In this we consider weighted symmetric digraph. Our result generalizes the work of Zhu (J.Comb.Theory, Ser.B, 86 (2002) 109-113) concerning the (k,d)-coloring of a graph, and thus is also a generalization of a corresponding result of Tuza
(J.Comb.Theory, Ser.B, 55 (1992) 236-243). Our result also strengthens a result of Goddyn, Tarsi and Zhang (J.Graph Theory 28 (1998) 155-161) concerning the relation between orientation and the
(k,d)-coloring of a graph.
A majority coloring of a directed graph is a vertex-coloring in which every vertex has the same color as at most half of its out-neighbors. Kreutzer, Oum, Seymour, van der Zypen and Wood proved that every digraph has a majority 4-coloring and conjectured that every digraph admits a majority 3-coloring. We verify this conjecture for digraphs with chromatic number at most 6 or dichromatic number at most 3. We obtain analogous results for list coloring: We show that every digraph with list chromatic number at most 6 or list dichromatic number at most 3 is majority 3-choosable. We deduce that digr…
DP-coloring is a relatively new coloring concept by Dvořák and Postle and was introduced as an extension of list-colorings of (undirected) graphs. It transforms the problem of finding a list-coloring of a given graph $G$ with a list-assignment $L$ to finding an independent transversal in an auxiliary graph with vertex set $\{(v,c) ~|~ v \in V(G), c \in L(v)\}$. In this paper, we extend the definition of DP-colorings to digraphs using the approach from Neumann-Lara where a coloring of a digraph is a coloring of the vertices such that the digraph does not contain any monochromatic directed cycle…
\qquad A \emph{coloring} of a digraph $D=(V,E)$ is a coloring of its vertices following the rule: Let $uv$ be an arc in $D$. If the tail $u$ is colored first, then the head $v$ should receive a color different from that of $u$. The \emph{dichromatic number} $χ_d(D)$ of $D$ is the minimum number of colors needed in a coloring of $D$. Besides obtaining many results and bounds for $χ_d(D)$ analogous to that of chromatic number of a graph, we prove $χ_d(D)=1$ if $D$ is acyclic. New notions of sequential colorings of graphs/digraphs are introduced. A characterization of acyclic digraph is obtained …
For a fixed simple digraph $F$ and a given simple digraph $D$, an $F$-free $k$-coloring of $D$ is a vertex-coloring in which no induced copy of $F$ in $D$ is monochromatic. We study the complexity of deciding for fixed $F$ and $k$ whether a given simple digraph admits an $F$-free $k$-coloring. Our main focus is on the restriction of the problem to planar input digraphs, where it is only interesting to study the cases $k \in \{2,3\}$. From known results it follows that for every fixed digraph $F$ whose underlying graph is not a forest, every planar digraph $D$ admits an $F$-free $2$-coloring, a…
A vertex coloring of a strong digraph $D$ is a \emph{strong vertex-monochromatic connection coloring (SVMC-coloring)} if for every pair $u, v$ of vertices in $D$ there exists an $(u,v)$-path having all its internal vertices of the same color. Let $smc_v(D)$ denote the maximum number of colors used in an SVMC-coloring of a digraph $D$. In this paper we determine the value of $smc_v(D)$, whenever $D$ is the line digraph of a digraph. Also, if $T$ is a tournament, we give conditions to find the exact value of $smc_v(T)$.
We consider vertex coloring of an acyclic digraph $\Gdag$ in such a way that two vertices which have a common ancestor in $\Gdag$ receive distinct colors. Such colorings arise in a natural way when bounding space for various genetic data for efficient analysis. We discuss the corresponding {\em down-chromatic number} and derive an upper bound as a function of $D(\Gdag)$, the maximum number of descendants of a given vertex, and the degeneracy of the corresponding hypergraph. Finally we determine an asymptotically tight upper bound of the down-chromatic number in terms of the number of vertices …
We prove a conjecture by Aboulker, Charbit and Naserasr by showing that every oriented graph in which the out-neighborhood of every vertex induces a transitive tournament can be partitioned into two acyclic induced subdigraphs. We prove multiple extensions of this result to larger classes of digraphs defined by a finite list of forbidden induced subdigraphs. We thereby resolve several special cases of an extension of the famous Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture to directed graphs by Aboulker et al.
