In this paper we construct an abelian fibration over ${\bf P}^3$ on the Hilbert cube of the primitive K3 surface of genus 9. After the abelian fibration constructed by Mukai on the Hilbert square on the primitive K3 surface S of genus 5, this is the second example where the abelian fibration on such Hilb_n(S) is directly constructed. Our example is also the first known abelian fibration on a Hilbert scheme Hilb_n(S) of a primitive K3 surface S which is not the Hilbert square of S; the primitive K3 surfaces on the Hilbert square of which such a fibration exists are known by a recent result of Hassett and Tschinkel.
In this paper, we investigate the moduli of surfaces of general type admitting genus 2 fibrations with irregularity q = g_b + 1, where g_b >= 2 is the genus of the base. We prove that smooth fibrations are parametrized by a unique component in the moduli space. The same result applies to nonsmooth fibrations with special values of g_b. In the general case, we give a bound on the dimension of the corresponding connected components.
A Kodaira fibration is a non-isotrivial fibration $f\colon S\rightarrow B$ from a smooth algebraic surface $S$ to a smooth algebraic curve $B$ such that all fibers are smooth algebraic curves of genus $g$. Such fibrations arise as complete curves inside the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of genus $g$ algebraic curves. We investigate here the possible connected monodromy groups of a Kodaira fibration in the case $g=3$ and classify which such groups can arise from a Kodaira fibration obtained as a general complete intersection curve inside a subvariety of $\mathcal{M}_3$ parametrizing curves whose…
In this paper we look for necessary and sufficient conditions for a genus one fibration to have rational curves. We show that a projective variety with log terminal singularities that admits a relatively minimal genus one fibration $X\rightarrow B$ does contain vertical rational curves if and only if it not isomorphic to a finite étale quotient of a product $\tilde{B}\times E$ over $B$. Many sufficient conditions for the existence of rational curves in a variety that admits a genus one fibration are proved in this paper.
We consider fibrations of genus 2 over complex surfaces. The purpose of this paper is primarily to provide a geometric description of the possible structures of the fibration on a neighborhood of a singular fiber. In particular it is shown that the "geometric data" of the singular fiber determines the fibration on its neighborhood up to a transversely holomorphic $C^{\infty}$-diffeomorphism. The method employed is quite flexible and it applies to good extent to fibrations of arbitrary genus.
Let f : S --> B be a non-trivial family of semi-stable curves of genus g, N the number of critical points of f and s the number of singular fibres. We prove the inequality N < (4g+2)(s+2g(B)-2) .
In this paper, we study algebraic surfaces of general type with $p_g=q=1$ and genus 2 Albanese fibrations. We first study the examples of surfaces with $p_g=q=1, K^2=5$ and genus 2 Albanese fibrations constructed by Catanese using singular bidouble covers of $\mathbb{P}^2$. We prove that these surfaces give an irreducible and connected component of $\mathcal{M}_{1,1}^{5,2}$, the Gieseker moduli space of surfaces of general type with $p_g=q=1, K^2=5$ and genus 2 Albanese fibrations. Then by constructing surfaces with $p_g=q=1,K^2=3$ and a genus 2 Albanese fibration such that the number of the s…
We will prove that given a genus-2 fibration $f: X \rightarrow C$ on a smooth projective surface $X$ such that $b_1(X)=b_1(C)+2$, the fundamental group of $X$ is almost isomorphic to $π_1(C) \times π_1(E)$, where $E$ is an elliptic curve. We will also verify the Shafarevich Conjecture on holomorphic convexity of the universal cover of surfaces $X$ with genus-2 fibration $X\rightarrow C$ such that $b_1(X)>b_1(C)$.
We study relative Fourier-Mukai transforms on genus one fibrations with section, allowing explicitly the total space of the fibration to be singular and non-projective. Grothendieck duality is used to prove a skew-commutativity relation between this equivalence of categories and certain duality functors. We use our results to explicitly construct examples of semi-stable sheaves on degenerating families of elliptic curves.
