In this paper we explicitly construct Moishezon twistor spaces on nCP^2 for arbitrary n>1 which admit a holomorphic C*-action. When n=2, they coincide with Y. Poon's twistor spaces. When n=3, they coincide with the one studied by the author in math.DG/0403528. When n>3, they are new twistor spaces, to the best of the author's knowledge. By investigating the anticanonical system, we show that our twistor spaces are bimeromorphic to conic bundles over certain rational surfaces. The latter surfaces can be regarded as orbit spaces of the C*-action on the twistor spaces. Namely they are minitwistor spaces. We explicitly determine their defining equations in CP^4. It turns out that the structure of the minitwistor space is independent of n. Further we concrelely construct a CP^2-bundle over the resolution of this surface, and provide an explicit defining equation of the conic bundles. It shows that the number of irreducible components of the discriminant locus for the conic bundles increases as n does. Thus our twistor spaces have a lot of similarities with the famous LeBrun twistor spaces, where the minitwistor space CP^1 x CP^1 in LeBrun's case is replaced by our minitwistor spaces found in math.DG/0508088.
In this paper we provide a classification of all Moishezon twistor spaces on the connected sum of four complex projective planes. This is given by means of the anticanonical system of the twistor spaces. In particular, we show that the anticanonical map is birational, two to one over the image, or otherwise the image of the anticanonical map is a rational surface. We also obtain the structure of the images of the anticanonical map in each of the three cases in explicit forms.
In this paper we investigate a family of Moishezon twistor spaces on the connected sum of 4 complex projective planes, which can be regarded as a direct generalization of the twistor spaces on 3CP^2 of double solid type studied by Poon and Kreussler-Kurke. These twistor spaces have a natural structure of double covering over a scroll of 2-planes over a conic. We determine the defining equations of the branch divisors in an explicit form, which are very similar to the case of 3CP^2. Using these explicit description we compute the dimension of the moduli spaces of these twistor spaces. Also we o…
In this paper we classify all Moishezon twistor spaces on 4CP^2. The classification is given in terms of the structure of the anticanonical system of the twistor spaces. We show that the anticanonical map satisfies one of the following three properties: (a) birational over the image, (b) two to one over the image, or (c) the image is two-dimensional. We determine structure of the images for each case in explicit forms. Then we intensively investigate structure of the twistor spaces in the case (b), and determine the defining equation of the branch divisor of the anticanonical map.
We continue to study twistor spaces on the connected sum of four complex projective planes, whose anticanonical map is of degree two over the image. In particular, we determine the defining equation of the branch divisor of the anticanonical map in an explicit form. Together with previous two articles (arXiv:1009.3153 and arXiv:0705.0060), this completes explicit description of all such twistor spaces.
We study real lines on certain Moishezon threefolds which are potentially twistor spaces of 3CP^2. Here, line means a smooth rational curve whose normal bundle is O(1)^2 and the reality implies the invariance under an anti-holomorphic involution on the threefolds. Our threefolds are birational to double coverings of CP^3 branched along singular quartic surfaces. On these threefolds we find families of real lines in explicit form and prove that which families have to be chosen as twistor lines depend on how we take small resolutions of the double covering. This is a first step for determining t…
In recent papers math.DG/0701278 and arXiv:0705.0060, we gave explicit description of some new Moishezon twistor spaces. In this paper, developing the method in the papers much further, we explicitly give projective models of a number of new Moishezon twistor spaces, as conic bundles over some rational surfaces (called minitwistor spaces). These include the twistor spaces studied in the papers as very special cases. Our source of the result is a series of self-dual metrics with torus action constructed by D. Joyce. Actually, for arbitrary Joyce metrics and U(1)-subgroups of the torus which fix…
