We consider the Derivative NLS equation with general quadratic nonlinearities. In \cite{be2} the first author has proved a sharp small data local well-posedness result in Sobolev spaces with a decay structure at infinity in dimension $n = 2$. Here we prove a similar result for large initial data in all dimensions $n \geq 2$.
We consider the derivative NLS equation in one spatial dimension, which is known to be completely integrable. We prove that the orbits of $L^2$ bounded and equicontinuous sets of initial data remain bounded and equicontinuous, not only under this flow, but under the entire hierarchy. This allows us to remove the small-data restriction from prior conservation laws and global well-posedness results.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the (derivative) nonlocal NLS in super-critical function spaces $E^s_σ$ for which the norms are defined by $$ \|f\|_{E^s_σ} = \|\langleξ\rangle^σ2^{s|ξ|}\hat{f}(ξ)\|_{L^2}, \ s<0, \ σ\in \mathbb{R}. $$ Any Sobolev space $H^{r}$ is a subspace of $E^s_σ$, i.e., $H^r \subset E^s_σ$ for any $ r,σ\in \mathbb{R}$ and $s<0$. Let $s<0$ and $σ>-1/2$ ($σ>0$) for the nonlocal NLS (for the nonlocal derivative NLS). We show the global existence and uniqueness of the solutions if the initial data belong to $E^s_σ$ and their Fourier transforms are supported in $(0, \infty)$…
We prove the existence of global solutions to the DNLS equation with initial data in a large subset of $H^2(\mathbb R)\cap H^{1,1}(\mathbb R)$ containing a neighborhood of all solitons. We use the inverse scattering transform method, which was recently developed by D. Pelinovsky and Y. Shimabukuro, and an auto-Bäcklund transform in order to include solitons.
We show that the 1d derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation (\ref{equ}) is globally well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb{R})$ for $s\geq 1/2$. We use the linear-nonlinear decomposition method to take advantage of the local smoothing effect of the nonlinearity, which enables us to establish a refined version of the almost conservation law. Note that $H^{1/2}$ is the endpoint that we have uniform continuous for the solution map and hence our result is sharp.
We study the periodic cubic derivative non-linear Schrödinger equation (dNLS) and the (focussing) quintic non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLS). These are both $L^2$ critical dispersive models, which exhibit threshold type behavior, when posed on the line ${\mathbb R}$. We describe the (three parameter) family of non-vanishing bell-shaped solutions for the periodic problem, in closed form. The main objective of the paper is to study their stability with respect to co-periodic perturbations. We analyze these waves for stability in the framework of the cubic DNLS. We provide a criteria for stabi…
We address existence of global solutions to the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation without the small-norm assumption. By using the inverse scattering transform method without eigenvalues and resonances, we construct a unique global solution in $H^2(\mathbb{R}) \cap H^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ which is also Lipschitz continuous with respect to the initial data. Compared to the existing literature on the spectral problem for the DNLS equation, the corresponding Riemann--Hilbert problem is defined in the complex plane with the jump on the real line.
The periodic DNLS gauge is an anticipative map with singular generator which revealed crucial in the study of the periodic derivative NLS. We prove quasi-invariance of the Gaussian measure on $L^2(\T)$ with covariance $[1+(-\D)^{s}]^{-1}$ under these transformations for any $s>\frac12$. This extends previous achievements by Nahmod, Ray-Bellet, Sheffield and Staffilani (2011) and Genovese, Lucà and Valeri (2018), who proved the result for integer values of the regularity parameter $s$.
In this paper we construct an invariant weighted Wiener measure associated to the periodic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation in one dimension and establish global well-posedness for data living in its support. In particular almost surely for data in a Fourier-Lebesgue space ${\mathcal F}L^{s,r}(\T)$ with $s \ge \frac{1}{2}$, $2 < r < 4$, $(s-1)r <-1$ and scaling like $H^{\frac{1}{2}-ε}(\T),$ for small $ε>0$. We also show the invariance of this measure.
We extend the global existence result for the derivative NLS equation to the case when the initial datum includes a finite number of solitons. This is achieved by an application of the Bäcklund transformation that removes a finite number of zeros of the scattering coefficient. By means of this transformation, the Riemann--Hilbert problem for meromorphic functions can be formulated as the one for analytic functions, the solvability of which was obtained recently.
