We establish a structure theorem for minimizing sequences for the isoperimetric problem on noncompact $\mathsf{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathcal{H}^N)$. Under the sole (necessary) assumption that the measure of unit balls is uniformly bounded away from zero, we prove that the limit of such a sequence is identified by a finite collection of isoperimetric regions possibly contained in pointed Gromov--Hausdorff limits of the ambient space $X$ along diverging sequences of points. The number of such regions is bounded linearly in terms of the measure of the minimizing sequence.
The result follows from a new generalized compactness theorem, which identifies the limit of a sequence of sets $E_i\subset X_i$ with uniformly bounded measure and perimeter, where $(X_i,\mathsf{d}_i,\mathcal{H}^N)$ is an arbitrary sequence of $\mathsf{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces.
An abstract criterion for a minimizing sequence to converge without losing mass at infinity to an isoperimetric set is also discussed. The latter criterion is new also for smooth Riemannian spaces.
In the main theorem of this paper we treat the problem of existence of minimizers of the isoperimetric problem under the assumption of small volumes. Applications of the main theorem to asymptotic expansions of the isoperimetric problem are given.
We establish a new symmetrization procedure for the isoperimetric problem in symmetric spaces of noncompact type. This symmetrization generalizes the well known Steiner symmetrization in euclidean space. In contrast to the classical construction the symmetrized domain is obtained by solving a nonlinear elliptic equation of mean curvature type. We conclude the paper discussing possible applications to the isoperimetric problem in symmetric spaces of noncompact type.
For a complete noncompact connected Riemannian manifold with bounded geometry, we prove the existence of isoperimetric regions in a larger space obtained by adding finitely many limit manifolds at infinity. As one of many possible applications, we extend properties of the isoperimetric profile from compact manifolds to such noncompact manifolds.
Motivated by Perelman's Pseudo Locality Theorem for the Ricci flow, we prove that if a Riemannian manifold has Ricci curvature bounded below in a metric ball which moreover has almost maximal volume, then in a smaller ball (in a quantified sense) it holds an almost-euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The result is actually established in the more general framework of non-smooth spaces satisfying local Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transportation.
We prove a sharp dimension-free isoperimetric inequality, involving the volume entropy, in non-compact metric measure spaces with non-negative synthetic Ricci curvature.
In this work, we first establish short time existence and Shi's type estimate of second Ricci flow on complete noncompact Hermitian manifolds. As an application, we use the second Ricci flow to discuss the existence of Kaehler-Einstein metric on complete noncompact Hermitian manifolds.
In this paper we provide new existence results for isoperimetric sets of large volume in Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth. We find sufficient conditions for their existence in terms of the geometry at infinity of the manifold. As a byproduct we show that isoperimetric sets of big volume always exist on manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and Euclidean volume growth. Our method combines an asymptotic mass decomposition result for minimizing sequences, a sharp isoperimetric inequality on nonsmooth spaces, and the concavity property of t…
We show that recent work of Ni and Wilking yields the result that a noncompact nonflat Ricci shrinker has at most quadratic scalar curvature decay. The examples of noncompact Kähler--Ricci shrinkers by Feldman, Ilmanen, and Knopf exhibit that this result is sharp.
In this note we show that, under certain curvature positivity conditions (the weak $\operatorname{PIC}-2$ condition or the nonnegative bisectional curvature condition), a complete and noncompact expanding breather of the Ricci flow is also an expanding gradient Ricci soliton. This is the first no expanding breather theorem in the noncompact category.
In this paper, we prove a pseudolocality-type theorem for $\mathcal L$-complete noncompact Ricci flow which may not have bounded sectional curvature; with the help of it we study the uniqueness of the Ricci flow on noncompact manifolds. In particular, we prove the strong uniqueness theorem for the $\mathcal L$-complete Ricci flow on the Euclidean space. This partially answers a question proposed by B-L.~Chen.
In this paper, we continue to study the generalized Ricci flow. We give a criterion on steady gradient Ricci soliton on complete and noncompact Riemannian manifolds that is Ricci-flat, and then introduce a natural flow whose stable points are Ricci-flat metrics. Modifying the argument used by Shi and List, we prove the short time existence and higher order derivatives estimates.