We investigate the structure of a variety of new Moishezon twistor spaces, by utilizing the pluri-half-anti-canonical map from the twistor spaces. Each of these twistor spaces is bimeromorphic to a double covering of a scroll of planes over a rational normal curve, and the branch divisor of the double cover is a cut of the scroll by a quartic hypersurface. In particular, the double covering has a pencil of Del Pezzo surfaces of degree two. Correspondingly, the twistor spaces have a pencil of rational surfaces with big anti-canonical class. The base locus of the last pencil is a cycle of ration…
In a recent paper (math.DG/0701278) we constructed a series of new Moishezon twistor spaces which is a kind of variant of the famous LeBrun twistor spaces. In this paper we explicitly give projective models of another series of Moishezon twistor spaces on nCP^2 for arbitrary n>2, which can be regarded as a generalization of the twistor spaces of a 'double solid type' on 3CP^2 studied by Kreussler, Kurke, Poon and the author. Similarly to the twistor spaces of 'double solid type' on 3CP^2, projective models of present twistor spaces have a natural structure of double covering of a CP^2-bundle o…
Let $S$ be a smooth rational curve on a complex manifold $M$. It is called ample if its normal bundle is positive. We assume that $M$ is covered by smooth holomorphic deformations of $S$. The basic example of such a manifold is a twistor space of a hyperkahler or a 4-dimensional anti-selfdual Riemannian manifold $X$ (not necessarily compact). We prove "a holography principle" for such a manifold: any meromorphic function defined in a neighbourhood $U$ of $S$ can be extended to $M$, and any section of a holomorphic line bundle can be extended from $U$ to $M$. This is used to define the notion o…
We study the algebraic dimension of twistor spaces of positive type over $4\bbfP^2$. We show that such a twistor space is Moishezon if and only if its anticanonical class is not nef. More precisely, we show the equivalence of being Moishezon with the existence of a smooth rational curve having negative intersection number with the anticanonical class. Furthermore, we give precise information on the dimension and base locus of the fundamental linear system $|{-1/2}K|$. This implies, for example, $\dim|{-1/2}K|\leq a(Z)$. We characterize those twistor spaces over $4\bbfP^2$, which contain a penc…
In this paper we investigate Moishezon twistor spaces which have a structure of double covering over a very simple rational threefold. These spaces can be regarded as a direct generalization of the twistor spaces studied by Poon and Kreussler-Kurke to the case of arbitrary signature. In particular, the branch divisor of the double covering is a cut of the rational threefold by a single quartic hypersurface. A defining equation of the hypersurface is determined in an explicit form. We also show that these twistor spaces interpolate LeBrun twistor spaces and the twistor spaces constructed in mat…
In a paper (math.DG/0403528) we obtained explicit examples of Moishezon twistor spaces of some compact self-dual four-manifolds admitting a non-trivial Killing field, and also determined their moduli space. In this note we investigate minitwistor spaces associated to these twistor spaces. We determine their structure, minitwistor lines and also their moduli space, by using a double covering structure of the twistor spaces. In particular, we find that these minitwistor spaces have different properties in many respects, compared to known examples of minitwistor spaces. Especially, we show that t…
We explicitly construct the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics with torus action that are not treated in Part I (math.DG/0603242). This finishes a construction of all the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics on the connected sum of four complex projective planes.
We provide a simple algebraic construction of the twistor spaces of arbitrary Joyce's self-dual metrics on the 4-manifold H^2 x T^2 that extend smoothly to nCP^2, the connected sum of complex projective planes. Indeed, we explicitly realize projective models of the twistor spaces of arbitrary Joyce metrics on nCP^2 in a CP^4-bundle over CP^1, and show that they contain the twistor spaces of H^2 x T^2 as dense non-Zariski open subsets. In particular, we see that the last non-compact twistor spaces can be realized in rank-4 vector bundles over CP^1 by quite simple defining equations.
