We consider the cubic Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation in one space dimension, either focusing or defocusing. We prove that the solutions satisfy a-priori local in time H^s bounds in terms of the H^s size of the initial data for s greater than or equal to -1/6.
We discuss a method for the construction of almost periodic solutions of the one dimensional analytic NLS with only Sobolev regularity both in time and space. This is the first result of this kind for PDEs.
We consider the energy critical nonlinear Schrodinger equation on generic irrational tori. Using the long-time Strichartz estimates proved in [8], we establish polynomial upper bounds for higher Sobolev norms for solutions with small energy.
We prove polynomial upper bounds on the growth of solutions to 2d cubic NLS where the Laplacian is confined by the harmonic potential. Due to better bilinear effects our bounds improve on those available for the $2d$ cubic NLS in the periodic setting: our growth rate for a Sobolev norm of order s=2k, $k\in \mathbb{N}$, is $t^{2(s-1)/3+\varepsilon}$. In the appendix we provide an direct proof, based on integration by parts, of bilinear estimates associated with the harmonic oscillator.
We consider the mass-subcritical NLS in dimensions $d\geq 3$ with radial initial data. In the defocusing case, we prove that any solution that remains bounded in the critical Sobolev space throughout its lifespan must be global and scatter. In the focusing case, we prove the existence of a threshold solution that has a compact flow.
We study the quintic Non Linear Schrödinger equation on a two dimensional torus and exhibit orbits whose Sobolev norms grow with time. The main point is to reduce to a sufficiently simple toy model, similar in many ways to the one used in the case of the cubic NLS. This requires an accurate combinatorial analysis.
The authors compute the long-time asymptotics for solutions of the NLS equation just under the assumption that the initial data lies in a weighted Sobolev space. In earlier work (see e.g. [DZ1],[DIZ]) high orders of decay and smoothness are required for the initial data. The method here is a further development of the steepest descent method of [DZ1], and replaces certain absolute type estimates in [DZ1] with cancellation from oscillations.
In this paper we consider Schr{ö}dinger equations with nonlinearities of odd order 2$σ$ + 1 on T^d. We prove that for $σ$d$\ge$2, they are strongly illposed in the Sobolev space H^s for any s \textless{} 0, exhibiting norm-inflation with infinite loss of regularity. In the case of the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation and its renormalized version we prove such a result for H^s with s \textless{} --2/3.
All the almost periodic solutions for non integrable PDEs found in the literature are very regular (at least $C^\infty$) and, hence, very close to quasi periodic ones. This fact is deeply exploited in the existing proofs. Proving the existence of almost periodic solutions with finite regularity is a main open problem in KAM theory for PDEs. Here we consider the one dimensional NLS with external parameters and construct almost periodic solutions which have only Sobolev regularity both in time and space. Moreover many of our solutions are so only in a weak sense. This is the first result on exis…
We prove the existence of quasi-periodic solutions for Schroedinger equations with a multiplicative potential on T^d, d \geq 1, merely differentiable nonlinearities, and tangential frequencies constrained along a pre-assigned direction. The solutions have only Sobolev regularity both in time and space. If the nonlinearity and the potential are infinitely many times differentiable so are the solutions. The proofs are based on an improved Nash-Moser iterative scheme, which assumes the weakest tame estimates for the inverse linearized operators ("Green functions") along scales of Sobolev spaces. …
We consider a completely resonant nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the $d$-dimensional torus, for any $d\geq 1$, with polynomial nonlinearity of any degree $2p+1$, $p\geq1$, which is gauge and translation invariant. We study the behaviour of high Sobolev $H^{s}$-norms of solutions, $s\geq s_1+1 > d/2 + 2$, whose initial datum $u_0\in H^{s}$ satisfies an appropriate smallness condition on its low $H^{s_1}$ and $L^2$-norms respectively. We prove a polynomial upper bound on the possible growth of the Sobolev norm $H^{s}$ over finite but long time scale that is exponential in the regularity param…
The L^2 -critical defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger initial value problem on R^d is known to be locally well-posed for initial data in L^2. Hamiltonian conservation and the pseudoconformal transformation show that global well-posedness holds for initial data u_0 in Sobolev H^1 and for data in the weighted space (1+|x|) u_0 in L^2. For the d=2 problem, it is known that global existence holds for data in H^s and also for data in the weighted space (1+|x|)^σ u_0 in L^2 for certain s, σ< 1. We prove: If global well-posedness holds in H^s then global existence and scattering holds for initial data i…
We consider the completely resonant defocusing non-linear Schrödinger equation on the two dimensional torus with any analytic gauge invariant nonlinearity. Fix $s>1$. We show the existence of solutions of this equation which achieve arbitrarily large growth of $H^s$ Sobolev norms. We also give estimates for the time required to attain this growth.