In this short paper, we show there do not exist three-dimensional noncompact $κ$-solutions of Ricci flow that have positive curvature and satisfy a Type-I bound. This represents progress towards the proof of Perelman's conjecture that the only complete noncompact three-dimensional $κ$-solution with positive curvature is the Bryant soliton.
Let $({\M}, g(t))$ be a Kähler Ricci flow with positive first Chern class. We prove a uniform isoperimetric inequality for all time. In the process we also prove a Cheng-Yau type log gradient bound for positive harmonic functions on $({\M}, g(t))$, and a Poincaré inequality without assuming the Ricci curvature is bounded from below.
We prove that the isoperimetric inequality is satisfied in the cigar steady soliton and in the Bryant steady soliton. Since both of them are Riemannian manifolds with warped product metric, we utilize the result of Guan-Li-Wang to get our conclusion. For the sake of the soliton structure, we believe that the geometric restrictions for manifolds in which the isoperimetric inequality holds are naturally satisfied for steady Ricci solitons.
Gradient steady Ricci solitons are natural generalizations of Ricci-flat manifolds. In this article, we prove a curvature gap theorem for gradient steady Ricci solitons with nonconstant potential functions; and a curvature gap theorem for Ricci-flat manifolds, removing the volume growth assumptions in known results.
We provide an isoperimetric comparison theorem for small volumes in an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$ with strong bounded geometry, as in Definition $2.3$, involving the scalar curvature function. Namely in strong bounded geometry, if the supremum of scalar curvature function $S_g<n(n-1)k_0$ for some $k_0\in\mathbb{R}$, then for small volumes the isoperimetric profile of $(M^n,g)$ is less then or equal to the isoperimetric profile of $\mathbb{M}^n_{k_0}$ the complete simply connected space form of constant sectional curvature $k_0$. This work generalizes Theorem $2$ of [Dru02b] …
In this paper, we generalize topological results known for noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature to spaces with nonnegative $N$-Bakry Émery Ricci curvature. We study the Splitting Theorem and a property called the geodesic loops to infinity property in relation to spaces with nonnegative $N$-Bakry Émery Ricci Curvature. In addition, we show that if $M^n$ is a complete, noncompact Riemannian manifold with nonnegative $N$-Bakry Émery Ricci curvature where $N>n$, then $H_{n-1}(M,\mathbb{Z})$ is $0$.
In this paper we prove that there is no $κ$-solution of Ricci flow on 3-dimensional noncompact manifold with strictly positive sectional curvature and blow up at some finite time $T$ satisfying $\int^T_0 \sqrt{T-t} R(p_0,t)dt< \infty$ for some point $p_0$. This partially confirms a conjecture of Perelman.
We extend some convergence results on nonsingular compact Ricci flows in the papers \cite{Ha:1}, \cite{Se:1} and \cite{FZZ:2} to certain infinite volume noncompact cases which are "partially" nonsingular. As an application, for a finite time singularity which is partially type I, it is shown that a blow up limit is a gradient shrinking soliton.
We prove that the results regarding the Isoperimetric inequality and Cheeger constant formulated in terms of the Minkowski content, obtained by the authors in previous papers in the framework of essentially non-branching metric measure spaces verifying the local curvature dimension condition, also hold in the stronger formulation in terms of the perimeter.
In this work, we obtain existence criteria for Chern-Ricci flows on noncompact manifolds. We generalize a result by Tossati-Wienkove on Chern-Ricci flows to noncompact manifolds and at the same time generalize a result for Kahler-Ricci flows by Lott-Zhang to Chern-Ricci flows. Using the existence results, we prove that any complete noncollapsed Kahler metric with nonnegative bisectional curvature on a noncompact complex manifold can be deformed to a complete Kahler metric with nonnegative and bounded bisectional curvature which will have maximal volume growth if the initial metric has maximal …
Let $(M^3,g_0)$ be a complete noncompact Riemannian 3-manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and with injectivity radius bounded away from zero. Suppose that the scalar curvature $R(x)\to 0$ as $x\to \infty$. Then the Ricci flow with initial data $(M^3,g_0)$ has a long time solution. This extends a recent result of Ma and Zhu. We also have a higher dimensional version, and we reprove a K$\ddot{a}$hler analogy due to Chau, Tam and Yu.
