We present an algorithm solving the following problem: given two genus 2 curves over a field k with isogenous Jacobians, compute such an isogeny explicitly. This isogeny can be either an l-isogeny or, in the real multiplication case, an isogeny with cyclic kernel; we require that k have large enough characteristic and that the curves be sufficiently generic. Our algorithm uses modular equations for these isogeny types, and makes essential use of an explicit Kodaira--Spencer isomorphism in genus 2.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number and be an integer coprime to $p$. We survey an algorithm for computing explicit rational representations of $(\ell,...,\ell)$-isogenies between Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of arbitrary genus over an extension $K$ of the field of $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}\_p$. The algorithm has a quasi-linear complexity in $\ell$ as well as in the genus of the curves.
We present a quasi-linear algorithm to compute isogenies between Jacobians of curves of genus 2 and 3 starting from the equation of the curve and a maximal isotropic subgroup of the l-torsion, for l an odd prime number, generalizing the Vélu's formula of genus 1. This work is based from the paper "Computing functions on Jacobians and their quotients" of Jean-Marc Couveignes and Tony Ezome. We improve their genus 2 case algorithm, generalize it for genus 3 hyperelliptic curves and introduce a way to deal with the genus 3 non-hyperelliptic case, using algebraic theta functions.
For a nonsingular projective curve $C$ of genus 3 defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 2$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that the Jacobian variety $J(C)$ has a decomposed Richelot isogeny outgoing from it and we determine the structures of decomposed ones.
We give an algorithm to compute $(\ell,\ell,\ell)$-isogenies from the Jacobians of genus three hyperelliptic curves to the Jacobians of non-hyperelliptic curves. An important application is to reduce the discrete logarithm problem in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve to the corresponding problem in the Jacobian of a non-hyperelliptic curve.
In this paper we study genus 2 curves whose Jacobians admit a polarized (4,4)-isogeny to a product of elliptic curves. We consider base fields of characteristic different from 2 and 3, which we do not assume to be algebraically closed. We obtain a full classification of all principally polarized abelian surfaces that can arise from gluing two elliptic curves along their 4-torsion and we derive the relation their absolute invariants satisfy. As an intermediate step, we give a general description of Richelot isogenies between Jacobians of genus 2 curves, where previously only Richelot isogenies …
Let p be an odd prime number and g $\ge$ 2 be an integer. We present an algorithm for computing explicit rational representations of isogenies between Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus g over an extension K of the field of p-adic numbers Qp. It relies on an efficient resolution, with a logarithmic loss of p-adic precision, of a first order system of differential equations.
Castryck, Decru, and Smith used superspecial genus-2 curves and their Richelot isogeny graph for basing genus-2 isogeny cryptography, and recently, Costello and Smith devised an improved isogeny path-finding algorithm in the genus-2 setting. In order to establish a firm ground for the cryptographic construction and analysis, we give a new characterization of {\em decomposed Richelot isogenies} in terms of {\em involutive reduced automorphisms} of genus-2 curves over a finite field, and explicitly count such decomposed (and non-decomposed) Richelot isogenies between {\em superspecial} principal…
Let $n$ be an integer such that the modular curve $X_0(n)$ is hyperelliptic of genus $\ge2$ and such that the Jacobian of $X_0(n)$ has rank $0$ over $\mathbb Q$. We determine all points of $X_0(n)$ defined over quadratic fields, and we give a moduli interpretation of these points. As a consequence, we show that up to $\overline{\mathbb Q}$-isomorphism, all but finitely many elliptic curves with $n$-isogenies over quadratic fields are in fact $\mathbb Q$-curves, and we list all exceptions. We also show that, again with finitely many exceptions up to $\overline{\mathbb Q}$-isomorphism, every $\m…
We construct a three-parameter family of non-hyperelliptic and bielliptic plane genus-three curves whose associated Prym variety is two-isogenous to the Jacobian variety of a general hyperelliptic genus-two curve. Our construction is based on the existence of special elliptic fibrations with the section on the associated Kummer surfaces that provide a simple geometric interpretation for the rational double cover induced by the two-isogeny between the abelian surfaces.
