The category of strict omega-categories has an important full subcategory whose objects are the simple omega-categories freely generated by planar trees or by globular cardinals. We give a simple description of this subcategory in terms of chain complexes, and we give a similar description of the opposite category, the category of finite discs, in terms of cochain complexes. Berger has shown that the category of simple omega-categories has a filtration by iterated wreath products of the simplex category. We generalise his result by considering wreath products of categories of chain complexes over the simplex category.
There are several ways to construct omega-categories from combinatorial objects such as pasting schemes or parity complexes. We make these constructions into a functor on a category of chain complexes with additional structure, which we call augmented directed complexes. This functor from augmented directed complexes to omega-categories has a left adjoint, and the adjunction restricts to an equivalence on a category of augmented directed complexes with good bases. The omega-categories equivalent to augmented directed complexes with good bases include the omega-categories associated to globes, …
We show that the nerve of a strict omega-category can be described algebraically as a simplicial set with additional operations subject to certain identities. The resulting structures are called sets with complicial identities. We also construct an equivalence between the categories of strict omega-categories and of sets with complical identities.
It is known that strict omega-categories are equivalent through the nerve functor to complicial sets and to sets with complicial identities. It follows that complicial sets are equivalent to sets with complicial identities. We discuss these equivalences. In particular we give a conceptual proof that the nerves of omega-categories are complicial sets, and a direct proof that complicial sets are sets with complicial identities.
We study abelian group objects in $ω$-categories and discuss the well-known Dold-Kan correspondence from the perspective of $ω$-categories as a model for strict $\infty$-categories. The first part of the paper is intended to compile results from the existing literature and to fill some gaps therein. We go on to consider a parameterized Dold-Kan correspondence, i.e. a Dold-Kan correspondence for presheaves of $ω$-categories. The main result is to describe the descent or sheaf condition in terms of a glueing condition that is familiar for 1 and 2-stacks.
It is shown that the cubical nerve of a strict omega-category is a sequence of sets with cubical face operations and distinguished subclasses of thin elements satisfying certain thin filler conditions. It is also shown that a sequence of this type is the cubical nerve of a strict omega-category unique up to isomorphism; the cubical nerve functor is therefore an equivalence of categories. The sequences of sets involved are in effect the analogues of cubical T-complexes appropriate for strict omega-categories. Degeneracies are not required in the definition of these sequences, but can in fact be…
We develop a theory of weak omega categories that will be accessible to anyone who is familiar with the language of categories and functors and who has encountered the definition of a strict 2-category. The most remarkable feature of this theory is its simplicity. We build upon an idea due to Jacques Penon by defining a weak omega category to be a span of omega magmas with certain properties. (An omega magma is a reflexive, globular set with a system of partially defined, binary composition operations which respects the globular structure.) Categories, bicategories, strict omega categories and…
We establish a model structure on the category of strict omega-categories. The constructions leading to the model structure in question are expressed entirely within the scope of omega-categories, building on a set of generating cofibrations and a class of weak equivalences as basic items. All object are fibrant while cofibrant objects are exactly the free ones. Our model structure transfers to n-categories along right-adjoints, for each n, thus recovering the known cases n = 1 and n = 2.
We prove a theorem of Hinich type on existence of a model structure on a category related by an adjunction to the category of differential graded modules over a graded commutative ring.
We explain how any cofibrantly generated weak factorisation system on a category may be equipped with a universally and canonically determined choice of cofibrant replacement. We then apply this to the theory of weak omega-categories, showing that the universal and canonical cofibrant replacement of the operad for strict omega-categories is precisely Leinster's operad for weak omega-categories.
The relationships between thin elements, commutative shells and connections in cubical omega-categories are explored by a method which does not involve the use of pasting theory or nerves of omega-categories (both of which were previously needed for this purpose; see previous work by Al-Agl/Brown/Steiner. It is shown that composites of commutative shells are commutative and that thin structures are equivalent to appropriate sets of connections; this work extends to all dimensions the results proved in dimensions 2 and 3 by Brown/Mosa, and Brown/Kamps/Porter.