We show that the isoperimetric profile $h_{g(t)}(ξ)$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ is jointly continuous when metrics $g(t)$ vary continuously. We also show that, when $M$ is a compact surface and $g(t)$ evolves under normalized Ricci flow, $h^2_{g(t)}(ξ)$ is uniform Lipschitz continuous and hence $h_{g(t)}(ξ)$ is uniform locally Lipschitz continuous.
In this paper, we first show that a complete shrinking breather with Ricci curvature bounded from below must be a shrinking gradient Ricci soliton. This result has several applications. First, we can classify all complete $3$-dimensional shrinking breathers. Second, we can show that every complete shrinking Ricci soliton with Ricci curvature bounded from below must be gradient -- a generalization of Naber's result. Furthermore, we develop a general condition for the existence of the asymptotic shrinking gradient Ricci soliton, which hopefully will contribute to the study of ancient solutions.
The goal of this article is to investigate complete noncompact warped product gradient Ricci solitons. Nonexistence results, estimates for the warping function and for its gradient are proven. When the soliton is steady or expanding these nonexistence results generalize to a broader context certain pde estimates and rigidity obtained when studying warped product Einstein manifolds. When the soliton is shrinking, it is presented a nonexistence theorem with no counterpart in the Einstein case, which is proved using properties of the first eigenvalue of a weighted Laplacian.
We consider the Ricci flow $\frac{\partial}{\partial t}g=-2Ric$ on the 3-dimensional complete noncompact manifold $(M,g(0))$ with non-negative curvature operator, i.e., $Rm\geq 0, |Rm(p)|\to 0, ~as ~d(o,p)\to 0.$ We prove that the Ricci flow on such a manifold is nonsingular in any finite time.
We prove that if $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathfrak{m})$ is a metric measure space with $\mathfrak{m}(X)=1$ having (in a synthetic sense) Ricci curvature bounded from below by $K>0$ and dimension bounded above by $N\in [1,\infty)$, then the classic Lévy-Gromov isoperimetric inequality (together with the recent sharpening counterparts proved in the smooth setting by E. Milman for any $K\in \mathbb{R}$, $N\geq 1$ and upper diameter bounds) hold, i.e. the isoperimetric profile function of $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathfrak{m})$ is bounded from below by the isoperimetric profile of the model space. Moreover, if equal…
In this paper, we give the first detailed proof of the short-time existence of Deane Yang's local Ricci flow. Then using the local Ricci flow, we prove short-time existence of the Ricci flow on noncompact manifolds, whose Ricci curvature has global lower bound and sectional curvature has only local average integral bound. The short-time existence of the Ricci flow on noncompact manifolds with bounded curvature was studied by Wan-Xiong Shi in 1990s. As a corollary of our main theorem, we get the short-time existence part of Shi's theorem in this more general context.
The Ricci flow is an evolution system on metrics. For a given metric as initial data, its local existence and uniqueness on compact manifolds was first established by Hamilton \cite{Ha1}. Later on, De Turck \cite{De} gave a simplified proof. In the later of 80's, Shi \cite{Sh1} generalized the local existence result to complete noncompact manifolds. However, the uniqueness of the solutions to the Ricci flow on complete noncompact manifolds is still an open question. Recently it was found that the uniqueness of the Ricci flow on complete noncompact manifolds is important in the theory of the Ri…
In this paper we prove that a complete noncompact manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature has a trivial codimension one homology unless it is a split or flat normal bundle over a compact totally geodesic submanifold. In particular, we prove the conjecture that a complete noncompact manifold with positive Ricci curvature has a trivial codimension one integer homology. We also have a corollary stating when the codimension two integer homology of such a manifold is torsion free.
In this article, we provide some volume growth estimates for complete noncompact gradient Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein manifolds similar to the classical results by Bishop, Calabi and Yau for complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We prove a sharp volume growth estimate for complete noncompact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton. Moreover, we provide upper bound volume growth estimates for complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ=0.$ In addition, we prove that geodesic balls of complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ<0$ and $μ\leq 0$ have at …
We prove the uniqueness of solutions of the Ricci flow on complete noncompact manifolds with bounded curvatures using the De Turck approach. As a consequence we obtain a correct proof of the existence of solution of the Ricci harmonic flow on complete noncompact manifolds with bounded curvatures.
