Using the result by D.Gessler (Differential Geom. Appl. 7 (1997) 303-324, DIPS-9/98, http://diffiety.ac.ru/preprint/98/09_98abs.htm), we show that any invariant variational bivector (resp., variational 2-form) on an evolution equation with nondegenerate right-hand side is Hamiltonian (resp., symplectic).
Let $τ\colon\tilde{\mathcal{E}}\to\mathcal{E}$ be a differential covering of a PDE $\tilde{\mathcal{E}}$ over $\mathcal{E}$. We prove that if $\mathcal{E}$ possesses infinite number of symmetries and/or conservation laws then $\tilde{\mathcal{E}}$ has similar properties.
Remarkable parallelism between the theory of integrable systems of first-order quasilinear PDE and some old results in projective and affine differential geometry of conjugate nets, Laplace equations, their Bianchi-Baecklund transformations is exposed. These results were recently applied by I.M.Krichever and B.A.Dubrovin to prove integrability of some models in topological field theories. Within the geometric framework we derive some new integrable (in a sense to be discussed) generalizations describing N-wave resonant interactions.
We prove that the existence of a dispersionless Lax pair with spectral parameter for a nondegenerate hyperbolic second order partial differential equation (PDE) is equivalent to the canonical conformal structure defined by the symbol being Einstein-Weyl on any solution in 3D, and self-dual on any solution in 4D. The first main ingredient in the proof is a characteristic property for dispersionless Lax pairs. The second is the projective behaviour of the Lax pair with respect to the spectral parameter. Both are established for nondegenerate determined systems of PDEs of any order. Thus our main…
We establish an efficient compatibility criterion for a system of generalized complete intersection type in terms of certain multi-brackets of differential operators. These multi-brackets generalize the higher Jacobi-Mayer brackets, important in the study of evolutionary equations and the integrability problem. We also calculate Spencer delta-cohomology of generalized complete intersections and evaluate the formal functional dimension of the solutions space. The results are applied to establish new integration methods and solve several differential-geometric problems.
A new field of discrete differential geometry is presently emerging on the border between differential and discrete geometry. Whereas classical differential geometry investigates smooth geometric shapes (such as surfaces), and discrete geometry studies geometric shapes with finite number of elements (such as polyhedra), the discrete differential geometry aims at the development of discrete equivalents of notions and methods of smooth surface theory. Current interest in this field derives not only from its importance in pure mathematics but also from its relevance for other fields like computer…
We prove that the Kupershmidt deformation of a bi-Hamiltonian system is itself bi-Hamiltonian. Moreover, Magri hierarchies of the initial system give rise to Magri hierarchies of Kupershmidt deformations as well. Since Kupershmidt deformations are not written in evolution form, we start with an outline a geometric framework to study Hamiltonian properties of general non-evolution differential equations, developed in [2] (see also arXiv:0812.4895).
In this paper we present the solution to a longstanding problem of differential geometry: Lie's third theorem for Lie algebroids. We show that the integrability problem is controlled by two computable obstructions. As applications we derive, explain and improve the known integrability results, we establish integrability by local Lie groupoids, we clarify the smoothness of the Poisson sigma-model for Poisson manifolds, and we describe other geometrical applications.
We prove the non-abelian Poincare lemma in higher gauge theory in two different ways. The first method uses a result by Jacobowitz which states solvability conditions for differential equations of a certain type. The second method extends a proof by Voronov and yields the explicit gauge parameters connecting a flat local connective structure to the trivial one. Finally, we show how higher flatness appears as a necessary integrability condition of a linear system which featured in recently developed twistor descriptions of higher gauge theories.
The natural bundle $π:E\to M$ of almost-complex structures is considered. The action of the pseudogroup of all diffeomorphisms of $M$ on the total space $E$ is investigated. A nontrivial 1-st order differential invariant of this action is constructed. It is proved that the Nijenhuise tensor of an almost-complex structures is equal to zero iff the constructed invariant for this structure is zero.
