The aim of this paper is to verify that the study of generic conformally flat hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional space forms is reduced to a surface theory in the standard 3-sphere. The conformal structure of generic conformally flat (local-)hypersurfaces is characterized as conformally flat (local-)3-metrics with the Guichard condition. Then, there is a certain class of orthogonal analytic (local-)Riemannian 2-metrics with constant Gauss curvature -1 such that any 2-metric of the class gives rise to a one-parameter family of conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition. In this paper, we firstly relate 2-metrics of the class to surfaces in the 3-sphere: for a 2-metric of the class, a 5-dimensional set of (non-isometric) analytic surfaces in the 3-sphere is determined such that any surface of the set gives rise to an evolution of surfaces in the 3-sphere issuing from the surface and the evolution is the Gauss map of a generic conformally flat hypersurface in the Euclidean 4-space. Secondly, we characterize analytic surfaces in the 3-sphere which give rise to generic conformally flat hypersurfaces.
Biharmonic hypersurfaces in a generic conformally flat space are studied in this paper. The equation of such hypersurfaces is derived and is used to determine the conformally flat metric $f^{-2}δ_{ij}$ on the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$ so that a minimal hypersurface $M^m\longrightarrow (\mathbb{R}^{m+1}, δ_{ij})$ in a Euclidean space becomes a biharmonic hypersurface $M^m\longrightarrow (\mathbb{R}^{m+1}, f^{-2}δ_{ij})$ in the conformally flat space. Our examples include all biharmonic hypersurfaces found in [Ou1] and [OT] as special cases.
In this paper, we study generic conformally flat hypersurfaces in the Euclidean $4$-space $\mathbb{R}^4$ using the framework of Möbius geometry. First, we classify locally the generic conformally flat hypersurfaces with closed Möbius form under the Möbius transformation group of $\mathbb{R}^4$. Such examples come from cones, cylinders, or rotational hypersurfaces over the surfaces with constant Gaussian curvature in $3$-spheres, Euclidean $3$-spaces, or hyperbolic $3$-spaces, respectively. Second, we investigate the global behavior of the generic conformally flat hypersurface and give some int…
We prove a universal lower bound for the $L^{n/2}$-norm of the Weyl tensor in terms of the Betti numbers for compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds that are conformally immersed as hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space. As a consequence, we determine the homology of almost conformally flat hypersurfaces. Furthermore, we provide a necessary condition for a compact Riemannian manifold to admit an isometric minimal immersion as a hypersurface in the sphere and extend a result due to Shiohama and Xu \cite{SX} for compact hypersurfaces in any space form.
In this paper, we study conformally flat hypersurfaces of dimension $n(\geq 4)$ in $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ using the framework of Möbius geometry. First, we classify and explicitly express the conformally flat hypersurfaces of dimension $n(\geq 4)$ with constant Möbius scalar curvature under the Möbius transformation group of $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$. Second, we prove that if the conformally flat hypersurface with constant Möbius scalar curvature $R$ is compact, then $$R=(n-1)(n-2)r^2, ~~0<r<1,$$ and the compact conformally flat hypersurface is Möbius equivalent to the torus $$\mathbb{ S}^1(\sqrt{1-r^2})…
In this paper, we present some new properties for p-biharmonic hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifold. We also characterize the p-biharmonic submanifolds in an Einstein space. We construct a new example of proper p-biharmonic hypersurfaces. We present some open problems.
We prove the existence of smooth closed hypersurfaces of prescribed mean curvature homeomorphic to $S^n$ for small $n, n\le6$, provided there are barriers.
In this paper we study the r-stability of closed spacelike hypersurfaces with constant $r$-th mean curvature in conformally stationary spacetimes of constant sectional curvature. In this setting, we obtain a characterization of $r-$stability through the analysis of the first eigenvalue of an operator naturally attached to the $r$-th mean curvature. As an application, we treat the case in which the spacetime is the de Sitter space.
