Let $f: X \rightarrow C$ be a genus 1 fibration from a smooth projective surface, i.e. its generic fiber is a regular genus 1 curve. Let $j: J \rightarrow C$ be the Jacobian fibration of $f$. In this paper, we prove that the Chow motives of $X$ and $J$ are isomorphic. As an application, combined with our concomitant work on motives of quasi-elliptic fibrations, we prove Kimura finite-dimensionality for smooth projective surfaces not of general type with geometric genus 0. This generalizes Bloch-Kas-Lieberman's result to arbitrary characteristic.

In this article, we give an unconditional construction of a motivic analogue of the intermediate extension in the context of Chow motives of Abelian type. Our main application concerns intermediate extensions of Chow motives associated to Kuga families to the Baily--Borel compactification of a Shimura variety.
The purpose of this article is to provide a simplified construction of the intermediate extension of a Chow motive, provided a condition on absence of weights in the boundary is satisfied. We give a criterion, which guarantees the validity of the condition, and compare our new construction to the theory of the interior motive established earlier. We finish the article with a review of the known applications to the boundary of Shimura varieties.
The Grothendieck ring of Chow motives admits two natural opposite $λ$-ring structures, one of which is a special structure allowing the definition of Adams operations on the ring. In this work I present algorithms which allow an effective simplification of expressions that involve both $λ$-ring structures, as well as Adams operations. In particular, these algorithms allow the symbolic simplification of algebraic expressions in the sub-$λ$-ring of motives generated by a finite set of curves into polynomial expressions in a small set of motivic generators. As a consequence, the explicit computat…
Motivated by the study of rationally connected fibrations (and the MRC quotient) we study different notions of birationally simple fibrations. We say a fibration of smooth projective varieties is Chow constant if pushforward induces an isomorphism on the Chow group of 0-cycles. Likewise we say a fibration is cohomologically constant if pullback induces an isomorphism on holomorphic p-forms for all p. Our main result is the construction of maximal Chow constant and cohomologically constant fibrations. The paper is largely self contained and we prove a number of basic properties of these fibrati…
Guillet and Soulé have shown that, for a fibration $π: Y \to X$ with fibre $Z$, locally trivial in the Zariski topology, we have a decomposition \[ [Y] = [X] \cdot [Z], \] where $[\cdot]$ denotes a class in the Grothendieck group $K_{0}(\mathcal{M}_{Rat}(k))$ associated to the category of (pure effective) Chow motives $\mathcal{M}_{Rat}(k)$ for a field $k$. By assuming some additional properties for the fibre $Z$, we construct an explicit isomorphism $h(Y) \cong h(X) \otimes h(Z)$ in the category $\mathcal{M}_{Rat}(k)$, and we use it to prove, for this type of fibrations, some conjectures diss…
We prove that the Chow motive with integral coefficient of a geometrically rational surfaces~$S$ over a perfect field~$k$ is zero dimensional if and only if the Picard group of~$\bar{k}\times_{k}S$, where~$\bar{k}$ is an algebraic closure of~$k$, is a direct summand of a $\Gal (\bar{k}/k)$-permutation module, and~$S$ possesses a zero cycle of degree one. As shown by Colliot-Thélène in a letter to the author (which we have reproduced in the appendix) this is in turn equivalent to~$S$ having a zero cycle of degree~$1$ and $\CH_{0}(k(S)\times_{k}S)$ being torsion free.
Let X be a complex surface with no nontrivial 2-forms. Then we show that Bloch's conjecture is true (i.e. the Albanese map in this case is injective) if and only if any homologically trivial idempotent in the ring of correspondences vanishes. Furthermore the cube of the ideal of homologically trivial correspondences is zero if these equivalent conditions are satisfied (e.g. if X is not of general type).
Let $X$ be a hyperkähler variety admitting a Lagrangian fibration. Beauville's "splitting property" conjecture predicts that fibres of the Lagrangian fibration should have a particular behaviour in the Chow ring of $X$. We study this conjectural behaviour for two very classical examples of Lagrangian fibrations.
