This paper provides results on local and global existence for a class of solutions to the Euler equations for an incompressible, inviscid fluid. By considering a class of solutions which exhibits a characteristic growth at infinity we obtain an initial value problem for a nonlocal equation. We establish local well-posedness in all dimensions and persistence in time of these solutions for three and higher dimensions. We also examine a weaker class of global solutions.
A new concept of semi-compressible fluids is introduced for slightly compressible visco-elastic fluids (typically rather liquids than gasses) where mass density variations are negligible in some sense, while being directly controlled by pressure which is very small in comparison with the elastic bulk modulus. The physically consistent fully Eulerian models with specific dispersion of pressure-wave speed are devised. This contrasts to the so-called quasi-incompressible fluids which are described not physically consistently and, in fact, only approximate ideally incompressible ones in the limit.…
In the analysis of the long-time behaviour of two-dimensional incompressible viscous fluids, Oseen vortices play a major role as attractors of any homogeneous solution with integrable initial vorticity. As a first step in the study of the density-dependent case, the present paper establishes the asymptotic stability of Oseen vortices for slighty inhomogeneous fluids with respect to localized regular perturbations.
We study an initial-boundary-value problem for time-dependent flows of heat-conducting viscous incompressible fluids in channel-like domains on a time interval $(0,T)$. For the parabolic system with strong nonlinearities and including the artificial (the so called "do nothing") boundary conditions, we prove the local in time existence, global uniqueness and smoothness of the solution on a time interval $(0,T^*)$, where $0< T^* \leq T$.
A new proof is given of the fact that the particle trajectories of the ideal incompressible fluid are analytic curves, though the solutions of the Euler equations may have a finite regularity. This is a consequence of a general fact that the geodesic exponential map on the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms belonging to the Sobolev space is real-analytic. The proof is based on the general properties of holomorphic maps in complex Banach spaces.
In this paper we study the solvability of different boundary value problems for the two dimensional steady incompressible Euler equation. Two main methods are currently available to study those problems, namely the Grad-Shafranov method and the vorticity transport method. We describe for which boundary value problems these methods can be applied. The obtained solutions have non-vanishing vorticity.
In this study we are interested in the Navier-Stokes-like system for generalized viscous fluids whose viscosity has a power-structure with exponent q. We develop an existence theory of periodic in time weak solutions to the three-dimensional flows subject to a periodic in time force datum whenever q>6/5, which is the optimal bound for the existence of weak solutions.
In this article, I will report a Lax pair structure, a Backlund-Darboux transformation, and the investigation of homoclinic structures for 2D Euler equations of incompressible inviscid fluids.
We consider a class of viscous fluids with a general monotone dependence of the viscous stress on the symmetric velocity gradient. We introduce the concept of dissipative solution to the associated initial boundary value problem inspired by the measure-valued solutions for the inviscid (Euler) system. We show the existence as well as the weak-strong uniqueness property in the class of dissipative solutions. Finally, the dissipative solution enjoying certain extra regularity coincides with a strong solution of the same problem.
We consider the abstract initial value problem for the system of evolution equations which describe motion of incompressible viscous and heat-conductive fluids in a bounded domain. It is difficulty of our problem that we do not neglect the viscous dissipation function in contrast to the Boussinesq approximation. This problem has uniquely a mild solution locally in time for general initial data, and globally in time for small initial data. Moreover, a mild solution of this problem can be a strong or classical solution under appropriate assumptions for initial data. We prove the above properties…
We introduce a new sharp interface model for the flow of two immiscible, viscous, incompressible fluids. In contrast to classical models for two-phase flows we prescribe an evolution law for the interfaces that takes diffusional effects into account. This leads to a coupled system of Navier-Stokes and Mullins-Sekerka type parts that coincides with the asymptotic limit of a diffuse interface model. We prove the long-time existence of weak solutions, which is an open problem for the classical two-phase model. We show that the phase interfaces have in almost all points a generalized mean curvatur…
Nadirashvili presented a beautiful example showing that the Poincaré recurrence does not occur near a particular solution to the 2D Euler equation of inviscid incompressible fluids. Unfortunately, Nadirashvili's setup of the phase space is not appropriate, and details of the proof are missing. This note fixes that.
It is proven that the only incompressible Euler fluid flows with fixed straight streamlines are those generated by the normal lines to a round sphere, a circular cylinder or a flat plane, the fluid flow being that of a point source, a line source or a plane source at infinity, respectively. The proof uses the local differential geometry of oriented line congruences to integrate the Euler equations explicitly.