It is now very known how the subprojectivity of modules provides a fruitful new unified framework of the classical projectivity and flatness. In this paper, we extend this fact to the category of complexes by generalizing and unifying several known classical results. We further provide various examples to illustrate the scopes and limits of the established results. This paper is a continuation of a recent work in which it was shown among other several things that the subprojectivity of complexes can be characterized in terms of morphisms in the homotopy category.
We show that for any type in Martin-Löf Intensional Type Theory, the terms of that type and its higher identity types form a weak omega-category in the sense of Leinster. Precisely, we construct a contractible globular operad of definable composition laws, and give an action of this operad on the terms of any type and its identity types.
This paper continues the development of a simplicial theory of weak omega-categories, by studying categories which are enriched in weak complicial sets. These complicial Gray-categories generalise both the Kan complex enriched categories of homotopy theory and the Gray-categories of weak 3-category theory. We derive a simplicial nerve construction, which is closely related to Cordier and Porter's homotopy coherent nerve, and show that this faithfully represents complicial Gray-categories as weak complicial sets. The category of weak complicial sets may itself be canonically enriched to a compl…
We present a combinatorial analogue of the nerve theorem for covers of small categories, using the Grothendieck construction. We apply our result to prove the inclusion-exclusion principle for the Euler characteristic of a finite category.
This paper develops the foundations of a simplicial theory of weak omega-categories, which builds upon the insights originally expounded by Ross Street in his 1987 paper on oriented simplices. The resulting theory of weak complicial sets provides a common generalisation of the theories of (strict) omega-categories, Kan complexes and Joyal's quasi-categories. We generalise a number of results due to the current author with regard to complicial sets and strict omega-categories to provide an armoury of well behaved technical devices, such as joins and Gray tensor products, which will be used to s…
In this paper we show that both the homotopy category of strict $n$-categories, $1\leqslant n \leqslant \infty$, and the homotopy category of Steiner's augmented directed complexes are equivalent to the category of homotopy types. In order to do so, we first prove an abstract result, based on a strategy of Fritsch and Latch, giving sufficient conditions for a nerve functor with values in simplicial sets to induce an equivalence at the level of homotopy categories. We then apply this result to strict $n$-categories and augmented directed complexes, for which the hypothesis of our theorem were e…
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring with a semi-dualizing module $C$. The Auslander categories with respect to $C$ are related through Foxby equivalence: $\xymatrix@C=50pt{\mathcal {A}_C(R) \ar@<0.4ex>[r]^{C\otimes^{\mathbf{L}}_{R} -} & \mathcal {B}_C(R) \ar@<0.4ex>[l]^{\mathbf{R}\mathrm{Hom}_{R}(C, -)}}$. We firstly intend to extend the Foxby equivalence to Cartan-Eilenberg complexes. To this end, C-E Auslander categories, C-E $\mathcal{W}$ complexes and C-E $\mathcal{W}$-Gorenstein complexes are introduced, where $\mathcal{W}$ denotes a self-orthogonal class of $R$-modules. Moreover, cr…
We define a notion of cofibration among n-categories and show that the cofibrant objects are exactly the free ones, that is those generated by polygraphs.
We show the equivalence of two kinds of strict multiple category, namely the well known globular omega-categories, and the cubical omega-categories with connections.
Let $F:\mathcal{A}\to \mathcal{B}$ be a left adjoint between abelian categories and let $Ch(F)$ be the induced left adjoint on chain complexes. If the abelian categories $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are equipped with sufficiently nice cotorsion pairs, then we find model structures on their categories of chain complexes. This paper gives novel criteria under which the induced adjunction becomes a Quillen adjunction. In particular, our criteria can be checked on the level of the underlying abelian categories instead of chain complexes. We do the same for adjunctions of $n$ variables and we al…
The nerve of a strict omega-category is a simplicial set with additional structure, making it into a so-called complicial set, and strict omega-categories are in fact equivalent to complicial sets. The nerve functor is represented by a sequence of strict omega-categories, called orientals, which are associated to simplexes. In this paper we give a detailed algebraic description of the morphisms between orientals. The aim is to describe complicial sets algebraically, by operators and equational axioms.
We show that for the homotopy category K(Ab) of complexes of abelian groups, both Brown representability and Brown representability for the dual fail. We also provide an example of a localizing subcategory of K(Ab) for which the inclusion into K(Ab) does not have a right adjoint.
