We develop the theory of generalized Weierstrass sigma- and \wp-functions defined on a trigonal curve of genus three. In particular we give a list of the associated partial differential equations satisfied by the \wp-functions, a proof that the coefficients of the power series expansion of the sigma-function are polynomials of moduli parameters, and the derivation of two addition formulae.
We compute the rational cohomology of the moduli space of trigonal curves of genus 5. We do this by considering their natural embedding in the first Hirzebruch surface and by using Gorinov-Vassiliev's method.
The trigonal curves of genus 5 can be represented by projective plane quintics that have 1 singularity of delta invariant 1. Combining this with a partial sieve method for plane curves we count the number of such curves over any finite field. The main application is that this then gives the motivic Euler characteristic of the moduli space of trigonal curves of genus 5.
We discuss the theory of generalized Weierstrass $σ$ and $\wp$ functions defined on a trigonal curve of genus four, following earlier work on the genus three case. The specific example of the "purely trigonal" (or "cyclic trigonal") curve $y^3=x^5+λ_4 x^4 +λ_3 x^3+λ_2 x^2 +λ_1 x+λ_0$ is discussed in detail, including a list of some of the associated partial differential equations satisfied by the $\wp$ functions, and the derivation of an addition formulae.
To every double cover ramified in two points of a general trigonal curve of genus g, one can associate an étale double cover of a tetragonal curve of genus g+1. We show that the corresponding Prym varieties are canonically isomorphic as principally polarized abelian varieties.
In this paper we study the infinitesimal deformations of a trigonal curve that preserve the trigonal series and such that the associate infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure (IVHS) is of rank 1. We show that if the genus g is greater or equal to 8 or g=6,7 and the curve is Maroni general, this locus is zero dimensional. Moreover, we complete a result of Naranjo and Pirola. We show in fact that if the genus g is greater or equal to 6, the hyperelliptic locus is the only 2g-1-dimensional sub-locus Y of the moduli space of curves of genus g, such that for the general element [C] in Y, its Ja…
This paper provides an algorithm enumerating superspecial trigonal curves of genus $5$ over finite fields. Executing the algorithm over a computer algebra system Magma, we enumerate them over finite fields $\mathbb{F}_{p^a}$ for any natural number $a$ if $p \leq 7$ and for odd $a$ if $p \leq 13$.
We develop the theory of Abelian functions associated with cyclic trigonal curves by considering two new cases. We investigate curves of genus six and seven and consider whether it is the trigonal nature or the genus which dictates certain areas of the theory. We present solutions to the Jacobi inversion problem, sets of relations between the Abelian function, links to the Boussinesq equation and a new addition formula.
Let $C$ be a trigonal curve of genus $g\ge 5$ and let $T$ be the unique trigonal line bundle inducing a map $π: C \stackrel{3:1}{\longrightarrow} \mathbb{P}^1$. This note provides a short and easy proof of the normal generation for the residual line bundle $K_C\otimes T^{-1}$ for curves of genus $g\ge 7$. Moreover, we compute the minimal free resolution of the embedded curve $C\subset \mathbb{P}(H^0(C,K_C\otimes T^{-n})^*)$ for the residual line bundle $K_C\otimes T^{-n}$ for $n\ge 1$ and $g \ge 3n+4$.
This paper gives a natural extension of Frobenius-Stickelberger formula and Kiepert formula to Abelian functions for "Purely Trigonal Curves", especially, of degree four. A description on the theory of Abelian functions for general trigonal curves of degree four is also included.
In this paper we study the topology of the stack $\mathcal{T}_g$ of smooth trigonal curves of genus g, over the complex field. We make use of a construction by the first named author and Vistoli, that describes $\mathcal{T}_g$ as a quotient stack of the complement of the discriminant. This allows us to use techniques developed by the second named author to give presentations of the orbifold fundamental group of $\mathcal{T}_g$, of its substrata with prescribed Maroni invariant and describe their relation with the mapping class group $\mathcal{M}ap_g$ of Riemann surfaces of genus g.
The number $N_9(5)$, the maximal number of $\mathbb{F}_9$-rational points on curves over $\mathbb{F}_9$ of genus $5$ is unknown, but it is known that $32 \le N_9(5)\le 35$. In this paper, we enumerate hyperelliptic curves and trigonal curves over $\mathbb{F}_3$ which have many $\mathbb{F}_9$-rational points (and $\mathbb{F}_3$-rational points), especially the maximal number of $\mathbb{F}_9$-rational points of those curves is $30$. Kudo-Harashita studied the nonhyperelliptic and nontrigonal case, where they found a new example of curves (over $\mathbb{F}_3$) of genus five which attains $32$ and…
We prove some results on algebraic curves $X$ of genus $g\geq 2$ in characteristic $0$. For example: Assume that $X$ has an automorphism $σ$ of prime order $p\geq 5$. If $σ$ has no fixed points, then $X$ cannot be trigonal. On the other hand, if $σ$ has fixed points, then $X$ is bielliptic only if it belongs to one of three extremal types of curves of small genus.