The supersingular K3 surface X in characteristic 2 with Artin invariant 1 admits several genus 1 fibrations (elliptic and quasi-elliptic). We use a bijection between fibrations and definite even lattices of rank 20 and discriminant 4 to classify the fibrations, and exhibit isomorphisms between the resulting models of X. We also study a configuration of (-2)-curves on X related to the incidence graph of points and lines of IP^2(IF_4).
In this paper we complete the classification of the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which admit a non-symplectic involution acting trivially on the Néron--Severi group. We use the geometric method introduced by Oguiso and moreover we provide a geometric construction of the fibrations classified. If the non-symplectic involution fixes at least one curve of genus 1, we relate all the elliptic fibrations on the K3 surface with either elliptic fibrations or generalized conic bundles on rational elliptic surfaces. This description allows us to write the Weierstrass equations of the elliptic fibr…
Looking in positive characteristic for failures of the Bertini-Sard theorem, we determine, up to birational equivalence, the separable proper morphisms of smooth algebraic varieties in characteristic two, whose fibres are non-smooth curves of arithmetic genus two.
This is the part II of the series under the same title. In part I, using the approach developed by Catanese--Pignatelli arXiv:math/0503294, we gave a structure theorem for hyperelliptic genus 3 fibrations all of whose fibers are 2-connected (arXiv:1209.6278 [math.AG]). In this part II, we shall give a structure theorem for smooth deformation families of these to non-hyperelliptic genus 3 fibrations. As an application, we shall give a set of sufficient conditions for our genus 3 hyperelliptic fibration above to allow deformation to non-hyperelliptic fibrations, and use this to study certain min…
In this paper, we study the Gieseker moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{1,1}^{4,3}$ of minimal surfaces with $p_g=q=1, K^2=4$ and genus 3 Albanese fibration. Under the assumption that direct image of the canonical sheaf under the Albanese map is decomposable, we find two irreducible components of $\mathcal{M}_{1,1}^{4,3}$, one of dimension 5 and the other of dimension 4.
K. Konno proved a slope equality for fibred surfaces with fibres of odd genus and general fibre of maximal gonality. More precisely he found a relation between the invariants of the fibration and certain weights of special fibres (called the Horikawa numbers). We give an alternative and more geometric proof in the case of a genus 5 fibration, under generality assumptions. In our setting we are able to prove that the fibre with positive Horikawa numbers are precisely the trigonal ones, we compute their weights explicitly and thus we exhibit explicit examples of regular surfaces with assigned in…
In the present paper we consider fibrations $f: S \ra B$ of an algebraic surface onto a curve $B$, with general fibre a curve of genus $g$. Our main results are: 1) A structure theorem for such fibrations in the case $g=2$ 2) A structure theorem for such fibrations in the case $g=3$ and general fibre nonhyperelliptic 3) A theorem giving a complete description of the moduli space of minimal surfaces of general type with $ K^2_S = 3, p_g = q=1$, showing in particular that it has four unirational connected components 4) some other applications of the two structure theorems.
We shall study the structure of hyperelliptic fibrations of genus 3, from the view point given by Catanese and Pignatelli in arXiv:math/0503294. In this part I, we shall give a structure theorem for such fibrations for the case of f : S \to B with all fibers 2-connected. We shall also give, for the case of B projective line, sufficient conditions for the existence of such fibrations from the view point of our structure theorem, prove the uniqueness of the deformation type and the simply connectedness of S for some cases, and give some examples including those with minimal regular S with geomet…
In this paper, we study the structure, deformations and the moduli spaces of complex projective surfaces admitting genus two fibrations over elliptic curves. We observe that, a surface admitting a smooth fibration as above is elliptic and we employ results on the moduli of polarized elliptic surfaces, to construct moduli spaces of these smooth fibrations. In the case of nonsmooth fibrations, we relate the moduli spaces to the Hurwitz schemes ${\cal H}(1,X(d),n)$ of morphisms of degree $n$ from elliptic curves to the modular curve $X(d)$, $d\geq 3$. Ultimately, we show that the moduli spaces in…
Polarized rational surfaces $(X, \mathcal L)$ of sectional genus two ruled in conics are studied. When they are not minimal, they are described as the blow-up of $\mathbb F_1$ at some points lying on distinct fibers. Ampleness and very ampleness of $\mathcal L$ are studied in terms of their location. When $\mathcal L$ is very ample and there is a line contained in $X$ and transverse to the fibers, the conic fibrations $(X, \mathcal L)$ are classified and a related property concerned with the inflectional locus is discussed.