We prove that if a smooth projective algebraic variety of dimension less or equal to three has a unit type integral $K$-motive, then its integral Chow motive is of Lefschetz type. As a consequence, the integral Chow motive is of Lefschetz type for a smooth projective variety of dimension less or equal to three that admits a full exceptional collection.
The purpose of this note is to prove that the Chow motive of the Fano surface of lines on the smooth cubic threefold is finite-dimensional in the sense of Kimura. This gives an example of a smooth projective variety that is not dominated by a product of curves but whose Chow motive is of Abelian type.
In this note we relate the notions of Lefschetz type, decomposability, and isomorphism, on Chow motives with the notions of unit type, decomposability, and isomorphism, on noncommutative motives. Examples, counter-examples, and applications are also described.
The main goal of this paper is to define a certain Chow weight structure $w_{Chow}$ on the category $DM_c(S)$ of (constructible) $cdh$-motives over an equicharacteristic scheme $S$. In contrast to the previous papers of D. Hébert and the first author on weights for relative motives (with rational coefficients), we can achieve our goal for motives with integral coefficients (if $\operatorname{char}S=0$; if $\operatorname{char}S=p>0$ then we consider motives with $\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{p}]$-coefficients). We prove that the properties of the Chow weight structures that were previously established f…
A motive over a field $k$ is of abelian type if it belongs to the thick and rigid subcategory of Chow motives spanned by the motives of abelian varieties over $k$. This paper contains three sections of independent interest. First, we show that a motive which becomes of abelian type after a base field extension of algebraically closed fields is of abelian type. Given a field extension $K/k$ and a motive $M$ over $k$, we also show that $M$ is finite-dimensional if and only if $M_K$ is finite-dimensional. As a corollary, we obtain Chow--Kuenneth decompositions for varieties that become isomorphic…
Let $X$ be a complete intersection inside a variety $M$ with finite dimensional motive and for which the Lefschetz-type conjecture $B(M)$ holds. We show how conditions on the niveau filtration on the homology of $X$ influence directly the niveau on the level of Chow groups. This leads to a generalization of Voisin's result. The latter states that if $M$ has trivial Chow groups and if $X$ has non-trivial variable cohomology parametrized by $c$-dimensional algebraic cycles, then the cycle class maps $A_k(X) \to H_{2k}(X)$ are injective for $k<c$. We give variants involving group actions which le…
We prove formulas for the rational Chow motives of moduli spaces of semistable vector bundles and Higgs bundles of rank 3 and coprime degree on a smooth projective curve. Our approach involves identifying criteria to lift identities in (a completion of) the Grothendieck group of effective Chow motives to isomorphisms in the category of Chow motives. For the Higgs moduli space, we use motivic Bialynicki-Birula decompositions associated to a scaling action with variation of stability and wall-crossing for moduli spaces of rank 2 pairs, which occur in the fixed locus of this action.
We prove that the Chow motives of twisted derived equivalent K3 surfaces are isomorphic, not only as Chow motives (due to Huybrechts), but also as Frobenius algebra objects. Combined with a recent result of Huybrechts, we conclude that two complex projective K3 surfaces are isogenous (i.e. their second rational cohomology groups are Hodge isometric) if and only if their Chow motives are isomorphic as Frobenius algebra objects; this can be regarded as a motivic Torelli-type theorem. We ask whether, more generally, twisted derived equivalent hyper-Kaehler varieties have isomorphic Chow motives a…
We compute explicitly the Chow motive of any generalized Kummer variety associated to any abelian surface. In fact, it lies in the rigid tensor subcategory of the category of Chow motives generated by the Chow motive of the underlying abelian surface. One application of this calculation is to show that the Hodge conjecture holds for arbitrary products of generalized Kummer varieties. As another application, all numerically trivial 1-cycles on arbitrary products of generalized Kummer varieties are smash-nipotent.