In this paper we derive a class of thermodynamically consistent diffuse-interface mixture models of incompressible multicomponent fluids. The class of mixture models is fully compatible with the continuum theory of mixtures. The resulting mixture models may be formulated either in constituent or in mixture quantities. This permits a direct comparison with the Navier-Stokes Cahn-Hilliard model with non-matching densities, which reveals the key modeling simplifications of the latter.
In this paper, we consider the interactions between a rigid body of general form and the incompressible perfect fluid surrounding it. Local well-posedness in the space $C([0, T); H_s)$ is obtained for the fluid-rigid body system.
In this paper we prove that the motion of a solid body in a two dimensional incompressible perfect fluid converges, when the body shrinks to a point with fixed mass and circulation, to a variant of the vortex-wave system where the vortex, placed in the point occupied by the shrunk body, is accelerated by a lift force similar to the Kutta-Joukowski force of the irrotational theory.
The author studies the flows of an ideal incompressible fluid in a 2-dimensional domain, and in particular questions of instability and controllability.
We introduce a novel concept of dissipative measure-valued martingale solution to the stochastic Euler equations describing the motion of an inviscid incompressible fluid. These solutions are characterized by a parametrized Young measure and a concentration defect measure in the total energy balance. Moreover, they are weak in the probablistic sense i.e., the underlying probablity space and the driving Wiener process are intrinsic part of the solution. In a significant departure from the existing literature, we first exhibit the relative energy inequality for the incompressible Euler equations…
In Part II of the paper, we prove linear instability of a certain class of radially symmetric flows of an ideal incompressible fluid in dimension two used in Part I
This article is a survey concerning the state-of-the-art mathematical theory of the Euler equations of incompressible homogenous ideal fluid. Emphasis is put on the different types of emerging instability, and how they may be related to the description of turbulence.
We study the shape differentiability of a general functional depending on the solution of a bidimensional stationary Stokes-Elasticity system, with respect to the reference domain of the elastic structure immersed in a viscous fluid. The differentiability with respect to reference elastic domain variations are considered under shape perturbations with diffeomorphisms. The shape-derivative is then calculated with the use of the velocity method. This derivative involves the material derivatives of the solution of this Fluid-Structure Interaction problem. The adjoint method is used to obtain a si…
In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid when some Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the body's boundary. The whole `viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body' system is assumed to occupy the full plane $\R^{2}$. We prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions with constant non-zero circulation at infinity.
In this paper we derive various sufficient conditions on the pressure for vanishing velocity in the incompressible Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations in $\Bbb R^N$.
Lie symmetry group method is applied to study Newtonian incompressible fluid's equations flow in turbulent boundary layers. The symmetry group and its optimal system are given, and group invariant solutions associated to the symmetries are obtained. Finally the structure of the Lie algebra symmetries is determined.
In this paper, we construct a class global large solution to the 3D incompressible micropolar fluid system. Precisely speaking, by choosing a special initial data which can be arbitrarily large in $\dot{B}^{-1}_{\infty,\infty}$, the system has a unique global solution.
We investigate multidimensional model for incompressible non-Newtonian fluids. Using method of energy estimates we prove the property of finite speed of propagations of the solution support for this problem. We find sharp bounds of the propagations by $L^2$--norm and $L^1$--norm of initial data.
In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body immersed in a two dimensional unbounded incompressible perfect fluid with vorticity. We prove that when the body shrinks to a massless pointwise particle with fixed circulation, the "fluid+rigid body" system converges to the vortex-wave system introduced by Marchioro and Pulvirenti in [11]. This extends both the paper [2] where the case of a solid tending to a massive pointwise particle was tackled and the paper [3] where the massless case was considered but in a bounded cavity filled with an irrotational fluid.
We give an overview on the solution of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations for non newtonian incompressible fluids established by G. Dias and M.M. Santos (Steady flow for shear thickening fluids with arbitrary fluxes, J. Differential Equations 252 (2012), no. 6, 3873-3898)*, propose a definition for domains with unbounded curved channels which encompasses domains with an unbounded boundary, domains with nozzles, and domains with a boundary being a punctured surface, and argue on the existence of steady flow for incompressible fluids with arbitrary fluxes in such domains. *Cf. In this paper we study the incompressible inviscid limit for a compressible micro-polar model. We prove that the weak solution of the compressible micro-polar system converges to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations (Euler equations) in the limit of small Mach number (and vanishing viscosity).