Recently, several authors have adopted new alternative approaches in the study of some classical notions of modules. Among them, we find the notion of subprojectivity which was introduced to measure in a way the degree of projectivity of modules. The study of subprojectivity has recently been extended to the context of abelian categories, which has brought to light some interesting new aspects. For instance, in the category of complexes, it gives a new way to measure, among other things, the exactness of complexes. In this paper, we prove that the subprojectivity notion provides a new sight of…
We compute the collection of CW-complexes in the model category of small categories constructed by Joyal and Tierney. More generally, if $X$ is a connected topological space, we show that the homotopy category of CW-complexes in Joyal-Tierney's model category of sheaves of sets on $X$ is equivalent to the homotopy category of groupoids. As an application of the ideas, we show that the algebraic $K$-theory groups of the category of pointed small categories are trivial, and more generally, the algebraic $K$-theory groups of any sufficiently "nice" Waldhausen category $\mathcal{A}$ of pointed sma…
We generalize a recent result by J.F. Carlson to finite tensor categories having finitely generated cohomology. Specifically, we show that if the Krull dimension of the cohomology ring is sufficiently large, then there exist infinitely many non-isomorphic and nontrivial bounded complexes of projective objects, and with small homology. We also prove a version for finite dimensional algebras with finitely generated cohomology.
We study the homotopy category $\mathsf{K}_{N}(\mathcal{B})$ of $N$-complexes of an additive category $\mathcal{B}$ and the derived category $\mathsf{D}_{N}(\mathcal{A})$ of an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$. First we show that both $\mathsf{K}_N(\mathcal{B})$ and $\mathsf{D}_N(\mathcal{A})$ have natural structures of triangulated categories. Then we establish a theory of projective (resp., injective) resolutions and derived functors. Finally, under some conditions of an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$, we show that $\mathsf{D}_{N}(\mathcal{A})$ is triangle equivalent to the ordinary derived ca…
We introduce a notion of total acyclicity associated to a subcategory of an abelian category and consider the Gorenstein objects they define. These Gorenstein objects form a Frobenius category, whose induced stable category is equivalent to the homotopy category of totally acyclic complexes. Applied to the flat-cotorsion theory over a coherent ring, this provides a new description of the category of cotorsion Gorenstein flat modules; one that puts it on equal footing with the category of Gorenstein projective modules.
We study the K_0 and K_1-groups of exact and triangulated categories of perfect complexes, and we apply the results to show how determinant functors on triangulated categories can be used for the construction of Euler characteristics in relative algebraic K_0-groups.
Our main result states that for each finite complex L the category ${\bf TOP}$ of topological spaces possesses a model category structure (in the sense of Quillen) whose weak equivalences are precisely maps which induce isomorphisms of all [L]-homotopy groups. The concept of [L]-homotopy has earlier been introduced by the first author and is based on Dranishnikov's notion of extension dimension. As a corollary we obtain an algebraic characterization of [L]-homotopy equivalences between [L]-complexes. This result extends two classical theorems of J. H. C. Whitehead. One of them -- describing ho…
The paper contains general results on the uniqueness of a DG enhancement for triangulated categories. As a consequence we obtain such uniqueness for the unbounded categories of quasi-coherent sheaves, for the triangulated categories of perfect complexes, and for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on quasi-projective schemes. If a scheme is projective then we also prove a strong uniqueness for the triangulated category of perfect complexes and for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. These results directly imply that fully faithful functors from the bounded derive…
We show that the homotopy category of complexes K(B) over any finitely accessible additive category B is locally well generated. That is, any localizing subcategory L in K(B) which is generated by a set is well generated in the sense of Neeman. We also show that K(B) itself being well generated is equivalent to B being pure semisimple, a concept which naturally generalizes right pure semisimplicity of a ring R for B = Mod-R.
