In this paper, we are interested in the dynamics of charged particles interacting with the incompressible viscous flow. More precisely, we consider the Vlasov-Poisson or Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equation coupled with the incompressible Navier-Stokes system through the drag force. For the proposed kinetic-fluid model, we study the asymptotic regime corresponding to strong local alignment and diffusion forces. Under suitable assumptions on the initial data, we rigorously derive a coupled isothermal/pressureless Euler-Poisson system and incompressible Navier-Stokes system(in short, EPNS system). For this hydrodynamic limit, we employ the modulated kinetic energy estimate together with the relative entropy method and the bounded Lipschitz distance. We also construct a global-in-time strong solvability for the isothermal/pressureless EPNS system. In particular, this global-in-time solvability gives the estimates of hydrodynamic limit hold for all time.
We study the partial regularity problem of the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. In this paper, we show that a reverse Hölder inequality of velocity gradient with increasing support holds under the condition that a scaled functional corresponding the local kinetic energy is uniformly bounded. As an application, we give a new bound for the Hausdorff dimension and the Minkowski dimension of singular set when weak solutions $v$ belong to $L^\infty(0,T;L^{3,w}(\mathbb{R}^3))$ where $L^{3,w}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ denotes the standard weak Lebesgue space.
In this paper, we study global existence and large time behaviors of strong solutions to the kinetic Cucker--Smale model coupled with the three dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in the whole space. Using the maximal regularity estimate on the Stokes equations, global-in-time strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the coupled system are obtained under small initial data regime. The optimal decay rate of the system, in the sense that the energy of the system decays at a rate coinciding with the one corresponding to the underling incompressible Navier--Stokes equations withou…
We explore the existence of global weak solutions to the Hookean dumbbell model, a system of nonlinear partial differential equations that arises from the kinetic theory of dilute polymers, involving the unsteady incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in a bounded domain in two or three space dimensions, coupled to a Fokker--Planck-type parabolic equation. We prove the existence of large-data global weak solutions in the case of two space dimensions. Indirectly, our proof also rigorously demonstrates that, in two space dimensions at least, the Oldroyd-B model is the macroscopic closure of the…
Incompressible Navier-Stokes limit of non-bilinear kinetic equations and application to the BGK, nonlinear Fokker-Planck and Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equations
We prove that there exist infinitely many distributional solutions with infinite kinetic energy to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $ \mathbb{R}^2 $. We prove as well the existence of infinitely many distributional solutions for Burgers equation in $ \mathbb{R} $.

We deal with a three dimensional model based on the use of barycentric velocity that describes unsteady flows of a heat conducting electrically charged multicomponent chemically reacting non-Newtonian fluid. We show that under certain assumptions on data and the constitutive relations for such a fluid there exists a global in time and large data weak solution. The paper has two key novelties. The first one is that we present a model that is thermodynamically and mechanically consistent and that is able to describe the cross effects in a generality never considered before, i.e., we cover the so…
In [Commun Math Phys 348(1), 129-143, 2016], Cheskidov et al. proved that physically realizable weak solutions of the incompressible 2D Euler equations on a torus conserve kinetic energy. Physically realizable weak solutions are those that can be obtained as limits of vanishing viscosity. The key hypothesis was boundedness of the initial vorticity in $L^p$, $p>1$. In this work we extend their result, by adding forcing to the flow.
We introduce a notion of generalized stochastic flows on mani- folds, that extends to the viscous case the one defined by Brenier for perfect fluids. Their kinetic energy extends the classical kinetic energy to Brownian flows, defined as the L2 norm of their drift. We prove that there exists a generalized flow which realizes the infimum of the kinetic energy among all generalized flows with prescribed initial and final configuration. We also con- struct generalized flows with prescribed drift and kinetic energy smaller than the L2 norm of the drift. The results are actually presented for gener…
For $β<\frac13$, we consider $C^β(\mathbb{T}^3\times [0,T])$ weak solutions of the incompressible Euler equations that do not conserve the kinetic energy. We prove that for such solutions the closed and non-empty set of singular times $\mathcal{B}$ satisfies $\dim_{\mathcal{H}}(\mathcal{B})\geq \frac{2β}{1-β}$. This lower bound on the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set in time is intrinsically linked to the Hölder regularity of the kinetic energy and we conjecture it to be sharp. As a first step in this direction, for every $β<β'<\frac{1}{3}$ we are able to construct, via a convex integra…
We consider a class of kinetic models for polymeric fluids motivated by the Peterlin dumbbell theories for dilute polymer solutions with a nonlinear spring law for an infinitely extensible spring. The polymer molecules are suspended in an incompressible viscous Newtonian fluid confined to a bounded domain in two or three space dimensions. The unsteady motion of the solvent is described by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the elastic extra stress tensor appearing as a forcing term in the momentum equation. The elastic stress tensor is defined by the Kramers expression through the…
On a class of generalised solutions to the kinetic Hookean dumbbell model for incompressible dilute polymeric fluids: existence and macroscopic closure
This paper studies global existence, hydrodynamic limit, and large-time behavior of weak solutions to a kinetic flocking model coupled to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The model describes the motion of particles immersed in a Navier-Stokes fluid interacting through local alignment. We first prove the existence of weak solutions using energy and $L^p$ estimates together with the velocity averaging lemma. We also rigorously establish a hydrodynamic limit corresponding to strong noise and local alignment. In this limit, the dynamics can be totally described by a coupled compressible…
We construct weak solutions to the 3D hypoviscous incompressible elastodynamics with finite kinetic energy which was unknown in literatures. Our result holds for fractional hypoviscosity $(-Δ)^θ$, where $0\leqθ<1$. The proof {consists of a convex integration scheme with new building blocks of 2D intermittency and suitable temporal correctors, which are motivated by} the inherent geometric structure of the viscoelastic equations.