We construct noncomplex smooth 4-manifolds which admit genus-2 Lefschetz fibrations over S^2. The fibrations are necessarily hyperelliptic, and the resulting 4-manifolds are not even homotopy equivalent to complex surfaces. Furthermore, these examples show that fiber sums of holomorphic Lefschetz fibrations do not necessarily admit complex structures.
For a complex surface of general type with a relatively minimal genus 2 fibration, the bounds of the orders of the automorphism group of the fibration, of its abelian subgroups and of its cyclic subgroups are determined as linear functions of $c^2_1$. Most of them are the best.
In this paper we study minimal algebraic surfaces with $p_g=q=1,K^2=4$ and nonhyperelliptic Albanese fibrations of genus 4. We construct for the first time a family of such surfaces as complete intersections of type $(2,3)$ in a $\mathbb{P}^3$-bundle over an elliptic curve. For the surfaces we construct here, the direct image of the canonical sheaf under the Albanese map is decomposable (which is a topological invariant property). Moreover we prove that, all minimal surfaces with $p_g=q=1,K^2=4$ and nonhyperelliptic Albanese fibrations of genus 4 such that the direct image of the canonical she…
We consider a rational surface with a relatively minimal fibration. Picard number of a such fibred surface is bounded in terms of the genus of a general fibre. When Picard number is the maximum for any given genus, we characterize a such fibred surface whose Mordell-Weil group is trivial by singular fibres. Furthermore, we describe the defining equation explicitly.
The Horikawa index and the local signature are introduced for relatively minimal fibered surfaces whose general fiber is a non-hyperelliptic curve of genus $4$ with unique trigonal structure.
Given a relatively minimal fibration $f: S \to \Bbb P^1$ on a rational surface $S$ with general fiber $C$ of genus $g$, we investigate under what conditions the inequality $6(g-1)\le K_f^2$ occurs, where $K_f$ is the canonical relative sheaf of $f$. We give sufficient conditions for having such inequality, depending on the genus and gonality of $C$ and the number of certain exceptional curves on $S$. We illustrate how these results can be used for constructing fibrations with the desired property. For fibrations of genus $11\le g\le 49$ we prove the inequality: $$ 6(g-1) +4 -4\sqrt g \le K_f^2…
We study K3 surfaces over a number field $k$ which are double covers of extremal rational elliptic surfaces. We provide a list of all elliptic fibrations on certain K3 surfaces together with the degree of a field extension over which each genus one fibration is defined and admits a section. We show that the latter depends, in general, on the action of the cover involution on the fibers of the genus 1 fibration.
