Genus 5 curves can be hyperelliptic, trigonal, or non-hyperelliptic non-trigonal, whose model is a complete intersection of three quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^4$. We present and explain algorithms we used to determine, up to isomorphism over $\mathbb{F}_2$, all genus 5 curves defined over $\mathbb{F}_2$, and we do that separately for each of the three mentioned types. We consider these curves in terms of isogeny classes over $\mathbb{F}_2$ of their Jacobians or their Newton polygons, and for each of the three types, we compute the number of curves over $\mathbb{F}_2$ weighted by the size of their $\mathbb{F}_2$-automorphism groups.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number and be an integer coprime to $p$. We survey an algorithm for computing explicit rational representations of $(\ell,...,\ell)$-isogenies between Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of arbitrary genus over an extension $K$ of the field of $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}\_p$. The algorithm has a quasi-linear complexity in $\ell$ as well as in the genus of the curves.
The number $N_9(5)$, the maximal number of $\mathbb{F}_9$-rational points on curves over $\mathbb{F}_9$ of genus $5$ is unknown, but it is known that $32 \le N_9(5)\le 35$. In this paper, we enumerate hyperelliptic curves and trigonal curves over $\mathbb{F}_3$ which have many $\mathbb{F}_9$-rational points (and $\mathbb{F}_3$-rational points), especially the maximal number of $\mathbb{F}_9$-rational points of those curves is $30$. Kudo-Harashita studied the nonhyperelliptic and nontrigonal case, where they found a new example of curves (over $\mathbb{F}_3$) of genus five which attains $32$ and…
We compute rational points on genus $3$ odd degree hyperelliptic curves $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ that have Jacobians of Mordell-Weil rank $0$. The computation applies the Chabauty-Coleman method to find the zero set of a certain system of $p$-adic integrals, which is known to be finite and include the set of rational points $C(\mathbb{Q})$. We implemented an algorithm in Sage to carry out the Chabauty-Coleman method on a database of $5870$ curves.
We describe an algorithm, based on the properties of the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius, to compute $\operatorname{End}_{\overline{K}}(A)$ when $A$ is the Jacobian of a nice genus-2 curve over a number field $K$. We use this algorithm to confirm that the description of the structure of the geometric endomorphism ring of $\operatorname{Jac}(C)$ given in the LMFDB ($L$-functions and modular forms database) is correct for all the genus 2 curves $C$ currently listed in it. We also discuss the determination of the field of definition of the endomorphisms in some special cases.
We develop an algorithm to compute Fourier expansions of vector valued modular for Weil representations. As an application, we compute explicit linear equivalences of special divisors on modular varieties of orthogonal type. We define three families of Hecke operators for Jacobi forms, and analyze the induced action on vector valued modular forms. The newspaces attached to one of these families are used to give a more memory efficient version of our algorithm.
We construct two pencils of bielliptic curves of genus three and genus five. The first pencil is associated with a general abelian surface with a polarization of type $(1,2)$. The second pencil is related to the first by an unramified double cover, the Prym variety of which is canonically isomorphic to the Jacobian of a very general curve of genus two. Our results are obtained by analyzing suitable elliptic fibrations on the associated Kummer surfaces and rational double covers among them.
We introduce an algorithm to compute the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 over the rationals. We apply a Magma implementation of our algorithm to a database of curves with low discriminant due to Sutherland as well as a list of curves with small coefficients. In the process, we find several torsion structures not previously described in the literature. The algorithm is a generalisation of an algorithm for genus 2 due to Stoll, which we extend to abelian varieties satisfying certain conditions. The idea is to compute p-adic torsion lifts of points ov…
We present a quasi-linear algorithm to compute isogenies between Jacobians of curves of genus 2 and 3 starting from the equation of the curve and a maximal isotropic subgroup of the l-torsion, for l an odd prime number, generalizing the Vélu's formula of genus 1. This work is based from the paper "Computing functions on Jacobians and their quotients" of Jean-Marc Couveignes and Tony Ezome. We improve their genus 2 case algorithm, generalize it for genus 3 hyperelliptic curves and introduce a way to deal with the genus 3 non-hyperelliptic case, using algebraic theta functions.
