A hypersurface $M$ in ${\bf R}^n$ or $S^n$ is said to be Dupin if along each curvature surface, the corresponding principal curvature is constant. A Dupin hypersurface is said to be proper Dupin if each principal curvature has constant multiplicity on $M$, i.e., the number of distinct principal curvatures is constant on $M$. The notions of Dupin and proper Dupin hypersurfaces in ${\bf R}^n$ or $S^n$ can be generalized to the setting of Lie sphere geometry, and these properties are easily seen to be invariant under Lie sphere transformations. This makes Lie sphere geometry an effective setting for the study of Dupin hypersurfaces, and many classifications of proper Dupin hypersurfaces have been obtained up to Lie sphere transformations. In these notes, we give a detailed introduction to this method for studying Dupin hypersurfaces in ${\bf R}^n$ or $S^n$, including proofs of several fundamental results.
Similar to the definition of Dupin hypersurface in Riemannian space forms, we define the spacelike Dupin hypersurface in Lorentzian space forms. As conformal invariant objects, spacelike Dupin hypersurfaces are studied in this paper using the framework of conformal geometry. Further we classify the spacelike Dupin hypersurfaces with constant Möbius curvatures, which are the partition ratio of the principal curvatures of the spacelike Dupin hypersurface.
In this paper we show that a Dupin hypersurface with constant Möbius curvatures is Möbius equivalent to either an isoparametric hypersurface in the sphere or a cone over an isoparametric hypersurface in a sphere. We also show that a Dupin hypersurface with constant Laguerre curvatures is Laguerre equivalent to a flat Laguerre isoparametric hypersurface. These results solve the major issues related to the conjectures of Cecil et al on the classification of Dupin hypersurfaces.
A hypersurface $M$ in ${\bf R}^n$ is said to be Dupin if along each curvature surface, the corresponding principal curvature is constant. A Dupin hypersurface is said to be proper Dupin if the number of distinct principal curvatures is constant on $M$, i.e., each continuous principal curvature function has constant multiplicity on $M$. These conditions are preserved by stereographic projection, so this theory is essentially the same for hypersurfaces in ${\bf R}^n$ or $S^n$. The theory of compact proper Dupin hypersurfaces in $S^n$ is closely related to the theory of isoparametric hypersurface…
This is a survey of local and global classification results concerning Dupin hypersurfaces in $S^n$ (or ${\bf R}^n$) that have been obtained in the context of Lie sphere geometry. The emphasis is on results that relate Dupin hypersurfaces to isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres. Along with these classification results, many important concepts from Lie sphere geometry, such as curvature spheres, Lie curvatures, and Legendre lifts of submanifolds of $S^n$ (or ${\bf R}^n$), are described in detail. The paper also contains several important constructions of Dupin hypersurfaces with certain speci…
The method of moving frames in Lie sphere geometry has produced significant results in the classification of Dupin hypersurfaces in spheres. What is the secret of its effectiveness? The answer emerges in the classification of nonumbilic isoparametric surfaces in the space form geometries. Using the method of moving frames, the proof of this classification is an elementary exercise. The same proof classifies the cyclides of Dupin in Möbius geometry and finally in Lie sphere geometry, where all nonumbilic Dupin immersions are Lie sphere congruent to each other.
If $M$ is an isoparametric hypersurface in a sphere $S^n$ with four distrinct principal curvatures, then the principal curvatures $κ_1,...,κ_4$ can be ordered so that their multiplicities satisfy $m_1=m_2$ and $m_3=m_4$, and the cross-ratio $r$ of the principal curvatures (the Lie curvature) equals -1. In this paper, we prove that if $M$ is an irreducible connected proper Dupin hypersurface in $\R^n$ (or $S^n$) with four distinct principal curvatures with multiplicities $m_1=m_2 \geq 1$ and $m_3=m_4=1$, and constant Lie curvature $r=-1$, then $M$ is equivalent by Lie sphere transformation to a…
A hypersurface $M^{n-1}$ in a real space-form ${\bf R}^n$, $S^n$ or $H^n$ is isoparametric if it has constant principal curvatures. For ${\bf R}^n$ and $H^n$, the classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces is complete and relatively simple, but as Elie Cartan showed in a series of four papers in 1938-1940, the subject is much deeper and more complex for hypersurfaces in the sphere $S^n$. A hypersurface $M^{n-1}$ in a real space-form is proper Dupin if the number $g$ of distinct principal curvatures is constant on $M^{n-1}$, and each principal curvature function is constant along each leaf o…
We show that every spherical 2-Dupin submanifold that is not a hypersurface is conformally congruent to the standard embedding of the real, complex, quaternionic or octonionic projective plane. We also classify 2-CPC, 2-umbilical and weakly 2-umbilical submanifolds in space forms.
