Many known results on finite von Neumann algebras are generalized, by purely algebraic proofs, to a certain class ${\mathcal C}$ of finite Baer *-rings. The results in this paper can also be viewed as a study of the properties of Baer *-rings in the class ${\mathcal C}$.
First, we show that a finitely generated module over a ring from the class ${\mathcal C}$ splits as a direct sum of a finitely generated projective module and a certain torsion module. Then, we define the dimension of any module over a ring from ${\mathcal C}$ and prove that this dimension has all the nice properties of the dimension studied in [W. Lück, Dimension theory of arbitrary modules over finite von Neumann algebras and $L^2$-Betti numbers I: Foundations, J. Reine Angew. Math. 495 (1998) 135--162] for finite von Neumann algebras. This dimension defines a torsion theory that we prove to be equal to the Goldie and Lambek torsion theories. Moreover, every finitely generated module splits in this torsion theory.
If $R$ is a ring in ${\mathcal C},$ we can embed it in a canonical way into a regular ring $Q$ also in ${\mathcal C}.$ We show that $K_0(R)$ is isomorphic to $K_0(Q)$ by producing an explicit isomorphism and its inverse of monoids Proj$ (P)\to$ Proj$ (Q)$ that extends to the isomorphism of $K_0(R)$ and $K_0(Q)$.
We show a general decomposition theorem in Baer *-rings. As a consequence the vast majority of decompositions known in the algebra of bounded Hilbert space operators are generalized to Baer *-rings. There are also results which are new in the algebra of bounded Hilbert space operators. The model of summands in Wold-Słociński decomposition in Baer *-rings is given.
Class of Baer *-rings Defined by a Relaxed Set of Axioms
本文考虑Baer *-环的一类${\mathcal C}$(在[S. K. Berberian,Baer *-rings,Die Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften 195,Springer-Verlag,Berlin-Heidelberg-New York,1972.]和[L. Vasperson,Dimension and Torsion Theories for a Class of Baer *-Rings,Journal of Algebra 289(2005)no.2,614- 639])由九个公理定义,其中最后两个公理特别强。我们证明了第九条公理是由前七条公理推导而来的。这对S的问题给出了肯定的回答。K. Berberian如果一个Baer *-环$R$满足前七个公理,那么矩阵环$M_n(R)$是Baer *-环吗?
In this paper, we study module theoretic definitions of the Baer and related ring concepts. We say a module is s.Baer if the right annihilator of a nonempty subset of the module is generated by an idempotent in the ring. We show that s.Baer modules satisfy a number of closure properties. Under certain conditions, a torsion theory is established for the s.Baer modules, and we provide examples of s.Baer torsion modules and modules with a nonzero s.Baer radical. The other principal interest of this paper is to provide explicit connections between s.Baer modules and projective modules. Among other…
We provide a variant of Baer's theorem about isomorphism of endomorphism rings of vector spaces over division rings, where the full endomorphism rings are replaced by some subrings of finitary maps.
Let $R$ be a ring. It is proved that an $R$-module $M$ is Baer (resp. dual Baer) if and only if every exact sequence $0\rightarrow X\rightarrow M\rightarrow Y\rightarrow 0$ with $Y\in$ Cog$(M_R)$ (resp. $X\in$ Gen$(M_R)$) splits. This shows that being (dual) Baer is a Morita invariant property. As more applications, the Baer condition for the $R$-module $M^+ $ = Hom$_{\Bbb Z}(M,{\Bbb Q}/{\Bbb Z})$ is investigated and shown that $R$ is a von Neumann regular ring, if $R^+$ is a Baer $R$-module. Baer modules with (weak) chain conditions are studied and determined when a Baer (resp. dual baer) mod…
The Schröder-Bernstein Theorem for sets is well known. The question of whether two subisomorphic algebraic structures are isomorphic to each other, is of interest. An $R$-module $M$ is said to satisfy the Schröder-Bernstein (or SB) property if any pair of direct summands of $M$ are isomorphic provided that each one is isomorphic to a direct summand of the other. A ring $R$ (with an involution $\star$) is called a Baer (Baer $\star$-)ring if the right annihilator of every nonempty subset of $R$ is generated by an idempotent (a projection). It is clear that every Baer $\star$-ring is a Baer ring…
A ring is clean (resp. almost clean) if each of its elements is the sum of a unit (resp. regular element) and an idempotent. In this paper we define the analogous notion for *-rings: a *-ring is *-clean (resp. almost *-clean) if its every element is the sum of a unit (resp. regular element) and a projection. Although *-clean is a stronger notion than clean, for some *-rings we demonstrate that it is more natural to use. The theorem on cleanness of unit-regular rings from [V. P. Camillo, D. Khurana, A Characterization of Unit Regular Rings, Communications in Algebra, 29 (5) (2001) 2293-2295] is…
We prove that p.q.-Baer *-ring forms a pseudo lattice with Conrads partial order and also characterize p.q.-Baer *-rings which are lattices. The initial segments of a p.q.-Baer *-ring with Conrads partial order are shown to be orthomodular posets.
