We discuss the integrability of Jacobi manifolds by contact groupoids, and then look at what the Jacobi point of view brings new into Poisson geometry. In particular, using contact groupoids, we prove a Kostant-type theorem on the prequantization of symplectic groupoids, which answers a question posed by Weinstein and Xu \cite{prequan}. The methods used are those of Crainic-Fernandes on $A$-paths and monodromy group(oid)s of algebroids. In particular, most of the results we obtain are valid also in the non-integrable case.
A Hamilton-Jacobi theory for general dynamical systems, defined on fibered phase spaces, has been recently developed. In this paper we shall apply such a theory to contact Hamiltonian systems, as those appearing in thermodynamics and on geodesic flows in fluid mechanics. We first study the partial and complete solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi Equation (HJE) related to these systems. Then we show that, for a given contact system, the knowledge of what we have called a complete pseudo-isotropic solution ensures the integrability by quadratures of its equations of motion. This extends to contact …
In this paper we develope, in a geometric framework, a Hamilton-Jacobi Theory for general dynamical systems. Such a theory contains the classical theory for Hamiltonian systems on a cotangent bundle and recent developments in the framework of general symplectic, Poisson and almost-Poisson manifolds (including some approaches to a Hamilton-Jacobi theory for nonholonomic systems). Given a dynamical system, we show that every complete solution of its related Hamilton-Jacobi Equation (HJE) gives rise to a set of first integrals, and vice versa. From that, and in the context of symplectic and Poiss…
This paper explains the fundamental relation between Jacobi structures and the classical Spencer operator coming from the theory of PDEs so as to provide a direct and geometric approach to the integrability of Jacobi structures. It uses recent results on the integrability of Spencer operators and multliplicative forms on Lie groupoids with non-trivial coefficients. In Theorem 1 we show that the Spencer operator associated to a contact groupoid reveals that the base manifold carries a Jacobi structure. Theorem 2 deals with the problem of integrating Jacobi structures to contact groupoids.
In this paper we introduce the notion of infinite dimensional Jacobi structure to describe the geometrical structure of a class of nonlocal Hamiltonian systems which appear naturally when applying reciprocal transformations to Hamiltonian evolutionary PDEs. We prove that our class of infinite dimensional Jacobi structures is invariant under reciprocal transformations. The main technical tool is in a suitable generalization of the classical Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket to the space of the so called quasi-local multi-vectors, and a simple realization of this structure in the framework of supermani…
In this paper, we study the extended Hamilton-Jacobi Theory in the context of dynamical systems with symmetries. Given an action of a Lie group $G$ on a manifold $M$ and a $G$-invariant vector field $X$ on $M$, we construct complete solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation (HJE) related to $X$ (and a given fibration on $M$). We do that along each open subset $U\subseteq M$ such that $π\left(U\right)$ has a manifold structure and $π_{\left|U\right.}:U\rightarrowπ\left(U\right)$, the restriction to $U$ of the canonical projection $π:M\rightarrow M/G$, is a surjective submersion. If $X_{\left|U\…
Starting from a bundle E over R, the dual of the first jet bundle, which is a co-dimension 1 sub-bundle of the cotangent bundle of E, is the appropriate manifold for the geometric description of time-dependent Hamiltonian systems. Based on previous work, we recall properties of the complete lifts of a type (1,1) tensor R on E to both of these manifolds. We discuss how an interplay between these lifted tensors leads to the identification of related distributions on both manifolds. The integrability of these distributions, a coordinate free condition, is shown to produce exactly Forbat's conditi…
We show that any Jacobi field along a harmonic map from the 2-sphere to the complex projective plane is integrable (i.e., is tangent to a smooth variation through harmonic maps). This provides one of the few known answers to this problem of integrability, which was raised in different contexts of geometry and analysis. It implies that the Jacobi fields form the tangent bundle to each component of the manifold of harmonic maps from $S^2$ to ${\bf C}P^2$ thus giving the nullity of any such harmonic map; it also has bearing on the behaviour of weakly harmonic $E$-minimizing maps from a 3-manifold…
The natural bundle $π:E\to M$ of almost-complex structures is considered. The action of the pseudogroup of all diffeomorphisms of $M$ on the total space $E$ is investigated. A nontrivial 1-st order differential invariant of this action is constructed. It is proved that the Nijenhuise tensor of an almost-complex structures is equal to zero iff the constructed invariant for this structure is zero.
