In this paper we introduce the fourth fundamental form for the hypersurfaces in $H^{n+1}$ and the space-like hypersurfaces in $S_{1}^{n+1}$ and discuss the conformality of the normal Gauss maps of the hypersurfaces in $H^{n+1}$ and $S_{1}^{n+1}$. Particularly, we discuss the surfaces with conformal normal Gauss maps in $H^{3}$ and $S_{1}^{3}$ and prove a duality property. We give the Weierstrass representation formula for the space-like surfaces in $S_{1}^{3}$ with conformal normal Gauss maps. We also state the similar results for the time-like surfaces in $S_{1}^{3}.$
Hypersurfaces embedded in conformal manifolds appear frequently as boundary data in boundary-value problems in cosmology and string theory. Viewed as the non-null conformal infinity of a spacetime, we consider hypersurfaces embedded in a Riemannian (or Lorentzian) conformal manifold. We construct a finite and minimal family of hypersurface tensors -- the curvatures intrinsic to the hypersurface and the so-called ``conformal fundamental forms'' -- that can be used to construct natural conformal invariants of the hypersurface embedding up to a fixed order in hypersurface-orthogonal derivatives o…
Let $x: \mathbf{M} \rightarrow {\mathbb Q}^{n+1}_1$ be a regular space-like hypersurface in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^{n+1}_1$. We classify all those hypersurfaces with parallel Blaschke tensor in the conformal space up to the conformal equivalence.
Biharmonic hypersurfaces in a generic conformally flat space are studied in this paper. The equation of such hypersurfaces is derived and is used to determine the conformally flat metric $f^{-2}δ_{ij}$ on the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$ so that a minimal hypersurface $M^m\longrightarrow (\mathbb{R}^{m+1}, δ_{ij})$ in a Euclidean space becomes a biharmonic hypersurface $M^m\longrightarrow (\mathbb{R}^{m+1}, f^{-2}δ_{ij})$ in the conformally flat space. Our examples include all biharmonic hypersurfaces found in [Ou1] and [OT] as special cases.
In this paper, we study generic conformally flat hypersurfaces in the Euclidean $4$-space $\mathbb{R}^4$ using the framework of Möbius geometry. First, we classify locally the generic conformally flat hypersurfaces with closed Möbius form under the Möbius transformation group of $\mathbb{R}^4$. Such examples come from cones, cylinders, or rotational hypersurfaces over the surfaces with constant Gaussian curvature in $3$-spheres, Euclidean $3$-spaces, or hyperbolic $3$-spaces, respectively. Second, we investigate the global behavior of the generic conformally flat hypersurface and give some int…
In the realm of conformal geometry, we give a classification of the Euclidean hypersurfaces that admit a non-trivial conformal infinitesimal variation. In the restricted case of conformal variations, such a classification was obtained by E. Cartan in 1917. The case of infinitesimal isometric variations was done by U. Sbrana in 1908. In particular, we show that the class of hypersurfaces that allow a conformal infinitesimal variation is much larger than the one considered by Cartan.
In [2] we have classified the Blaschke quasi-umbilical submanifolds in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$. In this paper we shall classify the Blaschke para-umbilical hypersurfaces in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$. That may be also considered as the extension of the classification of the conformal isotropic submanifolds in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$.
We prove a universal lower bound for the $L^{n/2}$-norm of the Weyl tensor in terms of the Betti numbers for compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds that are conformally immersed as hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space. As a consequence, we determine the homology of almost conformally flat hypersurfaces. Furthermore, we provide a necessary condition for a compact Riemannian manifold to admit an isometric minimal immersion as a hypersurface in the sphere and extend a result due to Shiohama and Xu \cite{SX} for compact hypersurfaces in any space form.
In this paper, we present some new properties for p-biharmonic hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifold. We also characterize the p-biharmonic submanifolds in an Einstein space. We construct a new example of proper p-biharmonic hypersurfaces. We present some open problems.