In this paper we prove that a flat free-boundary minimal $n$-disk, $n\geq3$, in the unit Euclidean ball $B^{n+1}$ is the unique compact free boundary minimal hypersurface in the unit Euclidean ball which the squared norm of the second fundamental form is less than either $\frac{n^2}{4}$ or $\frac{(n-2)^2}{4|x|^2}$. Moreover, we prove analogous results for compact free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in annular domains with a conformally Euclidean metric.
In this article we classify the conformally flat Euclidean hypersurfaces of dimension three with three distinct principal curvatures of $\mathbb{R}^4$, $\mathbb{S}^3\times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^3\times \mathbb{R}$ with the property that the tangent component of the vector field $\partial/\partial t$ is a principal direction at any point. Here $\partial/\partial t$ stands for either a constant unit vector field in $\mathbb{R}^4$ or the unit vector field tangent to the factor $\mathbb{R}$ in the product spaces $\mathbb{S}^3\times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^3\times \mathbb{R}$, respectivel…
We study conformally flat hypersurfaces $f\colon M^{3} \to \Q^{4}(c)$ with three distinct principal curvatures and constant mean curvature $H$ in a space form with constant sectional curvature $c$. First we extend a theorem due to Defever when $c=0$ and show that there is no such hypersurface if $H\neq 0$. Our main results are for the minimal case $H=0$. If $c\neq 0$, we prove that if $f\colon M^{3} \to \Q^{4}(c)$ is a minimal conformally flat hypersurface with three distinct principal curvatures then $f(M^3)$ is an open subset of a generalized cone over a Clifford torus in an umbilical hypers…
There is a one-to-one correspondence between associated families of generic conformally flat (local-)hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional space forms and conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition. In this paper, we study the space of conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition: for a conformally flat 3-metric with the Guichard condition in the interior of the space, an evolution of orthogonal (local-) Riemannian $2$-metrics with constant Gauss curvature $-1$ is determined; for a $2$-metric belonging to a certain class of orthogonal analytic $2$-metrics with constant Gauss cur…
We derive a relationship between the eigenvalues of the Weyl-Schouten tensor of a conformal representative of the conformal infinity of a hyperbolic Poincaré manifold and the principal curvatures on the level sets of its uniquely associated defining function with calculations based on [9] [10]. This relationship generalizes the result for hypersurfaces in ${\H}^{n+1}$ and their connection to the conformal geometry of ${\SS}^n$ as exhibited in [7] and gives a correspondence between Weingarten hypersurfaces in hyperbolic Poincaré manifolds and conformally invariant equations on the conformal inf…
We address the problem of determining the hypersurfaces $f\colon M^{n} \to \mathbb{Q}_s^{n+1}(c)$ with dimension $n\geq 3$ of a pseudo-Riemannian space form of dimension $n+1$, constant curvature $c$ and index $s\in \{0, 1\}$ for which there exists another isometric immersion $\tilde{f}\colon M^{n} \to \mathbb{Q}^{n+1}_{\tilde s}(\tilde{c})$ with $\tilde{c}\neq c$. For $n\geq 4$, we provide a complete solution by extending results for $s=0=\tilde s$ by do Carmo and Dajczer and by Dajczer and the second author. Our main results are for the most interesting case $n=3$, and these are new even in …
In this paper we study several aspects of the geometry of conformally stationary Lorentz manifolds, and particularly of GRW spaces, due to the presence of a closed conformal vector field. More precisely, we begin by extending to these spaces a result of J. Simons on the minimality of cones in Euclidean space, and apply it to the construction of complete, noncompact maximal submanifolds of both de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spaces. Then we state and prove very general Bernstein-type theorems for spacelike hypersurfaces in conformally stationary Lorentz manifolds, one of which not assuming the hy…
Spectrum of a certain class of first order conformally invariant operators on the sphere is explicitly computed. The class contains the (elliptic verions of) Rarita-Schwinger operator and its higher spin analogues.