We show that the algebraic dimension of a twistor space over n#CP^2 cannot be two if n>4 and the fundamental system (i.e. the linear system associated to the half-anti-canonical bundle, which is available on any twistor space) is a pencil. This means that if the algebraic dimension of a twistor space on n#CP^2, n>4, is two, then the fundamental system either is empty or consists of a single member. The existence problem for a twistor space on n#CP^2 with algebraic dimension two is open for n>4.
It is shown that there exists a twistor space on the $n$-fold connected sum of complex projective planes $n\mathbb{CP}^2$, whose algebraic dimension is one and whose general fiber of the algebraic reduction is birational to an elliptic ruled surface or a K3 surface. The former kind of twistor spaces are constructed over $n\mathbb{CP}^2$ for any $n\ge 5$, while the latter kind of example is constructed over $5\mathbb{CP}^2$. Both of these seem to be the first such example on $n\mathbb{CP}^2$. The algebraic reduction in these examples is induced by the anti-canonical system of the twistor spaces…
In 1995 D. Joyce explicitly constructed a series of self-dual metrics with torus action on the connected sums of complex projective planes. In this paper we explicitly construct the twistor spaces of some of Joyce's self-dual metrics. Starting from a fiber space whose fibers are compact singular toric surfaces, we apply a number of birational transformations to obtain the required twistor spaces. In the construction an important role is played by flops, a useful operation in algebraic geometry.
We show that the moduli space $M$ of holomorphic vector bundles on $CP^3$ that are trivial along a line is isomorphic (as a complex manifold) to a subvariety in the moduli of rational curves of the twistor space of the moduli space of framed instantons on $\R^4$, called the space of twistor sections. We then use this characterization to prove that $M$ is equipped with a torsion-free affine connection with holonomy in $Sp(2n,\C)$.
In this expository paper we review some twistor techniques and recall the problem of finding compact differentiable manifolds that can carry both Kähler and non-Kähler complex structures. Such examples were constructed independently by M. Atiyah, A. Blanchard and E. Calabi in the $1950$'s. In the $1980$'s V. Tsanov gave an example of a simply connected manifold that admits both Kähler and non-Kähler complex structures - the twistor space of a $K3$ surface. Here we show that the quaternion twistor space of a hyperkähler manifold has the same property.
We construct an explicit example of a stable bundle on the twistor space $\mathrm{Tw}(M)$ of a hyperkähler manifold $M$ whose restrictions to all the fibres of the natural twistor projection $π: \mathrm{Tw}(M) \to \mathbb{CP}^1$ are nonstable. We also describe the relationship between bundles on $\mathrm{Tw}(M)$ that do not have subsheaves of strictly lower rank and bundles that stably restrict to the fibres of $π$, and announce a result whose proof will appear in a forthcoming paper.
Given a holomorphic principal bundle $Q\, \longrightarrow\, X$, the universal space of holomorphic connections is a torsor $C_1(Q)$ for $\text{ad} Q \otimes T^*X$ such that the pullback of $Q$ to $C_1(Q)$ has a tautological holomorphic connection. When $X\,=\, G/P$, where $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of a complex simple group $G$, and $Q$ is the frame bundle of an ample line bundle, we show that $C_1(Q)$ may be identified with $G/L$, where $L\, \subset\, P$ is a Levi factor. We use this identification to construct the twistor space associated to a natural hyper-Kähler metric on $T^*(G/P)$, reco…
Let $M$ be a quaternionic manifold, $\dim M=4k$, whose twistor space is a Fano manifold. We prove the following: (a) $M$ admits a reduction to $Sp(1) \times GL(k,H)$ if and only if $M=HP^k$, (b) either $b_2(M)=0$ or $M=Gr_2(k+2,C)$. This generalizes results of S. Salamon and C.R. LeBrun, respectively, who obtained the same conclusions under the assumption that $M$ is a complete quaternionic-Kaehler manifold with positive scalar curvature.