In this paper, we transfer Davey`s characterization for $κ$--Stone bounded distributive lattices to lattices with certain kinds of quotients, in particular to commutator lattices with certain properties, and obtain related results on prime, radical, complemented and compact elements, annihilators and congruences of these lattices. We then apply these results to certain congruence lattices, in particular to those of semiprime members of semi--degenerate congruence--modular varieties, and use this particular case to transfer Davey`s Theorem to commutative unitary rings.
In this paper, we introduce a concept of weakly principally quasi-Baer *-rings in terms of central cover. We prove that a *-rings is a principally quasi-Baer *-rings if and only if it is weakly principally quasi-Baer *-rings with unity. A partial solution to the problem similar to unitification problem raised by S. K. Berberian is obtained.
For a given class of R-modules Q, a module M is called Q-copure Baer injective if any map from a Q-copure left ideal of R into M can be extended to a map from R into M. Depending on the class Q, this concept is both a dualization and a generalization of pure Baer injectivity. We show that every module can be embedded as Q-copure submodule of a Q-copure Baer injective module. Certain types of rings are characterized using properties of Q-copure Baer injective modules. For example a ring R is Q-coregular if and only if every Q-copure Baer injective R-module is injective.
We introduce the notions of t-lifting modules and t-dual Baer modules, which are generalizations of lifting modules. It is shown that an amply supplemented module $M$ is t-lifting if and only if $M$ is t-dual Baer and a t-$\mathcal{K}$-module. We also prove that, over a right perfect ring $R$, every noncosingular $R$-module is injective if and only if every $R$-module is t-dual Baer if and only if every $R$-module is t-lifting if and only if every injective $R$-module is t-lifting.
The aim of this paper is to investigate a general notion of $σ$-PBW extensions over Armendariz rings. As an application, the properties of being Baer, quasi-Baer, p.p. and p.q.-Baer are established for these extensions. We generalize several results in the literature for Ore extensions of injective type and skew PBW extensions.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of $Σ$-semicommutative ring, for $Σ$ a finite family of endomorphisms of a ring $R$. We relate this class of rings with other classes of rings such that Abelian, reduced, $Σ$-rigid, nil-reversible and rings satisfying the $Σ$-skew reflexive nilpotent property. Also, we study some ring-theoretical properties of skew PBW extensions over $Σ$-semicommutative rings. We prove that if a ring $R$ is $Σ$-semicommutative with certain conditions of compatibility on derivations, then for every skew PBW extension $A$ over $R$, $R$ is Baer if and only if $R$ is quasi-…
It is shown that the Baer-Kaplansky theorem can be extended to all abelian groups provided that the rings of endomorphisms of groups are replaced by trusses of endomorphisms of corresponding heaps. That is, every abelian group is determined up to isomorphism by its endomorphism truss and every isomorphism between two endomorphism trusses associated to some abelian groups $G$ and $H$ is induced by an isomorphism between $G$ and $H$ and an element from $H$. This correspondence is then extended to all modules over a ring by considering heaps of modules. It is proved that the truss of endomorphism…
The existence of a well-behaved dimension of a finite von Neumann algebra (see [19]) has lead to the study of such a dimension of finite Baer *-rings (see [26]) that satisfy certain *-ring axioms (used in [9]). This dimension is closely related to the equivalence relation $\sim^{*}$ on projections defined by $p\sim^{*} q$ iff $p=xx^*$ and $q=x^*x$ for some $x.$ However, the equivalence $\sim^{a}$ on projections (or, in general, idempotents) defined by $p\sim^{a} q$ iff $p=xy$ and $q=yx$ for some $x$ and $y,$ can also be relevant. There were attempts to unify the two approaches (see [10]). In t…
We consider some existing results regarding rings for which the classes of torsion-free and non-singular right modules coincide. Here, a right $R$-module $M$ is non-singular if $xI$ is nonzero for every nonzero $x \in M$ and every essential right ideal $I$ of $R$, and a right $R$-module $M$ is torsion-free if $Tor_{1}^{R}(M,R / Rr)=0$ for every $r \in R$. In particular, we consider a ring $R$ for which the classes of torsion-free and non-singular right $S$-modules coincide for every ring $S$ Morita-equivalent to $R$. We make use of these results, as well as the existence of a Morita-equivalenc…
The purpose of this note is to describe when a general complex algebraic $^*$-algebra is pre-$C^*$-normed, and to investigate their structure when the $^*$-algebras are Baer $^*$-rings in addition to algebraicity. As a main result we prove the following theorem for complex algebraic Baer $^*$-algebras: every $^*$-algebra of this kind can be decomposed as a direct sum $M\oplus B$, where $M$ is a finite dimensional Baer $^*$-algebra and $B$ is a commutative algebraic Baer $^*$-algebra. The summand $M$ is $^*$-isomorphic to a finite direct sum of full complex matrix algebras of size at least $2\t…
In this work we attempt to generalize our result in [6] [7] for real rings (not just von Neumann regular real rings). In other words we attempt to characterize and construct real closure * of commutative unitary rings that are real. We also make some very interesting and significant discoveries regarding maximal partial orderings of rings, Baer rings and essentail extension of rings. The first Theorem itself gives us a noteworthy bijection between maximal partial orderings of two rings by which one is a rational extension of the other. We characterize conditions when a Baer reduced ring can be…
Let n be an arbitrary natural number. The class of (strongly) n-torsion clean rings is introduced and investigated. Abelian n-torsion clean rings are somewhat characterized and a complete characterization of strongly n-torsion clean rings is given in the case when n is odd. Some open questions are posed at the end.