Using suitable modified energies we study higher order Sobolev norms' growth in time for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on a generic $2d$ or $3d$ compact manifold. In $2d$ we extend earlier results that dealt only with cubic nonlinearities, and get polynomial in time bounds for any higher order nonlinearities. In $3d$, we prove that solutions to the cubic NLS grow at most exponentially, while for sub-cubic NLS we get polynomial bounds on the growth of the $H^2$-norm.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the cubic fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation (4NLS) on the circle. In particular, we prove global well-posedness of the renormalized 4NLS in negative Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s > -\frac{1}{3}$, with enhanced uniqueness. The proof consists of two separate arguments. (i) We first prove global existence in $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s > -\frac{9}{20}$, via the short-time Fourier restriction norm method. By following the argument in Guo-Oh for the cubic NLS, this also leads to non-existence of solutions for the (non-renormalized) 4NLS in negative Sobo…
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous biharmonic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (IBNLS) \[iu_{t} +Δ^{2} u=λ|x|^{-b}|u|^σu,u(0)=u_{0} \in H^{s} (\mathbb R^{d}),\] where $λ\in \mathbb R$, $d\in \mathbb N$, $0<s<\min \{2+\frac{d}{2},\frac{3}{2}d\}$ and $0<b<\min\{4,d,\frac{3}{2}d-s,\frac{d}{2}+2-s\}$. Under some regularity assumption for the nonlinear term, we prove that the IBNLS equation is globally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbb R^{d})$ if $\frac{8-2b}{d}<σ< σ_{c}(s)$ and the initial data is sufficiently small, where $σ_{c}(s)=\frac{8-2b}{d-2s}$ if $s<\frac{d}{2}$, and…
We consider the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the two-dimensional torus. The equation admits a special family of elliptic invariant quasiperiodic tori called finite-gap solutions. These are inherited from the integrable 1D model (cubic NLS on the circle) by considering solutions that depend only on one variable. We study the long-time stability of such invariant tori for the 2D NLS model and show that, under certain assumptions and over sufficiently long timescales, they exhibit a strong form of transverse instability in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T}^2)$ ($0<s<1$). …
In this paper we prove approximation properties of the solutions of the defoucsing NLS equation on the circle by nearly linear flows. In addition we show that spatially periodic solutions of the defocusing NLS equation evolving in fractional Sobolev spaces $H^s$ with $s\geq 1$ remain bounded for all times.
We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $2$-dimensional irrational tori. We construct solutions which undergo growth of Sobolev norms. More concretely, for every $s>0$, $s\neq 1$ and almost every choice of spatial periods we construct solutions whose $H^s$ Sobolev norms grow by any prescribed factor. Moreover, for a set of spatial periods with positive Hausdorff dimension we construct solutions whose Sobolev norms go from arbitrarily small to arbitrarily large. We also provide estimates for the time needed to undergo the norm explosion. Note that the irrationality of the space …
In this paper we continue our study [DSS20] of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with bounded initial data which do not vanish at infinity. Local well-posedness on $\mathbb{R}$ was proved for real analytic data. Here we prove global well-posedness for the 1D NLS with initial data lying in $L^{p}$ for any $2 < p < \infty$, provided the initial data is sufficiently smooth. We do not use the complete integrability of the cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation.
We consider the Derivative NLS equation with general quadratic nonlinearities. In \cite{be2} the first author has proved a sharp small data local well-posedness result in Sobolev spaces with a decay structure at infinity in dimension $n = 2$. Here we prove a similar result for large initial data in all dimensions $n \geq 2$.
We prove polynomial bounds on the growth of higher Sobolev norms for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation set on a torus, in dimension 3, with super-cubic and sub-quintic nonlinearity. Due to improved Strichartz estimates, these bounds are better for irrational tori than they are for rational tori.
We consider two classes of defocusing energy-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in dimensions $d\geq 5$. We prove that if the solution $u$ is apriorily bounded in the critical Sobolev space, that is, $u\in L_t^\infty \dot H^{s_c}_x$, then $u$ is global and scatters.