Let E and E' be two elliptic curves over a number field. We prove that the reductions of E and E' at a finite place p are geometrically isogenous for infinitely many p, and draw consequences for the existence of supersingular primes. This result is an analogue for distributions of Frobenius traces of known results on the density of Noether-Lefschetz loci in Hodge theory. The proof relies on dynamical properties of the Hecke correspondences on the modular curve.
Computation of Gauss's arithmetic-geometric mean involves iteration of a simple step, whose algebro-geometric interpretation is the construction of an elliptic curve isogenous to a given one, specifically one whose period is double the original period. A higher genus analogue should involve the explicit construction of a curve whose jacobian is isogenous to the jacobian of a given curve. The doubling of the period matrix means that the kernel of the isogeny should be a lagrangian subgroup of the group of points of order 2 in the jacobian. In genus 2 such a construction was given classically by…
We construct geometric isogenies between three types of two-parameter families of K3 surfaces of Picard rank 18. One is the family of Kummer surfaces associated with Jacobians of genus-two curves admitting an elliptic involution, another is the family of Kummer surfaces associated with the product of two non-isogeneous elliptic curves, and the third is the twisted Legendre pencil. The isogenies imply the existence of algebraic correspondences between these K3 surfaces and prove that the associated four-dimensional Galois representations are isomorphic. We also apply our result to several subfa…
We present an oblivious transfer scheme that extends the proposal made by Barreto, Oliveira and Benits, based in isogenies supersingular elliptic curves, to the setting of principally polarized supersingular abelian surfaces.
We investigate stable operations in supersingular elliptic cohomology using isogenies of supersingular elliptic curves over finite fields. Our main results provide a framework in which we give a conceptually simple proof of an elliptic cohomology version of the Morava change of rings theorem and also gives models for explicit stable operations in terms of isogenies and morphisms in certain enlarged isogeny categories. We relate our work to that of G. Robert on the Hecke algebra structure of the ring of supersingular modular forms.
Motivated by a demand for explicit genus 1 Belyi maps from theoretical physics, we give an efficient method of explicitly computing genus one Belyi maps by (1) composing covering maps from elliptic curves to the Riemann sphere with simpler (univariate) genus zero Belyi maps, as well as by (2) composing further with isogenies between elliptic curves. This gives many new explicit dessins on the doubly periodic plane, including several which have been realized in the physics literature as so-called brane-tilings in the context of quiver gauge theories.
We present a new probabilistic algorithm to compute modular polynomials modulo a prime. Modular polynomials parameterize pairs of isogenous elliptic curves and are useful in many aspects of computational number theory and cryptography. Our algorithm has the distinguishing feature that it does not involve the computation of Fourier coefficients of modular forms. We avoid computing the exponentially large integral coefficients by working directly modulo a prime and computing isogenies between elliptic curves via Velu's formulas.
Let $p$ be an unramified prime in a totally real field $L$ such that $h^+(L)=1$. Our main result shows that Hilbert modular newforms of parallel weight two for $Γ_0(p)$ can be constructed naturally, via classical theta series, from modules of isogenies of superspecial abelian varieties with real multiplication on a Hilbert moduli space. This can be viewed as a geometric reinterpretation of the Eichler Basis Problem for Hilbert modular forms.
We study vector-valued Siegel modular forms of genus 2 and level 2. We describe the structure of certain modules of vector-valued modular forms over rings of scalar-valued modular forms.
We prove a genus formula for modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves. We use this formula to show that the reductions of modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves attain the Drinfeld-Vladut bound as the degree of the discriminant of $D$ tends to infinity.
We prove multiplicity one for vector valued holomorphic Siegel modular forms of weights greater or equal to 3 and the full Siegel modular group and give a trace formula for the action of the Hecke operators T(p) in the regular cases.
