The motion of a rigid body immersed in an incompressible perfect fluid which occupies a three- dimensional bounded domain have been recently studied under its PDE formulation. In particular classical solutions have been shown to exist locally in time. In this note, following the celebrated result of Arnold concerning the case of a perfect incompressible fluid alone, we prove that these classical solutions are the geodesics of a Riemannian manifold of infinite dimension, in the sense that they are the critical points of an action, which is the integral over time of the total kinetic energy of the fluid-rigid body system.
As V. I. Arnold observed in the 1960s, the Euler equations of incompressible fluid flow correspond formally to geodesic equations in a group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. Working in an Eulerian framework, we study incompressible flows of shapes as critical paths for action (kinetic energy) along transport paths constrained to have characteristic-function densities. The formal geodesic equations for this problem are Euler equations for incompressible, inviscid potential flow of fluid with zero pressure and surface tension on the free boundary. The problem of minimizing this action exhib…
We consider $L^2$ minimizing geodesics along the group of volume preserving maps $SDiff(D)$ of a given 3-dimensional domain $D$. The corresponding curves describe the motion of an ideal incompressible fluid inside $D$ and are (formally) solutions of the Euler equations. It is known that there is a unique possible pressure gradient for these curves whenever their end points are fixed. In addition, this pressure field has a limited but unconditional (internal) regularity. The present paper completes these results by showing: 1) the uniqueness property can be viewed as an infinite dimensional phe…
In this paper we show that the incompressible Euler equation on the Sobolev space $H^s(\R^n)$, $s > n/2+1$, can be expressed in Lagrangian coordinates as a geodesic equation on an infinite dimensional manifold. Moreover the Christoffel map describing the geodesic equation is real analytic. The dynamics in Lagrangian coordinates is described on the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms, which is an analytic submanifold of the whole diffeomorphism group. Furthermore it is shown that a Sobolev class vector field integrates to a curve on the diffeomorphism group.
We study Brenier's variational models for incompressible Euler equations. These models give rise to a relaxation of the Arnold distance in the space of measure-preserving maps and, more generally, measure-preserving plans. We analyze the properties of the relaxed distance, we show a close link between the Lagrangian and the Eulerian model, and we derive necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for minimizers. These conditions take into account a modified Lagrangian induced by the pressure field. Moreover, adapting some ideas of Shnirelman, we show that, even for non-deterministic final c…
The affine motion of two-dimensional (2d) incompressible fluids surrounded by vacuum can be reduced to a completely integrable and globally solvable Hamiltonian system of ordinary differential equations for the deformation gradient in ${\rm SL}(2,{\mathbb R})$. In the case of perfect fluids, the motion is given by geodesic flow in ${\rm SL}(2,{\mathbb R})$ with the Euclidean metric, while for magnetically conducting fluids (MHD), the motion is governed by a harmonic oscillator in ${\rm SL}(2,{\mathbb R})$. A complete classification of the dynamics is given including rigid motions, rotating edd…
We study a mutually coupled mesoscopic-macroscopic-shell system of equations modeling a dilute incompressible polymer fluid which is evolving and interacting with a flexible shell of Koiter type. The polymer constitutes a solvent-solute mixture where the solvent is modelled on the macroscopic scale by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation and the solute is modelled on the mesoscopic scale by a Fokker-Planck equation (Kolmogorov forward equation) for the probability density function of the bead-spring polymer chain configuration. This mixture interacts with a nonlinear elastic shell which s…
There are not too many known explicit solutions to the 2-dimensional incompressible Euler equations in Lagrangian coordinates. Special mention must be made of the well-known ones due Gerstner and Kirchhoff, which were already discovered in the 19th century. These two classical solutions share a common characteristic, namely, the dependence of the coordinates from the initial location is determined by a harmonic map, as recognized by Abrashkin and Yakubovich, who more recently -- in the 1980s -- obtained new explicit solutions with a similar feature. We present a more general method for constru…
We consider the motion of several rigid bodies immersed in a two-dimensional incompress-ible perfect fluid, the whole system being bounded by an external impermeable fixed boundary. The fluid motion is described by the incompressible Euler equations and the motion of the rigid bodies is given by Newton's laws with forces due to the fluid pressure. We prove that, for smooth solutions, Newton's equations can be recast as a second-order ODE for the degrees of freedom of the rigid bodies with coefficients depending on the fluid vorticity and on the circulations around the bodies, but not anymore o…
A new proof is given of the fact that the particle trajectories of the ideal incompressible fluid are analytic curves, though the solutions of the Euler equations may have a finite regularity. This is a consequence of a general fact that the geodesic exponential map on the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms belonging to the Sobolev space is real-analytic. The proof is based on the general properties of holomorphic maps in complex Banach spaces.