We compute the hessian of the natural Hermitian form successively on the Calabi family of a hyperkähler manifold, on the twistor space of a 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Riemannian manifold and on the twistor space of a quaternionic Kähler manifold. We show a strong convexity property of the cycle space of twistor lines on the Calabi family of a hyperkähler manifold. We also prove convexity properties of the 1-cycle space of the twistor space of a 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Einstein manifold of non-positive scalar curvature and of the 1-cycle space of the twistor space of a quaternionic Kähle…
A Hermitian metric $ω$ on a complex manifold is called SKT or pluriclosed if $dd^cω=0$. Let M be a twistor space of a compact, anti-selfdual Riemannian manifold, admitting a pluriclosed Hermitian metric. We prove that in this case M is Kähler, hence isomorphic to $\C P^3$ or a flag space. This result is obtained from rational connectedness of the twistor space, due to F. Campana. As an aside, we prove that the moduli space of rational curves on the twistor space of a K3 surface is Stein.
Let $M$ be a hyperkaehler manifold, and $η$ a closed, positive (1,1)-form which is degenerate everywhere on $M$. We associate to $η$ a family of complex structures on $M$, called a degenerate twistor family, and parametrized by a complex line. When $η$ is a pullback of a Kaehler form under a Lagrangian fibration $L$, all the fibers of degenerate twistor family also admit a Lagrangian fibration, with the fibers isomorphic to that of $L$. Degenerate twistor families can be obtained by taking limits of twistor families, as one of the Kahler forms in the hyperkahler triple goes to $η$.
In contrast to the classical twistor spaces whose fibres are 2-spheres, we introduce twistor spaces over manifolds with almost quaternionic structures of the second kind in the sense of P. Libermann whose fibres are hyperbolic planes. We discuss two natural almost complex structures on such a twistor space and their holomorphic functions.
We introduce integrable complex structures on twistor spaces fibered over complex manifolds. We then show, in particular, that the twistor spaces associated with generalized Kahler, SKT and strong HKT manifolds all naturally admit complex structures. Moreover, in the strong HKT case we construct a metric and three compatible complex structures on the twistor space that have equal torsions.
For the twistor spaces of the Bochner-Kähler manifold $M = H^l \times P^n$, systems of holomorphic coordinates are constructed. As an application of them, an explicit description of the moduli space of relative deformations of fibers of $M$'s twistor space is given.
In this paper we introduce the twistor space of a Riemannian manifold with an even Clifford structure. This notion generalizes the twistor space of quaternion-Hermitian manifolds and weak-Spin(9) structures. We also construct almost complex structures on the twistor space for parallel even Clifford structures and check their integrability. Moreover, we prove that in some cases one can give Kähler and Nearly-Kähler metrics to these spaces.
We explicitly describe all SO(7)-invariant almost quaternion-Hermitian structures on the twistor space of the six sphere and determine the types of their intrinsic torsion.
In this paper we determine the Gray-Hervella classes of the compatible almost complex structures on the twistor spaces of oriented Riemannian four-manifolds considered by G. Deschamps
We investigate the twistor space and the Grassmannian fibre bundle of a Lorentzian 4-space with natural almost optical structures and its induced CR-structures. The twistor spaces of the Lorentzian space forms $\R^4_1, \Di{S}^4_1$ and $\Di{H}^4_1$ are explicitly discussed. The given twistor construction is applied to surface theory in Lorentzian 4-spaces. Immersed spacelike surfaces in a Lorentzian 4-space with special geometric properties like semi-umbilic surfaces and surfaces that have mean curvature of vanishing lengths correspond to holomorphic curves in the Lorentzian twistor space. For …
We deal here with the geometry of the twistor fibration $\mathcal{Z} \to \bb{S}^3_1$ over the De Sitter 3-space. The total space $\mathcal{Z}$ is a five dimensional reductive homogeneous space with two canonical invariant almost CR structures. Fixed the normal metric on $\mathcal{Z}$ we study the harmonic map equation for smooth maps of Riemann surfaces into $\mathcal{Z}$. A characterization of spacelike surfaces with harmonic twistor lifts to $\mathcal{Z}$ is obtained. It is also shown that the harmonic map equation for twistor lifts can be formulated as the curvature vanishing of an $\bb{S}^…
In this paper, we provide a correspondence between certain 5-dimensional complex spacetimes and 4-dimensional twistor spaces. The spacetimes are almost contact manifolds whose curvature tensor satisfies certain conditions. By using the correspondence, we show that a 5-dimensional K-contact manifold can be obtained from the Ren-Wang twistor space, which is obtained from two copies of \C^4 identifying open subsets by a holomorphic map. From this result, the Ren-Wang twistor space can be interpreted in the framework of Itoh.