Given an $\widetilde n$-dimensional manifold $\widetilde M$ equipped with a $\widetilde G$-structure $\widetildeπ:\widetilde P\rightarrow \widetilde M$, there is a naturally induced $G$-structure $π: P\rightarrow M$ on any submanifold $M\subset\widetilde M$ that satisfies appropriate regularity conditions. We study generalized integrability problems for a given $G$-structure $π: P\rightarrow M$, namely the questions of whether it is locally equivalent to induced $G$-structures on regular submanifolds of homogeneous $\widetilde G$-structures $\widetildeπ:\widetilde P\to \widetilde{H}/\widetilde…
We present infinitely many nonlocal conservation laws, a pair of compatible local Hamiltonian structures and a recursion operator for the equations describing surfaces in three-dimensional space that admit nontrivial deformations which preserve both principal directions and principal curvatures (or, equivalently, the shape operator).
The most general Jacobi brackets in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are constructed after solving the equations imposed by the Jacobi identity. Two classes of Jacobi brackets were identified, according to the rank of the Jacobi structures. The associated Hamiltonian vector fields are also constructed.
We study a class of Poisson-Nijenhuis systems defined on compact hermitian symmetric spaces, where the Nijenhuis tensor is defined as the composition of Kirillov-Konstant-Souriau symplectic form with the so called Bruhat-Poisson structure. We determine its spectrum. In the case of Grassmannians the eigenvalues are the Gelfand-Tsetlin variables. We introduce the abelian algebra of collective hamiltonians defined by a chain of nested subalgebras and prove complete integrability. By construction, these models are integrable with respect to both Poisson structures. The eigenvalues of the Nijenhuis…
We construct families of functions in involution for transverse Poisson structures at nilpotent elements of Lie-Poisson structures on simple Lie algebras by using the argument shift method. Examples show that these families contain completely integrable systems that consist of polynomial functions. We provide a uniform construction of these integrable systems for an infinite family of distinguished nilpotent elements of semisimple type.
We study twisted Jacobi manifolds, a concept that we had introduced in a previous Note. Twisted Jacobi manifolds can be characterized using twisted Dirac-Jacobi, which are sub-bundles of Courant-Jacobi algebroids. We show that each twisted Jacobi manifold has an associated Lie algebroid with a 1-cocycle. We introduce the notion of quasi-Jacobi bialgebroid and we prove that each twisted Jacobi manifold has a quasi-Jacobi bialgebroid canonically associated. Moreover, the double of a quasi-Jacobi bialgebroid is a Courant-Jacobi algebroid. Several examples of twisted Jacobi manifolds and twisted D…
We establish a new criterion for a compatible almost complex structure on a symplectic four-manifold to be integrable and hence Kähler. Our main theorem shows that the existence of three linearly independent closed J-anti-invariant two-forms implies the integrability of the almost complex structure. This proves the conjecture of Draghici-Li-Zhang in the almost-Kähler case
Using the result by D.Gessler (Differential Geom. Appl. 7 (1997) 303-324, DIPS-9/98, http://diffiety.ac.ru/preprint/98/09_98abs.htm), we show that any invariant variational bivector (resp., variational 2-form) on an evolution equation with nondegenerate right-hand side is Hamiltonian (resp., symplectic).
We study the integrability of Poisson and Dirac structures that arise from quotient constructions. From our results we deduce several classical results as well as new applications. We also give explicit constructions of Lie groupoids integrating two interesting families of geometric structures: (i) a special class of Poisson homogeneous spaces of symplectic groupoids integrating Poisson groups and (ii) Dirac homogeneous spaces.
We prove that the classical integrability condition for almost complex structures on finite-dimensional smooth manifolds also works in infinite dimensions in the case of almost complex structures that are real analytic on real analytic Banach manifolds. As an application, we extend some known results concerning existence of invariant complex structures on homogeneous spaces of Banach-Lie groups.
For a Hamiltonian, proper and free action of a Lie group $G$ on a Dirac manifold $(M,L)$, with a regular moment map $μ:M\to \mathfrak{g}^*$, the manifolds $M/G$, $μ^{-1}(0)$ and $μ^{-1}(0)/G$ all have natural induced Dirac structures. If $(M,L)$ is an integrable Dirac structure, we show that $M/G$ is always integrable, but $μ^{-1}(0)$ and $μ^{-1}(0)/G$ may fail to be integrable, and we describe the obstructions to their integrability.
This note is concerned in so called harmonic complex structures introduced by the author previously. I will recall some previous results and emphasize the motivation: Provide an attempt to a fundamental problem in geometry--determining the complex structures on an almost complex manifold. I also discuss the almost-Hermitian case of harmonic complex structures and the connections with balanced structures.
