We show that any Jacobi field along a harmonic map from the 2-sphere to the complex projective plane is integrable (i.e., is tangent to a smooth variation through harmonic maps). This provides one of the few known answers to this problem of integrability, which was raised in different contexts of geometry and analysis. It implies that the Jacobi fields form the tangent bundle to each component of the manifold of harmonic maps from $S^2$ to ${\bf C}P^2$ thus giving the nullity of any such harmonic map; it also has bearing on the behaviour of weakly harmonic $E$-minimizing maps from a 3-manifold to ${\bf C}P^2$ near a singularity and the structure of the singular set of such maps from any manifold to ${\bf C}P^2$.
In a previous paper, we showed that any Jacobi field along a harmonic map from the 2-sphere to the complex projective plane is integrable (i.e., is tangent to a smooth variation through harmonic maps). In this paper, in contrast, we show that there are (non-full) harmonic maps from the 2-sphere to the 3-sphere and 4-sphere which have non-integrable Jacobi fields. This is particularly surprising in the case of the 3-sphere where the space of harmonic maps of any degree is a smooth manifold, each map having image in a totally geodesic 2-sphere.
In this paper, we study the first eigenvalue of Jacobi operator on an $n$-dimensional non-totally umbilical compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature $H$ in the unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$. We give an optimal upper bound for the first eigenvalue of Jacobi operator, which only depends on the mean curvature $H$ and the dimension $n$.
We show that an invariant surface allows to construct the Jacobi vector field along a geodesic and construct the formula for the normal component of the Jacobi field. If a geodesic is the transversal intersection of two invariant surfaces (such situation we have, for example, if the geodesic is hyperbolic), then we can construct a fundamental solution of the the Jacobi-Hill equation. This is done for quadratically integrable geodesic flows.
We consider the Jacobi operator, defined on a closed oriented hypersurfaces immersed in the Euclidean space with the same volume of the unit sphere. We show a local generalization for the classical result of the Willmore functional for the Euclidean sphere. As a consequence, we prove that the first eigenvalue of the Jacobi operator in the Euclidean sphere is a local maximum and this result is a global one in the closed oriented surfaces space of $\mathbb{R}^3$ and genus zero.
We consider evolution equations for curves in the 3-dimensional sphere $S^3$ that are invariant under the group $SU(2,1)$ of pseudoconformal transformations, which preserves the standard contact structure on the sphere. In particular, we investigate how invariant evolutions of Legendrian and transverse curves induce well-known integrable systems and hierarchies at the level of their geometric invariants.
In this work we are concerned with reduction of the ASD-equations to the Riemann sphere, that is integrable connections with a harmonic metric, or equivalently Higgs bundles with a Hermitian-Einstein metric. In the first chapter, we introduce the type of singularities we allow for the solutions to have, and announce the main results of the paper. In the second chapter, we study the analytical properties of the Dirac and Green's operators of our problem. In the third one, we carry out the main construction of the paper, namely that of the Nahm transform of an integrable connection with paraboli…
We prove that harmonic morphisms preserve the Jacobi operator along harmonic maps. We apply this result to prove infinitesimal and local rigidity (in the sense of Toth) of harmonic morphisms to a sphere.
In this paper we study almost complex and almost para-complex Cayley structures on six-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian spheres in the space of purely imaginary octaves of the split Cayley algebra $\mathbf{Ca}'$. It is shown that the Cayley structures are non-integrable, their basic geometric characteristics are calculated. In contrast to the usual Riemann sphere $\mathbb{S}^6$, there exist (integrable) complex structures and para-complex structures on the pseudospheres under consideration.
The stability of the 3-dimensional Hopf vector field, as a harmonic section of the unit tangent bundle, is viewed from a number of different angles. The spectrum of the vertical Jacobi operator is computed, and compared with that of the Jacobi operator of the identity map on the 3-sphere. The variational behaviour of the 3-dimensional Hopf vector field is compared and contrasted with that of the closely-related Hopf map. Finally, it is shown that the Hopf vector fields are the unique global minima of the energy functional restricted to unit vector fields on the 3-sphere.
We present a new Liouville-integrable natural Hamiltonian system on the (cotangent bundle of the) two-dimensional sphere. The second integral is cubic in the momenta.
In this paper we construct a new class of surfaces whose geodesic flow is integrable (in the sense of Liouville). We do so by generalizing the notion of tubes about curves to 3-dimensional manifolds, and using Jacobi fields we derive conditions under which the metric of the generalized tubular sub-manifold admits an ignorable coordinate. Some examples are given, demonstrating that these special surfaces can be quite elaborate and varied.
In the field of optimal transport theory, an optimal map is known to be a gradient map of a potential function satisfying cost-convexity. In this paper, the Jacobian determinant of a gradient map is shown to be log-concave with respect to a convex combination of the potential functions when the underlying manifold is the sphere and the cost function is the distance squared. The proof uses the non-negative cross-curvature property of the sphere recently established by Kim and McCann, and Figalli and Rifford. As an application to statistics, a new family of probability densities on the sphere is…
In this paper a method for the resolution of the differential equation of the Jacobi vector fields in the manifold V1 = Sp(2)/SU(2) is exposed. These results are applied to determine areas and volumes of geodesic spheres and balls.