For the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann equations with random uncertainties from the initial data or collision kernels, we proved the sensitivity analysis and energy estimates uniformly with respect to the Knudsen number in the diffusive scaling using hypocoercivity method. As a consequence, we also justified the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson limit with random inputs. In particular, for the first time, we obtain the precise convergence rate {\em without} employing any results based on Hilbert expansion. We not only generalized the previous deterministic Navier-Stokes-Poisson limits to random i…
We introduce six families of three-dimensional space-periodic steady solenoidal flows, whose kinetic helicity density is zero at any point. Four families are analytically defined. Flows in four families have zero helicity spectrum. Sample flows from five families are used to demonstrate numerically that neither zero kinetic helicity density, nor zero helicity spectrum prohibit generation of large-scale magnetic field by the two most prominent dynamo mechanisms: the magnetic $α$-effect and negative eddy diffusivity. Our computations also attest that such flows often generate small-scale field f…
Recent results on the fluid dynamic limits of the Boltzmann equation based on the DiPerna-Lions theory of renormalized solutions are reviewed in this paper, with an emphasis on regimes where the velocity field behaves to leading order like that of an incompressible fluid with constant density.
As V. I. Arnold observed in the 1960s, the Euler equations of incompressible fluid flow correspond formally to geodesic equations in a group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. Working in an Eulerian framework, we study incompressible flows of shapes as critical paths for action (kinetic energy) along transport paths constrained to have characteristic-function densities. The formal geodesic equations for this problem are Euler equations for incompressible, inviscid potential flow of fluid with zero pressure and surface tension on the free boundary. The problem of minimizing this action exhib…
In this paper, we consider turbulence from a geometric perspective based on the vorticity equations for incompressible viscous fluid flows. We derive several quantitative statements about the statistics of turbulent flows. In particular we establish an entropy decay inequality which involves the turbulent kinetic energy and $L^{1}$-enstrophy, and we identify the small time scale of the vorticity broken down and the vorticity creation under the universality assumption of small time scales of turbulence flows.
We study the compressible and incompressible two-phase flows separated by a sharp interface with a phase transition and a surface tension. In particular, we consider the problem in $\mathbb{R}^N$, and the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations is used in the upper domain and the Navier-Stokes equations is used in the lower domain. We prove the existence of $\mathcal{R}$-bounded solution operator families for a resolvent problem arising from its model problem. According to Shibata \cite{GS2014}, the regularity of $ρ_+$ is $W^1_q$ in space, but to solve the kinetic equation: $\mathbf{u}_Γ\cdot\mathbf{…
In this paper, we consider the 2-dimensional non-viscous Oldroyd-B model. In the case of the ratio equal 1~($α=0$), it is a difficult case since the velocity field $u(t,x)$ is no longer decay. Fortunately, by {observing the exponential decay} of the stress tensor $τ(t,x)$, we succeeded in proving the global existence for this system with some large initial data. Moreover, we give an unsteady result: when the ratio is close to 1~($a\rightarrow 0$), the system is not steady for large time. This implies an interesting physical phenomenon that the term $a\mathbb{D}u$ is a bridge between the transf…
A new diffuse interface model for a two-phase flow of two incompressible fluids with different densities is introduced using methods from rational continuum mechanics. The model fulfills local and global dissipation inequalities and is also generalized to situations with a soluble species. Using the method of matched asymptotic expansions we derive various sharp interface models in the limit when the interfacial thickness tends to zero. Depending on the scaling of the mobility in the diffusion equation we either derive classical sharp interface models or models where bulk or surface diffusion …
We investigate the Boltzmann equation, depending on the Knudsen number, in the Navier-Stokes perturbative setting on the torus. Using hypocoercivity, we derive a new proof of existence and exponential decay for solutions close to a global equilibrium, with explicit regularity bounds and rates of convergence. These results are uniform in the Knudsen number and thus allow us to obtain a strong derivation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations as the Knudsen number tends to $0$. Moreover, our method is also used to deal with other kinetic models. Finally, we show that the study of the hydr…
This paper is concerned with six variational problems and their mutual connections: The quadratic Monge-Kantorovich optimal transport, the Schrödinger problem, Brenier's relaxed model for incompressible fluids, the so-called Brödinger problem recently introduced by M. Arnaudon & al. [3], the multiphase Brenier model, and the multiphase Brödinger problem. All of them involve the minimization of a kinetic action and/or a relative entropy of some path measures with respect to the reversible Brownian motion. As the viscosity parameter $ν\to 0$ we establish Gamma-convergence relations between the c…
For a prescribed deterministic kinetic energy we use convex integration to construct analytically weak and probabilistically strong solutions to the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations driven by a linear multiplicative stochastic forcing. These solutions are defined up to an arbitrarily large stopping time and have deterministic initial values, which are part of the construction. Moreover, by a suitable choice of different kinetic energies which coincide on an interval close to time 0, we obtain non-uniqueness.