We prove a comparison theorem for the isoperimetric profiles of solutions of the normalized Ricci flow on the two-sphere: If the isoperimetric profile of the initial metric is greater than that of some positively curved axisymmetric metric, then the inequality remains true for the isoperimetric profiles of the evolved metrics. We apply this using the Rosenau solution as the model metric to deduce sharp time-dependent curvature bounds for arbitrary solutions of the normalized Ricci flow on the two-sphere. This gives a simple and direct proof of convergence to a constant curvature metric without…
Under suitable conditions near infinity and assuming boundedness of curvature tensor, we prove a no breathers theorem in the spirit of Ivey-Perelman for some noncompact Ricci flows. These include Ricci flows on asymptotically flat (AF) manifolds with positive scalar curvature. Since the method for the compact case faces a difficulty, the proof involves solving a new non-local elliptic equation which is the Euler-Lagrange equation of a scaling invariant log Sobolev inequality.
The notion of strictly outward minimising hull is investigated for open sets of finite perimeter sitting inside a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. Under natural geometric assumptions on the ambient manifold, the strictly outward minimising hull $Ω^*$ of a set $Ω$ is characterised as a maximal volume solution of the least area problem with obstacle, where the obstacle is the set itself. In the case where $Ω$ has $\mathscr{C}^{1, α}$-boundary, the area of $\partial Ω^*$ is recovered as the limit of the $p$-capacities of $Ω$, as $p \to 1^+$. Finally, building on the existence of strictly …
A comparison theorem for the isoperimetric profile on the universal cover of surfaces evolving by normalised Ricci flow is proven. For any initial metric, a model comparison is constructed that initially lies below the profile of the initial metric and which converges to the profile of the constant curvature metric. The comparison theorem implies that the evolving metric is bounded below by the model comparison for all time and hence converges to the constant curvature profile. This yields a curvature bound and a bound on the isoperimetric constant, leading to a direct proof that the metric co…
In this paper we derive a precise estimate on the growth of potential functions of complete noncompact shrinking solitons. Based on this, we prove that a complete noncompact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton has at most Euclidean volume growth. The latter result can be viewed as an analog of the well-known theorem of Bishop that a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature has at most Euclidean volume growth.
In this paper we prove the existence of isoperimetric regions of any volume in Riemannian manifolds with Ricci bounded below assuming Gromov--Hausdorff asymptoticity to the suitable simply connected model of constant sectional curvature. The previous result is a consequence of a general structure theorem for perimeter-minimizing sequences of sets of fixed volume on noncollapsed Riemannian manifolds with a lower bound on the Ricci curvature. We show that, without assuming any further hypotheses on the asymptotic geometry, all the mass and the perimeter lost at infinity, if any, are recovered by…
In this note, an isoperimetric inequality for the harmonic mean of lower order Steklov eigenvalues is proved on bounded domains in noncompact rank-$1$ symmetric spaces. This work extends result of \cite{BR.01} and \cite{V.21} proved for bounded domains in Euclidean space and Hyperbolic space, respectively.
We prove that if $(X,\mathsf d,\mathfrak m)$ is an essentially non-branching metric measure space with $\mathfrak m(X)=1$, having Ricci curvature bounded from below by $K$ and dimension bounded from above by $N \in (1,\infty)$, understood as a synthetic condition called Measure-Contraction property, then a sharp isoperimetric inequality à la Lévy-Gromov holds true. Measure theoretic rigidity is also obtained.
By using optimal mass transport theory we prove a sharp isoperimetric inequality in ${\sf CD} (0,N)$ metric measure spaces assuming an asymptotic volume growth at infinity. Our result extends recently proven isoperimetric inequalities for normed spaces and Riemannian manifolds to a nonsmooth framework. In the case of $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, we outline an alternative proof of the rigidity result of S. Brendle (2021). As applications of the isoperimetric inequality, we establish Sobolev and Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequalities with explicit sharp const…