The chromatic number of a digraph $D$ is the minimum number of acyclic subgraphs covering the vertex set of $D$. A tournament $H$ is a hero if every $H$-free tournament $T$ has chromatic number bounded by a function of $H$. Inspired by the celebrated Erdős--Hajnal conjecture, Berger et al. fully characterized the class of heroes in 2013. We extend this framework to dense digraphs: A digraph $H$ is a superhero if every $H$-free digraph $D$ has chromatic number bounded by a function of $H$ and $α(D)$, the independence number of the underlying graph of $D$. We prove here that a digraph is a super…
The dichromatic number $\vecχ(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the least number $k$ such that the vertex set of $D$ can be partitioned into $k$ parts each of which induces an acyclic subdigraph. Introduced by Neumann-Lara in 1982, this digraph invariant shares many properties with the usual chromatic number of graphs and can be seen as the natural analog of the graph chromatic number. In this paper, we study the list dichromatic number of digraphs, giving evidence that this notion generalizes the list chromatic number of graphs. We first prove that the list dichromatic number and the dichromatic number…
The digirth of a digraph is the length of a shortest directed cycle. The dichromatic number $\vecχ(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the smallest size of a partition of the vertex-set into subsets inducing acyclic subgraphs. A conjecture by Harutyunyan and Mohar states that $\vecχ(D) \le \left\lceil\fracΔ{4}\right\rceil+1$ for every digraph $D$ of digirth at least $3$ and maximum degree $Δ$. The best known partial result by Golowich shows that $\vecχ(D) \le \frac{2}{5}Δ+O(1)$. In this short note we prove for every $g \ge 2$ that if $D$ is a digraph of digirth at least $2g-1$ and maximum degree $Δ$, then…
Assume that D is a digraph without cyclic triangles and its vertices are partitioned into classes A_1,...,A_t of independent vertices. A set $U=\cup_{i\in S} A_i$ is called a dominating set of size |S| if for any vertex $v\in \cup_{i\notin S} A_i$ there is a w in U such that (w,v) is in E(D). Let beta(D) be the cardinality of the largest independent set of D whose vertices are from different partite classes of D. Our main result says that there exists a h=h(beta(D)) such that D has a dominating set of size at most h. This result is applied to settle a problem related to generalized Gallai colo…
We consider the extension to directed graphs of the concept of achromatic number in terms of acyclic vertex colorings. The achromatic number have been intensely studied since it was introduced by Harary, Hedetniemi and Prins in 1967. The dichromatic number is a generalization of the chromatic number for digraphs defined by Neumann-Lara in 1982. A coloring of a digraph is an acyclic coloring if each subdigraph induced by each chromatic class is acyclic, and a coloring is complete if for any pair of chromatic classes $x,y$, there is an arc from $x$ to $y$ and an arc from $y$ to $x$. The dichroma…
Let $k$ and $r$ be two integers with $k \ge 2$ and $k\ge r \ge 1$. In this paper we show that (1) if a strongly connected digraph $D$ contains no directed cycle of length $1$ modulo $k$, then $D$ is $k$-colorable; and (2) if a digraph $D$ contains no directed cycle of length $r$ modulo $k$, then $D$ can be vertex-colored with $k$ colors so that each color class induces an acyclic subdigraph in $D$. The first result gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Tuza in 1992, and the second implies the following strong form of a conjecture of Diwan, Kenkre and Vishwanathan: If an undirected…
A \emph{majority coloring} of a digraph is a coloring of its vertices such that for each vertex $v$, at most half of the out-neighbors of $v$ has the same color as $v$. A digraph $D$ is \emph{majority $k$-choosable} if for any assignment of lists of colors of size $k$ to the vertices there is a majority coloring of $D$ from these lists. We prove that every digraph is majority $4$-choosable. This gives a positive answer to a question posed recently by Kreutzer, Oum, Seymour, van der Zypen, and Wood in \cite{Kreutzer}. We obtain this result as a consequence of a more general theorem, in which ma…
A proof of the Generalized Road Coloring Problem, independent of the recent work by Beal and Perrin, is presented, using both semigroup methods and Trakhtman's algorithm. Algebraic properties of periodic, strongly connected digraphs are studied in the semigroup context. An algebraic condition which characterizes periodic, strongly connected digraphs is determined in the context of periodic Markov chains.
