The stability of the 3-dimensional Hopf vector field, as a harmonic section of the unit tangent bundle, is viewed from a number of different angles. The spectrum of the vertical Jacobi operator is computed, and compared with that of the Jacobi operator of the identity map on the 3-sphere. The variational behaviour of the 3-dimensional Hopf vector field is compared and contrasted with that of the closely-related Hopf map. Finally, it is shown that the Hopf vector fields are the unique global minima of the energy functional restricted to unit vector fields on the 3-sphere.
In this paper, we study the rigidity theorem of closed minimally immersed Legendrian submanifolds in the unit sphere. Utilizing the maximum principle, we obtain a new characterization of the Calabi torus in the unit sphere which is the minimal Calabi product Legendrian immersion of a point and the totally geodesic Legendrian sphere. We also establish an optimal Simons' type integral inequality in terms of the second fundamental form of three dimensional closed minimal Legendrian submanifolds in the unit sphere.
In these short notes we characterize the loxodromic unit vector fields on antipodally punctured Euclidean spheres as the only ones achieving a lower bound for the volume functional depending on the Poincaré indexes around their singularities.
This paper is a continuation of [TY12] and [QTY13]. We show that both focal submanifolds of each isoparametric hypersurface in the sphere with six distinct principal curvatures are Willmore.
We present some results on the boundedness of the mean curvature of proper biharmonic submanifolds in spheres. A partial classification result for proper biharmonic submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector field in spheres is obtained. Then, we completely classify the proper biharmonic submanifolds in spheres with parallel mean curvature vector field and parallel Weingarten operator associated to the mean curvature vector field.
A correspondence is established between a class of minimal immersed surfaces of $\mathbb{S}^3(2)$ and area-minimizing unit vector fields defined on the antipodally punctured unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2\backslash\{N,S\}$. As a consequence, we establish a stability relation for Lawson cylinders in $\mathbb{S}^3(2)$.
We provide a lower value for the volume of a unit vector field tangent to an antipodally Euclidean sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ depending on the length of an ellipse determined by the indexes of its singularities. In addition, for minimizing vector fields having specific pair of indexes, we show that their image coincides with the image of minimally immersed Klein bottles.
We provide a lower value for the volume of a unit vector field tangent to an antipodally Euclidean sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ depending on the length of an ellipse determined by the indexes of its singularities.
We obtain the explicit representation of Legendre surfaces in the unit $5$-sphere with harmonic mean curvature vector field, under the condition that the mean curvature function is constant along a certain special direction.
We construct eternal mean curvature flows of tori in perturbations of the standard unit sphere $\Bbb{S}^3$. This has applications to the study of the Morse homologies of area functionals over the space of embedded tori in $\Bbb{S}^3$.
In this work, we study the stability of Hopf vector fields on Lorentzian Berger spheres as critical points of the energy, the volume and the generalized energy. In order to do so, we construct a family of vector fields using the simultaneous eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and of the vertical Laplacian of the sphere. The Hessians of the functionals are negative when they act on these particular vector fields and then Hopf vector fields are unstable. Moreover, we use this technique to study some of the open problems in the Riemannian case.
In this paper, we provide a complete classification for all the isometric cohomogeneity one actions on unit spheres. Using this theory, we can very easily classify all the isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the Riemannian symmetric spaces $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^{m-1}$ and $\mathbb{H}\mathrm{P}^{m-1}$.
We study the properly discontinuous and isometric actions on the unit sphere of infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces and we get some new examples of Hilbert manifold with costant positive sectional curvature. We prove some necessary conditions for a group to act isometrically and properly discontinuously and in the case of finitely generated Abelian groups, the necessary and sufficient conditions are given.
A contact metric manifold is said to be $H$-contact, if the characteristic vector field is harmonic. We prove that the unit tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold $M$ equipped with the standard contact metric structure is $H$-contact if and only if $M$ is $2$-stein.
In this paper, we partially solve Yau' Conjecture of the first eigenvalue of an embedded compact minimal hypersurface of unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}(1)$, i.e., Corollary 1.2. In particular, Corollary 1.3 proves that the condition $\int_{Ω_{1}}|\nabla u|^{2}=(n+1)\int_{Ω_{1}}u^{2}$ is naturally true and meaningful in Corollary 1.2.
An isometric immersion $x:M^n\rightarrow S^{n+p}$ is called Willmore if it is an extremal submanifold of the Willmore functional: $W(x)=\int_{M^n} (S-nH^2)^{\frac{n}{2}}dv$, where $S$ is the norm square of the second fundamental form and $H$ is the mean curvature. Examples of Willmore submanifolds in the unit sphere are scarce in the literature. The present paper gives a series of new examples of Willmore submanifolds in the unit sphere via isoparametric functions of FKM-type.