We address the integrability conditions of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations for time-dependent SODE using the Spencer version of the Cartan-Kähler theorem. We consider a linear partial differential operator $P$ given by the two Helmholtz conditions expressed in terms of semi-basic 1-forms and study its formal integrability. We prove that $P$ is involutive and there is only one obstruction for the formal integrability of this operator. The obstruction is expressed in terms of the curvature tensor $R$ of the induced nonlinear connection. We recover some of the classes of Lagrang…
In [17] A. Rapcsák obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for the projective Finsler metrizability in terms of a second order partial differential equations. In this paper we investigate the integrability of the Rapcsák system, consisting of the Rapcsák equations and the homogeneity condition, by using the Spencer version of the Cartan-Kähler theorem. We also consider the extended Rapcsák system, where the first integrability conditions are included.
In this paper we introduce, in the Riemannian setting, the notion of conformal Ricci soliton, which includes as particular cases Einstein manifolds, conformal Einstein manifolds and (generic and gradient) Ricci solitons. We provide here some necessary integrability conditions for the existence of these structures that also recover, in the corresponding contexts, those already known in the literature for conformally Einstein manifolds and for gradient Ricci solitons. A crucial tool in our analysis is the construction of some appropriate and highly nontrivial $(0,3)$-tensors related to the geome…
Rediscovered by a systematic search, a forgotten class of integrable surfaces is shown to disprove the Finkel-Wu conjecture. The associated integrable nonlinear partial differential equation $$ z_{yy} + (1/z)_{xx} + 2 = 0 $$ possesses a zero curvature representation, a third-order symmetry, and a nonlocal transformation to the sine-Gordon equation $ϕ_{ξη} = \sinϕ$. We leave open the problem of finding a Backlund autotransformation and a recursion operator that would produce a local hierarchy.
We realise the first and second Grushin distributions as symmetry reductions of the 3-dimensional Heisenberg distribution and 4-dimensional Engel distribution respectively. Similarly, we realise the Martinet distribution as an alternative symmetry reduction of the Engel distribution. These reductions allow us to derive the integrability conditions for the Grushin and Martinet distributions and build certain complexes of differential operators. These complexes are well-behaved despite the distributions they resolve being non-regular.
It is shown that a simple Lie group $G$ ($ \neq {\rm SL}_2$) can be locally characterised by an integrability condition on an $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathfrak{g})$ structure on the tangent bundle, where $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathfrak{g})$ is the automorphism group of the Lie algebra of $G$. The integrability condition is the vanishing of a torsion tensor of type $(1,2)$. This is a slight improvement of an earlier result proved in [Min-Oo M., Ruh E.A., in Differential Geometry and Complex Analysis, Springer, Berlin, 1985, 205-211].
The fundamental tool in the classification of orthogonal coordinate systems in which the Hamilton-Jacobi and other prominent equations can be solved by a separation of variables are second order Killing tensors which satisfy the Nijenhuis integrability conditions. The latter are a system of three non-linear partial differential equations. We give a simple and completely algebraic proof that for a Killing tensor the third and most complicated of these equations is redundant. This considerably simplifies the classification of orthogonal separation coordinates on arbitrary (pseudo-)Riemannian man…
A Jet groupoid R_q over a manifold X is a special Lie groupoid consisting of q-jets of local diffeomorphisms from X to X. As a subbundle of the q-th order jet bundle of the trivial bundle X times X, a jet groupoid can be considered as a nonlinear system of partial differential equations (PDE). This leads to the concept of formal integrability. On the other hand, each jet groupoid is the symmetry groupoid of a geometric object, modelled as a section of a natural bundle. Using the jet groupoids, we give a local characterisation of formal integrability for transitive jet groupoids in terms of the…
We study $GL(2)$-structures on differential manifolds. The structures play a fundamental role in the geometric theory of ordinary differential equations. We prove that any $GL(2)$-structure on an even dimensional manifold give rise to a certain almost-complex structure on a bundle over the original manifold. Further, we exploit a natural notion of integrability for the $GL(2)$-structures, which is a counterpart of the self-duality for the 4-dimensional conformal structures. We relate the integrability of the $GL(2)$-structures to the integrability of the almost-complex structures. This allows …