For a hypersurface V of a conformal space, we introduce a conformal differential invariant I = h^2/g, where g and h are the first and the second fundamental forms of V connected by the apolarity condition. This invariant is called the conformal quadratic element of V. The solution of the problem of conformal rigidity is presented in the framework of conformal differential geometry and connected with the conformal quadratic element of V. The main theorem states: Let n \geq 4 and V and V' be two nonisotropic hypersurfaces without umbilical points in a conformal space C^n or a pseudoconformal spa…
We derive a relationship between the eigenvalues of the Weyl-Schouten tensor of a conformal representative of the conformal infinity of a hyperbolic Poincaré manifold and the principal curvatures on the level sets of its uniquely associated defining function with calculations based on [9] [10]. This relationship generalizes the result for hypersurfaces in ${\H}^{n+1}$ and their connection to the conformal geometry of ${\SS}^n$ as exhibited in [7] and gives a correspondence between Weingarten hypersurfaces in hyperbolic Poincaré manifolds and conformally invariant equations on the conformal inf…
In the year 1984 Shibata investigated the theory of a change which is called a $ β$-change of a Finsler metric. On the other hand in 1985 a systematic study of geometry of hypersurfaces in Finsler spaces was given by Matsumoto. In the present paper is to devoted to the study of a condition for a Randers conformal change to be projective and find out when a totally geodesic hypersurface $ F^{n-1} $ remains to be a totally geodesic hypersurface $ F^{n-1} $ under the projective Randers conformal change. Further obatined the condition under which a Finslerian hypersurfaces given by the projective …
We introduce a class of null hypersurfaces of a semi-Riemannian manifold, namely, screen quasi-conformal hypersurfaces, whose geometry may be studied through the geometry of its screen distribution. In particular, this notion allows us to extend some results of previous works to the case in which the sectional curvature of the ambient space is different from zero. As applications, we study umbilical, isoparametric and Einstein null hypersurfaces in Lorentzian space forms and provide several classification results.
Any compact spacelike hypersurface immersed in a doubly warped product spacetime $I{}_{h} \times_ρ \mathbb{P}$ with nondecreasing warping factor $ρ$ must be a spacelike slice, provided that the mean curvature satisfies $H\geqρ'/hρ$ everywhere on the hypersurface. The conclusion also holds, under suitable assumptions on the immersion, when the hypersurface is complete and noncompact. A similar rigidity property is shown for compact hypersurfaces in spacetimes carrying a conformal, strictly expanding, timelike vector field.
The aim of this paper is to verify that the study of generic conformally flat hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional space forms is reduced to a surface theory in the standard 3-sphere. The conformal structure of generic conformally flat (local-)hypersurfaces is characterized as conformally flat (local-)3-metrics with the Guichard condition. Then, there is a certain class of orthogonal analytic (local-)Riemannian 2-metrics with constant Gauss curvature -1 such that any 2-metric of the class gives rise to a one-parameter family of conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition. In this paper, w…
The authors study the geometry of lightlike hypersurfaces on manifolds $(M, c)$ endowed with a pseudoconformal structure $c = CO (n - 1, 1)$ of Lorentzian signature. Such hypersurfaces are of interest in general relativity since they can be models of different types of physical horizons. On a lightlike hypersurface, the authors consider the fibration of isotropic geodesics and investigate their singular points and singular submanifolds. They construct a conformally invariant normalization of a lightlike hypersurface intrinsically connected with its geometry and investigate affine connections i…
Degenerate submanifolds of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are quite difficult to study because there is no prefered connection when the submanifold is not totally geodesic. For the particular case of degenerate totally umbilical hypersurfaces, we show that there are "Weyl" connections adapted to the induced structure on the hypersurface. We begin the study of these with their holonomy.