Let $M^n$ be an $n$-dimensional complete and locally conformally flat hypersurface in the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ with constant scalar curvature $n(n-1)$. We show that if the total curvature $\left( \int _ { M } | H | ^ { n } d v \right) ^ { \frac { 1 } { n } }$ of $M$ is sufficiently small, then $M^n$ is totally geodesic.
Let $M$ be a smooth, connected, compact submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^n$ without boundary and of dimension $k\geq 2$. Let $\mathbb{S}^k \subset \mathbb{R}^{k+1}\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ denote the $k$-dimesnional unit sphere. We show if $M$ has reach equal to one, then its volume satisfies $\text{vol}(M)\geq \text{vol}(\mathbb{S}^k)$ with equality holding only if $M$ is congruent to $\mathbb{S}^k$.
This paper addresses Cheeger and Gromoll's question of which vector bundles admit a complete metric of nonnegative curvature, and relates their question to the issue of which sphere bundles admit a metric of positive curvature. We show that any vector bundle which admits a metric of nonnegative curvature must admit a connection, a tensor, and a metric on the base space which together satisfy a certain differential inequality. On the other hand, a slight sharpening of this condition is sufficient for the associated sphere bundle to admit a metric of positive curvature. Our results sharpen and g…
As is known, the Blaschke tensor $A$ (a symmetric covariant $2$-tensor) is one of the fundamental Möbius invariants in the Möbius differential geometry of submanifolds in the unit sphere $\mathbb S^n$, and the eigenvalues of $A$ are referred to as the Blaschke eigenvalues. In this paper, we shall prove a classification theorem for immersed umbilic-free submanifolds in $\mathbb S^n$ with a parallel Blaschke tensor. For proving this classification, some new kinds of examples are first defined.
For a singular Riemannian foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on a Riemannian manifold, a curve is called horizontal if it meets the leaves of $\mathcal{F}$ perpendicularly. For a singular Riemannian foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on a unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$, we show that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a polar foliation or if $\mathcal{F}$ is given by the orbits of an infinitesimally polar action, then the horizontal diameter of $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ is $π$, i.e., any two points in $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ can be connected by a horizontal curve of length $\leqπ$.
For $n\geq 1$, we exhibit a lower bound for the volume of a unit vector field on $\mathbb{S}^{2n+1}\backslash\{\pm p\}$ depending on the absolute values of its Poincaré indices around $\pm p$. We determine which vector fields achieve this volume, and discuss the idea of having multiple isolated singularities of arbitrary configurations.
How large can be the width of Riemannian three-spheres of the same volume in the same conformal class? If a maximum value is attained, how does a maximising metric look like? What happens as the conformal class changes? In this paper, we investigate these and other related questions, focusing on the context of Simon-Smith min-max theory.
We establish a nice orthonormal frame field on a closed surface minimally immersed in a unit sphere $S^{n}$, under which the shape operators take very simple forms. Using this frame field, we obtain an interesting property $K+K^{N}=1$ for the Gauss curvature $K$ and the normal curvature $K^{N}$ if the Gauss curvature is positive. Moreover, using this property we obtain the pinching on the intrinsic curvature and normal curvature, the pinching on the normal curvature, respectively.
Starting from $g$-natural pseudo-Riemannian metrics of suitable signature on the unit tangent sphere bundle $T_1 M$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M,\langle,\rangle)$, we construct a family of paracontact metric structures. We prove that this class of paracontact metric structures is invariant under $\mathcal D$-homothetic deformations, and classify paraSasakian and paracontact $(κ,μ)$-spaces inside this class. We also present a way to build paracontact $(κ,μ)$-spaces from corresponding contact metric structures on $T_1 M$.
This paper is a continuation of a paper with the same title of the last two authors. In the first part of the present paper, we give a unified geometric proof that both focal submanifolds of every isoparametric hypersurface in spheres with four distinct principal curvatures are Willmore. In the second part, we completely determine which focal submanifolds are Einstein except one case.
The unit sphere $\mathbb S^3$ can be identified with the unitary group SU(2). Under this identification the unit sphere can be considered as a non-commutative Lie group. The commutation relations for the vector fields of the corresponding Lie algebra define a 2-step sub-Riemannian manifold. We study sub-Riemannian geodesics on this sub-Riemannian manifold making use of the Hamiltonian formalism and solving the corresponding Hamiltonian system.