We consider the Kawahara model and two fourth order semi-linear Schrödinger equations in any spatial dimension. We construct the corresponding normalized ground states, which we rigorously show to be spectrally stable. For the Kawahara model, our results provide a significant extension in parameter space of the current rigorous results. At the same time, we verify and clarify recent numerical simulations of the stability of these solitons. For the fourth order NLS models, we improve upon recent results on stability of very special, explicit solutions in the one dimensional case. Our multidimen…
In a case study for integrable PDEs, we construct real analytic, canonical coordinates for the defocusing NLS equation on the circle, specifically taylored towards the needs in perturbation theory. They are defined in neighbourhoods of families of finite dimensional invariant tori and are shown to satisfy together with their derivatives tame estimates. When expressed in these coordinates, the dNLS Hamiltonian is in normal form up to order three.
For nonlinear dispersive systems, the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation can usually be derived as a formal approximation equation describing slow spatial and temporal modulations of the envelope of a spatially and temporally oscillating underlying carrier wave. Here, we justify the NLS approximation for a whole class of quasilinear dispersive systems, which also includes toy models for the waterwave problem. This is the first time that this is done for systems, where a quasilinear quadratic term is allowed to effectively lose more than one derivative. With effective loss we here mean the lo…
We consider the periodic standing waves in the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation arising in plasma physics. By using a newly developed algebraic method with two eigenvalues, we classify all periodic standing waves in terms of eight eigenvalues of the Kaup-Newell spectral problem located at the end points of the spectral bands outside the real line. The analytical work is complemented with the numerical approximation of the spectral bands, this enables us to fully characterize the modulational instability of the periodic standing waves in the DNLS equation.
We propose integrable discretizations of derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equations such as the Kaup-Newell equation, the Chen-Lee-Liu equation and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation by constructing Lax pairs. The discrete DNLS systems admit the reduction of complex conjugation between two dependent variables and possess bi-Hamiltonian structure. Through transformations of variables and reductions, we obtain novel integrable discretizations of the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS), modified KdV (mKdV), mixed NLS, matrix NLS, matrix KdV, matrix mKdV, coupled NLS, coupled Hirota, coupled Sasa-Sats…
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of a quadratic Schrödinger equation with electromagnetic potentials. We prove that small solutions scatter. The proof builds on earlier work of the author for quadratic NLS with a non magnetic potential. The main novelty is the use of various smoothing estimates for the linear Schrödinger flow in place of boundedness of wave operators to deal with the loss of derivative. As a byproduct of the proof we obtain boundedness of the wave operator of the linear electromagnetic Schrödinger equation on an $L^2$ weighted space for small potentials, as well …
The derivative nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation is the canonical model for dynamics of nonlinear waves in plasma physics and optics. We study exact solutions describing rogue waves on the background of periodic standing waves in the DNLS equation. We show that the space-time localization of a rogue wave is only possible if the periodic standing wave is modulationally unstable. If the periodic standing wave is modulationally stable, the rogue wave solutions degenerate into algebraic solitons propagating along the background and interacting with the periodic standing waves. Maximal amplitud…
We refine and develop the inverse scattering theory on a lattice in such a way that the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice and derivative NLS lattices as well as their matrix analogs can be solved in a unified way. The inverse scattering method for the (matrix analog of the) Ablowitz-Ladik lattice is simplified to the same level as that for the continuous NLS system. Using the linear eigenfunctions of the Lax pair for the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice, we can construct solutions of the derivative NLS lattices such as the discrete Gerdjikov-Ivanov (also known as Ablowitz-Ramani-Segur) system and the discrete Kaup…
We consider the Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation and prove that the Gaussian measure with covariance $(1-\partial_x^2)^{-α}$ on $L^2(\mathbf T)$ is quasi-invariant for the associated flow for $α>1/2$. This is sharp and improves a previous result obtained in \cite{OTT} where the values $α>3/4$ were obtained. Also, our method is completely different and simpler, it is based on an explicit formula for the Radon-Nikodym derivative. We obtain an explicit formula for this latter in the same spirit as in \cite{Cruz1} and \cite{Cruz2}. The arguments are general and can be used to other Hamiltonian…
In this paper we study the cubic fractional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) on the torus and on the real line. Combining the normal form and the restricted norm methods we prove that the nonlinear part of the solution is smoother than the initial data. Our method applies to both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities. In the case of full dispersion (NLS) and on the torus, the gain is a full derivative, while on the real line we get a derivative smoothing with an $ε$ loss. Our result lowers the regularity requirement of a recent theorem of Kappeler et al. on the periodic defocusing cubic N…
We prove that there exist potentials so that near them the focusing non-linear Schrödinger equation does not admit local Birkhoff coordinates. The proof is based on the construction of a local normal form of the linearization of the equation at such potentials.