In this paper we classify Euclidean hypersurfaces $f\colon M^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with a principal curvature of multiplicity $n-2$ that admit a genuine conformal deformation $\tilde{f}\colon M^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n+2}$. That $\tilde{f}\colon M^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ is a genuine conformal deformation of $f$ means that it is a conformal immersion for which there exists no open subset $U \subset M^n$ such that the restriction $\tilde{f}|_U$ is a composition $\tilde f|_U=h\circ f|_U$ of $f|_U$ with a conformal immersion $h\colon V\to \mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ of an open subset $…
There are three types of hypersurfaces in a pseudoconformal space C^n_1 of Lorentzian signature: spacelike, timelike, and lightlike. These three types of hypersurfaces are considered in parallel. Spacelike hypersurfaces are endowed with a proper conformal structure, and timelike hypersurfaces are endowed with a conformal structure of Lorentzian type. Geometry of these two types of hypersurfaces can be studied in a manner that is similar to that for hypersurfaces of a proper conformal space. Lightlike hypersurfaces are endowed with a degenerate conformal structure. This is the reason that their…
There is a one-to-one correspondence between associated families of generic conformally flat (local-)hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional space forms and conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition. In this paper, we study the space of conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition: for a conformally flat 3-metric with the Guichard condition in the interior of the space, an evolution of orthogonal (local-) Riemannian $2$-metrics with constant Gauss curvature $-1$ is determined; for a $2$-metric belonging to a certain class of orthogonal analytic $2$-metrics with constant Gauss cur…
We address the problem of determining the hypersurfaces $f\colon M^{n} \to \mathbb{Q}_s^{n+1}(c)$ with dimension $n\geq 3$ of a pseudo-Riemannian space form of dimension $n+1$, constant curvature $c$ and index $s\in \{0, 1\}$ for which there exists another isometric immersion $\tilde{f}\colon M^{n} \to \mathbb{Q}^{n+1}_{\tilde s}(\tilde{c})$ with $\tilde{c}\neq c$. For $n\geq 4$, we provide a complete solution by extending results for $s=0=\tilde s$ by do Carmo and Dajczer and by Dajczer and the second author. Our main results are for the most interesting case $n=3$, and these are new even in …
In this paper, we use two conformal non-homogeneous coordinate systems, modeled on the de Sitter space ${\mathbb S}^{m+1}_1$, to cover the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^{m+1}_1$, so that the conformal geometry of regular space-like hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{Q}^{m+1}_1$ is treated as that of hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb S}^{m+1}_1$. As a result, we give a complete classification of the regular space-like hypersurfaces (represented in the de Sitter space ${\mathbb S}^{m+1}_1$) with parallel Blaschke tensors.
We introduce two classes of null hypersurfaces of an indefinite Sasakian manifold, $(\overline{M}, \overlineϕ,ζ, η)$, tangent to the characteristic vector field $ζ$, called; {\it contact screen conformal} and {\it contact screen umbilic} null hypersurfaces. These hypersurfaces come in to fill the existing gap in screen conformal and screen totally umbilic null hypersurfaces. We prove that such hypersurfaces are contained in indefinite Sasakian space forms of constant $\overlineϕ$-sectional curvature of $-3$.
Similar to the definition of Dupin hypersurface in Riemannian space forms, we define the spacelike Dupin hypersurface in Lorentzian space forms. As conformal invariant objects, spacelike Dupin hypersurfaces are studied in this paper using the framework of conformal geometry. Further we classify the spacelike Dupin hypersurfaces with constant Möbius curvatures, which are the partition ratio of the principal curvatures of the spacelike Dupin hypersurface.
I give a theory of Moebius-flat hypersurfaces in n-dimensional projective space, analogous to that in conformal geometry. This unifies the classes of hypersurfaces with flat induced conformal structure (n > 3) and a classically studied class of surfaces (n = 3). I extend an example of Akivis-Konnov, and use polynomial conserved quantities to characterise hypersurfaces with flat centro-affine metric among Moebius-flat hypersurfaces. The theory has an obvious counterpart in Lie sphere geometry.