This article studies the harmonicity of vector fields on Riemannian manifolds, viewed as maps into the tangent bundle equipped with a family of Riemannian metrics. Geometric and topological rigidity conditions are obtained, especially for surfaces and vector fields of constant norm, and existence is proved on two-tori. Classifications are given for conformal, quadratic and Killing vector fields on spheres. Finally, the class of metric considered on the tangent bundle is enlarged, permitting new vector fields to become harmonic.
Our aim in this paper is to investigate some geometrical properties of Berger Spheres i.e. homogeneous Ricci solitons and harmonicity properties of invariant vector fields. We determine all vector fields which are critical points for the energy functional restricted to vector fields. We also see that do not exist any vector fields defining harmonic map, and the energy of critical points is explicitly calculated.
In this paper, we study $n$-dimensional hypersurfaces with constant $m^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature in a unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$ and construct many compact nontrivial embedded hypersurfaces with constant $m^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature $H_m>0$ in $S^{n+1}(1)$, for $1\leq m\leq n-1$. In particular, if the $4^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature $H_4$ takes value between $\dfrac{1}{(\tan \fracπ{k})^4}$ and $\dfrac{k^4-4}{n(n-4)}$ for any integer $k\geq3$, then there exists an $n$-dimensional ($n\geq 5$) compact nontrivial embedded hypersurface with constant $H_4$ in $S^{n+1}(1)$.
In this paper, we continue our job for the study on the submanifolds in $\bbs^n$ with parallel Blaschke tensors which we simply call {\em Blaschke parallel submanifolds} to find more examples and seek a complete classification finally. The main theorem of this paper is the classification of Blaschke parallel submanifolds in …
We study a fractional conformal curvature flow on the standard unit sphere and prove a perturbation result of the fractional Nirenberg problem with fractional exponent $σ\in (1/2,1)$. This extends the result of Chen-Xu (Invent. Math. 187, no. 2, 395-506, 2012) for the scalar curvature flow on the standard unit sphere.
We give an interpretation of the maximal number of linearly independent vector fields on spheres in terms of the Spin(9) representation on R^16. This casts an insight on the role of Spin(9) as a subgroup of SO(16) on the existence of vector fields on spheres, parallel to the one played by complex, quaternionic and octonionic structures on R^2, R^4 and R^8, respectively.
In this paper both we establish the best constants for the Nash inequalities on the standard unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ and we give answers on the existence of extremal functions on the corresponding problems. Also we study the problem of the best constants in the case, where the data are invariant under the action of the group $G=O(k)\times O(m)$, and we find the best constants.
We consider the higher order buckling eigenvalues of the following Dirichlet poly-Laplacian in the unit sphere $(-Δ)^p u=Λ(-Δ) u$ with order $p(\geq2)$. We obtain universal bounds on the $(k+1)$th eigenvalue in terms of the first $k$th eigenvalues independent of the domains. In particular, for $p=2$, our result is sharp than estimates on eigenvalues of the buckling problem obtained by Wang and Xia.
This paper concerns obstruction flatness of hypersurfaces $Σ$ that arise as unit sphere bundles $S(E)$ of Griffiths negative Hermitian vector bundles $(E, h)$ over Kähler manifolds $(M, g).$ We prove that if the curvature of $(E, h)$ satisfies a splitting condition and $(M,g)$ has constant Ricci eigenvalues, then $S(E)$ is obstruction flat. If, in addition, all these eigenvalues are strictly less than one and $(M,g)$ is complete, then we show that the corresponding ball bundle admits a complete Kähler-Einstein metric.
We prove that for any isometric action of a group on a unit sphere of dimension larger than one, the quotient space has diameter zero or larger than a universal dimension-independent positive constant.
Let $G$ be the identity component of the isometry group for an arbitrary curved two-point homogeneous space $M$. We consider algebras of $G$-invariant differential operators on bundles of unit spheres over $M$. The generators of this algebra and the corresponding relations for them are found. The connection of these generators with two-body problem on two-point homogeneous spaces is discussed.
We construct homotopically non-trivial maps from the unit m-sphere to the unit (m-1)-sphere with arbitrarily small k-dilation for each k greater than (m + 1)/2. We prove that homotopically non-trivial maps from the unit m-sphere to the unit (m-1)-sphere cannot have arbitrarily small k-dilation for k less than or equal to (m + 1)/2.
In this note, we compute the limit of the Wang-Yau quasi-local mass on unit spheres at spatial infinity of an asymptotically flat initial data set. Similar to the small sphere limit of the Wang-Yau quasi-local mass, we prove that the leading order term of the quasi-local mass recovers the stress-energy tensor. For a vacuum spacetime, the quasi-local mass decays faster and the leading order term is related to the Bel-Robinson tensor. Several new techniques of evaluating quasilocal mass are developed in this note.
