We consider the zero viscosity limit of long time averages of solutions of damped and driven Navier-Stokes equations in ${\mathbb R}^2$. We prove that the rate of dissipation of enstrophy vanishes. Stationary statistical solutions of the damped and driven Navier-Stokes equations converge to renormalized stationary statistical solutions of the damped and driven Euler equations. These solutions obey the enstrophy balance.
In this article, I will report a Lax pair structure, a Backlund-Darboux transformation, and the investigation of homoclinic structures for 2D Euler equations of incompressible inviscid fluids.
Nadirashvili presented a beautiful example showing that the Poincaré recurrence does not occur near a particular solution to the 2D Euler equation of inviscid incompressible fluids. Unfortunately, Nadirashvili's setup of the phase space is not appropriate, and details of the proof are missing. This note fixes that.
We consider the plasma-vacuum interface problem in a horizontally periodic slab impressed by a uniform non-horizontal magnetic field. The lower plasma region is governed by the incompressible inviscid and resistive MHD, the upper vacuum region is governed by the pre-Maxwell equations, and the effect of surface tension is taken into account on the free interface. The global well-posedness of the problem, supplemented with physical boundary conditions, around the equilibrium is established, and the solution is shown to decay to the equilibrium almost exponentially. Our results reveal the strong …
We consider the inviscid limit of the stochastic damped 2D Navier- Stokes equations. We prove that, when the viscosity vanishes, the stationary solution of the stochastic damped Navier-Stokes equations converges to a stationary solution of the stochastic damped Euler equation and that the rate of dissipation of enstrophy converges to zero. In particular, this limit obeys an enstrophy balance. The rates are computed with respect to a limit measure of the unique invariant measure of the stochastic damped Navier-Stokes equations.
Singular vorticty solutions of the incompressible 3D-Euler equation are constructed which satisfy the BKM criterion (cf. [2]). The construction is done by inviscid limits of vorticity solutions of transformed incompressible Navier Stokes type equations with a damping potential term, where the latter equations admit a global regular solution for positive viscosity. The inviscid limit vorticity solution of the incompressible Euler vorticity equation becomes singular at a point of the boundary of a finite domain.
In this paper we study the incompressible inviscid limit for a compressible micro-polar model. We prove that the weak solution of the compressible micro-polar system converges to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations (Euler equations) in the limit of small Mach number (and vanishing viscosity).
IIn the paper, we consider the inviscid, incompressible and semiclassical limits limits of the barotropic quantum Navier-Stokes equations of compressible flows in a periodic domain. We show that the limit solutions satisfy the incompressible Euler system based on the relative entropy inequality and on the detailed analysis for general initial data. The rate of convergence is estimated in terms of the Mach number.
Chemin has shown that solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the plane for an incompressible fluid whose initial vorticity is bounded and lies in L^2 converge in the zero-viscosity limit in the L^2-norm to a solution of the Euler equations, convergence being uniform over any finite time interval. Yudovich, assuming an initial vorticity lying in L^p for all p >= q for some q, established the uniqueness of solutions to the Euler equations for an incompressible fluid in a bounded domain of n-space assuming a particular bound on the growth of the L^p-norm of the initial vorticity as p grows l…
We consider the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the singular limit for the small Mach and large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, with ill prepared initial data on the three dimensional Euclidean space. The Euler-Boussinesq approximation is identified as the limit system.
In this paper, we prove that as the viscosity and resistivity go to zero, the solution of the Cauchy problem for the incompressible MHD equations converges to the solution of the ideal MHD equations in the same topology with the initial data. Our proof mainly depends on the method introduced by the paper \cite{G.L.Y} and the constructions of the incompressible MHD equations.
In [1], T. Clopeau, A. Mikelić, and R. Robert studied the inviscid limit of the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain subject to Navier friction-type boundary conditions. They proved that the inviscid limit satisfies the incompressible Euler equations and their result ultimately includes flows generated by bounded initial vorticities. Our purpose in this article is to adapt and, to some extent, simplify their argument in order to include $p$-th power integrable initial vorticities, with $p>2$. [1] Clopeau, T., Mikelić, A., Robert, R., {\it On the vanishing viscosity lim…
In this paper, we consider the inviscid limit of inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations under the weak Kolmogorov hypothesis in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In particular, we first deduce the Kolmogorov-type hypothesis in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which yields the uniform bounds of $α^{th}$-order fractional derivatives of $\sqrt{ρ^μ}{\bf u}^μ$ in $L^2_x$ for some $α>0$, independent of the viscosity. The uniform bounds can provide strong convergence of $\sqrt{ρ^μ}\bf u^μ$ in $L^2$ space. This shows that the inviscid limit is a weak solution to the corresponding Euler equations.