In Part I of the paper, we prove non-uniqueness of the solution to the Cauchy problem of the Euler equations of an ideal incompressible fluid in dimension two with vorticity in some Lebesgue space. The radially symmetric external force is locally integrable with values in the same Lebesgue space.
The existence of weak solutions to the "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system with Navier slip-with-friction conditions in a 3D bounded domain has been recently proved by Gérard-Varet and Hillairet in \cite{exi:GeH}. In 2D for a fluid alone (without any rigid body) it is well-known since Leray that weak solutions are unique, continuous in time with $ L^{2} $ regularity in space and satisfy the energy equality. In this paper we prove that these properties also hold for the 2D "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system.
We are interested in studying an unsteady fluid-structure interaction problem in a three-dimensional space. We consider a homogeneous Newtonian fluid which is modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations. Whereas the motion of the structure is described by the quasi-incompressible non-linear Saint Venant-Kirchhoff model. We establish the local in time existence and uniqueness of solution for this model. For this sake, first we rewrite the non-linearity of the elastodynamic equation in an explicit way. Then, a linearized problem is introduced in the Lagrangian reference configuration and we prove tha…
We consider the time-dependent compressible Navier--Stokes equations in the low Mach number regime in a family of domains $Ω_ε\subset R^d$ converging in the sense of Mosco to a domain $Ω\subset R^d$, $d \in \{2,3\}$. We show the limit is the incompressible Navier--Stokes system in $Ω$.
In this paper, we are interested in the dynamics of charged particles interacting with the incompressible viscous flow. More precisely, we consider the Vlasov-Poisson or Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equation coupled with the incompressible Navier-Stokes system through the drag force. For the proposed kinetic-fluid model, we study the asymptotic regime corresponding to strong local alignment and diffusion forces. Under suitable assumptions on the initial data, we rigorously derive a coupled isothermal/pressureless Euler-Poisson system and incompressible Navier-Stokes system(in short, EPNS syste…
In this paper we analyze the interaction of an incompressible Newtonian fluid with a linearly elastic Koiter shell whose motion is restricted to transverse displacements. The middle surface of the shell constitutes the mathematical boundary of the threedimensional fluid domain. We show that weak solutions exist as long as the magnitude of the displacement stays below some (possibly large) bound which is determined by the geometry of the undeformed shell.
We consider the motion of a compressible viscous fluid containing a moving rigid body confined to a planar domain $Ω\subset R^2$. The main result states that the influence of the body on the fluid is negligible if (i) the diameter of the body is small and (ii) the fluid is nearly incompressible (the low Mach number regime). The specific shape of the body as well as the boundary conditions on the fluid--body interface are irrelevant and collisions with the boundary $\partial Ω$ are allowed. The rigid body motion may be enforced externally or governed solely by its interaction with the fluid.
We consider a coupled system of partial and ordinary differential equations describing the interaction between an isentropic inviscid fluid and a rigid body moving freely inside the fluid. We prove the existence of measure-valued solutions which is generated by the vanishing viscosity limit of incompressible fluid-rigid body interaction system under some physically constitutive relations. Moreover, we show that the measure-value solution coincides with strong solution on the interval of its existence. This relies on the weak-strong uniqueness analysis.
This paper is devoted to the existence of a weak solution to a system describing a self-propelled motion of a rigid body in a viscous fluid in the whole $\mathbb{R}^3$. The fluid is modelled by the incompressible nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system with a nonnegative density. The motion of the rigid body is described by the balance of linear and angular momentum. We consider the case where slip is allowed at the fluid-solid interface through Navier condition and prove the global existence of a weak solution.
In this paper, we justify the convergence from the two-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (in briefly,VPB) system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (in briefly, NSFP) system with Ohm's law in the context of classical solutions. We prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ for the solutions to the two-species VPB system near equilibrium by treating the strong interspecies interactions. Consequently, we prove the convergence to the two-fluid incompressible NSFP as $\varepsilon$ go to 0.
We are concerned with the well-posedness of the density-dependent incompressible viscoelastic fluid system. By Schauder-Tychonoff fixed point argument, when $\|{1}/{ρ_0}-1\|_{\dot{B}_{p,1}^{{N}/{p}}}$ is small, local well-posedness is showed to hold in Besov space. Furthermore, provided the initial data $(1/ρ_0 -1,\upsilon_0,U_0-I)$ is small under certain norm, we also get the existence of the global solution.