Catch digraphs was introduced by Hiroshi Maehara in 1984 as an analog of intersection graphs where a family of pointed sets represents a digraph. After that Prisner continued his research particularly on interval catch digraphs by characterizing them diasteroidal triple free. It has numerous applications in the field of real world problems like network technology and telecommunication operations. Recently, we characterized three important subclasses of interval catch digraphs. In this article we introduce a new class of catch digraphs, namely circular-arc catch digraphs. The definition is same…
An acyclic coloring of a digraph as defined by Neumann-Lara is a vertex-coloring such that no monochromatic directed cycles occur. Counting the number of such colorings with $k$ colors can be done by counting so-called Neumann-Lara-coflows (NL-coflows), which build a polynomial in $k$. We will present a representation of this polynomial using totally cyclic subdigraphs, which form a graded poset $Q$. Furthermore we will decompose our NL-coflow polynomial, which becomes the chromatic polynomial of a digraph by multiplication with the number of colors to the number of components, examining the s…
We consider acyclic r-colorings in graphs and digraphs: they color the vertices in r colors, each of which induces an acyclic graph or digraph. (This includes the dichromatic number of a digraph, and the arboricity of a graph.) For any girth and sufficiently high degree, we prove the NP-completeness of acyclic r-colorings; our method also implies the known analogue for classical colorings. The proofs use high girth graphs with high arboricity and dichromatic numbers. High girth graphs and digraphs with high chromatic and dichromatic numbers have been well studied; we re-derive the results from…
We extend the Grundy number and the ochromatic number, parameters on graph colorings, to digraph colorings, we call them {\emph{digrundy number}} and {\emph{diochromatic number}}, respectively. First, we prove that for every digraph the diochromatic number equals the digrundy number (as it happen for graphs). Then, we prove the interpolation property and the Nordhaus-Gaddum relations for the digrundy number, and improve the Nordhaus-Gaddum relations for the dichromatic and diachromatic numbers bounded previously by the authors in [Electron. J. Combin. 25 (2018) no. 3, Paper {\#} 3.51, 17 pp.]
The dichromatic number of a digraph $G$ is the smallest integer $χ_a(G)$ such that the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into $χ_a(G)$ sets, each of which induces an acyclic subdigraph. This is a generalization of the classic chromatic number of graphs. Here, we investigate the dichromatic number of the cartesian, direct, strong and lexicographic products, giving generalizations of some classic results on the chromatic number of products. More specifically, we prove that the following inequalities, known to hold for the chromatic number of graphs, still hold for the dichromatic number of di…
An NP-complete coloring or homomorphism problem may become polynomial time solvable when restricted to graphs with degrees bounded by a small number, but remain NP-complete if the bound is higher. For instance, 3-colorability of graphs with degrees bounded by 3 can be decided by Brooks' theorem, while for graphs with degrees bounded by 4, the 3-colorability problem is NP-complete. We investigate an analogous phenomenon for digraphs, focusing on the three smallest digraphs H with NP-complete H-colorability problems. It turns out that in all three cases the H-coloring problem is polynomial time …
This paper serves as the first extension of the topic of dominator colorings of graphs to the setting of digraphs. We establish the dominator chromatic number over all possible orientations of paths and cycles. In this endeavor we discover that there are infinitely many counterexamples of a graph and subgraph pair for which the subgraph has a larger dominator chromatic number than the larger graph into which it embeds. Finally, a new graph invariant measuring the difference between the dominator chromatic number of a graph and the chromatic number of that graph is established and studied. The …
We count the number of walks of length n on a k-node circular digraph that cover all k nodes in two ways. The first way illustrates the transfer-matrix method. The second involves counting various classes of height-restricted lattice paths. We observe that the results also count so-called k-balanced strings of length n, generalizing a 1996 Putnam problem.
We complete the characterization of the digraphs $D$ for which the induced $D$-removal lemma has polynomial bounds, answering a question of Alon and Shapira. We also study the analogous problem for $k$-colored complete graphs. In particular, we prove a removal lemma with polynomial bounds for Gallai colorings.

In this paper we consider colorings of oriented graphs, i.e. digraphs without cycles of length 2. Given some oriented graph $G=(V,E)$, an oriented $r$-coloring for $G$ is a partition of the vertex set $V$ into $r$ independent sets, such that all the arcs between two of these sets have the same direction. The oriented chromatic number of $G$ is the smallest integer $r$ such that $G$ permits an oriented $r$-coloring. In this paper we consider the Oriented Chromatic Number problem on classes of recursively defined oriented graphs. Oriented co-graphs (short for oriented complement reducible graphs…
The dichromatic number $\vecχ(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the smallest $k$ for which it admits a $k$-coloring where every color class induces an acyclic subgraph. Inspired by Hadwiger's conjecture for undirected graphs, several groups of authors have recently studied the containment of directed graph minors in digraphs with given dichromatic number. In this short note we improve several of the existing bounds and prove almost linear bounds by reducing the problem to a recent result of Postle on Hadwiger's conjecture.
