ricci bounds. Among such spaces, are the familiar Riemannian manifolds with $\Ric \ge 0$, $(0,N)-$ Bakry-Émery manifolds, $(0,n)-$ Ricci limit spac…
In this article we prove a differentiable rigidity result. Let $(Y, g)$ and $(X, g_0)$ be two closed $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds ($n\geqslant 3$) and $f:Y\to X$ be a continuous map of degree $1$. We furthermore assume that the metric $g_0$ is real hyperbolic and denote by $d$ the diameter of $(X,g_0)$. We show that there exists a number $\varepsilon:=\varepsilon (n, d)>0$ such that if the Ricci curvature of the metric $g$ is bounded below by $-n(n-1)$ and its volume satisfies $\vol_g (Y)\leqslant (1+\varepsilon) \vol_{g_0} (X)$ then the manifolds are diffeomorphic. The proof relies on…
We consider invariant Riemannian metrics on compact homogeneous spaces $G/H$ where an intermediate subgroup $K$ between $G$ and $H$ exists. In this case, the homogeneous space $G/H$ is the total space of a Riemannian submersion. The metrics constructed by shrinking the fibers in this way can be interpreted as metrics obtained from a Cheeger deformation and are thus well known to be nonnegatively curved. On the other hand, if the fibers are homothetically enlarged, it depends on the triple of groups $(H,K,G)$ whether nonnegative curvature is maintained for small deformations. Building on the wo…
We extend several Cheeger-type isoperimetric bounds for convex sets in Euclidean space, due to Bobkov and Kannan-Lovász-Simonovits, to Riemannian manifolds having non-negative Ricci curvature. In order to extend Bobkov's bound, we require in addition an upper bound on the sectional curvature of the space, which permits us to use comparison tools in Cartan-Alexandrov-Toponogov (or CAT) spaces. Along the way, we also quantitatively improve our previous result that weak concentration assumptions imply a Cheeger-type isoperimetric bound, to a sharp bound with respect to all parameters.
For a closed Riemannian manifold we extend the definition of analytic and Reidemeister torsion associated to an orthogonal representation of fundamental group on a Hilbert module of finite type over a finite von Neumann algebra. If the representation is of determinant class we prove, generalizing the Cheeger-Müller theorem, that the analytic and Reidemeister torsion are equal. In particular, this proves the conjecture that for closed Riemannian manifolds with positive Novikov-Shubin invariants, the L2 analytic and Reidemeister torsions are equal.
We show that the geodesic period spectrum of a Riemannian 2-orbifold all of whose geodesics are closed depends, up to a constant, only on its orbifold topology and compute it. In the manifold case we recover the fact proved by Gromoll, Grove and Pries that all prime geodesics have the same length. In the appendix we partly strengthen our result in terms of conjugacy of contact forms and explain how to deduce rigidity on the real projective plane based on a systolic inequality due to Pu. (We do not use a Lusternik-Schnirelmann type theorem on the existence of at least three simple closed geodes…
We prove, as our main theorem, the finiteness of topological type of a complete open Riemannian manifold $M$ with a base point $p \in M$ whose radial curvature at $p$ is bounded from below by that of a non-compact model surface of revolution $\tilde{M}$ which admits a finite total curvature and has no pair of cut points in a sector. Here a sector is, by definition, a domain cut off by two meridians emanating from the base point $\tilde{p} \in \tilde{M}$. Notice that our model $\tilde{M}$ does not always satisfy the diameter growth condition introduced by Abresch and Gromoll. In order to prove …
We study the differential geometric consequences of our previous result on the existence of fat triangulations, in conjunction with a result of Cheeger, Müller and Schrader, regarding the convergence of Lipschitz-Killing curvatures of piecewise-flat approximations of smooth Riemannian manifolds. A further application to the existence of quasiconformal mappings between manifolds, as well as an extension of the triangulation result to the case of almost Riemannian manifolds, are also given. In addition, the notion of fatness of triangulations and its relation to metric curvature and to excess is…
We show that for an arbitrarily given closed Riemannian manifold $M$ admitting a point $p \in M$ with a single cut point, every closed Riemannian manifold $N$ admitting a point $q \in N$ with a single cut point is diffeomorphic to $M$ if the radial curvatures of $N$ at $q$ are sufficiently close in the sense of $L^1$-norm to those of $M$ at $p$. Our result hence not only produces a weak version of the Cartan--Ambrose--Hicks theorem in the case where underlying manifolds admit a point with a single cut point, but also is a kind of a weak version of the Blaschke conjecture for spheres proved by …
We examine the theory of metric currents of Ambrosio and Kirchheim in the setting of spaces admitting differentiable structures in the sense of Cheeger and Keith. We prove that metric forms which vanish in the sense of Cheeger on a set must also vanish when paired with currents concentrated along that set. From this we deduce a generalization of the chain rule, and show that currents of absolutely continuous mass are given by integration against measurable $k$-vector fields. We further prove that if the underlying metric space is a Carnot group with its Carnot-Carathéodory distance, then every…
In this paper we introduce a synthetic notion of Riemannian Ricci bounds from below for metric measure spaces (X,d,m) which is stable under measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and rules out Finsler geometries. It can be given in terms of an enforcement of the Lott, Sturm and Villani geodesic convexity condition for the entropy coupled with the linearity of the heat flow. Besides stability, it enjoys the same tensorization, global-to-local and local-to-global properties. In these spaces, that we call RCD(K,\infty) spaces, we prove that the heat flow (which can be equivalently characterized ei…