Let $ϕ:X\rightarrow B$ be a Lagrangian fibration on a projective irreducible hyper-Kähler manifold of dimension $\leq8$. Let $M\in {\rm Pic}\,X$ be a line bundle whose restriction to the general fiber $X_b$ of $ϕ$ is topologically trivial. We prove that if the fibration has maximal variation or is isotrivial, the set of points $b$ such that the restriction $M_{\mid X_b}$ is torsion is dense in $B$. We give an application to the Chow ring of $X$. We prove a similar result for elliptic fibrations which gives a toy model for the argument.
For any smooth projective moduli space $M$ of Gieseker stable sheaves on a complex projective K3 surface (or an abelian surface) S, we prove that the Chow motive $\mathfrak{h}(M)$ becomes a direct summand of a motive $\bigoplus \mathfrak{h}(S^{k_i})(n_i)$ with $k_i\leq \dim(M)$. The result implies that finite dimensionality of $\mathfrak{h}(M)$ follows from finite dimensionality of $\mathfrak{h}(S)$. The technique also applies to moduli spaces of twisted sheaves and to moduli spaces of stable objects in ${\rm D}^{\rm b}(S,α)$ for a Brauer class $α\in{\rm Br}(S)$. In a similar vein, we investig…
The main goal of this paper is to define the so-called Chow weight structure for the category of Beilinson motives over any 'reasonable' base scheme $S$ (this is the version of Voevodsky's motives over $S$ defined by Cisinski and Deglise). We also study the functoriality properties of the Chow weight structure (they are very similar to the well-known functoriality of weights for mixed complexes of sheaves). As shown in a preceding paper, the Chow weight structure automatically yields an exact conservative weight complex functor (with values in $K^b(Chow(S))$). Here $Chow(S)$ is the heart of th…
The Hilbert scheme $X^{[3]}$ of length-$3$ subschemes of a smooth projective variety $X$ is known to be smooth and projective. We investigate whether the property of having a multiplicative Chow-Kuenneth decomposition is stable under taking the Hilbert cube. This is achieved by considering an explicit resolution of the map $X^3 \dashrightarrow X^{[3]}$. The case of the Hilbert square was taken care of in previous work of ours. The archetypical examples of varieties endowed with a multiplicative Chow-Kuenneth decomposition is given by abelian varieties. Recent work seems to suggest that hyperKa…
A remarkable result of Peter O'Sullivan asserts that the algebra epimorphism from the rational Chow ring of an abelian variety to its rational Chow ring modulo numerical equivalence admits a (canonical) section. Motivated by Beauville's splitting principle, we formulate a conjectural Section Property which predicts that for smooth projective holomorphic symplectic varieties there exists such a section of algebra whose image contains all the Chern classes of the variety. In this paper, we investigate this property for (not necessarily symplectic) varieties with Chow motive of abelian type. We i…
We revisit the classical two-dimensional McKay correspondence in two respects: The first one, which is the main point of this work, is that we take into account of the multiplicative structure given by the orbifold product; second, instead of using cohomology, we deal with the Chow motives. More precisely, we prove that for any smooth proper two-dimensional orbifold with projective coarse moduli space, there is an isomorphism of algebra objects, in the category of complex Chow motives, between the motive of the minimal resolution and the orbifold motive. In particular, the complex Chow ring (r…
This note is about the Chow groups of a certain family of smooth cubic fourfolds. This family is characterized by the property that each cubic fourfold $X$ in the family has an involution such that the induced involution on the Fano variety $F$ of lines in $X$ is symplectic and has a $K3$ surface $S$ in the fixed locus. The main result establishes a relation between $X$ and $S$ on the level of Chow motives. As a consequence, we can prove finite-dimensionality of the motive of certain members of the family.
We study Grothedieck groups of triangulated categories using weight structures, weight complexes, and the corresponding pure (co)homological functors. We prove some general statements on $K_0$ of weighted categories and apply it to Voevodsky motives endowed with so-called Chow weight structures. We obtain certain "motivic substitutes" for smooth compactifications of smooth varieties over arbitrary perfect fields; this enables us to make certain unramified cohomology and Euler characteristic calculations that are closely related to results of T. Ekedahl and B. Kahn.