In this paper we study a coupled system modeling the movement of a deformable solid immersed in a fluid. For the solid we consider a given deformation that has to obey several physical constraints. The motion of the fluid is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a time-dependent bounded domain of $\R^3$, and the solid satisfies the Newton's laws. Our contribution consists in adapting and completing some results of ARMA 2008 in dimension 3, in a framework where the regularity of the deformation of the solid is limited. We rewrite the main system in domains which do not depend…
We study the geodesic problem on the group of diffeomorphism of a domain M$\subset$Rd, equipped with the H(div) metric. The geodesic equations coincide with the Camassa-Holm equation when d=1, and represent one of its possible multi-dimensional generalizations when d>1. We propose a relaxation {à} la Brenier of this problem, in which solutions are represented as probability measures on the space of continuous paths on the cone over M. We use this relaxation to prove that smooth H(div) geodesics are globally length minimizing for short times. We also prove that there exists a unique pressure fi…
Recently solutions to the aggregation equation on compact Riemannian Manifolds have been studied with different techniques. This work demonstrates the small time existence of measure-valued solutions for suitably regular intrinsic potentials. The main tool is the use of the minimizing movement scheme which together with the optimality conditions yield a finite speed of propagation. The main technical difficulty is non-differentiability of the potential in the cut locus which is resolved via the propagation properties of geodesic interpolations of the minimizing movement scheme and passes to th…
Following Arnold's geometric interpretation, the Euler equations of an incompressible fluid moving in a domain D are known to be the optimality equation of the minimizing geodesic problem along the group of orientation and volume preserving diffeomorphisms of D. This problem admits a well-established convex relaxation which generates a set of "relaxed", "multi-stream", version of the Euler equations. However, it is unclear that such relaxed equations are appropriate for the initial value problem and the theory of turbulence, due to their lack of well-posedness for most initial data. As an atte…
The 3D compressible and incompressible Euler equations with a physical vacuum free boundary condition and affine initial conditions reduce to a globally solvable Hamiltonian system of ordinary differential equations for the deformation gradient in $\rm{GL}^+(3,\mathbb R)$. The evolution of the fluid domain is described by a family ellipsoids whose diameter grows at a rate proportional to time. Upon rescaling to a fixed diameter, the asymptotic limit of the fluid ellipsoid is determined by a positive semi-definite quadratic form of rank $r=1$, 2, or 3, corresponding to the asymptotic degenerati…
In 1966 V.Arnold suggested a group-theoretic approach to ideal hydrodynamics in which the motion of an inviscid incompressible fluid is described as the geodesic flow of the right-invariant $L^2$-metric on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the flow domain. Here we propose geodesic, group-theoretic, and Hamiltonian frameworks to include fluid flows with vortex sheets. It turns out that the corresponding dynamics is related to a certain groupoid of pairs of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms with common interface. We also develop a general framework for Euler-Arnold equations for …

We study the high-frequency limit of non-autonomous gradient flows in metric spaces of energy functionals comprising an explicitly time-dependent perturbation term which might oscillate in a rapid way, but fulfills a certain Lipschitz condition. On grounds of the existence results by Ferreira and Guevara (2015) on non-autonomous gradient flows (which we also extend to the framework of geodesically non-convex energies), we prove that the associated solution curves converge to a solution of the time-averaged evolution equation in the limit of infinite frequency. Under the additional assumption o…
We discuss several geometric PDEs and their relationship with Hydrodynamics and classical Electrodynamics. We start from the Euler equations of ideal incompressible fluids that, geometrically speaking, describe geodesics on groups of measure preserving maps with respect to the $L^2$ metric. Then, we introduce a geometric approximation of the Euler equation, which involves the Monge-Ampère equation and the Monge-Kantorovich optimal transportation theory. This equation can be interpreted as a fully nonlinear correction of the Vlasov-Poisson system that describes the motion of electrons in a unif…
We study in this paper the movement of a rigid solid inside an incompressible Navier-Stokes flow, within a bounded domain. We consider the case where slip is allowed at the fluid/solid interface, through a Navier condition. Taking into account slip at the interface is very natural within this model, as classical no-slip conditions lead to unrealistic collisional behavior between the solid and the domain boundary. We prove for this model existence of weak solutions of Leray type, up to collision, in three dimensions. The key point is that, due to the slip condition, the velocity field is discon…
Cauchy invariants are now viewed as a powerful tool for investigating the Lagrangian structure of three-dimensional (3D) ideal flow (Frisch & Zheligovsky, Commun. Math. Phys., vol. 326, 2014, pp. 499-505, Podvigina et al., J. Comput. Phys., vol. 306, 2016, pp. 320-342). Looking at such invariants with the modern tools of differential geometry and of geodesic flow on the space SDiff of volume-preserving transformations (Arnold, Ann. Inst. Fourier, vol. 16, 1966, pp. 319-361), all manners of generalisations are here derived. The Cauchy invariants equation and the Cauchy formula, relating the vor…
We study a fluid-structure interaction problem describing movement of a rigid body inside a bounded domain filled by a viscous fluid. The fluid is modelled by the generalized incompressible Naiver-Stokes equations which include cases of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. The fluid and the rigid body are coupled via the Navier slip boundary conditions and balance of forces at the fluid-rigid body interface. Our analysis also includes the case of the nonlinear slip condition. The main results assert the existence of strong solutions, in an $L^p-L^q$ setting, globally in time, for small data in …