A hypersurface $M^{n-1}$ in Euclidean space $E^n$ is proper Dupin if the number of distinct principal curvatures is constant on $M^{n-1}$, and each principal curvature function is constant along each leaf of its principal foliation. This paper was originally published in 1989 (see Comments below), and it develops a method for the local study of proper Dupin hypersurfaces in the context of Lie sphere geometry using moving frames. This method has been effective in obtaining several classification theorems of proper Dupin hypersurfaces since that time. This updated version of the paper contains t…
We prove that any connected proper Dupin hypersurface in $\R^n$ is analytic algebraic and is an open subset of a connected component of an irreducible algebraic set. We prove the same result for any connected non-proper Dupin hypersurface in $\R^n$ that satisfies a certain finiteness condition. Hence any taut submanifold M in $\R^n$, whose tube $M_ε$ satisfies this finiteness condition, is analytic algebraic and is a connected component of an irreducible algebraic set. In particular, we prove that every taut submanifold of dimension $m \leq 4$ is algebraic.
We prove some new rigidity results for proper biharmonic immersions in ${\mathbb S}^n$ of the following types: Dupin hypersurfaces; hypersurfaces, both compact and non-compact, with bounded norm of the second fundamental form; hypersurfaces satisfying intrinsic properties; PMC submanifolds; parallel submanifolds.
We discuss channel surfaces in the context of Lie sphere geometry and characterise them as certain $Ω_{0}$-surfaces. Since $Ω_{0}$-surfaces possess a rich transformation theory, we study the behaviour of channel surfaces under these transformations. Furthermore, by using certain Dupin cyclide congruences, we characterise Ribaucour pairs of channel surfaces.
We study properties of non-minimal biharmonic hypersurfaces of spheres. The main result is a CMC Unique Continuation Theorem for biharmonic hypersurfaces of spheres. We then deduce new rigidity theorems to support the Conjecture that biharmonic submanifolds of Euclidean spheres must be of constant mean curvature.
In this note we improve a gap result concerning the range of the mean curvature of complete $CMC$ proper-biharmonic hypersurfaces in unit Euclidean spheres.
We find a monotone quantity along the inverse mean curvature flow and use it to prove an Alexandrov-Fenchel-type inequality for strictly convex hypersurfaces in the $n$-dimensional sphere, $n \geq 3$.
In this paper, we prove that minimal hypersurfaces when $n\geq 3$ and nonzero constant mean curvature hypersurfaces when $n\geq2$ foliated by spheres in parallel horizontal hyperplanes in ${\mathbb{H}}^n \times \mathbb{R}$ must be rotationally symmetric.
It is known that the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in the (n+1)-dimensional spheres are characterized as the only hypersurfaces with weak stability index 0. That is, a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature, cmc, in S^{n+1}, different from an Euclidean sphere, must have stability index greater than or equal to 1. In this paper we prove that the weak stability index of any non-totally umbilical compact hypersurface M\subset S^{n+1} with cmc cannot take the values 1,2,3... n.
We are studying a relationship between isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with four distinct principal curvatures and the moment maps of certain Hamiltonian actions. In this paper, we consider the isoparametric hypersurfaces obtained from the isotropy representations of compact irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces of rank two. We prove that the Cartan-Münzner polynomials of these hypersurfaces can be written as squared-norms of the moment maps for some Hamiltonian actions. The proof is based on the structure theory of symmetric spaces.
In this paper, firstly, inspired by Natário's recent work \cite{Na}, we use the isoperimetric inequality to derive some Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities for closed convex hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space $\H^{n+1}$ and in the sphere $\SS^{n+1}$. We also get the rigidity in the spherical case. Secondly, we use the inverse mean curvature flow in sphere \cite{gerh,Mak-Sch} to prove an optimal Sobolev type inequality for closed convex hypersurfaces in the sphere.
The classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with four or six different principal curvatures is still not complete. In this paper we develop a structural approach that may be helpful for a classification. Instead of working with the isoparametric hypersurface family in the sphere, we consider the associated Lagrangian submanifold of the real Grassmannian of oriented $2$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$. We obtain new geometric insights into classical invariants and identities in terms of the geometry of the Lagrangian submanifold.