The classical theory of $G$-structures, which include almost-complex structures, explains the relationship between the curvature of compatible connections and integrability. This note is an effort to understand how the curvature of Riemannian metrics can obstruct the integrability of almost-complex structures. It is shown that certain special complex structures cannot coexist with non-flat constant curvature metrics, and a formal variational realization of these structures is provided. The approach followed here is direct, meaning that it bypasses the classical theory. The idea is to find obst…
We extend the Newlander-Nirenberg theorem to manifolds with almost complex structures that have somewhat less than Lipschitz regularity. We also discuss the regularity of local holomorphic coordinates in the integrable case, with particular attention to Lipschitz almost complex structures.
We present a characterization, in terms of torsion-free generalized connections, for the integrability of various generalized structures (generalized almost complex structures, generalized almost hypercomplex structures, generalized almost Hermitian structures and generalized almost hyper-Hermitian structures) defined on Courant algebroids. We develop a new, self-contained, approach for the theory of Dirac generating operators on regular Courant algebroids with scalar product of neutral signature. As an application we provide a criterion for the integrability of generalized almost Hermitian st…
Aguilar introduced isotropic almost complex structures $J_{δ, σ}$ on the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$. In this paper, some results will be obtained on the integrability of these structures. These structures with the Liouville 1-form define a class of Riemannian metrics $g_{δ, σ}$ on $T M$ which are a generalization of the Sasaki metric. Moreover, the notion of a harmonic unit vector field is introduced with respect to these metrics like as the Sasaki metric and the necessary and sufficient conditions for a unit vector field to be a harmonic unit vector field are obtained.
We provide the first known family of examples of integrable homogeneous sub-Riemannian structures admitting strictly abnormal geodesics. These examples were obtained through the analysis of the equivalence problem for sub-Riemannian Engel structures. We formulate a criterion of strict abnormality in terms of structure functions of a canonical frame on a sub-Riemannian Engel manifold as well as estimates on conjugate times.
We characterise the integrability of any co-CR quaternionic structure in terms of the curvature and a generalized torsion of the connection. Also, we apply this result to obtain, for example, the following. (1) New co-CR quaternionic structures built on vector bundles over a quaternionic manifold M, whose twistor spaces are holomorphic vector bundles over the twistor space Z of M. Moreover, all the holomorphic vector bundles over Z, which are positive and isotypic when restricted to the twistor lines, are obtained this way. (2) Under generic dimensional conditions, any manifold endowed with an…
We discuss the integrability of rank 2 sub-Riemannian structures on low-dimensional manifolds, and then prove that some structures of that type in dimension 6, 7 and 8 have a lot of symmetry but no integrals polynomial in momenta of low degrees, except for those coming from the Killing fields and the Hamiltonian, thus indicating non-integrability of the corresponding geodesic flows.
We show that torsion-free four-dimensional $\mathrm{GL}(2)$-structures are flat up to a coframe transformation with a mapping taking values in a certain subgroup $H\subset\mathrm{SL}(4,\mathbb{R})$ which is isomorphic to a semidirect product of the three-dimensional continuous Heisenberg group $H_3(\mathbb{R})$ and the Abelian group $\mathbb{R}$. In addition, we show that the relevant PDE system is integrable in the sense that it admits a dispersionless Lax-pair.
For the purpose of understanding second-order scalar PDEs and their hydrodynamic integrability, we introduce G-structures that are induced on hypersurfaces of the space of symmetric matrices (interpreted as the fiber of second-order jet space) and are defined by non-degenerate scalar second-order-only (Hessian) PDEs in any number of variables. The fiber group is a conformal orthogonal group that acts on the space of independent variables, and it is a subgroup of the conformal orthogonal group for a semi-Riemannian metric that exists on the PDE. These G-structures are automatically compatible w…
We use the supergeometric formalism, more precisely, the so-called "big bracket" (for which brackets and anchors are encoded by functions on some graded symplectic manifold) to address the theory of Jacobi algebroids and bialgebroids (following mainly Iglesias-Marrero and Grabowski-Marmo as a guideline). This formalism is in particular efficient to define the Jacobi-Gerstenhaber algebra structure associated to a Jacobi algebroid, to define its Poissonization, and to express the compatibility condition defining Jacobi bialgebroids. Also, we claim that this supergeometric language gives a simple…
The aim of this paper is to prove a normal form Theorem for Dirac-Jacobi bundles using the recent techniques from Bursztyn, Lima and Meinrenken. As the most important consequence, we can prove the splitting theorems of Jacobi pairs which was proposed by Dazord, Lichnerowicz and Marle. As an application we provide a alternative proof of the splitting theorem of homogeneous Poisson structures.
In this paper we show that space of spatial polygons in semi riemann space gives a Kahler manifold. We describe the tangent space and almost complex structure which has many computational advantages.