We discuss general incompressible inviscid models, including the Euler equations, the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, incompressible porous medium equation, and Boussinesq equations. All these models have classical unique solutions, at least for short time. We show that they have real analytic Lagrangian paths. More precisely, we show that as long as a solution of any of these equations is in a class of regularity that assures Hölder continuous gradients of velocity, the corresponding Lagrangian paths are real analytic functions of time. The method of proof is conceptually straightforward …
We consider a coupled system of partial and ordinary differential equations describing the interaction between an isentropic inviscid fluid and a rigid body moving freely inside the fluid. We prove the existence of measure-valued solutions which is generated by the vanishing viscosity limit of incompressible fluid-rigid body interaction system under some physically constitutive relations. Moreover, we show that the measure-value solution coincides with strong solution on the interval of its existence. This relies on the weak-strong uniqueness analysis.
We consider the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the singular regime of small Mach and large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, with ill prepared initial data on an unbounded domain in the three dimensional Euclidean space with a compact boundary. We perform the singular limit in the framework of weak solutions and identify the Euler-Boussinesq system as the target problem.
In the present paper, we prove the a priori estimates of Sobolev norms for a free boundary problem of the incompressible inviscid MHD equations in all physical spatial dimensions $n=2$ and 3 by adopting a geometrical point of view used in Christodoulou-Lindblad CPAM 2000, and estimating quantities such as the second fundamental form and the velocity of the free surface. We identify the well-posedness condition that the outer normal derivative of the total pressure including the fluid and magnetic pressures is negative on the free boundary, which is similar to the physical condition (Taylor sig…
We initiate the study of stability of solutions of the 2D inviscid incompressible porous medium equation (IPM). We begin by classifying all stationary solutions of the inviscid IPM under mild conditions. We then prove some linear stability results. We then study solutions of the IPM equation which are sufficiently regular perturbations of linearly stable steady states. We prove that sufficiently regular perturbations which are also small must be globally regular and strongly converge to a steady state. The mechanism behind the stability is \emph{stratification} as opposed to previous stability…
We prove the asymptotic stability of shear flows close to the Couette flow for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, if the initial velocity is close to the Couette flow and the initial density is close to a positive constant in the Gevrey class 2, then 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations are globally well-posed and the velocity converges strongly to a shear flow close to the Couette flow, and the vorticity will be driven to small scales by a linear evolution and weakly converges as $t\to \infty$. To our knowledge, t…
We obtain a result about propagation of geometric properties for solutions of the non-homogeneous incompressible Euler system in any dimension $N\geq2$. In particular, we investigate conservation of striated and conormal regularity, which is a natural way of generalizing the 2-D structure of vortex patches. The results we get are only local in time, even in the dimension N=2; however, we provide an explicit lower bound for the lifespan of the solution. In the case of physical dimension N=2 or 3, we investigate also propagation of Hölder regularity in the interior of a bounded domain.
We consider the dynamics of a layer of an incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic field in a two-dimensional horizontally periodic setting. The upper boundary is in contact with the atmosphere, and the lower boundary is a rigid flat bottom. We prove the global well-posedness of the inviscid and resistive problem with surface tension around a non-horizontal uniform magnetic field; moreover, the solution decays to the equilibrium almost exponentially. One of the key observations here is an induced damping structure for the fluid vorticity due to the resistivity…
We prove the inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the same topology of Besov spaces as the initial data. The proof is based on proving the continuous dependence of the Navier-Stokes equations uniformly with respect to the viscosity. To show the latter, we rely on some Bona-Smith type method in the $L^p$ setting. Our obtained result implies a new result that the Cauchy problem of the Euler equations is locally well-posed in the borderline Besov space $B^{\frac dp+1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $1\leq p\leq \infty$, $d\geq 2$, in the sense of Hadmard, which is an open proble…
We prove local-in-time existence and uniqueness of an inviscid Boussinesq-type system. We assume the density equation contains nonzero diffusion and that our initial vorticity and density belong to a space of borderline Besov type.
We study singular limit for scaled barotropic Euler system modelling a rotating, compressible and inviscid fluid, where Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to a small parameter $ε$. If the fluid is confined to an infinite slab, the limit behaviour is identified as a horizontal motion of an incompressible inviscid system that is analogous to the Euler system. We consider a very general class of solutions, named dissipative solution for the scaled compressible Euler systems and will show that it converges to a strong solution of that incompressible inviscid system.