Using a new estimate for the Peng-Terng invariant and the multiple-parameter method, we verify a rigidity theorem on the stronger version of Chern Conjecture for minimal hypersurfaces in spheres. More precisely, we prove that if $M$ is a compact minimal hypersurface in $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ whose squared length of the second fundamental form satisfies $0\leq S-n\leq\frac{n}{18}$, then $S\equiv n$ and $M$ is a Clifford torus.
We obtain a complete classification of proper biharmonic hypersurfaces with at most three distinct principal curvatures in sphere spaces with arbitrary dimension. Precisely, together with known results of Balmuş-Montaldo-Oniciuc, we prove that compact orientable proper biharmonic hypersurfaces with at most three distinct principal curvatures in sphere spaces $\mathbb S^{n+1}$ are either the hypersphere $\mathbb S^n(1/\sqrt2)$ or the Clifford hypersurface $\mathbb S^{n_1}(1/\sqrt2)\times\mathbb S^{n_2}(1/\sqrt2)$ with $n_1+n_2=n$ and $n_1\neq n_2$. Moreover, we also show that there does not exi…
We prove a topological rigidity theorem for closed hypersurfaces of the Euclidean sphere and of an elliptic space form. It asserts that, under a lower bound hypothesis on the absolute value of the principal curvatures, the hypersurface is diffeomorphic to a sphere or to a quotient of a sphere by a group action. We also prove another topological rigidity result for hypersurfaces of the sphere that involves the spherical image of its usual Gauss map.
Let $M^n$ be an $n$-dimensional complete and locally conformally flat hypersurface in the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ with constant scalar curvature $n(n-1)$. We show that if the total curvature $\left( \int _ { M } | H | ^ { n } d v \right) ^ { \frac { 1 } { n } }$ of $M$ is sufficiently small, then $M^n$ is totally geodesic.
In this short note we extend an estimate due to J. Simons on the first stability eigenvalue of minimal hypersurfaces in spheres to the singular setting. Specifically, we show that any singular minimal hypersurface in $S^{n+1}$, which is not totally geodesic and satisfies the α-structural hypothesis, has first stability eigenvalue at most -2n, with equality if and only if it is a product of two round spheres. The equality case was settled independently in the classical setting by Wu and Perdomo.
We consider the problem $F=f(ν)$ for strictly convex, closed hypersurfaces in $S^{n+1}$ and solve it for curvature functions $F$ the inverses of which are of class $(K)$.
In this paper, we study the first eigenvalue of Jacobi operator on an $n$-dimensional non-totally umbilical compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature $H$ in the unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$. We give an optimal upper bound for the first eigenvalue of Jacobi operator, which only depends on the mean curvature $H$ and the dimension $n$.
The aim of this paper is to verify that the study of generic conformally flat hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional space forms is reduced to a surface theory in the standard 3-sphere. The conformal structure of generic conformally flat (local-)hypersurfaces is characterized as conformally flat (local-)3-metrics with the Guichard condition. Then, there is a certain class of orthogonal analytic (local-)Riemannian 2-metrics with constant Gauss curvature -1 such that any 2-metric of the class gives rise to a one-parameter family of conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition. In this paper, w…
Let M be a closed minimal hypersurface in 5-dimensional Euclidean sphere with constant nonnegative scalar curvature. We prove that, if the sum of the cubes of all principal curvatures and the number of distinct principal curvatures are constant, then M is isoparametric. Moreover, We give all possible values for squared length of the second fundamental form of M. This result provides another piece of supporting evidence to the Chern conjecture.
In this paper, we study $n$-dimensional hypersurfaces with constant $m^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature in a unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$ and construct many compact nontrivial embedded hypersurfaces with constant $m^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature $H_m>0$ in $S^{n+1}(1)$, for $1\leq m\leq n-1$. In particular, if the $4^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature $H_4$ takes value between $\dfrac{1}{(\tan \fracπ{k})^4}$ and $\dfrac{k^4-4}{n(n-4)}$ for any integer $k\geq3$, then there exists an $n$-dimensional ($n\geq 5$) compact nontrivial embedded hypersurface with constant $H_4$ in $S^{n+1}(1)$.
In this paper, we study $n$-dimensional complete minimal hypersurfaces in a unit sphere. We prove that an $n$-dimensional complete minimal hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in a unit sphere with $f_3$ constant is isometric to the totally geodesic sphere or the Clifford torus if $S\leq 1.8252 n-0.712898$, where $S$ denotes the squared norm of the second fundamental form of this hypersurface.