We prove that there exist exactly eight Siegel modular forms with respect to the congruence subgroups of Hecke type of the paramodular groups of genus two vanishing precisely along the diagonal of the Siegel upper half-plane. This is a solution of a question formulated during the conference "Black holes, Black Rings and Modular Forms" (ENS, Paris, August 2007). These modular forms generalize the classical Igusa form and the forms constructed by Gritsenko and Nikulin in 1998.
In this paper, we introduce modular polynomials for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(M)$ when $ X_0(M) $ has genus zero and therefore the polynomials are defined by a Hauptmodul of $ X_0(M) $. We show that the intersection number of two curves defined by two modular polynomials can be expressed as the sum of the numbers of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of positive definite binary quadratic forms over $\mathbb{Z}$. We also show that the intersection numbers can be also combinatorially written by Fourier coefficients of the Siegel Eisenstein series of degree 2, weight 2 with respec…
This article lays the foundations for the study of modular forms transforming with respect to representations of Fuchsian groups of genus zero. More precisely, we define geometrically weighted graded modules of such modular forms, where the graded structure comes from twisting with all isomorphism classes of line bundles on the corresponding compactified modular curve, and we study their structure by relating it to the structure of vector bundles over orbifold curves of genus zero. We prove that these modules are free whenever the Fuchsian group has at most two elliptic points. For three or mo…
A Howe curve is a curve of genus $4$ obtained as the fiber product of two genus-$1$ double covers of $\mathbf{P}^1$. In this paper, we present a simple algorithm for testing isomorphism of Howe curves, and we propose two main algorithms for finding and enumerating these curves: One involves solving multivariate systems coming from Cartier--Manin matrices, while the other uses Richelot isogenies of curves of genus $2$. Comparing the two algorithms by implementation and by complexity analyses, we conclude that the latter enumerates curves more efficiently. Using these algorithms, we show that th…
We extend Igusa's description of the relation between invariants of binary sextics and Siegel modular forms of degree two to a relation between covariants and vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree two. We show how this relation can be used to effectively calculate the Fourier expansions of Siegel modular forms of degree two.
A curve X over the field Q of rational numbers is modular if it is dominated by X_1(N) for some N; if in addition the image of its jacobian in J_1(N) is contained in the new subvariety of J_1(N), then X is called a new modular curve. We prove that for each integer g at least 2, the set of new modular curves over Q of genus g is finite and computable. For the computability result, we prove an algorithmic version of the de Franchis-Severi Theorem. Similar finiteness results are proved for new modular curves of bounded gonality, for new modular curves whose jacobian is a quotient of the new part …
We study universal families of stable genus two curves with level structure. Among other things, it is shown that the (1,1) part is spanned by divisor classes, and that there are no cycles of type (2,2) in the third cohomology of the first direct image. Using this, we deduce the Hodge and Tate conjectures hold for these varieties.
In this article we introduce Hecke operators on the differential algebra of geometric quasi-modular forms. As an application for each natural number $d$ we construct a vector field in six dimensions which determines uniquely the polynomial relations between the Eisenstein series of weight 2,4 and 6 and their transformation under multiplication of the argument by $d$, and in particular, it determines uniquely the modular curve of degree $d$ isogenies between elliptic curves.
We prove that there is only a finite number of genus 2 curves C defined over Q such that there exists a nonconstant morphism pi:X_1(N) --->C defined over Q and the jacobian of C, J(C), is a Q-factor of the new part of the jacobian of X_1(N), J_1(N)^{new}. Moreover, we prove that there are only 149 genus two curves of this kind with the additional requeriment that their jacobians are Q-simple. We determine the corresponding newforms and present equations for all these curves.
We describe a method to determine all the isomorphism classes of principal polarizations of the modular abelian surfaces $A_f$ with quaternionic multiplication attached to a normalized newform $f$ without complex multiplication. We include an example of $A_f$ with quaternionic multiplication for which we find numerically a curve $C$ whose Jacobian is $A_f$ up to numerical approximation, and we prove that it has quaternionic multiplication and is isogenous to $A_f$.
