We study the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on ellipsoids that are obtained as perturbations of the standard Euclidean unit sphere in dimension two. A comparison of these eigenvalues with those of the standard Euclidean unit sphere is obtained under a Gaussian curvature condition, in line with the Lichnerowicz theorem on the first positive eigenvalue on a compact Riemannian manifold.
We show explicit formulas for the evaluation of (possibly higher-order) fractional Laplacians of some functions supported on ellipsoids. In particular, we derive the explicit expression of the torsion function and give examples of $s$-harmonic functions. As an application, we infer that the weak maximum principle fails in eccentric ellipsoids for $s\in(1,\sqrt{3}+3/2)$ in any dimension $n\geq 2$. We build a counterexample in terms of the torsion function times a polynomial of degree 2. Using point inversion transformations, it follows that a variety of bounded and unbounded domains do not sati…
We study the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on ellipsoids. For ellipsoids that are close to the sphere, we use analytic perturbation theory to estimate the eigenvalues up to two orders. We show that for biaxial ellipsoids sufficiently close to the sphere, the first $N$ eigenvalues have multiplicity at most two, and characterize those that are simple. For the triaxial ellipsoids sufficiently close to the sphere that are not biaxial, we show that at least the first sixteen eigenvalues are all simple. We also give the results of various numerical experiments, including comparisons to o…
Existence of a conjugate point in the incompressible Euler flow on a sphere and an ellipsoid is considered. Misiolek (1996) formulated a differential-geometric criterion (we call M-criterion) for the existence of a conjugate point in a fluid flow. In this paper, it is shown that no zonal flow (stationary Euler flow) satisfies M-criterion if the background manifold is a sphere, on the other hand, there are zonal flows satisfy M-criterion if the background manifold is an ellipsoid (even it is sufficiently close to the sphere). The conjugate point is created by the fully nonlinear effect of the i…
Let $Σ$ be an oriented compact hypersurface in the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ or in the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^n$, $n\geq 3$. In the case of the torus, $Σ$ is further assumed to be contained in a contractible subset of $\mathbb{T}^n$. We show that for any sufficiently large enough odd integer $N$ there exists an eigenfunctions $ψ$ of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{T}^n$ satisfying $Δψ=-λψ$ (with $λ=N(N+n-1)$ or $N^2$ on $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{T}^n$, respectively), and with a connected component of the nodal set of $ψ$ given by~$Σ$, up to an ambient diffeomorphism.
In this paper we show novel underlying connections between fractional powers of the Laplacian on the unit sphere and functions from analytic number theory and differential geometry, like the Hurwitz zeta function and the Minakshisundaram zeta function. Inspired by Minakshisundaram's ideas, we find a precise pointwise description of $(-Δ_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}})^s u(x)$ in terms of fractional powers of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the sphere. The Poisson kernel for the unit ball will be essential for this part of the analysis. On the other hand, by using the heat semigroup on the sphere, addition…
The unit sphere $\mathbb{S}$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ is equipped with the tangential Cauchy-Riemann complex and the associated Laplacian $\Box_b$. We prove a Hörmander spectral multiplier theorem for $\Box_b$ with critical index $n-1/2$, that is, half the topological dimension of $\mathbb{S}$. Our proof is mainly based on representation theory and on a detailed analysis of the spaces of differential forms on $\mathbb{S}$.
In the articles [1] and [2] of D. Finch, M. Haltmeier, S. Patch and D. Rakesh inversion formulas were found in any dimension $n\geq2$ for recovering a smooth function with compact support in the unit ball from spherical means centered on the unit sphere. The aim of this article is to show that the methods used in [1], [2] can be modified in order to get similar inversion formulas from spherical means centered on an ellipsoid in two and three dimensional spaces.
This paper concerns the behavior of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the round sphere's Laplacian acting on the space of sections of a real line bundle which is defined on the complement of an even numbers of points in $S^2$. Of particular interest is how these eigenvalues and eigenvectors change when viewed as functions on the configuration spaces of points.
Let $\Box_b$ be the Kohn Laplacian acting on $(0,j)$-forms on the unit sphere in $\mathbb{C}^n$. In a recent paper of Casarino, Cowling, Sikora and the author, a spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type for $\Box_b$ is proved in the case $0<j<n-1$. Here we prove an analogous theorem in the exceptional cases $j=0$ and $j=n-1$, including a weak type $(1,1)$ endpoint estimate. We also show that both theorems are sharp. The proof hinges on an abstract multivariate multiplier theorem for systems of commuting operators.