Let $k, d$ ($2d \leq k)$ be two positive integers. We generalize the well studied notions of $(k,d)$-colorings and of the circular chromatic number $χ_c$ to signed graphs. This implies a new notion of colorings of signed graphs, and the corresponding chromatic number $χ$. Some basic facts on circular colorings of signed graphs and on the circular chromatic number are proved, and differences to the results on unsigned graphs are analyzed. In particular, we show that the difference between the circular chromatic number and the chromatic number of a signed graph is at most 1. Indeed, there are si…
In any vertex coloring of a graph some edges have differently colored ends (\emph{good} edges) and some are monochromatic (\emph{bad} edges). In a proper coloring all edges are good. In a \emph{majority coloring} it is enough that for every vertex $v$, the number of bad edges incident to $v$ does not exceed the number of good edges incident to $v$. A well known result of Lovász \cite{Lovasz} asserts that every finite graph has a majority $2$-coloring. A similar statement for countably infinite graphs is a challenging open problem, known as the \emph{Unfriendly Partition Conjecture}. We conside…
A decomposition of a simple graph $G$ is a pair $(G,P)$ where $P$ is a set of subgraphs of $G$, which partitions the edges of $G$ in the sense that every edge of $G$ belongs to exactly one subgraph in $P$. If the elements of $P$ are induced subgraphs then the decomposition is denoted by $[G,P]$. A $k$-$P$-coloring of a decomposition $(G,P)$ is a surjective function that assigns to the edges of $G$ a color from a $k$-set of colors, such that all edges of $H\in P$ have the same color, and, if $H_1,H_2\in P$ with $V(H_1)\cap V(H_2)\neq\emptyset$ then $E(H_1)$ and $E(H_2)$ have different colors. T…
We study the following Steinberg-type problem on circular coloring: for an odd integer $k\ge 3$, what is the smallest number $f(k)$ such that every planar graph of girth $k$ without cycles of length from $k+1$ to $f(k)$ admits a homomorphism to the odd cycle $C_k$ (or equivalently, is circular $(k,\frac{k-1}{2})$-colorable). Known results and counterexamples on Steinberg's Conjecture indicate that $f(3)\in\{6,7\}$. In this paper, we show that $f(k)$ exists if and only if $k$ is an odd prime. Moreover, we prove that for any prime $p\ge 5$, $$p^2-\frac{5}{2}p+\frac{3}{2}\le f(p)\le 2p^2+2p-5.$$ …
We introduce a new notion of circular colourings for digraphs. The idea of this quantity, called star dichromatic number $\vecχ^\ast(D)$ of a digraph $D$, is to allow a finer subdivision of digraphs with the same dichromatic number into such which are "easier" or "harder" to colour by allowing fractional values. This is related to a coherent notion for the vertex arboricity of graphs introduced by Wang et al. and resembles the concept of the star chromatic number of graphs introduced by Vince in the framework of digraph colouring. After presenting basic properties of the new quantity, includin…
We consider circular version of the famous Nelson-Hadwiger problem. It is know that 4 colors are necessary and 7 colors suffice to color the euclidean plane in such a way that points at distance one get different colors. In $r$-circular coloring we assign arcs of length one of a circle with a perimeter $r$ in such a way that points at distance one get disjoint arcs. In this paper we show the existence of $r$-circular coloring for $r=4+\frac{4\sqrt{3}}{3}\approx 6.30$. It is the first result with $r$-circular coloring of the plane with $r$ smaller than 7. We also show $r$-circular coloring of t…
In this paper, we investigate circular chromatic number of Mycielski construction of graphs. It was shown in \cite{MR2279672} that $t^{\rm th}$ Mycielskian of the Kneser graph $KG(m,n)$ has the same circular chromatic number and chromatic number provided that $m+t$ is an even integer. We prove that if $m$ is large enough, then $χ(M^t(KG(m,n)))=χ_c(M^t(KG(m,n)))$ where $M^t$ is $t^{\rm th}$ Mycielskian. Also, we consider the generalized Kneser graph $KG(m,n,s)$ and show that there exists a threshold $m(n,s,t)$ such that $χ(M^t(KG(m,n,s)))=χ_c(M^t(KG(m,n,s)))$ for $m\geq m(n,s,t)$.