We systematically analyze the fibration structure of toric hypersurface Calabi-Yau threefolds with large and small Hodge numbers. We show that there are only four such Calabi-Yau threefolds with $h^{1, 1} \geq 140$ or $h^{2, 1} \geq 140$ that do not have manifest elliptic or genus one fibers arising from a fibration of the associated 4D polytope. There is a genus one fibration whenever either Hodge number is 150 or greater, and an elliptic fibration when either Hodge number is 228 or greater. We find that for small $h^{1, 1}$ the fraction of polytopes in the KS database that do not have a genu…
The sum of Lyapunov exponents $L_f$ of a semi-stable fibration is the ratio of the degree of the Hodge bundle by the Euler characteristic of the base. This ratio is bounded from above by the Arakelov inequality. Sheng-Li Tan showed that for fiber genus $g\geq 2$ the Arakelov equality is never attained. We investigate whether there are sequences of fibrations approaching asymptotically the Arakelov bound. The answer turns out to be no, if the fibration is smooth, or non-hyperelliptic, or has a small base genus. Moreover, we construct examples of semi-stable fibrations showing that Teichmüller c…
We consider K3 surfaces which are double cover of rational elliptic surfaces. The former are endowed with a natural elliptic fibration, which is induced by the latter. There are also other elliptic fibrations on such K3 surfaces, which are necessarily induced by special linear systems on the rational elliptic surfaces. We describe these linear systems. In particular, we observe that every conic bundle on the rational surface induces a genus 1 fibration on the K3 surface and we classify the singular fibers of the genus 1 fibration on the K3 surface it terms of singular fibers and special curves…
We give an algorithm to classify singular fibers of finite cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface by using singularity diagrams. As the first application, we classify all fibers of 3-cyclic covering fibrations of genus 4 of a ruled surface and show that the signature of a complex surface with this fibration is non-positive by computing the local signature for any fiber. As the second application, we classify all fibers of hyperelliptic fibrations of genus 3 into 12 types according to the Horikawa index. We also prove that finite cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface have no mult…
We investigate the relation between the ordinarity of a surface and of its Picard scheme in connection with the problem of lifting fibrations of genus g > 1 on surfaces to characteristic zero.
We argue that M-theory compactified on an arbitrary genus-one fibration, that is, an elliptic fibration which need not have a section, always has an F-theory limit when the area of the genus-one fiber approaches zero. Such genus-one fibrations can be easily constructed as toric hypersurfaces, and various $SU(5)\times U(1)^n$ and $E_6$ models are presented as examples. To each genus-one fibration one can associate a $τ$-function on the base as well as an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ representation which together define the IIB axio-dilaton and 7-brane content of the theory. The set of genus-one fibration…
The aim of this paper is to study further the universal toric genus of compact homogeneous spaces and their homogeneous fibrations. We consider the homogeneous spaces with positive Euler characteristic. It is well known that such spaces carry many stable complex structures equivariant under the canonical action of the maximal torus $T^k$. As the torus action in this case has only isolated fixed points it is possible to effectively apply localization formula for the universal toric genus. Using this we prove that the famous topological results related to rigidity and multiplicativity of a Hirze…
Kodaira's classification of singular fibers in elliptic fibrations and its translation into the language of monodromies and Lefschetz fibrations has been a boon to the study of 4-manifolds. In this article, we begin the work of translating between singular fibers of genus 2 families of algebraic curves and the positive Dehn twist factorizations of Lefschetz fibrations for a certain subset of the singularities described by Namikawa and Ueno in the 70s. We look at four families of hypersurface singularities in $\mathbb{C}^3$. Each hypersurface comes equipped with a fibration by genus 2 algebraic…
We introduce the $2$-nodal spherical deformation of certain singular fibers of genus $2$ fibrations, and use such deformations to construct various examples of simply connected minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds with small topology. More specifically, we construct new exotic minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to ${\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#6({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$, ${\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#7({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$, and $3{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#k({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$ for $k=16, 17, 18, 19$ using combinations of such deformations, symplectic blowups, and (…
For a relatively minimal surface fibration $f: X\to C$, the equivariant automorphism group of $f$ is, roughly speaking, the group of automorphisms of $X$ preserving the fibration structure. We present a classification of such fibrations of fibre genus $g\ge 1$ with smooth generic fibre over an arbitrary algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$ whose equivariant automorphism group is infinite.
