The twistor construction is applied for obtaining examples of generalized complex structures (in the sense of N. Hitchin) that are not induced by a complex or a symplectic structure.
The twistor construction for Riemannian manifolds is extended to the case of manifolds endowed with generalized metrics (in the sense of generalized geometry à la Hitchin). The generalized twistor space associated to such a manifold is defined as the bundle of generalized complex structures on the tangent spaces of the manifold compatible with the given generalized metric. This space admits natural generalized almost complex structures whose integrability conditions are found in the paper. An interesting feature of the generalized twistor spaces discussed in it is the existence of intrinsic is…
Let M be a hyperkähler manifold. The S^2-family of complex structures compatible with the hyperkähler metric can be assembled into a single complex structure on Z=MxS^2; the resulting complex manifold is known as the twistor space of M. We describe the analogous construction for generalized complex structures in the sense of Hitchin. Specifically, we exhibit a natural S^2xS^2-family of generalized complex structures compatible with the hyperkähler metric, and assemble them into a single generalized complex structure on X=MxS^2xS^2. We call the resulting generalized complex manifold the general…
We first make a little survey of the twistor theory for hypercomplex, generalized hypercomplex, quaternionic or generalized quaternionic manifolds. This last theory was iniated by Pantilie, who shows that any generalized almost quaternionic manifold equipped with an appropriate connection admit a twistor space with an almost generalized complex structure. The aim of this article is to give an integrability criterion for this generalized almost complex structure and to give some examples especially in the case of generalized hyperkähler manifolds using the generalized Bismut connection, introdu…
We introduce integrable complex structures on twistor spaces fibered over complex manifolds. We then show, in particular, that the twistor spaces associated with generalized Kahler, SKT and strong HKT manifolds all naturally admit complex structures. Moreover, in the strong HKT case we construct a metric and three compatible complex structures on the twistor space that have equal torsions.
Our approach to define monopoles is twistorial and we start by developing the twistor theory of R^5, which is an analogue of the twistor theory for R^3 developed by Hitchin. Using this, we describe a Hitchin-Ward transform for R^5, that gives monopoles. In order for us to construct monopoles we make use of spectral curves. Then, using those spectral curves we find a new system of equations, analogue to the Nahm's equations.
In this paper we determine the Gray-Hervella classes of the compatible almost complex structures on the twistor spaces of oriented Riemannian four-manifolds considered by G. Deschamps
We consider the generalized Kahler structures (g,J_+,J_-) that arise on a hyperkahler manifold (M,g,I,J,K) when we choose J_+ and J_- from the twistor space of M. We find a relation between semichiral and arctic superfields which can be used to determine the generalized Kahler potential for hyperkahler manifolds whose description in projective superspace is fully understood. We use this relation to determine an S^2-family of generalized Kahler potentials for Euclidean space and for the Eguchi-Hanson geometry. Cotangent bundles of Hermitian symmetric spaces constitute a class of hyperkahler man…
Motivated by generalized geometry (à la Hitchin), we discuss the integrability conditions for four natural almost complex structures on the product bundle ${\mathcal Z}\times {\mathcal Z}\to M$, where ${\mathcal Z}$ is the twistor space of a Riemannian 4-manifold $M$ endowed with a metric connection $D$ with skew-symmetric torsion. These structures are defined by means of the connection $D$ and four (Kähler) complex structures on the fibres of this bundle. Their integrability conditions are interpreted in terms of Weyl geometry and this is used to supply examples satisfying the conditions.
We introduce a plethora of skew algebroids on twistor spaces and describe the corresponding foliations. In a forthcoming paper, we use these algebroids to derive results about bihermitian manifolds, also known as generalized Kahler manifolds.
We study the Dirac spectrum on compact Riemannian spin manifolds $M$ equipped with a metric connection $\nabla$ with skew torsion $T\inΛ^3M$ by means of twistor theory. An optimal lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator with torsion is found that generalizes Friedrich's classical Riemannian estimate. We also determine a novel twistor and Killing equation with torsion and use it to discuss the case in which the minimum is attained in the bound.