We revisit the scattering result of Holmer and Roudenko on the radial focusing cubic NLS in three space dimensions. Using the radial Sobolev embedding and a virial/Morawetz estimate, we give a simple proof of scattering below the ground state that avoids the use of concentration compactness.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous biharmonic nonlinear Schrödinger (IBNLS) equation \[iu_{t} +Δ^{2} u=λ|x|^{-b}|u|^σu,\;u(0)=u_{0} \in H^{s} (\mathbb R^{d}),\] where $λ\in \mathbb R$, $d\in \mathbb N$, $0\le s<\min\left\{2+\frac{d}{2},d\right\}$, $0<b<\min \left\{4,\; d-s,\; 2+\frac{d}{2}-s \right\}$ and $0<σ\le σ_{c}(s)$ with $σ<\infty$. Here $σ_{c}(s)=\frac{8-2b}{d-2s}$ if $s<\frac{d}{2}$, and $σ_{c}(s)=\infty$ if $s\ge \frac{d}{2}$. First, we give some remarks on Sobolev-Lorentz spaces and extend the chain rule under Lorentz norms for the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{s/2}$…
We prove non-existence of solutions for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the circle if initial data belong to $H^s(\mathbb{T}) \setminus L^2(\mathbb{T})$ for some $s \in (-\frac18, 0)$. The proof is based on establishing an a priori bound on solutions to a renormalized cubic NLS in negative Sobolev spaces via the short time Fourier restriction norm method.
We study growth of higher Sobolev norms of solutions to the one-dimensional periodic nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). By a combination of the normal form reduction and the upside-down I-method, we establish \|u(t)\|_{H^s} \lesssim (1+|t|)^{α(s-1)+} with α= 1 for a general power nonlinearity. In the quintic case, we obtain the above estimate with α= 1/2 via the space-time estimate due to Bourgain [4], [5]. In the cubic case, we concretely compute the terms arising in the first few steps of the normal form reduction and prove the above estimate with α= 4/9. These results improve the previou…
We study stability times for a family of parameter dependent nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the circle, close to the origin. Imposing a suitable Diophantine condition (first introduced by Bourgain), we prove a rather flexible Birkhoff Normal Form theorem, which implies, e.g., exponential and sub-exponential time estimates in the Sobolev and Gevrey class respectively.
We consider the initial-value problem for the $1d$ cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a repulsive delta potential. We prove that small initial data in a weighted Sobolev space lead to global solutions that decay in $L^\infty$ and exhibit modified scattering.

We investigate the existence of solutions to the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation $(-Δ)^s u = f(u)$ with prescribed $L^2$-norm $\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} |u|^2 \, dx =m$ in the Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R}^N)$. Under fairly general assumptions on the nonlinearity $f$, we prove the existence of a ground state solution and a multiplicity result in the radially symmetric case.
In this article, we study long time dynamics for defocusing cubic NLS on three dimensional product space. First, we apply the decoupling method in Bourgain-Demeter \cite{BD} to establish a bilinear Strichartz estimate. Moreover, we prove global well-posedness for defocusing, cubic NLS on three dimensional product space with rough initial data ($H^s$, $s>\frac{5}{6}$) based on I-method and the bilinear estimate. At last, we discuss the growth of higher Sobolev norm problem which is tightly linked to the weak turbulence phenomenon.
We consider the radial defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations $iu_t+Δu=|u|^{p}u$ with supercritical exponent $p>4$ in four space dimensions, and prove that any radial solution that remains bounded in the critical Sobolev space must be global and scatter.
The aim of this paper is to show the small data scattering for 2D ICQNLS: $$iu_t=-Δu + K_1(x)|u|^2u+K_2(x)|u|^4u.$$ Under the assumption that $\left| \partial^j K_l \right| \lesssim |x|^{b_l -j}$ for $j=0, 1, 2, l=1, 2$ and $0 \le b_l \le l - \frac23$, we prove the small data scattering in an angularly regular Sobolev space $H_θ^{1,1}$. We use the decaying property of angularly regular functions, which are defined as functions in Sobolev space $H_θ^{1, 1} \subset H^1$ with angular regularity such that $\|\partial_θf\|_{H^1} < \infty$, and also use the recently developed angularly averaged Stri…
We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation posed on product spaces $\mathbf R^n\times \mathcal M^k$, for $n\geq 1$ and $k\geq1$, with $\mathcal M^k$ any $k$-dimensional compact Riemaniann manifold. The main results concern global well-posedness and scattering for small data solutions in non-isotropic Sobolev fractional spaces. In the particular case of $k=2$, $H^1$-scattering is also obtained.