We give a solution to the weak Schottky problem for genus five Jacobians with a vanishing theta null, answering a question of Grushevsky and Salvati Manni. More precisely, we show that if a principally polarized abelian variety of dimension five has a vanishing theta null with a quadric tangent cone of rank at most three, then it is in the Jacobian locus, up to extra irreducible components. We employ a degeneration argument, together with a study of the ramification loci for the Gauss map of a theta divisor.
We show that the elliptic genus of the higher rank E-strings can be computed based solely on the genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants of the corresponding elliptic geometry. To set up our computation, we study the structure of the topological string free energy on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds both in the unrefined and the refined case, determining the maximal amount of the modular structure of the partition function that can be salvaged. In the case of fibrations exhibiting only isolated fibral curves, we show that the principal parts of the topological string partition function at gi…
Given a genus $2$ curve $C$ with a rational Weierstrass point defined over a number field, we construct a family of genus $5$ curves that realize descent by maximal unramified abelian two-covers of $C$, and describe explicit models of the isogeny classes of their Jacobians as restrictions of scalars of elliptic curves. All the constructions of this paper are accompanied by explicit formulas and implemented in Magma and/or SageMath. We apply these algorithms in combination with elliptic Chabauty to a dataset of 7692 genus $2$ quintic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ of Mordell-Weil rank $2$ or $3$ whos…
We discuss the computation of coefficients of the L-series associated to a hyperelliptic curve over Q of genus at most 3, using point counting, generic group algorithms, and p-adic methods.
Motivated by a demand for explicit genus 1 Belyi maps from theoretical physics, we give an efficient method of explicitly computing genus one Belyi maps by (1) composing covering maps from elliptic curves to the Riemann sphere with simpler (univariate) genus zero Belyi maps, as well as by (2) composing further with isogenies between elliptic curves. This gives many new explicit dessins on the doubly periodic plane, including several which have been realized in the physics literature as so-called brane-tilings in the context of quiver gauge theories.
We construct nontrivial L-equivalence between curves of genus one and degree five, and between elliptic surfaces of multisection index five. These results give the first examples of L-equivalence for curves (necessarily over non-algebraically closed fields) and provide a new bit of evidence for the conjectural relationship between L-equivalence and derived equivalence. The proof of the L-equivalence for curves is based on Kuznetsov's Homological Projective Duality for Gr(2,5), and L-equivalence is extended from genus one curves to elliptic surfaces using the Ogg--Shafarevich theory of twisting…
We compute the integral Chow ring of the stack of smooth, non-hyperelliptic curves of genus three. We obtain this result by computing the integral Chow ring of the stack of smooth plane quartics, by means of equivariant intersection theory.
We compute the rational Chow class of the locus of genus 2 curves admitting a d-to-1 map to a genus 1 curve, recovering a result of Faber-Pagani when d=2. The answer exhibits quasi-modularity properties similar to those in the Gromov-Witten theory of a fixed genus 1 curve. Along the way, we give a classification of Harris-Mumford admissible covers of a genus 1 curve by a genus 2 curve, which may be of independent interest. As an application of the main calculation, we compute the number of d-elliptic curves in a very general family of genus 2 curves obtained by fixing five branch points of the…
We study the problem of lifting curves from finite fields to number fields in a genus and gonality preserving way. More precisely, we sketch how this can be done efficiently for curves of gonality at most four, with an in-depth treatment of curves of genus at most five over finite fields of odd characteristic, including an implementation in Magma. We then use such a lift as input to an algorithm due to the second author for computing zeta functions of curves over finite fields using $p$-adic cohomology.
We study the induced Ekedahl-Oort stratification on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_4$ of curves of genus $4$ in characteristic $3$. By constructing families of curves with given Ekedahl-Oort type and by computing the dimension of the intersection of the induced Ekedahl-Oort strata and the boundary divisor classes, we show that for certain induced Ekedahl-Oort strata in $\mathcal{M}_4$, they have the same codimension in $\mathcal{M}_4$ as the corresponding Ekedahl-Oort strata in moduli space $\mathcal{A}_4$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $4$.