We consider $L^2$ minimizing geodesics along the group of volume preserving maps $SDiff(D)$ of a given 3-dimensional domain $D$. The corresponding curves describe the motion of an ideal incompressible fluid inside $D$ and are (formally) solutions of the Euler equations. It is known that there is a unique possible pressure gradient for these curves whenever their end points are fixed. In addition, this pressure field has a limited but unconditional (internal) regularity. The present paper completes these results by showing: 1) the uniqueness property can be viewed as an infinite dimensional phe…
We prove higher-order and a Gevrey class (spatial analytic) regularity of solutions to the Euler-Voigt inviscid $α$-regularization of the three-dimensional Euler equations of ideal incompressible fluids. Moreover, we establish the convergence of strong solutions of the Euler-Voigt model to the corresponding solution of the three-dimensional Euler equations for inviscid flow on the interval of existence of the latter. Furthermore, we derive a criterion for finite-time blow-up of the Euler equations based on this inviscid regularization. The coupling of a magnetic field to the Euler-Voigt model …
In this paper, we consider the inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a smooth, bounded and simply connected domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d, d=2,3$. We prove that for a vortex patch initial data the weak Leray solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier boundary conditions will converge (locally in time for $d=3$ and globally in time for $d=2$) to a vortex patch solution of the incompressible Euler equation as the viscosity vanishes. In view of the results obtained in [1] and [19] which dealt with the case of the whole space, we derive an almost …
In this article we consider weak solutions of the three-dimensional incompressible fluid flow equations with initial data admitting a one-dimensional symmetry group. We examine both the viscous and inviscid cases. For the case of viscous flows, we prove that Leray-Hopf weak solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations preserve initially imposed symmetry and that such symmetric flows are stable under general three-dimensional perturbations, globally in time. We work in three different contexts: two-and-a-half-dimensional, helical and axi-symmetric flows. In the inviscid case, we o…
We study the convergence rate of the solutions of the incompressible Euler-$α$, an inviscid second-grade complex fluid, equations to the corresponding solutions of the Euler equations, as the regularization parameter $α$ approaches zero. First we show the convergence in $H^{s}$, $s>n/2+1$, in the whole space, and that the smooth Euler-$α$ solutions exist at least as long as the corresponding solution of the Euler equations. Next we estimate the convergence rate for two-dimensional vortex patch with smooth boundaries.
We study the inviscid limit problem of the incompressible flows in the presence of both impermeable regular boundaries and a hypersurface transversal to the boundary across which the inviscid flow has a discontinuity jump. In the former case, boundary layers have been introduced by Prandtl as correctors near the boundary between the inviscid and viscous flows. In the latter case, the viscosity smoothes out the discontinuity jump by creating a transition layer which has the same amplitude and thickness as the Prandtl layer. In the neighborhood of the intersection of the impermeable boundary and…
In this article, we study the solutions of the damped Navier--Stokes equation with Navier boundary condition in a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with smooth boundary. The existence of the solutions is global with the damped term $\vartheta |u|^{β-1}u, \vartheta >0.$ The regularity and uniqueness of solutions with Navier boundary condition is also studied. This extends the existing results in literature.
The global regularity problem concerning the inviscid Boussinesq equations remains an open problem. In an attempt to understand this problem, we examine the damped Boussinesq equations and study how damping affects the regularity of solutions. In this paper, we consider the global existence to the damped Boussinesq equations with a class of large initial data, whose $B^{s}_{p,r}$ or $\dot{B}^{s}_{p,r}$ norms can be arbitrarily large. The idea is splitting the linear Boussinesq equations from the damped Boussinesq equations, the exponentially decaying solution of the former equations together w…
We revisit a family of infinite-energy solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations proposed by Gibbon et al. [9] and shown to blowup in finite time by Constantin [6]. By adding a damping term to the momentum equation we examine how the damping coefficient can arrest this blowup. Further, we show that similar infinite-energy solutions of the inviscid 3D Boussinesq system with damping can develop a singularity in finite time as long as the damping effects are insufficient to arrest the (undamped) 3D Euler blowup in the associated damped 3D Euler system.
We show that certain singular structures (Hölderian cusps and mild divergences) are transported by the flow of homeomorphisms generated by an Osgood velocity field. The structure of these singularities is related to the modulus of continuity of the velocity and the results are shown to be sharp in the sense that slightly more singular structures cannot generally be propagated. For the 2D Euler equation, we prove that certain singular structures are preserved by the motion, e.g. a system of $\log\log_+(1/|x|)$ vortices (and those that are slightly less singular) travel with the fluid in a nonli…
This paper provides results on local and global existence for a class of solutions to the Euler equations for an incompressible, inviscid fluid. By considering a class of solutions which exhibits a characteristic growth at infinity we obtain an initial value problem for a nonlocal equation. We establish local well-posedness in all dimensions and persistence in time of these solutions for three and higher dimensions. We also examine a weaker class of global solutions.