We investigate the existence of ground states for the focusing subcritical NLS energy on metric graphs with localized nonlinearities. In particular, we find two thresholds on the measure of the region where the nonlinearity is localized that imply, respectively, existence or nonexistence of ground states. In order to obtain these results we adapt to the context of metric graphs some classical techniques from the Calculus of Variations.
In this paper we prove local well-posedness of a space-time fractional generalization of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a power-type nonlinearity. The linear equation coincides with a model proposed by Naber, and displays a nonlocal behavior both in space and time which accounts for long-range interactions and a so-called memory effect. Because of a loss of derivatives produced by the latter and the lack of semigroup structure of the solution operator, we employ a strategy of proof based on exploiting some smoothing effect similar to that used by Kenig, Ponce and Vega for the KdV equa…
We consider the cubic Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation (NLS) in one space dimension, either focusing or defocusing. We prove that the solutions satisfy a-priori local in time Hs bounds in terms of the Hs size of the initial data for s >=-1/4 . This improves earlier results of Christ-Colliander-Tao [2] and of the authors [12]. The new ingredients are a localization in space and local energy decay, which we hope to be of independent interest.
Consider a branch of unstable solitons of NLS whose linearized operators have one pair of simple real eigenvalues in addition to the zero eigenvalue. Under radial symmetry and standard assumptions, solutions to initial data from a neighbourhood of the branch either converge to a soliton, or exit a larger neighbourhood of the branch transversally. The qualitative dynamic near a branch of unstable solitons is irrespective of whether blowup eventually occurs, which has practical implications for the description of blowup of NLS with supercritical nonlinearity.
In this paper, we characterize a family of solitary waves for NLS with derivative (DNLS) by the structue analysis and the variational argument. Since (DNLS) doesn't enjoy the Galilean invariance any more, the structure analysis here is closely related with the nontrivial momentum and shows the equivalence of nontrivial solutions between the quasilinear and the semilinear equations. Firstly, for the subcritical parameters $4ω>c^2$ and the critical parameters $4ω=c^2, c>0$, we show the existence and uniqueness of the solitary waves for (DNLS), up to the phase rotation and spatial translation sym…
The paper aims at giving a first insight on the existence/nonexistence of ground states for the $L^2$-critical NLS equation on metric graphs with localized nonlinearity. In particular, we focus on the tadpole graph, which, albeit being a toy model, allows to point out some specific features of the problem, whose understanding will be useful for future investigations.
We investigate the existence of multiple bound states of prescribed mass for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a noncompact metric graph. The main feature is that the nonlinearity is localized only in a compact part of the graph. Our main result states that for every integer k, the equation possesses at least k solutions of prescribed mass, provided that the mass is large enough. These solutions arise as constrained critical points of the NLS energy functional. Estimates for the energy of the solutions are also established.
In this paper we prove the existence of an invariant measure for the cubic NLS $$i\partial_t u + \bigtriangleup u - |u|^2 u = 0$$ on the real line in the sense that we prove the existence of a measure $ρ$ supported by non-localised functions such that there exists random variables $X(t)$ whose laws are $ρ$ (thus independent of $t$) and such that $t\mapsto X(t)$ is a solution to the cubic NLS. Our strategy for the proof is inspired by \cite{burqtzv} and relies on the application of Prokhorov and Skorokhod Theorems to a sequence of measures which are invariant under some approximating flows, as …
We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with the quadratic nonlinearity $|u|^2$, posed on the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. While the relevant $L^3$-Strichartz estimate is known only with a derivative loss, we prove local well-posedness of the quadratic NLS in $L^2(\mathbb{T}^2)$, thus resolving an open problem of thirty years since Bourgain (1993). In view of ill-posedness in negative Sobolev spaces, this result is sharp. We establish a crucial bilinear estimate by separately studying the non-resonant and nearly resonant cases. As a corollary, we obtain a tri-linear version …
The Fourier transforms of the products of two respectively three solutions of the free Schroedinger equation in one space dimension are estimated in mixed and, in the first case weighted, L^p - norms. Inserted into an appropriate variant of the Fourier restriction norm method, these estimates serve to prove local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the cubic nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation with data u_0 in the function space ^L^r:=^H^r_0, where for s \in R the spaces ^H^r_s are defined by the norms ||u_0||_{^H^r_s}:=||^u_0||_{L^r'_ξ}, 1/r + 1/r'=1. Similar arguments, combined with a…
We prove local in time well-posedness for a large class of quasilinear Hamiltonian, or parity preserving, Schrödinger equations on the circle. After a paralinearization of the equation, we perform several paradifferential changes of coordinates in order to transform the system into a paradifferential one with symbols which, at the positive order, are constant and purely imaginary. This allows to obtain a priori energy estimates on the Sobolev norms of the solutions.