A cyclic trigonal curve of genus three is a $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Galois cover of $\mathbb{P}^1$, therefore can be written as a smooth plane curve with equation $y^3 = f(x) =(x - b_1) (x - b_2) (x - b_3) (x - b_4)$. Following Weierstrass for the hyperelliptic case, we define an ``$\mathrm{al}$'' function for this curve and $\mathrm{al}^{(c)}_r$, $c=0,1,2$, for each one of three particular covers of the Jacobian of the curve, and $r=1,2,3,4$ for a finite branchpoint $(b_r,0)$. This generalization of the Jacobi $\mathrm{sn}$, $\mathrm{cn}$, $\mathrm{dn}$ functions satisfies the relation: $$ \sum_{r=1}^…
Our fundamental result is the construction of new subvarieties in the varieties of power sums for the Scorza quartic of any general pairs of trigonal curves and non-effective theta characteristics. This is a generalization of Mukai's description of smooth prime Fano threefolds of genus twelve as the varieties of power sums for plane quartics. Among other applications, we give an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Dolgachev and Kanev on the existence of the Scorza quartic for any general pairs of curves and non-effective theta characteristics.
We prove that the rational cohomology $H^i(\mathcal{T}_g;\mathbf{Q})$ of the moduli space of trigonal curves of genus $g$ is independent of $g$ in degree $i<\lfloor g/4\rfloor.$ This makes possible to define the stable cohomology ring as $H^\bullet(\mathcal{T}_g;\mathbf{Q})$ for a sufficiently large $g.$ We also compute the stable cohomology ring, which turns out to be isomorphic to the tautological ring. This is done by studying the embedding of trigonal curves in Hirzebruch surfaces and using Gorinov-Vassiliev's method.
In 2014 A. Degtyarev, I. Itenberg and the author gave a description, up to fiberwise equivariant deformations, of maximally inflected real trigonal curves of type~I (over a base $ B $ of an arbitrary genus) in terms of the combinatorics of sufficiently simple graphs and for $ B=\mathbb{P}^1 $ obtained a complete classification of such curves. In this paper, the mentioned results are extended to maximally inflected real trigonal curves of type~II over $ B=\mathbb{P}^1 $. As usual, the results for such curves are extended to real Jacobian elliptic surfaces with all singular fibers real.
We study real trigonal curves and elliptic surfaces of type $\I$ (over a base of an arbitrary genus) and their fiberwise equivariant deformations. The principal tool is a real version of Grothendieck's \emph{dessins d'enfants}. We give a description of maximally inflected trigonal curves of type $\I$ in terms of the combinatorics of sufficiently simple graphs and, in the case of the rational base, obtain a complete classification of such curves. As a consequence, these results lead to conclusions concerning real Jacobian elliptic surfaces of type $\I$ with all singular fibers real.
We prove that a certain Brill-Noether locus over a non-hyperelliptic curve $C$ of genus 4, is isomorphic to the \textit{Donagi-Izadi cubic threefold} in the case when the pencils of the two trigonal line bundles of $C$ coincide.