The theory of twistors on foliated manifolds is developed and the twistor space of the normal bundle is constructed. It is demonstrated that the classical constructions of the twistor theory lead to foliated objects and permit to formulate and prove foliated versions of some well-known results on holomorphic mappings. Since any orbifold can be understood as the leaf space of a suitable defined Riemannian foliation we obtain orbifold versions of the classical results as a simple consequence of the results on foliated mappings.
The twistor construction for Riemannian manifolds is extended to the case of manifolds endowed with generalized metrics (in the sense of generalized geometry à la Hitchin). The generalized twistor space associated to such a manifold is defined as the bundle of generalized complex structures on the tangent spaces of the manifold compatible with the given generalized metric. This space admits natural generalized almost complex structures whose integrability conditions are found in the paper. An interesting feature of the generalized twistor spaces discussed in it is the existence of intrinsic is…
In this paper a bijective correspondence between superminimal surfaces of an oriented Riemannian $4$-manifold and particular Lagrangian submanifolds of the twistor space over the $4$-manifold is proven. More explicitly, for every superminimal surface a submanifold of the twistor space is constructed which is Lagrangian for all the natural almost Hermitian structures on the twistor space. The twistor fibration restricted to the constructed Lagrangian gives a circle bundle over the superminimal surface. Conversely, if a submanifold of the twistor space is Lagrangian for all the natural almost He…
In this paper we review some results on the Riemannian and almost Hermitian geometry of twistor spaces of oriented Riemannian $4$-manifolds with emphasis on their curvature properties.
In this note, we prove that the CR manifold which is induced from the canonical parabolic geometry of a quaternionic contact (qc) manifold via a Fefferman-type construction is equivalent to the CR twistor space of the qc manifold defined by O. Biquard.
We characterize HKT structure in terms of nondegenrate complex Poisson bivector on hypercomplex manifold. We extend the characterization to the twistor space. After considering the flat case in detail, we show that the twistor space of hyperkaehler manifold admits a holomorphic Poisson structure. We briefly mention the relation to quaternionic and hypercomplex deformations on tori and K3 surfaces
The twistor construction is applied for obtaining examples of generalized complex structures (in the sense of N. Hitchin) that are not induced by a complex or a symplectic structure.
We show that a 1-parameter family Ricci flow ancient solutions arises from the natural collapsings of the twistor space of positive quaternion Kähler manifolds. We use these ancient solutions to show that a positive quaternion Kähler manifold is isometric to one of the Wolf spaces.
We describe the relation between supersymmetric sigma-models on hyperkahler manifolds, projective superspace, and twistor space. We review the essential aspects and present a coherent picture with a number of new results.
A conformal map from a Riemann surface to the Euclidean four-space is explained in terms of its twistor lift. A local factorization of a differential of a conformal map is obtained. As an application, the factorization of a differential provides an upper bound of the area of a super-conformal map around a branch point.

We present in this paper a $C^1$-metric on an open neighbourhood of the origin in $\RR^{5}$. The metric is of Lorentzian signature $(1,4)$ and admits a solution to the twistor equation for spinors with a unique isolated zero at the origin. The metric is not conformally flat in any neighbourhood of the origin. The construction is based on the Eguchi-Hanson metric with parallel spinors on Riemannian 4-space.