In this paper, geometric characterizations of conformally flat and radially flat hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^n \times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^n \times \mathbb{R}$ are given by means of their extrinsic geometry. Under suitable conditions on the shape operator, we classify conformally flat hypersurfaces in terms of rotation hypersurfaces. In addition, a close relation between radially flat hypersurfaces and semi-parallel hypersurfaces is established. These results lead to geometric descriptions of hypersurfaces with special intrinsic structures, such as Einstein metrics, Ricci solitons and …
We show that under some non-degeneracy assumption the only submersive harmonic morphism on a conformally flat $3-$sphere is the Hopf fibration. The proof involves an appropriate use the Chern-Simons functional.
In this paper we provide a sharp characterization of the smooth four-dimensional sphere. The assumptions of the theorem are conformally invariant, and can be reduced to an L^2 inequality of the Weyl tensor and positivity of the Yamabe invariant.
In this paper we prove that under a lower bound on the Ricci curvature and an asymptotic assumption on the scalar curvature, a complete conformally compact manifold $(M^{n+1},g)$, with a pole $p$ and with the conformal infinity in the conformal class of the round sphere, has to be the hyperbolic space.
E. Cartan proved that conformally flat hypersurfaces in S^{n+1} for n>3 have at most two distinct principal curvatures and locally envelop a one-parameter family of (n-1)-spheres. We prove that the Gauss-Codazzi equation for conformally flat hypersurfaces in S^4 is a soliton equation, and use a dressing action from soliton theory to construct geometric Ribaucour transforms of these hypersurfaces. We describe the moduli of these hypersurfaces in S^4 and their loop group symmetries. We also generalise these results to conformally flat n-immersions in (2n-2)-spheres with flat normal bundle and co…
We consider conformally flat hypersurfaces in four dimensional space forms with their associated Guichard nets and Lamé's system of equations. We show that the symmetry group of the Lamé's system, satisfying Guichard condition, is given by translations and dilations in the independent variables and dilations in the dependents variables. We obtain the solutions which are invariant under the action of the 2-dimensional subgroups of the symmetry group. For the solutions which are invariant under translations, we obtain the corresponding conformally flat hypersurfaces and we describe the correspon…
We give explicit formulas for all odd order differential intertwinors on the subbundle of the bundle of spinor-$k$-forms that are annihilated by the Clifford multiplication over the odd dimensional standard sphere. The Dirac and Rarita-Schwinger operators appear in the case of $k=0$ and $k=1$, respectively.
In a joint work with Saji, the second and the third authors gave an intrinsic formulation of wave fronts and proved a realization theorem of wave fronts in space forms. As an application, we show that the following four objects are essentially same; * conformally flat n-manifolds (n>=3) with admissible singular points (i.e. admissible GCF-manifolds), * frontals as hypersurfaces in the lightcone Q^{n+1}_+, * frontals as hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space H^{n+1}, * sapacelike frontals as hypersurfaces in the de Sitter space S^{n+1}_1. Recently, the duality of conformally flat Riemannian mani…
In this note we construct an explicit example of a (compact) conformally flat Riemannian manifold which admits a totally geodesic foliation of codimension one with no isoparametric leaves. This answers negatively the question: is every hypersurface with constant principal curvatures isoparametric?
We study properties of non-minimal biharmonic hypersurfaces of spheres. The main result is a CMC Unique Continuation Theorem for biharmonic hypersurfaces of spheres. We then deduce new rigidity theorems to support the Conjecture that biharmonic submanifolds of Euclidean spheres must be of constant mean curvature.
In this note we improve a gap result concerning the range of the mean curvature of complete $CMC$ proper-biharmonic hypersurfaces in unit Euclidean spheres.
We find a monotone quantity along the inverse mean curvature flow and use it to prove an Alexandrov-Fenchel-type inequality for strictly convex hypersurfaces in the $n$-dimensional sphere, $n \geq 3$.