Let $k$ be an positive integer. For any two integers $i$ and $j$ in $\{0,1,\dots,k-1\}$, let $|i-j|_k=\min\{|i-j|,k-|i-j|\}$ be the circular distance between $i$ and $j$. Let $t$ be a nonnegative integer. Suppose $f$ is a mapping from $V(G)$ to $\{0,1,\dots,k-1\}$. If adjacent vertices receive different integers, and for each vertex $u$ of $G$, the number of neighbors $v$ of $u$ with $|f(u)-f(v)|_k=1$ is at most $t$, then $f$ is called a $t$-relaxed 2-distant circular $k$-coloring, or simply a $(\frac{k}{2},t)^*$-coloring of $G$. If $G$ has a $(\frac{k}{2},t)^*$-coloring, then $G$ is called $(…
For a fixed digraph $\mathbb H$, the $\mathbb H$-coloring problem is the problem of deciding whether a given input digraph $\mathbb G$ admits a homomorphism to $\mathbb H$. The CSP dichotomy conjecture of Feder and Vardi is equivalent to proving that, for any $\mathbb H$, the $\mathbb H$-coloring problem is in in P or NP-complete. We confirm this dichotomy for a certain class of oriented trees, which we call special trees (generalizing earlier results on special triads and polyads). Moreover, we prove that every tractable special oriented tree has bounded width, i.e., the corresponding $\mathb…
Let $\log^Cn\le d\le n/2$ for a sufficiently large constant $C>0$ and let $A_n$ denote the adjacency matrix of a uniform random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices. We prove that as $n$ tends to infinity, the empirical spectral distribution of $A_n$, suitably rescaled, is governed by the Circular Law. A key step is to obtain quantitative lower tail bounds for the smallest singular value of additive perturbations of $A_n$.
The notion of the circular coloring of signed graphs is a recent one that simultaneously extends both notions of the circular coloring of graphs and $0$-free coloring of signed graphs. A circular $r$-coloring of a signed graph $(G, σ)$ is to assign points of a circle of circumference $r$, $r\geq 2$, to the vertices of $G$ such that vertices connected by a positive edge are at circular distance at least $1$ and vertices connected by a negative edge are at circular distance at most $\frac{r}{2}-1$. The infimum of all $r$ for which $(G, σ)$ admits a circular $r$-coloring is said to be the circula…
A circular $r$-coloring of a signed graph $(G, σ)$ is an assignment $ϕ$ of points of a circle $C_r$ of circumference $r$ to the vertices of $(G, σ)$ such that for each positive edge $uv$ of $(G, σ)$ the distance of $ϕ(v)$ and $ϕ(v)$ is at least 1 and for each negative edge $uv$ the distance of $ϕ(u)$ from the antipodal of $ϕ(v)$ is at least 1. The circular chromatic number of $(G, σ)$, denoted $χ_c(G, σ)$, is the infimum of $r$ such that $(G, σ)$ admits a circular $r$-coloring. This notion is recently defined by Naserasr, Wang, and Zhu who, among other results, proved that for any signed $d$-d…
A signed graph is a pair $(G, σ)$, where $G$ is a graph and $σ: E(G) \to \{+, -\}$ is a signature which assigns to each edge of $G$ a sign. Various notions of coloring of signed graphs have been studied. In this paper, we extend circular coloring of graphs to signed graphs. Given a signed graph $(G, σ)$ a circular $r$-coloring of $(G, σ)$ is an assignment $ψ$ of points of a circle of circumference $r$ to the vertices of $G$ such that for every edge $e=uv$ of $G$, if $σ(e)=+$, then $ψ(u)$ and $ψ(v)$ have distance at least $1$, and if $σ(e)=-$, then $ψ(v)$ and the antipodal of $ψ(u)$ have distan…
The fractional and circular chromatic numbers are the two most studied non-integral refinements of the chromatic number of a graph. Starting from the definition of a coloring base of a graph, which originated in work related to ergodic theory, we formalize the notion of a gyrocoloring of a graph: the vertices are colored by translates of a single Borel set in the circle group, and neighbouring vertices receive disjoint translates. The corresponding gyrochromatic number of a graph always lies between the fractional chromatic number and the circular chromatic number. We investigate basic propert…
In this paper we present an algorithm for finding a minimum dominator coloring of orientations of paths. To date this is the first algorithm for dominator colorings of digraphs in any capacity. We prove that the algorithm always provides a minimum dominator coloring of an oriented path and show that it runs in $\mathcal{O}(n)$ time. The algorithm is available at https://github.com/cat-astrophic/MDC-orientations_of_paths/.