In this paper, I study the isoparametric hypersurfaces in a Randers sphere $(S^n,F)$ of constant flag curvature, with the navigation datum $(h,W)$. I prove that an isoparametric hypersurface $M$ for the standard round sphere $(S^n,h)$ which is tangent to $W$ remains isoparametric for $(S^n,F)$ after the navigation process. This observation provides a special class of isoparametric hypersurfaces in $(S^n,F)$, which can be equivalently described as the regular level sets of isoparametric functions $f$ satisfying $-f$ is transnormal. I provide a classification for these special isoparametric hype…
In this paper, firstly, we show the existence of a compact embedded constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurface $Σ_1$ in $\mathbb{S}^{2n}$ of the type $S^{n-1} \times S^{n-1} \times S^{1}$. Moreover, the hypersurface $Σ_1$ exhibits $O(n)\times O(n)$ symmetry. Secondly, we show that there exists a compact embedded CMC-hypersurface $Σ_2 \subset \mathbb{S}^{3n-1}$ of the type $S^{n-1} \times S^{n-1} \times S^{n-1} \times S^{1}$. These results generalize the results of Carlotto and Schulz.
The Gauss map of a hypersurface of a unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$ is a Lagrangian immersion into the complex quadric $Q^n$ and, conversely, every Lagrangian submanifold of $Q^n$ is locally the image under the Gauss map of several hypersurfaces of $S^{n+1}(1)$. In this paper, we give explicit constructions for these correspondences and we prove a relation between the principal curvatures of a hypersurface of $S^{n+1}(1)$ and the local angle functions of the corresponding Lagrangian submanifold of $Q^n$. The existence of such a relation is remarkable since the definition of the angle functions depen…
The consideration of the so-called rotation minimizing frames allows for a simple and elegant characterization of plane and spherical curves in Euclidean space via a linear equation relating the coefficients that dictate the frame motion. In this work, we extend these investigations to characterize curves that lie on a geodesic sphere or totally geodesic hypersurface in a Riemannian manifold of constant curvature. Using that geodesic spherical curves are normal curves, i.e., they are the image of an Euclidean spherical curve under the exponential map, we are able to characterize geodesic spher…
For a Riemannian manifold $M^{n+1}$ and a compact domain $Ω\subset M^{n+1}$ bounded by a hypersurface $\partial Ω$ with normal curvature bounded below, estimates are obtained in terms of the distance from $O$ to $\partial Ω$ for the angle between the geodesic line joining a fixed interior point $O$ in $Ω$ to a point on $\partial Ω$ and the outward normal to the surface. Estimates for the width of a spherical shell containing such a hypersurface are also presented.
In this paper, we study $n$-dimensional hypersurfaces with constant $m^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature $H_m$ in a unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$ and prove that if the $m^{\text{th}}$ mean curvature $H_m$ takes value between $\dfrac{1}{(\tan \fracπ{k})^m}$ and $\frac{k^2-2}{n}(\frac{k^2+m-2}{n-m})^{\frac{m-2}{2}}$ for $1\leq m\leq n-1$ and any integer $k\geq 2$, then there exists at least one $n$-dimensional compact nontrivial embedded hypersurface with constant $H_m>0$ in $S^{n+1}(1)$. When $m=1$, our results reduce to the results of Perdomo \cite{[P]}; when $m=2$ and $m=4$, our results reduce to the re…
It is a well known fact that, if $Σ$ is an Einstein hypersurface with positive scalar curvature, then it is a round sphere. We give a stable version of this result showing that if a hypersurface is almost Einstein in a $L^p$-sense, then it is $W^{2, \, p}$ - close to the round sphere. The result is given in a quantitative way.
We prove that hypersurfaces of $\R^{n+1}$ which are almost extremal for the Reilly inequality on $λ_1$ and have $L^p$-bounded mean curvature ($p>n$) are Hausdorff close to a sphere, have almost constant mean curvature and have a spectrum which asymptotically contains the spectrum of the sphere. We prove the same result for the Hasanis-Koutroufiotis inequality on extrinsic radius. We also prove that when a supplementary $L^q$ bound on the second fundamental is assumed, the almost extremal manifolds are Lipschitz close to a sphere when $q>n$, but not necessarily diffeomorphic to a sphere when $q…