In this paper we present an algorithm for computing Hecke eigensystems of Hilbert-Siegel cusp forms over real quadratic fields of narrow class number one. We give some illustrative examples using the quadratic field $\Q(\sqrt{5})$. In those examples, we identify Hilbert-Siegel eigenforms that are possible lifts from Hilbert eigenforms.
An invariant of a model of genus one curve is a polynomial in the coefficients of the model that is stable under certain linear transformations. The classical example of an invariant is the discriminant, which characterizes the singularity of models. The ring of invariants of genus one models over a field is generated by two elements. Fisher normalized these invariants for models of degree n=2,3,4 in such a way that these invariants are moreover defined over the integers. We provide an alternative way to express these normalized invariants using modular forms. This method relies on a direct co…
We show how one can use the representation theory of ternary quartics to construct all vector-valued Siegel modular forms and Teichmüller modular forms of degree 3. The relation between the order of vanishing of a concomitant on the locus of double conics and the order of vanishing of the corresponding modular form on the hyperelliptic locus plays an important role. We also determine the connection between Teichmüller cusp forms on \overline{M}_g and the middle cohomology of symplectic local systems on M_g. In genus 3, we make this explicit in a large number of cases.
We compute explicit rational models for some Hilbert modular surfaces corresponding to square discriminants, by connecting them to moduli spaces of elliptic K3 surfaces. Since they parametrize decomposable principally polarized abelian surfaces, they are also moduli spaces for genus-2 curves covering elliptic curves via a map of fixed degree. We thereby extend classical work of Jacobi, Hermite, Bolza etc., and more recent work of Kuhn, Frey, Kani, Shaska, Völklein, Magaard and others, producing explicit families of reducible Jacobians. In particular, we produce a birational model for the modul…
We develop an algorithm to compute Fourier expansions of vector valued modular for Weil representations. As an application, we compute explicit linear equivalences of special divisors on modular varieties of orthogonal type. We define three families of Hecke operators for Jacobi forms, and analyze the induced action on vector valued modular forms. The newspaces attached to one of these families are used to give a more memory efficient version of our algorithm.
Let $N\geq 1$ be a square-free integer such that the modular curve $X_0^*(N)$ has genus $\geq 2$. We prove that $X_0^*(N)$ is bielliptic exactly for $19$ values of $N$, and we determine the automorphism group of these bielliptic curves. In particular, we obtain the first examples of nontrivial $Aut(X_0^*(N))$ when the genus of $X_0^*(N)$ is $\geq 3$. Moreover, we prove that the set of all quadratic points over $\mathbb{Q}$ for the modular curve $X_0^*(N)$ with genus $\geq 2$ and $N$ square-free is not finite exactly for $51$ values of $N$.
The object of this article is to construct certain classes of arithmetically significant, holomorphic Siegel cusp forms F of genus 2, which are neither of Saito-Kurokawa type, in which case the degree 4 spinor L-function L(s, F) is divisible by an abelian L-function, nor of Yoshida type, in which case L(s,F) is a product of L-series of a pair of elliptic cusp forms. Two key examples are the forms F defined by the symmetric cube of a non-CM elliptic curve E over the rationals, and those defined by anticyclotomic twists (of even non-zero weight) of the base change of such an E to an imaginary qu…
We describe how the quadratic Chabauty method may be applied to explicitly determine the set of rational points on modular curves of genus $g>1$ whose Jacobians have Mordell--Weil rank $g$. This extends our previous work on the split Cartan curve of level 13 and allows us to consider modular curves that may have few known rational points or nontrivial local height contributions at primes of bad reduction. We illustrate our algorithms with a number of examples where we determine the set of rational points on several modular curves of genus 2 and 3: this includes Atkin--Lehner quotients $X_0^+(N…