We generalize the hyperkaehler quotient construction to the situation where there is no group action preserving the hyperkaehler structure but for each complex structure there is an action of a complex group preserving the corresponding complex symplectic structure. Many (known and new) hyperkaehler manifolds arise as quotients in this setting. For example, all hyperkaehler structures on semisimple coadjoint orbits of a complex semisimple Lie group $G$ arise as such quotients of $T^*G$. The generalized Legendre transform construction of Lindstroem and Rocek is also explained in this framework.
It is very well known that Hopf real hypersurfaces in the complex projective space can be locally characterized as tubes over complex submanifolds. This also holds true for some, but not all, Hopf real hypersurfaces in the complex hyperbolic space. The main goal of this paper is to show, in a unified way, how to construct Hopf real hypersurfaces in the complex hyperbolic space from a horizontal submanifold in one of the three twistor spaces of the indefinite complex $2$-plane Grassmannian with respect to the natural para-quaternionic Kähler structure. We also identify these twistor spaces with…
We describe complex twistor spaces over inner 3-symmetric spaces $G/H$, such that $H$ acts transitively on the fibre. Like in the symmetric case, these are flag manifolds $G/K$ where $K$ is the centralizer of a torus in $G$. Moreover, they carry an almost complex structure defined using the horizontal distribution of the normal connection on $G/H$, that coincides with the complex structure associated to a parabolic subgroup $P \subset G^{\mathbb C}$ if it is integrable. Conversely, starting from a complex flag manifold $G^{\mathbb C}/P$, there exists a natural fibration with complex fibres on …
In contrast to the classical twistor spaces whose fibres are 2-spheres, we introduce twistor spaces over manifolds with almost quaternionic structures of the second kind in the sense of P. Libermann whose fibres are hyperbolic planes. We discuss two natural almost complex structures on such a twistor space and their holomorphic functions.
A hyperkähler manifold $M$ has a family of induced complex structures indexed by a two-dimensional sphere $S^2 \cong \mathbb{CP}^1$. The twistor space of $M$ is a complex manifold $Tw(M)$ together with a natural holomorphic projection $Tw(M) \to \mathbb{CP}^1$, whose fiber over each point of $\mathbb{CP}^1$ is a copy of $M$ with the corresponding induced complex structure. We remove one point from this sphere (corresponding to one fiber in the twistor space),and for the case of $M = \mathbb{R}^{4n}$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, equipped with the standard hyperkähler structure, we construct one quantizat…
In this paper, we introduce notions of $α$-planes in $5$D complex Heisenberg group and the twistor space as the moduli space of all $α$-planes. So we can define an anti-self-dual (ASD) connection as a connection flat over all $α$-planes. This geometric approach allows us to establish Penrose-Ward correspondence between ASD connections over $5$D complex Heisenberg group and a class of holomorphic vector bundles on the twistor space. By Atiyah-Ward ansätz, we also construct a family of ASD connections on $5$D complex Heisenberg group. When restricted to $5$D real Heisenberg group, the flat model…
In this paper we introduce the twistor space of a Riemannian manifold with an even Clifford structure. This notion generalizes the twistor space of quaternion-Hermitian manifolds and weak-Spin(9) structures. We also construct almost complex structures on the twistor space for parallel even Clifford structures and check their integrability. Moreover, we prove that in some cases one can give Kähler and Nearly-Kähler metrics to these spaces.
In this paper, we construct tools from the holomorphic twistor spaces that we introduced in \cite{Gindi1} to derive results about the complex geometries of their base manifolds. In particular, we develop a new approach to studying generalized Kahler manifolds that leads to insights into their real and holomorphic Poisson structures.
With respect to the Dolbeault complex over the flat manifold $\C^n$, an explicit description of the inverse correspondence of the twistor correspondence is given.
Starting from a real analytic conformal Cartan connection on a real analytic surface $S$, we construct a complex surface $T$ containing a family of pairs of projective lines. Using the structure on $S$ we also construct a complex $3$-space $Z$, such that $Z$ is a twistor space of a self-dual conformal $4$-fold and $T$ is a quotient of $Z$ by a holomorphic local $\mathbb{C}^*$ action. We prove that $T$ is a minitwistor space of an asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein-Weyl space with $S$ as an asymptotic boundary.