In this paper, we prove that minimal hypersurfaces when $n\geq 3$ and nonzero constant mean curvature hypersurfaces when $n\geq2$ foliated by spheres in parallel horizontal hyperplanes in ${\mathbb{H}}^n \times \mathbb{R}$ must be rotationally symmetric.
It is known that the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in the (n+1)-dimensional spheres are characterized as the only hypersurfaces with weak stability index 0. That is, a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature, cmc, in S^{n+1}, different from an Euclidean sphere, must have stability index greater than or equal to 1. In this paper we prove that the weak stability index of any non-totally umbilical compact hypersurface M\subset S^{n+1} with cmc cannot take the values 1,2,3... n.
This is a survey of local and global classification results concerning Dupin hypersurfaces in $S^n$ (or ${\bf R}^n$) that have been obtained in the context of Lie sphere geometry. The emphasis is on results that relate Dupin hypersurfaces to isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres. Along with these classification results, many important concepts from Lie sphere geometry, such as curvature spheres, Lie curvatures, and Legendre lifts of submanifolds of $S^n$ (or ${\bf R}^n$), are described in detail. The paper also contains several important constructions of Dupin hypersurfaces with certain speci…
Our first objective in this paper is to give a natural formulation of the Christoffel problem for hypersurfaces in $H^{n+1}$, by means of the hyperbolic Gauss map and the notion of hyperbolic curvature radii for hypersurfaces. Our second objective is to provide an explicit equivalence of this Christoffel problem with the famous problem of prescribing scalar curvature on $§^n$ for conformal metrics, posed by Nirenberg and Kazdan-Warner. This construction lets us translate into the hyperbolic setting the known results for the scalar curvature problem, and also provides a hypersurface theory inte…
We study the non-embddability property for a class of real hypersurfaces, called real hypersurfaces of involution type, into the sphere in the low codimensional case, by making use of property of a naturally related Gauss curvature. We also study rigidity problems for conformal maps between a class of Kähler manifolds with pseud-conformally flat metrics.
We are studying a relationship between isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with four distinct principal curvatures and the moment maps of certain Hamiltonian actions. In this paper, we consider the isoparametric hypersurfaces obtained from the isotropy representations of compact irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces of rank two. We prove that the Cartan-Münzner polynomials of these hypersurfaces can be written as squared-norms of the moment maps for some Hamiltonian actions. The proof is based on the structure theory of symmetric spaces.
A hypersurface $M$ in ${\bf R}^n$ or $S^n$ is said to be Dupin if along each curvature surface, the corresponding principal curvature is constant. A Dupin hypersurface is said to be proper Dupin if each principal curvature has constant multiplicity on $M$, i.e., the number of distinct principal curvatures is constant on $M$. The notions of Dupin and proper Dupin hypersurfaces in ${\bf R}^n$ or $S^n$ can be generalized to the setting of Lie sphere geometry, and these properties are easily seen to be invariant under Lie sphere transformations. This makes Lie sphere geometry an effective setting …
In this paper, firstly, inspired by Natário's recent work \cite{Na}, we use the isoperimetric inequality to derive some Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities for closed convex hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space $\H^{n+1}$ and in the sphere $\SS^{n+1}$. We also get the rigidity in the spherical case. Secondly, we use the inverse mean curvature flow in sphere \cite{gerh,Mak-Sch} to prove an optimal Sobolev type inequality for closed convex hypersurfaces in the sphere.
The classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with four or six different principal curvatures is still not complete. In this paper we develop a structural approach that may be helpful for a classification. Instead of working with the isoparametric hypersurface family in the sphere, we consider the associated Lagrangian submanifold of the real Grassmannian of oriented $2$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$. We obtain new geometric insights into classical invariants and identities in terms of the geometry of the Lagrangian submanifold.
Using a new estimate for the Peng-Terng invariant and the multiple-parameter method, we verify a rigidity theorem on the stronger version of Chern Conjecture for minimal hypersurfaces in spheres. More precisely, we prove that if $M$ is a compact minimal hypersurface in $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ whose squared length of the second fundamental form satisfies $0\leq S-n\leq\frac{n}{18}$, then $S\equiv n$ and $M$ is a Clifford torus.