Let $M^n$ be an $n$-dimensional umbilic-free hypersurface in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Lorentzian space form $M^{n+1}_1(c)$. Three basic invariants of $M^n$ under the conformal transformation group of $M^{n+1}_1(c)$ are a $1$-form $C$, called conformal $1$-form, a symmetric $(0,2)$ tensor $B$, called conformal second fundamental form, and a symmetric $(0,2)$ tensor $A$, called Blaschke tensor. The so-called para-Blaschke tensor $D^λ=A+λB$, the linear combination of $A$ and $B$, is still a symmetric $(0,2)$ tensor. A spacelike hypersurface is called a para-Blaschke isoparametric spacelike hypersu…
In this paper, our purpose is to study rigidity theorems for $λ$-hypersurfaces in Euclidean space under Gauss map. As a Bernstein type problem for $λ$-hypersurfaces, we prove that an entirely graphic $λ$-hypersurface in Euclidean space is a hyperplane.
We study rotational hypersurfaces with constant Gauss-Kronecker curvature. We solve the ODE for the generating curves of such hypersurfaces and analyze several geometric properties of such hypersurfaces. In particular, we discover a class of non-compact rotational hypersurfaces with constant and negative Gauss-Kronecker curvature and finite volume, which can be seen as the higher-dimensional generalization of the pseudo-sphere. Finally we investigate other types of rotational hypersurfaces with similar curvature constraints, including those with prescribed Gauss-Kronecker curvature.
In this paper, we completely classify conformal solitons on pseudo-Riemannian hypersurfaces in pseudo-Euclidean spaces arisen from the position vector field. In particular, the classification of Yamabe solitons on pseudo-Riemannian hypersurfaces in pseudo-Euclidean spaces arisen from the position vector field can be obtained.
In this paper we use the relationship between conformal metrics on the sphere and horospherically convex hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space for giving sufficient conditions on a conformal metric to be radial under some constrain on the eigenvalues of its Schouten tensor. Also, we study conformal metrics on the sphere which are invariant by a $k-$parameter subgroup of conformal diffeomorphisms of the sphere, giving a bound on its maximum dimension. Moreover, we classify conformal metrics on the sphere whose eigenvalues of the Shouten tensor are all constant (we call them \emph{isoparametric …
In this paper we develop a global correspondence between immersed horospherically convex hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space and complete conformal metrics on domains in the sphere. We establish results on when the hyperbolic Gauss map is injective and when an immersed horospherically convex hypersurface can be unfolded along the normal flow into an embedded one. These results allow us to establish general Alexandrov reflection principles of elliptic problems of both Weingarten hypersurfaces and complete conformal metrics and relations between them. Consequently, we are able to obtain, for insta…
The invariant theory for conformal hypersurfaces is studied by treating these as the conformal infinity of a conformally compact manifold: For a given conformal hypersurface embedding, a distinguished ambient metric is found (within its conformal class) by solving a singular version of the Yamabe problem. Using existence results for asymptotic solutions to this problem, we develop the details of how to proliferate conformal hypersurface invariants. In addition we show how to compute the the solution's asymptotics. We also develop a calculus of conformal hypersurface invariant differential oper…
In this paper we study several aspects of the geometry of conformally stationary Lorentz manifolds, and particularly of GRW spaces, due to the presence of a closed conformal vector field. More precisely, we begin by extending to these spaces a result of J. Simons on the minimality of cones in Euclidean space, and apply it to the construction of complete, noncompact maximal submanifolds of both de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spaces. Then we state and prove very general Bernstein-type theorems for spacelike hypersurfaces in conformally stationary Lorentz manifolds, one of which not assuming the hy…
Riemannian manifolds of quasi-constant sectional curvatures (QC-manifolds) are divided into two basic classes: with positive or negative horizontal sectional curvatures. We prove that the Riemannian QC-manifolds with positive horizontal sectional curvatures are locally equivalent to canal hypersurfaces in Euclidean space, while the Riemannian QC-manifolds with negative horizontal sectional curvatures are locally equivalent to canal space-like hypersurfaces in Minkowski space. We prove that the local theory of conformally flat Riemannian manifolds, which can be locally isometrically embedded as…
In this paper we present a local description for complete minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^5$ with zero Gauss-Kronecker curvature, zero $3$-mean curvature and nowhere zero second fundamental form.