Compared with macroscopic conservation law for the solution of the derivative nonlinear Schrödingger equation (DNLS) with small mass in \cite{KlausS:DNLS}, we show the corresponding microscopic conservation laws for the Schwartz solutions of DNLS with small mass. The new ingredient is to make use of the logarithmic perturbation determinant introduced in \cite{Rybkin:KdV:Cons Law, Simon:Trace} to show one-parameter family of microscopic conservation laws of the $A(κ)$ flow and the DNLS flow, which is motivated by \cite{HKV:NLS,KV:KdV:AnnMath,KVZ:KdV:GAFA}.
We prove new local and global well-posedness results for the cubic one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation in modulation spaces. Local results are obtained via multilinear interpolation. Global results are proven using conserved quantities based on the complete integrability of the equation, persistence of regularity, and by separating off the time evolution of finitely many Picard iterates.
The nonlinear Schrödinger equations with nonlinearities $|u|^{2k}u$ on the $d$-dimensional torus are considered for arbitrary positive integers $k$ and $d$. The solution of the Cauchy problem is shown to be unique in the class $C_tH^s_x$ for a certain range of scale-subcritical regularities $s$, which is almost optimal in the case $d\geq 4$ or $k\geq 2$. The proof is based on various multilinear estimates and the infinite normal form reduction argument.

This paper studies the quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with randomized initial data below the critical regularity $H^{\frac{d-1}{2}}$. The main result is a proof of almost sure local well-posedness given a Wiener Randomization of the data in $H^s$ for $s \in (\frac{d-2}{2}, \frac{d-1}{2})$. The argument further develops the techniques introduced in the work of Á. Bényi, T. Oh and O. Pocovnicu on the cubic problem. The paper concludes with a condition for almost sure global well-posedness.
We systematically report a rigorous theory of the inverse scattering transforms (ISTs) for the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation with both zero boundary condition (ZBC)/non-zero boundary conditions (NZBCs) at infinity and double poles of analytical scattering coefficients. The scattering theories for both ZBC and NZBCs are addressed. The direct problem establishes the analyticity, symmetries and asymptotic behavior of the Jost solutions and scattering matrix, and properties of discrete spectra. The inverse problems are formulated and solved with the aid of the matrix Riemann-Hil…
The Cauchy- and periodic boundary value problem for the nonlinear Schroedinger equations in $n$ space dimensions [u_t - iΔu = (\nabla \bar{u})^β, |β|=m \ge 2, u(0)=u_0 \in H^{s+1}_x] is shown to be locally well posed for $s > s_c := \frac{n}{2} - \frac{1}{m-1}$, $s \ge 0$. In the special case of space dimension $n=1$ a global $L^2$-result is obtained for NLS with the nonlinearity $N(u)= \partial_x (\bar{u} ^2)$. The proof uses the Fourier restriction norm method.
In this paper, we consider the cubic fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation (4NLS) under the periodic boundary condition. We prove two results. One is the local well-posedness in $H^s$ with $-1/3 \le s < 0$ for the Cauchy problem of the Wick ordered 4NLS. The other one is the non-squeezing property for the flow map of 4NLS in the symplectic phase space $L^2(\mathbb{T})$. To prove the former we used the ideas introduced in [Takaoka and Tsutsumi 2004] and [Nakanish et al 2010], and to prove the latter we used the ideas in [Colliander et al 2005].
We study the interaction of (slowly modulated) high frequency waves for multi-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations with gauge invariant power-law nonlinearities and non-local perturbations. The model includes the Davey--Stewartson system in its elliptic-elliptic and hyperbolic-elliptic variant. Our analysis reveals a new localization phenomenon for non-local perturbations in the high frequency regime and allows us to infer strong instability results on the Cauchy problem in negative order Sobolev spaces, where we prove norm inflation with infinite loss of regularity by a constructive ap…
Combining the usual energy functional with a higher-order conserved quantity originating from integrability theory, we show that the black soliton is a local minimizer of a quantity that is conserved along the flow of the cubic defocusing NLS equation in one space dimension. This unconstrained variational characterization gives an elementary proof of the orbital stability of the black soliton with respect to perturbations in $H^2(\mathbb{R})$.
In this article we study the asymptotic behavior of a quadratic NLS equation with small, time-dependent potential and small spatially localized initial data. We prove global existence and scattering of solutions. The two main ingredients of the proof are the space-time resonance method and the boundedness of wave operators for the linear Schrödinger equation with potential.