We study modular differential equations for the basic weak Jacobi forms in one abelian variable with applications to the elliptic genus of Calabi--Yau varieties. We show that the elliptic genus of any $CY_3$ satisfies a differential equation of degree one with respect to the heat operator. For a $K3$ surface or any $CY_5$ the degree of the differential equation is $3$. We prove that for a general $CY_4$ its elliptic genus satisfies a modular differential equation of degree $5$. We give examples of differential equations of degree two with respect to the heat operator similar to the Kaneko--Zag…
We study the cohomology of certain local systems on moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian surfaces with a level 2 structure. The trace of Frobenius on the alternating sum of the étale cohomology groups of these local systems can be calculated by counting the number of pointed curves of genus 2 with a prescribed number of Weierstrass points over the given finite field. This cohomology is intimately related to vector-valued Siegel modular forms. The corresponding scheme in level 1 was carried out in [FvdG]. Here we extend this to level 2 where new phenomena appear. We determine the cont…
We study over rings of scalar valued Siegel modular forms. modules of vector valued modular forms of degree two. For the two simplest representations, standard and Sym^2, appears rather natural consider the cases of the group $Γ[4,8] $ and $Γ[2,4].$ In these case we give the complete structure of the modules . The main tools are Theta functions and their derivatives evaluated at $z=0$
We consider the moduli space $A_{pol}(n)$ of (non-principally) polarised abelian varieties of genus $g\geq3$ with coprime polarisation and full level-$n$ structure. Based upon the analysis of the Tits building in math/0405321, we give an explicit lower bound on $n$ that is sufficient for the compactified moduli space to be of general type if one further explicit condition is satisfied.
In this article combining survey and certain research results, we introduce a categorical framework for description of symmetries of genus zero modular operad. This description merges the techniques of recent "persistence homology" studies and the classical formalism of groupoids. We show that the contravariant "poset in groupoids" embodying these symmetries, provides a new avatar of profinite Grothendieck-Teichmüller group acting upon this operad but seemingly not related with representations of the Galois group of all algebraic numbers.
In the paper we study two types of relations: a one is between the elliptic genus of Calabi-Yau manifolds and Jacobi modular forms, another one is between the second quantized elliptic genus, Siegel modular forms and Lorentzian Kac-Moody Lie algebras. We also determine the structure of the graded ring of the weak Jacobi forms with integral Fourier coefficients. It gives us a number of applications to the theory of elliptic genus and of the second quantized elliptic genus.
Let $\mathfrak p$ be any point in the moduli space of genus-two curves $\mathcal M_2$ and $K$ its field of moduli. We provide a universal equation of a genus-two curve $\mathcal C_{α, β}$ defined over $K(α, β)$, corresponding to $\mathfrak p$, where $α$ and $β$ satisfy a quadratic $α^2+ b β^2= c$ such that $b$ and $c$ are given in terms of ratios of Siegel modular forms. The curve $\mathcal C_{α, β}$ is defined over the field of moduli $K$ if and only if the quadratic has a $K$-rational point $(α, β)$. We discover some interesting symmetries of the Weierstrass equation of $\mathcal C_{α, β}$. …
We prove the modularity for an algebraic space curve $Y$ of genus $50$ in $\mathbb{P}^5$, which consists of $21$ quartic polynomials in six variables, by means of an explicit modular parametrization by theta constants of order $13$. This provides an example of modularity, explicit uniformization and hyperbolic uniformization of arithmetic type for a higher genus algebraic space curve. In particular, it gives a new example for Hilbert's 22nd problem. This gives $21$ modular equations of order $13$, which greatly improve the result of Ramanujan and Evans on the construction of modular equations …
The level moduli space $A_g^{4,8}$ is mapped to the projective space by means of gradients of odd Theta functions, such a map turning out no to be injective in the genus 2 case. In this work a congruence subgroup $Γ$ is located between $Γ_2(4,8)$ and $Γ_2(2,4)$ in such a way the map factors on the related level moduli space $A_Γ$, the new map being injective on $A_Γ$. Satake's compactification $\text{Proj}A(Γ)$ and the desingularization $\text{Proj}S(Γ)$ are also due to be investigated, since the map does not extend to the boundary of the compactification; to aim at this, an algebraic descript…