We characterize HKT structure in terms of nondegenrate complex Poisson bivector on hypercomplex manifold. We extend the characterization to the twistor space. After considering the flat case in detail, we show that the twistor space of hyperkaehler manifold admits a holomorphic Poisson structure. We briefly mention the relation to quaternionic and hypercomplex deformations on tori and K3 surfaces
Every almost Hermitian structure $(g,J)$ on a four-manifold $M$ determines a hypersurface $Σ_J$ in the (positive) twistor space of $(M,g)$ consisting of the complex structures anti-commuting with $J$. In this note we find the conditions under which $Σ_J$ is minimal with respect to a natural Riemannian metric on the twistor space in the cases when $J$ is integrable or symplectic. Several examples illustrating the obtained results are also discussed.
It is shown that any irreducible analytic 1-flat $G$-structure as well as any analytic torsion-free affine connection with irreducibly acting holonomy group can, in principle, be contstructed by twistor methods.
In this paper, we provide a correspondence between certain 5-dimensional complex spacetimes and 4-dimensional twistor spaces. The spacetimes are almost contact manifolds whose curvature tensor satisfies certain conditions. By using the correspondence, we show that a 5-dimensional K-contact manifold can be obtained from the Ren-Wang twistor space, which is obtained from two copies of \C^4 identifying open subsets by a holomorphic map. From this result, the Ren-Wang twistor space can be interpreted in the framework of Itoh.
Let (M,g) be a Riemannian 4-manifold. The twistor space Z->M is a CP1-bundle whose total space Z admits a natural metric h. The aim of this article is to study properties of complex structures on (Z,h) which are compatible with the CP1-fibration and the metric h. The results obtained enable us to translate some metric properties on M in terms of complex properties on its twistor space Z.
A hypercomplex structure on a differentiable manifold consists of three integrable almost complex structures that satisfy quaternionic relations. If, in addition, there exists a metric on the manifold which is Hermitian with respect to the three structures, and such that the corresponding Hermitian forms are closed, the manifold is said to be hyperkaehler. In the paper "Non-Hermitian Yang-Mills connections", Kaledin and Verbitsky proved that the twistor space of a hyperkaehler manifold admits a balanced metric; these were first studied in the article "On the existence of special metrics in com…
To give an almost quaternionic structure on a 4n-manifold $M$ is equivalent to give its bundle of twistors $Z(Q)\longrightarrow M$. When $Q$ is invariant under a torsion free connection, $Z(Q) $ can be provided with an almost complex structure $ \mathbb J $. In the case $ n = 1 $ Atiyah, Hitchin and Singer have related the integrability of $ \mathbb J $ to the geometry of $ (M, Q) $. For $ n> 1 $ Salamon showed that the almost complex structure $ \mathbb J $ on $ Z (Q) $ is always integrable. The purpose of this article is to extend these results to the generalized complex geometry. We begin b…
In 1984 LeBrun constructed a CR-twistor space over an arbitrary conformal Riemannian 3-manifold and proved that the CR-structure is formally integrable. This twistor construction has been generalized by Rossi in 1985 for $m$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds endowed with a $(m-1)$-fold vector cross product (VCP). In 2011 Verbitsky generalized LeBrun's construction of twistor-spaces to $7$-manifolds endowed with a $G_2$-structure. In this paper we unify and generalize LeBrun's, Rossi's and Verbitsky's construction of a CR-twistor space to the case where a Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ has a VCP s…
A theorem of Kuranishi tells us that the moduli space of complex structures on any smooth compact manifold is always locally a finite-dimensional space. Globally, however, this is simply not true; we display examples in which the moduli space contains a sequence of regions for which the local dimension tends to infinity. These examples naturally arise from the twistor theory of hyper-Kaehler manifolds.
In this paper we introduce a discrete integrable system generalizing the discrete (real) cross-ratio system in $S^4$ to complex values of a generalized cross-ratio by considering $S^4$ as a real section of the complex Plücker quadric, realized as the space of two-spheres in $S^4.$ We develop the geometry of the Plücker quadric by examining the novel contact properties of two-spheres in $S^4,$ generalizing classical Lie geometry in $S^3.$ Discrete differential geometry aims to develop discrete equivalents of the geometric notions and methods of classical differential geometry. We define discret…
We collect our recent results ([5] and [8]) and we get the equivalence of the three notions of the title under some conditions. We then use this equivalence in order to prove some consequences about Sasakian manifolds, complex almost contact structures and complex k-contact structures.