Let C be a non-hyperelliptic algebraic curve of genus at least 3. Enriques and Babbage proved that its canonical image is the intersection of the quadrics that contain it, except when C is trigonal (that is, it has a linear system of degree 3 and dimension 1) or C is isomorphic to a plane quintic (genus 6). We present a method to decide whether a given algebraic curve is trigonal, and in the affirmative case to compute a map from C to the projective line whose fibers cut out the linear system. It is based on the Lie algebra method presented in Schicho (2006). Our algorithm is part of a larger …
We study the moduli of trigonal curves. We establish the exact upper bound of ${36(g+1)}/(5g+1)$ for the slope of trigonal fibrations. Here, the slope of any fibration $X\to B$ of stable curves with smooth general member is the ratio $δ_B/λ_B$ of the restrictions of the boundary class $δ$ and the Hodge class $λ$ on the moduli space $\bar{\mathfrak{M}}_g$ to the base $B$. We associate to a trigonal family $X$ a canonical rank two vector bundle $V$, and show that for Bogomolov-semistable $V$ the slope satisfies the stronger inequality ${δ_B}/{λ_B}\leq 7+{6}/{g}$. We further describe the rational…
Genus 5 curves can be hyperelliptic, trigonal, or non-hyperelliptic non-trigonal, whose model is a complete intersection of three quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^4$. We present and explain algorithms we used to determine, up to isomorphism over $\mathbb{F}_2$, all genus 5 curves defined over $\mathbb{F}_2$, and we do that separately for each of the three mentioned types. We consider these curves in terms of isogeny classes over $\mathbb{F}_2$ of their Jacobians or their Newton polygons, and for each of the three types, we compute the number of curves over $\mathbb{F}_2$ weighted by the size of their $…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic 0, let $C/k$ be a uniquely trigonal genus 4 curve, and let $P \in C(k)$ be a simply ramified point of the uniquely trigonal morphism. We construct an assignment of an orbit of an algebraic group of type $E_8$ acting on a specific variety to each element of $J_C(k)/2$. The algebraic group and variety are independent of the choice of $(C,P)$. We also construct a similar identification for uniquely trigonal genus 4 curves $C$ with $P \in C(k)$ a totally ramified point of the trigonal morphism. Our assignments are analogous to the assignment of a genus 3 curve …
We study the second Gaussian map for a curve X of genus g, in relation with the second fundamental form of the period map. We exhibit a class of infinitely many curves with surjective second Gaussian map. We compute its rank on the hyperelliptic and trigonal locus and show global generation of its image for X not hyperelliptic nor trigonal.
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1109.4986, where we proved that a general smooth curve of odd genus, canonically or bicanonically embedded, has semistable finite Hilbert points. Here, we prove that a generic canonically embedded curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. More precisely, we prove that a generic canonically embedded trigonal curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. Furthermore, we show that the analogous result fails for bielliptic curves. Namely, the Hilbert points of bielliptic curves are asymptotically semistable but become non-semistable below…
Let $C$ be a non-hyperelliptic algebraic curve. It is known that its canonical image is the intersection of the quadrics that contain it, except when $C$ is trigonal (that is, it has a linear system of degree 3 and dimension 1) or isomorphic to a plane quintic (genus 6). In this context, we present a method to decide whether a given algebraic curve is trigonal, and in the affirmative case to compute a map from $C$ to the projective line whose fibers cut out the linear system.
We study smooth curves on abelian surfaces, especially for genus 4, when the complementary subvariety in the Jacobian is also a surface. We show that up to translation there is exactly one genus 4 hyperelliptic curve on a general (1, 3)-polarised abelian surface. We investigate these curves and show that their Jacobians contain a surface and its dual as complementary abelian subvarieties.
We explain how we computed equations for all genus 4 curves defined of the field with 2 elements, up-to-isomorphism, and some of the data we obtained. We give descriptions also of nice models for genus 4 curves over characteristic 2 fields, in both the hyperelliptic case and the trigonal case.
We study the existence of Artin-Schreier curves with large $ a$-number. We also give bounds on the $a$-number of trigonal curves of genus $5$ in small characteristic.
In this paper we prove a general theorem concerning the number of translation classes of curves of genus $g$ belonging to a fixed cohomology class in a polarized abelian variety of dimension $g$. For $g = 2$ we recover results of Göttsche and Bryan-Leung. For $g = 3$ we deduce explicit numbers for these classes.
In this paper we construct an abelian fibration over ${\bf P}^3$ on the Hilbert cube of the primitive K3 surface of genus 9. After the abelian fibration constructed by Mukai on the Hilbert square on the primitive K3 surface S of genus 5, this is the second example where the abelian fibration on such Hilb_n(S) is directly constructed. Our example is also the first known abelian fibration on a Hilbert scheme Hilb_n(S) of a primitive K3 surface S which is not the Hilbert square of S; the primitive K3 surfaces on the Hilbert square of which such a fibration exists are known by a recent result of H…
This paper deals with singularities of genus 2 curves on a general (d_1,d_2)-polarized abelian surface (S,L). In analogy with Chen's results concerning rational curves on K3 surfaces [Ch1,Ch2], it is natural to ask whether all such curves are nodal. We prove that this holds true if and only if d_2 is not divisible by 4. In the cases where d_2 is a multiple of 4, we exhibit genus 2 curves in |L| that have a triple, 4-tuple or 6-tuple point. We show that these are the only possible types of unnodal singularities of a genus 2 curve in |L|. Furthermore, with no assumption on d_1 and d_2, we prove …
We discuss variations of Hodge structures on abelian varieties that arise from intersecting translates of theta divisors with a special focus on the case of abelian varieties of dimension 4
The arithmetic geometric mean algorithm for calculation of elliptic integrals of the first type was introduced by Gauss. The analog algorithm for Abelian integrals of genus 2 was introduced by Richelot (1837) and Humbert (1901). We present the analogous algorithm for Abelian integrals of genus 3.