We consider a class of power-type nonlinear Schrödinger equations for which the power of the nonlinearity lies between the mass- and energy-critical exponents. Following the concentration-compactness approach, we prove that if a solution $u$ is bounded in the critical Sobolev space throughout its lifespan, that is, $u\in L_t^\infty \dot{H}_x^{s_c}$, then $u$ is global and scatters.
The defocusing NLS-equation $\mathrm{i} u_t = -u_{xx} + 2|u|^2u$ on the circle admits a global nonlinear Fourier transform, also known as Birkhoff map, linearising the NLS-flow. The regularity properties of $u$ are known to be closely related to the decay properties of the corresponding nonlinear Fourier coefficients. In this paper we quantify this relationship by providing two sided polynomial estimates of all integer Sobolev norms $\|u\|_m$, $m\ge 0$, in terms of the weighted norms of the nonlinear Fourier transformed.
We consider the defocusing quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in four space dimensions. We prove that any solution that remains bounded in the critical Sobolev space must be global and scatter. We employ a space-localized interaction Morawetz inequality, the proof of which requires us to overcome the logarithmic failure in the double Duhamel argument in four dimensions.
We consider the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two space dimensions. For this model, X. Cheng established scattering for $H^1$ data with mass strictly below that of the ground state for the cubic NLS. Subsequently, R. Carles and C. Sparber utilized the pseudoconformal energy estimate to obtain scattering at the sharp threshold for data belonging to a weighted Sobolev space. In this work, we remove the weighted assumption and establish scattering at the threshold for radial data in $H^1$.
We consider a class of defocusing energy-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in four space dimensions. Following a concentration-compactness approach, we show that for $1<s_c<3/2$, any solution that remains bounded in the critical Sobolev space $\dot{H}_x^{s_c}(\R^4)$ must be global and scatter. Key ingredients in the proof include a long-time Strichartz estimate and a frequency-localized interaction Morawetz inequality.
Solutions to the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the real line are studied in Sobolev spaces $H^s$, for $s$ negative but close to 0. For smooth solutions there is an {\em a priori} upper bound for the $H^s$ norm of the solution, in terms of the $H^s$ norm of the datum, for arbitrarily large data, for sufficiently short time. Weak solutions are constructed for arbitrary initial data in $H^s$.
This article explores the questions of long time orbital stability in high order Sobolev norms of plane wave solutions to the NLSE in the defocusing case.
In this article, we study the unconditional uniqueness of $\dot H^s$, $0<s< 1$, solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i\partial_t u +Δu+ c |u|^αu=0$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$. We give a unified proof of the previously known results in the subcritical cases and critical cases, and we also extend these results to some previously unsettled cases. Our proof uses in particular negative order Sobolev spaces (or Besov spaces), general Strichartz estimates, and the improved regularity property for the difference of two solutions.
We consider the continuous resonant (CR) system of the 2D cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation. This system arises in numerous instances as an effective equation for the long-time dynamics of NLS in confined regimes (e.g. on a compact domain or with a trapping potential). The system was derived and studied from a deterministic viewpoint in several earlier works, which uncovered many of its striking properties. This manuscript is devoted to a probabilistic study of this system. Most notably, we construct global solutions in negative Sobolev spaces, which leave Gibbs and white noise meas…
We consider the ill-posedness and well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the third order NLS equation with Raman scattering term on the one dimensional torus. It is regarded as a mathematical model for the photonic crystal fiber oscillator. Regarding the ill-posedness, we show the nonexistence of solutions in the Sobolev space and the norm inflation of the data-solution map under slightly different conditions, respectively. We also prove the local unique existence of solutions in the analytic function space.
We prove local in time well-posedness for a large class of quasilinear Hamiltonian, or parity preserving, Schrödinger equations on the circle. After a paralinearization of the equation, we perform several paradifferential changes of coordinates in order to transform the system into a paradifferential one with symbols which, at the positive order, are constant and purely imaginary. This allows to obtain a priori energy estimates on the Sobolev norms of the solutions.