The transversal twistor space of a foliation F of an even codimension is the bundle ZF of the complex structures of the fibers of the transversal bundle of F. On ZF, there exists a foliation F' by covering spaces of the leaves of F, and any Bott connection of F produces an ordered pair (I,J) of transversal almost complex structures of F'. The existence of a Bott connection which yields a structure I that is projectable to the space of leaves is equivalent to the fact that F is a transversally projective foliation. A Bott connection which yields a projectable structure J exists iff F is a trans…
We characterise, in the setting of the Kodaira-Spencer deformation theory, the twistor spaces of (co-)CR quaternionic manifolds. As an application, we prove that, locally, the leaf space of any nowhere zero quaternionic vector field on a quaternionic manifold is endowed with a natural co-CR quaternionic structure. Also, for any positive integers $k$ and $l$, with $kl$ even, we obtain the geometric objects whose twistorial counterparts are complex manifolds endowed with a conjugation without fixed points and which preserves an embedded Riemann sphere whose normal bundle is $l$ times the line bu…
As in the case of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds, the period domain $Compl$ of compact complex tori of even dimension $2n$ contains twistor lines. These are special $2$-spheres parametrizing complex tori whose complex structures arise from a given quaternionic structure. In analogy with the case of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds, we show that the periods of any two complex tori can be joined by a {\em generic} chain of twistor lines. We also prove a criterion of twistor path connectivity of loci in $Compl$ where a fixed second cohomology class stays of Hodge type (1…
For $n \geq 1$, the twistor space $\mathfrak{Z}(\mathbb{S}^{2n})$ of the conformal $2n$-sphere is biholomorphic to the Zariski closure, taken in the complex Grassmannian manifold $\mathbf{G}(n+1, 2n+2)$, of the set of graphs of skew-symmetric linear endomorphism of $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$. We use this fact to describe a natural stratification of the twistor space $\mathfrak{Z}(\mathbb{S}^{2n})$ with $n \geq 3$, in terms of what we have called {\it generalised complex orthogonal Stiefel manifolds} of $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$. In particular, the twistor space $\mathfrak{Z}(\mathbb{S}^{6})$ is biholomorphic…
Let $f:X\to Y$ be a morphism of complex manifolds. Suppose that $X$ is a Kähler manifold. Let $(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{S})$ be a regular polarized pure twistor $\mathcal{D}$-module of weight $w$ on $X$ whose support is proper over $Y$. We prove the Hard Lefschetz Theorem for the push-forward of $(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{S})$ by $f$. As one of the key steps, we obtain the twistor version of a theorem of Kashiwara and Kawai about the Hodge structure on the intersection complex of polarized variation of Hodge structure.
In this article, we show that a hypersurface of the nearly Kahler $CP^3$ or $F_{1,2}$ cannot have its shape operator and induced almost contact structure commute together. This settles the question for six-dimensional homogeneous nearly Kahler manifolds, as the cases of $S^6$ and $S^3 \times S^3$ were previously solved, and provides a counterpart to the more classical question for the complex space forms $CP^n$ and $CH^n$. The proof relies heavily on the construction of $CP^3$ and $F_{1,2}$ as twistor spaces of $S^4$ and $CP^2$
We investigate various limits of the twistor spaces associated to the self-dual metrics on n CP ^2, the connected sum of the complex projective planes, constructed by C. LeBrun. In particular, we explicitly present the following 3 kinds of degenerations whose limits of the metrics are: (a) LeBrun metrics on (n-1) CP ^2$, (b) (Another) LeBrun metrics on the total space of the line bundle O(-n) over CP ^1 (c) The hyper-Kaehler metrics on the small resolution of rational double points of type A_{n-1}, constructed by Gibbons and Hawking.