It is proved that centrally essential rings, whose additive groups of finite rank are torsion-free groups of finite rank, are quasi-invariant but not necessarily invariant. Torsion-free Abelian groups of finite rank with centrally essential endomorphism rings are faithful. The paper will appear in Beiträge zur Algebra und Geometrie / Contributions to Algebra and Geometry.
We completely determine those natural numbers $n$ for which the full matrix ring $M_n(F_2)$ and the triangular matrix ring $T_n(F_2)$ over the two elements field $F_2$ are either n-torsion clean or are almost n-torsion clean, respectively. These results somewhat address and settle a question, recently posed by Danchev-Matczuk in Contemp. Math. (2019) as well as they supply in a more precise aspect the nil-cleanness property of the full matrix $n\times n$ ring $M_n(F_2)$ for all naturals $n \geq 1$, established in Linear Algebra and Appl. (2013) by Breaz-Calugareanu-Danchev-Micu and again in Li…
In this paper, we introduce the concept of centrally endo-AIP modules. We call a module M centrally endo-AIP, if the left annihilator of any fully invariant submodule N of M in the endomorphism ring S = End(M) is a centrally s-unital ideal of S. We discuss some properties of centrally endo-AIP modules. We also study the endomorphism ring of centrally endo-AIP modules and characterize quasi-Baer modules in terms of centrally endo-AIP modules
For $c\geq 2$, the free centre-by-(nilpotent-of-class-c-1)-by abelian Lie ring on a set $X$ is the quotient $L/[(L')^c,L]$ where $L$ is the free Lie ring on $X$, and $(L')^c$ denotes the $c$th term of the lower central series of the derived ideal $L'=L^2$ of $L$. In this paper we give a complete description of the torsion subgroup of its additive group in the case where $|X|=2$ and $c$ is a prime number.
Let M be a fixed left R-module. For a left R-module X, we introduce the notion of M-prime (resp. M-semiprime) submodule of X such that in the case M=R, which coincides with prime (resp. semiprime) submodule of X. Other concepts encountered in the general theory are M-m-system sets, M-n-system sets, M-prime radical and M-Baer's lower nilradical of modules. Relationships between these concepts and basic properties are established. In particular, we identify certain submodules of M, called "prime M-ideals", that play a role analogous to that of prime (two-sided) ideals in the ring R. Using this d…
We study the notion of Rickart property in a general module theoretic setting as a generalization to the concept of Baer modules and right Rickart rings. A module $M_{R}$ is called Rickart if the right annihilator in $M_{R}$ of each left principal ideal of $End_{R}(M)$ is generated by an idempotent. Characterizations of Rickart modules are given. We give sufficient conditions for direct sums of Rickart modules to be Rickart. We extend some useful results of right Rickart rings to the theory of Rickart modules.
A torsion theoretical characterization of left Noetherian rings $R$ over which injective hulls of simple left modules are locally Artinian is given. Sufficient conditions for a left Noetherian ring to satisfy this finiteness condition are obtained in terms of torsion theories.
Let $R$ be a commutative unital ring and $a\in R.$ We introduce and study properties of a functor $aΓ_{a}(-),$ called the locally nilradical on the category of $R$-modules. $aΓ_{a}(-)$ is a generalisation of both the torsion functor (also called section functor) and Baer's lower nilradical for modules. Several local-global properties of the functor $aΓ_{a}(-)$ are established. As an application, results about reduced $R$-modules are obtained and hitherto unknown ring theoretic radicals as well as structural theorems are deduced.