We propose a new way to compute the genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for two families of non-toric non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds that admit simple flops: Reid's Pagodas, and Laufer's examples. We exploit the duality between M-theory on these threefolds, and IIA string theory with D6-branes and O6-planes. From this perspective, the GV invariants are detected as five-dimensional open string zero modes. We propose a definition for genus zero GV invariants for threefolds that do not admit small crepant resolutions. We find that in most cases, non-geometric T-brane data is required in order…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero containing a primitive fifth root of unity. Let $X/k$ be a smooth cubic threefold with an automorphism of order five, then we observe that over a finite extension of the field actually the dihedral group $D_5$ is a subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(X)$. We find that the intermediate Jacobian $J(X)$ of $X$ is isogenous to the product of an elliptic curve $E$ and the self-product of an abelian surface $B$ with real multiplication by $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$. We give explicit models of some algebraic curves related to the construction of $J(X)$ as a Prym variety. This…
We show that the complex hyperbolic metrics defined by Deligne-Mostow and Thurston on ${\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ are singular Kähler-Einstein metrics when ${\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ is embedded in the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen compactification $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. As a consequence, we obtain a formula computing the volumes of ${\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ with respect to these metrics using intersection of boundary divisors of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. In the case of rational weights, following an idea of Y. Kawamata, we show that these metrics actually represent the first Chern class of some lin…
The computation of the field of moduli of a closed Riemann surface seems to be a very difficult problem and even more difficult is to determine if the field of moduli is a field of definition. In this paper we consider the family of closed Riemann surfaces of genus five admitting a group of conformal automorphisms isomorphic to ${\mathbb Z}_{2}^{4}$. These surfaces are non-hyperelliptic ones and turn out to be the highest branched abelian covers of the orbifolds of genus zero and five cone points of order two. We compute the field of moduli of these surfaces and we prove that they are fields o…
The main goal of this article is to compute the class of the divisor of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_3$ obtained by taking the closure of the image of $Ω\mathcal{M}_3(6;-2)$ by the forgetful map. This is done using Porteous formula and the theory of test curves. For this purpose, we study the locus of meromorphic differentials of the second kind, computing the dimension of the map of these loci to $\mathcal{M}_g$ and solving some enumerative problems involving such differentials in low genus. A key tool of the proof is the compactification of strata recently introduced by Bainbridge-Chen-Gendron-Gr…
We present a probabilistic Las Vegas algorithm for computing the local zeta function of a genus-$g$ hyperelliptic curve defined over $\mathbb F_q$ with explicit real multiplication (RM) by an order $\Z[η]$ in a degree-$g$ totally real number field. It is based on the approaches by Schoof and Pila in a more favorable case where we can split the $\ell$-torsion into $g$ kernels of endomorphisms, as introduced by Gaudry, Kohel, and Smith in genus 2. To deal with these kernels in any genus, we adapt a technique that the author, Gaudry, and Spaenlehauer introduced to model the $\ell$-torsion by stru…
The Chow group of zero cycles in the moduli space of stable pointed curves of genus zero is isomorphic to the integer additive group. Let $M$ be monomial in this Chow group. If no two factors of $M$ fulfill a particular quadratic relation, then the monomial can be represented equivalently by a specific tree; otherwise, $M$ is mapped to zero under the stated isomorphism. Starting from this tree representation, we introduce a graphical algorithm for computing the corresponding integer for $M$ under the aforementioned isomorphism. The algorithm is linear with respect to the size of the tree.
The Chow ring of the moduli space of marked rational curves is generated by Keel's divisor classes. The top graded part of this Chow ring is isomorphic to the integers, generated by the class of a single point. In this paper, we give an algorithm for computing the intersection degree of tuples of Keel's divisor classes. This computation is a concrete but complicated algorithmic question in the field. Also, we give a simple complexity argument for the algorithm. Additionally, we introduce three identities on multinomial coefficients, as well as proofs for them.