Let f: X->B be a fibred surface of genus g whose general fibre is a double cover of a smooth curve of genus gamma. We show that, for g > 4gamma+1, the number 4(g-1)/(g-gamma) is a sharp lower bound for the slope of f, proving a conjecture of Barja. Moreover, we give a characterisation of the fibred surfaces that reach the bound. In the case g = 4gamma+1 we obtain the same sharp bound under the assumption that the involutions on the general fibres glue to a global involution on X.
A projective symplectic variety $\mathcal{P}$ of dimension 6, with only finite quotient singularities, $π(\mathcal{P})=0$ and $h^{(2,0)}(\mathcal{P}_{smooth})=1$, is described as a relative compactified Prym variety of a family of genus 4 curves with involution. It is a Lagrangian fibration associated to a K3 surface double cover of a generic cubic surface. It has no symplectic desingularization.
We present a novel technique to obtain base independent expressions for the matter loci of fibrations of complete intersection Calabi-Yau onefolds in toric ambient spaces. These can be used to systematically construct elliptically and genus one fibered Calabi-Yau $d$-folds that lead to desired gauge groups and spectra in F-theory. The technique, which we refer to as GV-spectroscopy, is based on the calculation of fiber Gopakumar-Vafa invariants using the Batyrev-Borisov construction of mirror pairs and application of the so-called Frobenius method to the data of a parametrized auxiliary polyto…
We establish the slope equality and give an upper bound of the slope for finite cyclic covering fibrations of an elliptic surface including bielliptic fibrations of genus greater than 5. We also give an upper bound of the slope for triple cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface and hyperelliptic fibrations, which provides a new proof of Xiao's upper bound.
We consider relatively minimal fibrations of curves of genus two on rational surfaces whose Picard numbers are not maximal. By birational morphisms, such fibred surfaces are interpreted as pencils of plane curves. We show that only four are canonical, among a variety of possible models. For each canonical pencil, we give an example with trivial Mordell-Weil group.
Let $f:S \fr B$ be a surface fibration with fibres of genus 5. We find a linear relation between the fundamental invariants of the surface. Namely $K_f^2=χ_f+N$ where $N$ is the number of trigonal fibres. Our proof is based on the analysis of the relative canonical algebra $\cal{R}(f)$.
We describe explicit formulas relevant to the F-theory/heterotic string duality that reconstruct from a specific Jacobian elliptic fibration on the Shioda-Inose surface covering a generic Kummer surface the corresponding genus-two curve using the level-two Satake coordinate functions. We derive explicitly the rational map on the moduli space of genus-two curves realizing the algebraic correspondence between a sextic curve and its Satake sextic. We will prove that it is not the original sextic defining the genus-two curve, but its corresponding Satake sextic which is manifest in the F-theory mo…
We classify complex K3 surfaces of zero entropy admitting an elliptic fibration with only irreducible fibers. These surfaces are characterized by the fact that they admit a unique elliptic fibration with infinite automorphism group. We furnish an explicit list of 32 Néron-Severi lattices corresponding to such surfaces. Incidentally, we are able to decide which of these 32 classes of surfaces admit a unique genus 1 fibration. Finally, we prove that all K3 surfaces with Picard rank >=19 and infinite automorphism group have positive entropy.
We describe all the elliptic fibrations with section on the Kummer surface X of the Jacobian of a very general curve C of genus 2 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, modulo the automorphism group of X and the symmetric group on the Weierstrass points of C. In particular, we compute elliptic parameters and Weierstrass equations for the 25 different fibrations and analyze the reducible fibers and Mordell-Weil lattices. This answers completely a question posed by Kuwata and Shioda in 2008.
We give a complete description of all classical Enriques surfaces with non-zero global vector fields. In particular we show that there are such surfaces. The obtained result also applies to supersingular Enriques surfaces fulfilling a rather special condition. During this classification we study some properties of genus 1-fibrations special to characteristic as well as make a close study of the genus 1-fibration on the surfaces that we classify.