The method of moving frames in Lie sphere geometry has produced significant results in the classification of Dupin hypersurfaces in spheres. What is the secret of its effectiveness? The answer emerges in the classification of nonumbilic isoparametric surfaces in the space form geometries. Using the method of moving frames, the proof of this classification is an elementary exercise. The same proof classifies the cyclides of Dupin in Möbius geometry and finally in Lie sphere geometry, where all nonumbilic Dupin immersions are Lie sphere congruent to each other.
We obtain a complete classification of proper biharmonic hypersurfaces with at most three distinct principal curvatures in sphere spaces with arbitrary dimension. Precisely, together with known results of Balmuş-Montaldo-Oniciuc, we prove that compact orientable proper biharmonic hypersurfaces with at most three distinct principal curvatures in sphere spaces $\mathbb S^{n+1}$ are either the hypersphere $\mathbb S^n(1/\sqrt2)$ or the Clifford hypersurface $\mathbb S^{n_1}(1/\sqrt2)\times\mathbb S^{n_2}(1/\sqrt2)$ with $n_1+n_2=n$ and $n_1\neq n_2$. Moreover, we also show that there does not exi…
We prove a topological rigidity theorem for closed hypersurfaces of the Euclidean sphere and of an elliptic space form. It asserts that, under a lower bound hypothesis on the absolute value of the principal curvatures, the hypersurface is diffeomorphic to a sphere or to a quotient of a sphere by a group action. We also prove another topological rigidity result for hypersurfaces of the sphere that involves the spherical image of its usual Gauss map.
Let $M^n$ be an $n$-dimensional complete and locally conformally flat hypersurface in the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ with constant scalar curvature $n(n-1)$. We show that if the total curvature $\left( \int _ { M } | H | ^ { n } d v \right) ^ { \frac { 1 } { n } }$ of $M$ is sufficiently small, then $M^n$ is totally geodesic.
In this short note we extend an estimate due to J. Simons on the first stability eigenvalue of minimal hypersurfaces in spheres to the singular setting. Specifically, we show that any singular minimal hypersurface in $S^{n+1}$, which is not totally geodesic and satisfies the α-structural hypothesis, has first stability eigenvalue at most -2n, with equality if and only if it is a product of two round spheres. The equality case was settled independently in the classical setting by Wu and Perdomo.
We consider the problem $F=f(ν)$ for strictly convex, closed hypersurfaces in $S^{n+1}$ and solve it for curvature functions $F$ the inverses of which are of class $(K)$.
In this paper, we study the first eigenvalue of Jacobi operator on an $n$-dimensional non-totally umbilical compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature $H$ in the unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$. We give an optimal upper bound for the first eigenvalue of Jacobi operator, which only depends on the mean curvature $H$ and the dimension $n$.
Let M be a closed minimal hypersurface in 5-dimensional Euclidean sphere with constant nonnegative scalar curvature. We prove that, if the sum of the cubes of all principal curvatures and the number of distinct principal curvatures are constant, then M is isoparametric. Moreover, We give all possible values for squared length of the second fundamental form of M. This result provides another piece of supporting evidence to the Chern conjecture.
In this paper, we study $n$-dimensional hypersurfaces with constant $m^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature in a unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$ and construct many compact nontrivial embedded hypersurfaces with constant $m^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature $H_m>0$ in $S^{n+1}(1)$, for $1\leq m\leq n-1$. In particular, if the $4^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature $H_4$ takes value between $\dfrac{1}{(\tan \fracπ{k})^4}$ and $\dfrac{k^4-4}{n(n-4)}$ for any integer $k\geq3$, then there exists an $n$-dimensional ($n\geq 5$) compact nontrivial embedded hypersurface with constant $H_4$ in $S^{n+1}(1)$.