E. Cartan proved that conformally flat hypersurfaces in S^{n+1} for n>3 have at most two distinct principal curvatures and locally envelop a one-parameter family of (n-1)-spheres. We prove that the Gauss-Codazzi equation for conformally flat hypersurfaces in S^4 is a soliton equation, and use a dressing action from soliton theory to construct geometric Ribaucour transforms of these hypersurfaces. We describe the moduli of these hypersurfaces in S^4 and their loop group symmetries. We also generalise these results to conformally flat n-immersions in (2n-2)-spheres with flat normal bundle and co…
Let $M\subset \mathbb{S}^{n+1}\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ be a compact cmc rotational hypersurface of the $(n+1)$-dimensional Euclidean unit sphere. Denote by $|A|^2$ the square of the norm of the second fundamental form and $J(f)=-Δf-nf-|A|^2f$ the stability or Jacobi operator. In this paper we compute the spectra of their Laplace and Jacobi operators in terms of eigenvalues of second order Hill's equations. For the minimal rotational examples, we prove that the stability index --the numbers of negative eigenvalues of the Jacobi operator counted with multiplicity -- is greater than $3 n+4$ and w…
We show that Jacobi fields along harmonic maps between suitable spaces preserve conformality, holomorphicity, real isotropy and complex isotropy to first order; this last being one of the key tools in the proof by Lemaire and the author of integrability of Jacobi fields along harmonic maps from the 2-sphere to the complex projective plane.
Integrable Killing tensors are used to classify orthogonal coordinates in which the classical Hamilton-Jacobi equation can be solved by a separation of variables. We completely solve the Nijenhuis integrability conditions for Killing tensors on the sphere $S^3$ and give a set of isometry invariants for the integrability of a Killing tensor. We describe explicitly the space of solutions as well as its quotient under isometries as projective varieties and interpret their algebro-geometric properties in terms of Killing tensors. Furthermore, we identify all Stäckel systems in these varieties. Thi…
In the present paper, we show that the geometry of a screen integrable null hypersurface can be generated from an isometric immersion of a leaf of its screen distribution into the ambient space. We prove, under certain geometric conditions, that such immersions are contained in semi-Euclidean spheres or hyperbolic spaces, and the underlying null hypersurfaces are necessarily umbilic and screen totally umbilic. Where necessary, examples have been given to illustrate the main ideas.
We introduce and study the Chaplygin systems with gyroscopic forces. This natural class of nonholonomic systems has not been treated before. We put a special emphasis on the important subclass of such systems with magnetic forces. The existence of an invariant measure and the problem of Hamiltonization are studied, both within the Lagrangian and the almost-Hamiltonian framework. In addition, we introduce problems of rolling of a ball with the gyroscope without slipping and twisting over a plane and over a sphere in $\mathbb R^n$ as examples of gyroscopic $SO(n)$--Chaplygin systems. We describe…
The closed string model in the background gravity field is considered as a bi-Hamiltonian system in assumption that string model is the integrable model for particular kind of the background fields. The dual nonlocal Poisson brackets(PB), depending of the background fields and of their derivatives, are obtained. The integrability condition is formulated as the compatibility of the bi-Hamiltonity condition and the Jacobi identity of the dual PB. It is shown that the dual brackets and dual Hamiltonians can be obtained from the canonical PB and from the initial Hamiltonian by imposing the second …
We discuss the integrability of Jacobi manifolds by contact groupoids, and then look at what the Jacobi point of view brings new into Poisson geometry. In particular, using contact groupoids, we prove a Kostant-type theorem on the prequantization of symplectic groupoids, which answers a question posed by Weinstein and Xu \cite{prequan}. The methods used are those of Crainic-Fernandes on $A$-paths and monodromy group(oid)s of algebroids. In particular, most of the results we obtain are valid also in the non-integrable case.
We study the large-$N$ limit of the Segal--Bargmann transform on $S^{N-1}(\sqrt N)$, the $(N-1)$-dimensional sphere of radius $\sqrt N$, as a unitary map from the space of square-integrable functions with respect to the normalized spherical measure onto the space of holomorphic square-integrable functions with respect to a certain measure on the quadric. In particular, we give an explicit formulation and describe the geometric models for the limit of the domain, the limit of the range, and the limit of the transform when $N$ tends to infinity. We show that the limiting transform is still a uni…
In this paper, multi-component generalizations to the Camassa-Holm equation, the modified Camassa-Holm equation with cubic nonlinearity are introduced. Geometric formulations to the dual version of the Schrödinger equation, the complex Camassa-Holm equation and the multi-component modified Camassa-Holm equation are provided. It is shown that these equations arise from non-streching invariant curve flows respectively in the three-dimensional Euclidean geometry, the two-dimensional Möbius sphere and $n$-dimensional sphere ${\mathbb S}^n(1)$. Integrability to these systems is also studied.