For a symplectic manifold admitting a metaplectic structure (a symplectic analogue of the Riemannian spin structure), we construct a sequence consisting of differential operators using a symplectic torsion-free affine connection. All but one of these operators are of first order. The first order ones are symplectic analogues of the twistor operators known from Riemannian spin geometry. We prove that under the condition the symplectic Weyl curvature tensor field of the symplectic connection vanishes, the mentioned sequence forms a complex. This gives rise to a new complex for the so called Ricc…
The twistor space of the sphere S^{2n} is an isotropic Grassmannian that fibers over S^{2n}. An orthogonal complex structure on a subdomain of S^{2n} (a complex structure compatible with the round metric) determines a section of this fibration with holomorphic image. In this paper, we use this correspondence to prove that any finite energy orthogonal complex structure on R^6 must be of a special warped product form, and we also prove that any orthogonal complex structure on R^{2n} that is asymptotically constant must itself be constant. We will also give examples defined on R^{2n} which have i…
The twistor space \Z of an oriented Riemannian 4-manifold M admits a natural 1-parameter family of Riemannian metrics h_t compatible with the almost complex structures J_1 and J_2 introduced, respectively, by Atiyah, Hitchin and Singer, and Eells and Salamon. In this paper we compute the first Chern form of the almost Hermitian manifold (\Z,h_t,J_n), n=1,2 and find the geometric conditions on M under which the curvature of its Chern connection D^n is of type (1,1). We also describe the twistor spaces of constant holomorphic sectional curvature with respect to D^n and show that the Nijenhuis te…
In this paper we describe the oriented Riemannian four-manifolds $M$ for which the Atiyah-Hitchin-Singer or Eells-Salamon almost complex structure on the twistor space ${\mathcal Z}$ of $M$ determines a harmonic map from ${\mathcal Z}$ into its twistor space.
We characterise the integrability of any co-CR quaternionic structure in terms of the curvature and a generalized torsion of the connection. Also, we apply this result to obtain, for example, the following. (1) New co-CR quaternionic structures built on vector bundles over a quaternionic manifold M, whose twistor spaces are holomorphic vector bundles over the twistor space Z of M. Moreover, all the holomorphic vector bundles over Z, which are positive and isotypic when restricted to the twistor lines, are obtained this way. (2) Under generic dimensional conditions, any manifold endowed with an…
The theory of slice regular functions of a quaternion variable is applied to the study of orthogonal complex structures on domains Ω of R^4. When Ω is a symmetric slice domain, the twistor transform of such a function is a holomorphic curve in the Klein quadric. The case in which Ω is the complement of a parabola is studied in detail and described by a rational quartic surface in the twistor space CP^3.
We explicitly construct the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics with torus action that are not treated in Part I (math.DG/0603242). This finishes a construction of all the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics on the connected sum of four complex projective planes.
We consider some classical fibre bundles furnished with almost complex structures of twistor type, deduce their integrability in some cases and study \textit{self-holomorphic} sections of a \textit{symplectic} twistor space. With these we define a moduli space of $ω$-compatible complex structures. We recall the theory of flag manifolds in order to study the Siegel domain and other domains alike, which is the fibre of the referred twistor space. Finally the structure equations for the twistor of a Riemann surface with the canonical symplectic-metric connection are deduced, based on a given conf…
In this work we generalize the classical notion of a (compact) twistor line in the period domain of compact complex tori. We introduce two new types of lines, which are non-compact analytic curves in the period domain of complex tori. We study the analytic properties of the compactifications of the curves, the preservation of cohomology classes of type (1,1) along the curves and the twistor path connectivity of the period domain by the curves of one of the new types.
In this expository paper we review some twistor techniques and recall the problem of finding compact differentiable manifolds that can carry both Kähler and non-Kähler complex structures. Such examples were constructed independently by M. Atiyah, A. Blanchard and E. Calabi in the $1950$'s. In the $1980$'s V. Tsanov gave an example of a simply connected manifold that admits both Kähler and non-Kähler complex structures - the twistor space of a $K3$ surface. Here we show that the quaternion twistor space of a hyperkähler manifold has the same property.
We discuss twistor-like interpretation of the $Sp(8)$ invariant formulation of 4d massless fields in ten dimensional Lagrangian Grassmannian $Sp(8)/P$ which is the generalized space-time in this framework. The correspondence space $\mathbf{C}$ is $SpH(8)/PH$ where $SpH(8)$ is the semidirect product of $Sp(8)$ with Heisenberg group $\HG$ and $PH$ is some quasiparabolic subgroup of $SpH(8)$. Spaces of functions on $Sp(8)/P$ and $SpH(8)/PH$ consist of $Q_P $ closed functions on $Sp(8)$ and $Q_{PH} $ closed functions on $SpH(8)$, where $Q_P $ and $Q_{PH}$ are canonical BRST operators of $P$ and $P…