The present work is devoted to the analysis of density-dependent, incompressible fluids in a 3D torus, when the Froude number $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. We consider the very general case where the initial data do not have a zero horizontal average, where we only have smoothing effect on the velocity but not on the density and where we can have resonant phenomena on the domain. We explicitly determine the limit system when $\varepsilon \to 0$ and prove its global wellposedness. Finally, we prove that for large initial data, the density-dependent, incompressible fluid system is globally wellpos…

We study the shape differentiability of a cost function for the flow of an incompressible viscous fluid of power-law type. The fluid is confined to a bounded planar domain surrounding an obstacle. For smooth perturbations of the shape of the obstacle we express the shape gradient of the cost function which can be subsequently used to improve the initial design.
In this paper we study the evolution of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid, in particular we show that a small particle is not accelerated by the fluid in the limit when its size converges to zero under a lower bound on its mass. This result is based on a new a priori estimate on the velocities of the centers of mass of rigid bodies that holds in the case when their masses are also allowed to decrease to zero.
In their seminal paper "Oscillations and concentrations in weak solutions of the incompressible fluid equations", R. DiPerna and A. Majda introduced the notion of measure-valued solution for the incompressible Euler equations in order to capture complex phenomena present in limits of approximate solutions, such as persistence of oscillation and development of concentrations. Furthermore, they gave several explicit examples exhibiting such phenomena. In this paper we show that any measure-valued solution can be generated by a sequence of exact weak solutions. In particular this gives rise to a …
Consider two compressible immiscible fluids in 1D in the isentropic approximation. The first fluid is surrounded and in contact with the second one. As the Mach number of the first fluid vanishes, the coupled dynamics of the two fluids results as the compressible to incompressible limit and is known to satisfy an ODE--PDE system. Below, a characterization of this limit is provided, ensuring its uniqueness.
This note studies a family of Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn systems parameterized by temperature. Derived from an internal energy that corresponds to one incompressible and one compressible phase, this family is considered as a simple model for water. Decreasing temperature across a critical value, a transition takes places from a situation without towards one with planar diffuse phase boundaries.
In this paper we consider the local and global well-posedness to the density-dependent incompressible viscoelastic fluids. We first study some linear models associated to the incompressible viscoelastic system. Then we approximate the system by a sequence of ordinary differential equations, by means of the Friedrichs method. Some uniform estimates for those solutions will be obtained. Using compactness arguments, we will get the local existence up to extracting a subsequence by means of Ascoli's lemma. With the help of small data conditions and hybird Besov spaces, we finally derive the global…
In this paper we study the dynamics of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid in dimension two and three. More precisely we investigate the trajectory of the rigid body in the limit when the its mass and its size tend to zero. We show that the velocity of the center of mass of the rigid body coincides with the background fluid velocity in the limit. We are able to consider the case where the density of the small rigid body is uniformly bounded respect to its size.
We consider a fluid-structure interaction system composed by a rigid ball immersed into a viscous incompressible fluid. The motion of the structure satisfies the Newton laws and the fluid equations are the standard Navier-Stokes system. At the boundary of the fluid domain, we use the Tresca boundary conditions, that permit the fluid to slip tangentially on the boundary under some conditions on the stress tensor. More precisely, there is a threshold determining if the fluid can slip or not and there is a friction force acting on the part where the fluid can slip. Our main result is the existenc…
We consider density dependent, non-Newtonian, incompressible system with the space being flat torus. The viscious stress in the momentum equation is understood through the rheological law and its connection to the proper convex potential. We define the dissipative measure-valued solutions for the aforementioned equations as well as provide a proof of its existence. The main result of this work is the mv-strong uniqueness of the defined solutions.
We explore the behaviour of global-in-time weak solutions to a class of bead-spring chain models, with finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) spring potentials, for dilute polymeric fluids. In the models under consideration the solvent is assumed to be a compressible, isentropic, viscous, isothermal Newtonian fluid, confined to a bounded open domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and the velocity field is assumed to satisfy a complete slip boundary condition. We show that as the Mach number tends to zero the system is driven to its incompressible counterpart.
In this article, we consider Leray solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of one obstacle in 3D and we study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when the obstacle shrinks to a curve or to a surface. In particular, we will prove that a solid curve has no effect on the motion of a viscous fluid, so it is a removable singularity for these equations.