We study the heat kernel of the sub-Laplacian L on the CR sphere S2n+1. An explicit and geometrically meaningful formula for the heat kernel is obtained. As a by-product we recover in a simple way the Green function of the conformal sub- Laplacian -L + n2 that was obtained by Geller [12], and also get an explicit formula for the sub-Riemannian distance. The key point is to work in a set of coordinates that reflects the symmetries coming from the fibration S2n+1 \rightarrow CPn.
We introduce n/p-harmonic maps as critical points of E(v) the Lp-Norm of the alpha-laplacian of v, where pointwise v maps Rn into a sphere, and alpha = n/p. This energy combines the non-local behaviour of the fractional harmonic maps introduced by Riviere and the first author with the degenerate arguments of the n-laplacian. In this setting, we will prove Holder continuity.
Given $(M,g)$ a smooth compact Riemannian manifold without boundary of dimension $n\geq 3$, we consider the first conformal eigenvalue which is by definition the supremum of the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian among all metrics conformal to $g$ of volume 1. We prove that it is always greater than $nω_n^{\frac{2}{n}}$, the value it takes in the conformal class of the round sphere, except if $(M,g)$ is conformally diffeomorphic to the standard sphere.
We consider the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a domain in R^d and study the effect that performing a scaling in one direction has on the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions as a function of the scaling parameter around zero. This generalizes our previous results in two dimensions and, as in that case, allows us to obtain an approximation for Dirichlet eigenvalues for a large class of domains, under very mild assumptions. As an application, we derive a three--term asymptotic expansion for the first eigenvalue of d-dimensional ellipsoids.
In this paper, we introduce a direct method of moving spheres for the nonlocal fractional Laplacian $(-\triangle)^{α/2}$ for $0<α<2$, in which a key ingredient is the narrow region maximum principle. As immediate applications, we classify the non-negative solutions for a semilinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian in $\mathbb{R}^n$; we prove a non-existence result for prescribing $Q_α$ curvature equation on $\mathbb{S}^n$; then by combining the direct method of moving planes and moving spheres, we establish a Liouville type theorem on the half Euclidean space. We expect to see more …
This paper is devoted to the asymptotic analysis of a fractional version of the Ginzburg-Landau equation in bounded domains, where the Laplacian is replaced by an integro-differential operator related to the square root Laplacian as defined in Fourier space. In the singular Ginzburg-Landau limit, we show that solutions with uniformly bounded energy converge weakly to sphere valued 1/2-harmonic maps, i.e., the fractional analogues of the usual harmonic maps. In addition, the convergence holds in smooth functions spaces away from a (n-1)-rectifiable closed set of finite (n-1)-Hausdorff measure. …
We prove upper bounds on the $L^p$ norms of eigenfunctions of the discrete Laplacian on regular graphs. We then apply these ideas to study the $L^p$ norms of joint eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and an averaging operator over a finite collection of algebraic rotations of the $2$-sphere. Under mild conditions, such joint eigenfunctions are shown to satisfy for large $p$ the same bounds as those known for Laplace eigenfunctions on a surface of non-positive curvature.
Removing al least one point from the unit sphere in $ R^{3}$ allows to factorize the angular part of the laplacian with a Cauchy-Riemann type operator. Solutions to this operator define a complex algebra of potential functions. A family of these solutions is shown to be normalizable on the sphere so it is possible to construct associate solutions for every radial solution to the time-independant Schrödinger equation with a radial potential, such that this family of solutions is square integrable in $R^{3}$. While this family of associated solutions are singular on at least one half-plane, they…
We consider a boundary value problem for the $p$-Laplacian, posed in the exterior of small cavities that all have the same $p$-capacity and are anchored to the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $1<p<d.$ We assume that the distance between anchoring points is at least $\varepsilon$ and the characteristic diameter of cavities is $α\varepsilon$, where $α=α(\varepsilon)$ tends to 0 with $\varepsilon$. We also assume that anchoring points are asymptotically uniformly distributed as $\varepsilon \downarrow 0$, and their number is asymptotic to a positive constant times $\varepsilon^{1-d}$. The so…
