We show how 'test' vector fields may be used to give lower bounds for the Cheeger constant of a Euclidean domain (or Riemannian manifold with boundary), and hence for the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on the domain. Also, we show that a continuous version of the classical Max Flow Min Cut Theorem for networks implies that Cheeger's constant may be obtained precisely from such vector fields. Finally, we apply these ideas to reprove a known lower bound for Cheeger's constant in terms of the inradius of a plane domain.
The Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are larger on a flat disc than on any other surface of revoltuion immersed in Euclidean space with the same boundary.
We prove stability estimates for the isoperimetric inequalities for the first and the second nonzero Laplace eigenvalues on surfaces, both globally and in a fixed conformal class. We employ the notion of eigenvalues of measures and show that if a normalized eigenvalue is close to its maximal value, the corresponding measure must be close in the Sobolev space $W^{-1,2}$ to the set of maximizing measures. In particular, this implies a qualitative stability result: metrics almost maximizing the normalized eigenvalue must be $W^{-1,2}$-close to a maximal metric. Following this approach, we prove s…
For the biharmonic Steklov eigenvalue problem considered in this paper, we show that among all bounded Euclidean domains of class $C^{1}$ with fixed measure, the ball maximizes the first positive eigenvalue.
We prove that a plane domain which is almost isoperimetric (with respect to the $L^1$ metric) is close to a square whose sides are parallel to the coordinates axis. Closeness is measured either by $L^\infty$ Haussdorf distance or Fraenkel asymmetry. In the first case, we determine the extremal domains.
This paper deals with eigenvalue optimization problems for a family of natural Schrödinger operators arising in some geometrical or physical contexts. These operators, whose potentials are quadratic in curvature, are considered on closed surfaces immersed in space forms and we look for geometries that maximize the eigenvalues. We show that under suitable assumptions on the potential, the first and the second eigenvalues are maximized by (round) spheres.
We prove that if a geodesic metric measure space satisfies a comparison condition for isoperimetric profile and if the observable variance is maximal, then the space is foliated by minimal geodesics, where the observable variance is defined to be the supremum of the variance of 1-Lipschitz functions on the space. Our result can be considered as a variant of Cheeger-Gromoll's splitting theorem and also of Cheng's maximal diameter theorem. As an application, we obtain a new isometric splitting theorem for a complete weighted Riemannian manifold with a positive Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature.
In the main theorem of this paper we treat the problem of existence of minimizers of the isoperimetric problem under the assumption of small volumes. Applications of the main theorem to asymptotic expansions of the isoperimetric problem are given.
In the present paper we use twistor theory in order to solve two problems related to harmonic maps from surfaces to Euclidean spheres $\mathbb{S}^n$. First, we propose a new approach to isoperimetric inequalities based on energy index. Using this approach we show that for any positive $k$, the $k$-th non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the real projective plane endowed with a metric of unit area, is maximized on the sequence of metrics converging to a union of $(k-1)$ identical copies of round sphere and a single round projective plane. This extends the results of P. Li and S.-T. Yau for $…
Let $g$ be a metric on $S^3$ with positive Yamabe constant. When blowing up $g$ at two points, a scalar flat manifold with two asymptotically flat ends is produced and this manifold will have compact minimal surfaces. We introduce the $\Th$-invariant for $g$ which is an isoperimetric constant for the cylindrical domain inside the outermost minimal surface of the blown-up metric. Further we find relations between $\Th$ and the Yamabe constant and the existence of horizons in the blown-up metric on $\mR^3$.
We obtain a sharp lower bound on the isoperimetric deficit of a general polygon in terms of the variance of its side lengths, the variance of its radii, and its deviation from being convex. Our technique involves a functional minimization problem on a suitably constructed compact manifold and is based on the spectral theory for circulant matrices.
We prove some old and new isoperimetric inequalities with the best constant using the ABP method applied to an appropriate linear Neumann problem. More precisely, we obtain a new family of sharp isoperimetric inequalities with weights (also called densities) in open convex cones of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our result applies to all nonnegative homogeneous weights satisfying a concavity condition in the cone. Remarkably, Euclidean balls centered at the origin (intersected with the cone) minimize the weighted isoperimetric quotient, even if all our weights are nonradial ---except for the constant ones. W…
In this paper we first prove some linear isoperimetric inequalities for submanifolds in the de Sitter-Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom manifolds. Moreover, the equality is attained. Next, we prove some monotonicity formulas for submanifolds with bounded mean curvature vector in warped product manifolds and, as consequences, we give lower bound estimates for the volume of these submanifolds in terms of the warping function. We conclude the paper with an isoperimetric inequality for minimal surfaces.
In this paper we revisit the anisotropic isoperimetric and the Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for convex sets. The best known constant $C(n)=Cn^{7}$ depending on the space dimension $n$ in both inequalities is due to Segal [\ref{bib:Seg.}]. We improve that constant to $Cn^6$ for convex sets and to $Cn^5$ for centrally symmetric convex sets. We also conjecture, that the best constant in both inequalities must be of the form $Cn^2,$ i.e., quadratic in $n.$ The tools are the Brenier's mapping from the theory of mass transportation combined with new sharp geometric-arithmetic mean and some algebraic…
We establish a structure theorem for minimizing sequences for the isoperimetric problem on noncompact $\mathsf{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathcal{H}^N)$. Under the sole (necessary) assumption that the measure of unit balls is uniformly bounded away from zero, we prove that the limit of such a sequence is identified by a finite collection of isoperimetric regions possibly contained in pointed Gromov--Hausdorff limits of the ambient space $X$ along diverging sequences of points. The number of such regions is bounded linearly in terms of the measure of the minimizing sequence. The result f…
Our main result gives an improved bound on the filling areas of closed curves in Banach spaces which are not closed geodesics. As applications we show rigidity of Pu's classical systolic inequality and investigate the isoperimetric constants of normed spaces. The latter has further applications concerning the regularity of minimal surfaces in Finsler manifolds.
Motivated by Perelman's Pseudo Locality Theorem for the Ricci flow, we prove that if a Riemannian manifold has Ricci curvature bounded below in a metric ball which moreover has almost maximal volume, then in a smaller ball (in a quantified sense) it holds an almost-euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The result is actually established in the more general framework of non-smooth spaces satisfying local Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transportation.
In this paper we study regularity and topological properties of volume constrained minimizers of quasi-perimeters in $\sf RCD$ spaces where the reference measure is the Hausdorff measure. A quasi-perimeter is a functional given by the sum of the usual perimeter and of a suitable continuous term. In particular, isoperimetric sets are a particular case of our study. We prove that on an ${\sf RCD}(K,N)$ space $({\rm X},{\sf d},\mathcal{H}^N)$, with $K\in\mathbb R$, $N\geq 2$, and a uniform bound from below on the volume of unit balls, volume constrained minimizers of quasi-perimeters are open bou…
We show that the Cheeger constant of compact surfaces is bounded by a function of the area. We apply this to isoperimetric profiles of bounded genus non-compact surfaces, to show that if their isoperimetric profile grows faster than $\sqrt t$, then it grows at least as fast as a linear function. This generalizes a result of Gromov for simply connected surfaces. We study the isoperimetric problem in dimension 3. We show that if the filling volume function in dimension 2 is Euclidean, while in dimension 3 is sub-Euclidean and there is a $g$ such that minimizers in dimension 3 have genus at most …