In this work we introduce a new concept, namely, $τ_{s}$-extending modules (rings) which is torsion-theoretic analogues of extending modules and then we extend many results from extending modules to this new concept. For instance we show that for any ring $R$ with unit, if $R$ is purely $τ_{s}$-extending then every cyclic $τ$-nonsingular $R$-module is flat and we show that this fact is true over a principal ideal domain as well. Also, we make a classification for the direct sums of the rings to be purely $τ_{s}$-extending.
We study Abelian groups $A$ with centrally essential endomorphism ring $\text{End}\,A$. If $A$ is a such group which is either a torsion group or a non-reduced group, then the ring $\text{End}\,A$ is commutative. We give examples of Abelian torsion-free groups of finite rank with non-commutative centrally essential endomorphism rings. The paper will appear in Communications in Algebra.
H. J. Zassenhaus conjectured that any unit of finite order and augmentation one in the integral group ring of a finite group $G$ is conjugate in the rational group algebra to an element of $G$. One way to verify this is showing that such unit has the same distribution of partial augmentations as an element of $G$ and the HeLP Method provides a tool to do that in some cases. In this paper we use the HeLP Method to describe the partial augmentations of a hypothetical counterexample to the conjecture for the projective special linear groups.
In the class of reduced Abelian torsion-free groups $G$ of finite rank, we describe TI-groups, this means that every associative ring on $G$ is filial. If every associative multiplication on $G$ is the zero multiplication, then $G$ is called a $nil_a$-group. It is proved that a reduced Abelian torsion-free group $G$ of finite rank is a $TI$-group if and only if $G$ is a homogeneous Murley group or $G$ is a $nil_a$-group. We also study the interrelations between the class of homogeneous Murley groups and the class of $nil_a$-groups. For any type $t\ne (\infty,\infty,\ldots)$ and every integer $…
In this paper, we describe all automorphism-liftable torsion modules over non-primitive hereditary Noetherian prime rings. We also study automorphism-liftable non-torsion modules over not necessarily commutative Dedekind prime rings
Using the Luthar--Passi method, we investigate the possible orders and partial augmentations of torsion units of the normalized unit group of integral group rings of Conway simple groups $Co_1$, $Co_2$ and $Co_3$.
Let $R$ be an arbitrary ring with identity and $M$ a right $R$-module with $S=$ End$_R(M)$. Let $Z_2(M)$ be the second singular submodule of $M$. In this paper, we define Goldie Rickart modules by utilizing the endomorphisms of a module. The module $M$ is called Goldie Rickart if for any $f\in S$, $f^{-1}(Z_2(M))$ is a direct summand of $M$. We provide several characterizations of Goldie Rickart modules and study their properties. Also we present that semisimple rings and right $Σ$-$t$-extending rings admit some characterizations in terms of Goldie Rickart modules.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic different from $2$ and let $G$ be a nonabelian residually torsion-free nilpotent group. It is known that $G$ is an orderable group. Let $k(G)$ denote the subdivision ring of the Malcev-Neumann series ring generated by the group algebra of $G$ over $k$. If $\ast$ is an involution on $G$, then it extends to a unique $k$-involution on $k(G)$. We show that $k(G)$ contains pairs of symmetric elements with respect to $\ast$ which generate a free group inside the multiplicative group of $k(G)$. Free unitary pairs also exist if $G$ is torsion-free nilpotent. Finall…
For a finite group $G$, let $\tilde{\mathbb{Z}}$ be the semilocalization of $\mathbb{Z}$ at the prime divisors of $|G|$. If $G$ is a Frobenius group with Frobenius kernel $K$, it is shown that each torsion unit in the group ring $\tilde{\mathbb{Z}} G$ which maps to the identity under the natural ring homomorphism $\tilde{\mathbb{Z}} G \rightarrow \tilde{\mathbb{Z}} G/K$ is conjugate to an element of $G$ by a unit in $\tilde{\mathbb{Z}} G$.
It is known that every nonzero Jordan ideal of $2$-torsion free semiprime rings contains a nonzero ideal. In this paper we show that also any square closed Lie ideal of a $2$-torsion free prime ring contains a nonzero ideal. This can be interpreted by saying that studying identities over one sided ideals is the "optimal" case to study identities. With this fact in mind, we generalize some results of Dhara, Rehman and Raza in [Lie ideals and action of generalized derivations in rings, Miskolc Mathematical Notes, \textbf{16} (2015), 769 -- 779] to the context of nonzero left ideals.
We study the notions of $n$-hereditary rings and its connection to the classes of finitely $n$-presented modules, FP$_n$-injective modules, FP$_n$-flat modules and $n$-coherent rings. We give characterizations of $n$-hereditary rings in terms of quotients of injective modules and submodules of flat modules, and a characterization of $n$-coherent using an injective cogenerator of the category of modules. We show two torsion pairs with respect to the FP$_n$-injective modules and the FP$_n$-flat modules over $n$-hereditary rings. We also provide an example of a Bézout ring which is 2-hereditary, …