We define a Gauss map $γ:M\rightarrow\mathbb{S}^{6}$ of an oriented hypersurface $M$ of the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{7}$ and prove that $γ$ is harmonic if and only if $M$ has CMC. Results on the geometry and topology of CMC hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{S}^{7}$, under hypothesis on the image of $γ$, are then obtained. By a Hopf symmetrization process we define a Gauss map for hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{CP}^{3}$ and obtain similar results for CMC hypersurfaces of this space.
In this work, we study various properties of embedded hypersurfaces in $1+1+2$ decomposed spacetimes with a preferred spatial direction, denoted $e^μ$, which are orthogonal to the fluid flow velocity of the spacetime and admit a proper conformal transformation. To ensure a non-vanishing positivity scalar curvature of the induced metric, we impose that the scalar curvature of the conformal metric is non-negative and that the associated conformal factor satisfies $\hatφ^2+2\hat{\hatφ}>0$, where $\hat{\ast}$ denotes derivative along $e^μ$. Firstly, it is demonstrated that such hypersurface is eit…
We investigate complete minimal hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $% \ {R}^{4}$, with Gauss-Kronecker curvature identically zero. We prove that, if $f:M^{3}\to {R}^{4}$ is a complete minimal hypersurface with Gauss-Kronecker curvature identically zero, nowhere vanishing second fundamental form and scalar curvature bounded from below, then $f(M^{3})$ splits as a Euclidean product $L^{2}\times {R}$, where $L^{2}$ is a complete minimal surface in $ {R}^{3}$ with Gaussian curvature bounded from below.
In this paper we consider smooth oriented hypersurfaces in 2-step nilpotent Lie groups with a left invariant metric and derive an expression for the Laplacian of the Gauss map for such hypersurfaces in the general case and in some particular cases. In the case of CMC-hypersurface in the (2m+1)-dimensional Heisenberg group we also derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the Gauss map to be harmonic and prove that for m=1 all CMC-surfaces with the harmonic Gauss map are "cylinders".
Given a unit vector field on a closed Euclidean hypersurface, we define a map from the hypersurface to a sphere in the Euclidean space. This application allows us to exhibit a list of topological invariants which combines the second fundamental form of the hypersurface and the vector field itself. We show how these invariants can be used as obstructions to certain codimension one foliations.
Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional smooth oriented complete embedded minimal hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with Euclidean volume growth. We show that if the image under the Gauss map of $M$ avoids some neighborhood of a half-equator, then $M$ must be an affine hyperplane.
In this paper, we study the relationship between isoparametric hypersurfaces and hypersurfaces with constant principal curvatures in Finsler spaces. We give some examples of isoparametric hypersurfaces with (non)constant principal curvatures on Randers manifolds with nonconstant flag curvatures. Furthermore, we construct an example of a conformally flat Randers manifold which admits a family of nonisoparametric hyperplanes with constant principal curvatures.
Our first objective in this paper is to give a natural formulation of the Christoffel problem for hypersurfaces in $H^{n+1}$, by means of the hyperbolic Gauss map and the notion of hyperbolic curvature radii for hypersurfaces. Our second objective is to provide an explicit equivalence of this Christoffel problem with the famous problem of prescribing scalar curvature on $§^n$ for conformal metrics, posed by Nirenberg and Kazdan-Warner. This construction lets us translate into the hyperbolic setting the known results for the scalar curvature problem, and also provides a hypersurface theory inte…