Some classical and recent results on the Euler equations governing perfect (incompressible and inviscid) fluid motion are collected and reviewed, with some small novelties scattered throughout. The perspective and emphasis will be given through the lens of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems, and various open problems are listed and discussed.
Following Arnold's geometric interpretation, the Euler equations of an incompressible fluid moving in a domain D are known to be the optimality equation of the minimizing geodesic problem along the group of orientation and volume preserving diffeomorphisms of D. This problem admits a well-established convex relaxation which generates a set of "relaxed", "multi-stream", version of the Euler equations. However, it is unclear that such relaxed equations are appropriate for the initial value problem and the theory of turbulence, due to their lack of well-posedness for most initial data. As an atte…
We consider a class of viscous fluids with a general monotone dependence of the viscous stress on the symmetric velocity gradient. We introduce the concept of dissipative solution to the associated initial boundary value problem inspired by the measure-valued solutions for the inviscid (Euler) system. We show the existence as well as the weak-strong uniqueness property in the class of dissipative solutions. Finally, the dissipative solution enjoying certain extra regularity coincides with a strong solution of the same problem.
We give lower bounds for the lifespan of a solution to the inviscid Boussinesq system. In dimension two, we point out that it tends to infinity when the initial (relative) temperature tends to zero. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first result of this kind for the inviscid Boussinesq system. In passing, we provide continuation criteria (of independent interest) in the $N$-dimensional case. In the second part of the paper, our method is adapted to handle the axisymmetric incompressible Euler equations with swirl.
The validity of the vanishing viscosity limit, that is, whether solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations modeling viscous incompressible flows converge to solutions of the Euler equations modeling inviscid incompressible flows as viscosity approaches zero, is one of the most fundamental issues in mathematical fluid mechanics. The problem is classified into two categories: the case when the physical boundary is absent, and the case when the physical boundary is present and the effect of the boundary layer becomes significant. The aim of this article is to review recent progress on the mathemati…
The issue of the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations when a no-slip condition is prescribed on the boundary is a famous open problem. A result by Tosio Kato says that convergence to the Euler equations holds true in the energy space if and only if the energy dissipation rate of the viscous flow in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity vanishes. Of course, if one considers the motion of a solid body in an incompressible fluid, with a no-slip condition at the interface, the issue of the inviscid limit is as least as difficult. However it is not clear i…
We construct families of smooth travelling-wave solutions to the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation (SQG). These solutions can be viewed as the equivalents for this equation of the vortex anti-vortex pairs in the context of the incompressible Euler equation. Our argument relies on the stream function formulation and eventually amounts to solving a fractional nonlinear elliptic equation by variational methods.
We investigate the singularity formation of a 3D model that was recently proposed by Hou and Lei in [16] for axisymmetric 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with swirl. The main difference between the 3D model of Hou and Lei and the reformulated 3D Navier-Stokes equations is that the convection term is neglected in the 3D model. This model shares many properties of the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. One of the main results of this paper is that we prove rigorously the finite time singularity formation of the 3D inviscid model for a class of initial boundary value problems wi…
We prove the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for data that are analytic only near the boundary in a general two-dimensional bounded domain. Our proof is direct, using the vorticity formulation with a nonlocal boundary condition, the explicit semigroup of the linear Stokes problem near the flatten boundary, and the standard wellposedness theory of Navier-Stokes equations in Sobolev spaces away from the boundary.
In their classical work [20], Caflisch and Sammartino established the inviscid limit and boundary layer expansions of vanishing viscosity solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for analytic data on a half-space. It was then subsequently announced in their Comptes rendus article [4] that the results can be extended to include analytic data on an exterior circular domain, however the proof appears missing in the literature. The extension to an exterior domain faces a fundamental difficulty that the corresponding linear semigroup may not be contractive in analytic spaces as was t…
We formulate a stochastic least-action principle for solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, which formally reduces to Hamilton's principle for the incompressible Euler solutions in the case of zero viscosity. We use this principle to give a new derivation of a stochastic Kelvin Theorem for the Navier-Stokes equation, recently established by Constantin and Iyer, which shows that this stochastic conservation law arises from particle-relabelling symmetry of the action. We discuss issues of irreversibility, energy dissipation, and the inviscid limit of Navier-Stokes solutions in t…
In this paper we investigate the inviscid limit $ν\to 0$ for time-quasi-periodic solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the two-dimensional torus ${\mathbb T}^2$, with a small time-quasi-periodic external force. More precisely, we construct solutions of the forced Navier Stokes equation, bifurcating from a given time quasi-periodic solution of the incompressible Euler equations and admitting vanishing viscosity limit to the latter, uniformly for all times and independently of the size of the external perturbation. Our proof is based on the construction of an approximate sol…