In the previous paper, we construct new subvarieties in the varieties of power sums for certain quartic hypersurfaces. In this paper, we show that these quartics coincide with the Scorza quartics of general pairs of trigonal curves and ineffective theta characteristics. Among other applications, we give an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Dolgachev and Kanev on the existence of the Scorza quartics for any general pairs of curves and ineffective theta characteristics. We also give descriptions of the moduli spaces of trigonal even spin curves. For curves of genus 4, we deepen this descri…
We construct an infinite number of Shimura curves contained in the locus of hyperelliptic Jacobians of genus 3. In the opposite direction, we show that in genus 3 the only possible non-complete (in the moduli space of abelian threefolds) Kuga curves contained in the hyperelliptic locus have the same degeneration data as that of the examples we construct. The locus of genus 3 hyperelliptic Jacobians is a divisor within the moduli space of principally polarized abelian threefolds, and our result demonstrates the techniques we develop more generally for dealing with Shimura curves contained withi…
We present a new method to explicitly define Abelian functions associated with algebraic curves, for the purpose of finding bases for the relevant vector spaces of such functions. We demonstrate the procedure with the functions associated with a trigonal curve of genus four. The main motivation for the construction of such bases is that it allows systematic methods for the derivation of the addition formulae and differential equations satisfied by the functions. We present a new 3-term 2-variable addition formulae and a complete set of differential equations to generalise the classic Weierstra…
In this note, we characterize certain maximal superspecial curves of genus $5$ over finite fields. Specifically, we prove that the desingularization $T_p$ of $x y z^3 + x^5 + y^5 = 0$ is a maximal superspecial trigonal curve of genus $5$ if and only if $p \equiv -1 \pmod{15}$ or $p \equiv 11 \pmod{15}$. Moreover, we give families of maximal curves of more general type, which include $T_p$.
We study the space of non-simple polarised abelian surfaces. Specifically, we describe for which pairs $(m,n)$ the locus of polarised abelian surfaces of type $(1,d)$ that contain two complementary elliptic curve of exponents $m,n$, denoted $\mathcal{E}_d(m,n)$ is non-empty. We show that if $d$ is square-free, the locus $\mathcal{E}_d(m,n)$ is an irreducible surface (if non-empty). We also show that the loci $\mathcal{E}_d(d,d)$ can have many components if $d$ is an odd square. As an application, we show that for a genus $3$ curve with a completely decomposable Jacobian (i.e. isogenous to a pr…
We show how to calculate the Euler characteristic of a local system associated to an irreducible representation of the symplectic group of genus 3 on the moduli space of curves of genus 3 and the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension 3.
Among abelian extensions of a congruence function field, an asymptotic relation of class number and genus is established. The proof is classical, employing well-known results from congruence function field theory.
We discuss a family of multi-term addition formulae for Weierstrass functions on specialized curves of genus one and two with many automorphisms. In the genus one case we find new addition formulae for the equianharmonic and lemniscate cases, and in genus two we find some new addition formulae for a number of curves, including the Burnside curve.
We develop the theory of Abelian functions associated with algebraic curves. The growth in computer power and an advancement of efficient symbolic computation techniques has allowed for recent progress in this area. In this paper we focus on the genus three cases, comparing the two canonical classes of hyperelliptic and trigonal curves. We present new addition formulae, derive bases for the spaces of Abelian functions and discuss the differential equations such functions satisfy.
We show that any Fermat hypercubic is apolar to a trigonal curve, and vice versa. We show also that the Waring number of the polar hypercubic associated to a tetragonal curve of genus $g$ is at most $\lceil 3/2g - 7/2\rceil$, and for a large class of them is at most $4/3g - 3$.
In the first part of our paper, we show that there exist non-isomorphic derived equivalent genus $1$ curves, and correspondingly there exist non-isomorphic moduli spaces of stable vector bundles on genus $1$ curves in general. Neither occurs over an algebraically closed field. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for two genus $1$ curves to be derived equivalent, and we go on to study when two principal homogeneous spaces for an abelian variety have equivalent derived categories. We apply our results to study twisted derived equivalences of the form $D^b(J,α)\simeq D^b(J,β)$, when $J$ i…