We revisit Kapranov and Voevodsky's idea of spaces modelled on combinatorial pasting diagrams, now as a framework for higher-dimensional rewriting and the basis of a model of weak omega-categories. In the first part, we elaborate on Steiner's theory of directed complexes as a combinatorial foundation. We individuate convenient classes of directed complexes and develop the theory of diagrammatic sets relative to one such class. We study a notion of equivalence internal to a diagrammatic set, and single out as models of weak omega-categories those diagrammatic sets whose every composable diagram…
In this paper we study the homotopy limits of cosimplicial diagrams of dg-categories. We first give an explicit construction of the totalization of such a diagram and then show that the totalization agrees with the homotopy limit in the following two cases: (1) the complexes of sheaves of $\mathcal O$-modules on the Čech nerve of an open cover of a ringed space $(X, \mathcal O)$; (2) the complexes of sheaves on the simplicial nerve of a discrete group $G$ acting on a space. The explicit models we obtain in this way are twisted complexes as well as their $D$-module and $G$-equivariant versions.…
In this paper we develop the obstruction theory for lifting complexes, up to quasi-isomorphism, to derived categories of flat nilpotent deformations of abelian categories. As a particular case we also obtain the corresponding obstruction theory for lifting of objects in terms of Yoneda Ext-groups. In appendix we prove the existence of miniversal derived deformations of complexes.
We define a notion of weak omega-category internal to a model of Martin-Löf type theory, and prove that each type bears a canonical weak omega-category structure obtained from the tower of iterated identity types over that type. We show that the omega-categories arising in this way are in fact omega-groupoids.
We give a simple algebraic description of opetopes in terms of chain complexes, and we show how this description is related to combinatorial descriptions in terms of treelike structures. More generally, we show that the chain complexes associated to higher categories generate graphlike structures. The algebraic description gives a relationship between the opetopic approach and other approaches to higher category theory. It also gives an easy way to calculate the sources and targets of opetopes.
To characterize categorical constraints - associativity, commutativity and monoidality - in the context of quasimonoidal categories, from a cohomological point of view, we define the notion of a parity (quasi)complex. Applied to groups gives non-abelian cohomology. The categorification - functor from groups to monoidal categories - provides the correspondence between the respective parity (quasi)complexes and allows to interpret 1-cochains as functors, 2-cocycles - monoidal structures, 3-cocycles - associators. The cohomology spaces H3, H2, H1, H0 correspond as usual to quasi-extensions, exten…
We call product generator of an additive category a fixed object satisfying the property that every other object is a direct factor of a product of copies of it. In this paper we start with an additive category with products and images, e.g. a module category, and we are concerned with the homotopy category of complexes with entries in that additive category. We prove that Brown representability theorem is valid for the dual of the homotopy category if and only if the initial additive category has a product generator.
An adjoint pair of contravariant functors between abelian categories can be extended to the adjoint pair of their derived functors in the associated derived categories. We describe the reflexive complexes and interpret the achieved results in terms of objects of the initial abelian categories. In particular we prove that, for functors of any finite cohomological dimension, the objects of the initial abelian categories which are reflexive as stalk complexes form the largest class where a Cotilting Theorem in the sense of Colby and Fuller works.
This paper is a sequel to "T-structures and twisted complexes on derived injectives" by the same author with W. Lowen and M. Van den Bergh. We define a dg-category of unbounded twisted complexes on a dg-category, which is particularly interesting in the case of dg-categories of derived injectives or derived projectives associated to a t-structure. On such unbounded twisted complexes we define a natural "injective" and dually a "projective" t-structure. This is intended as a direct generalization of the homotopy categories of injective or projective objects of an abelian category.
We study the category of $\mathbb{Z}$-indexed sequences over an abelian category and certain generalized homology functors for this category of sequences which are indexed by positive integers $a$ and $b$. By looking at the corresponding derived category, we show that there is an "optimal" subcategory of sequences for every choice of our generalized homology functors, namely, the category of $N$-complexes (sequences for which the differential $d$ satisfies $d^N = 0$) where $N = a + b$. In this optimal case we show that our homology functors reduce to Kapranov's homology functors $\operatorname…
In the paper "Deformation theory of abelian categories", the last two authors proved that an abelian category with enough injectives can be reconstructed as the category of finitely presented modules over the category of its injective objects. We show a generalization of this to pretriangulated dg-categories with a left bounded non-degenerate t-structure with enough derived injectives, the latter being derived enhancements of the injective objects in the heart of the t-structure. Such dg-categories (with an additional hypothesis of closure under suitable products) can be completely described i…
Much of the homotopical and homological structure of the categories of chain complexes and topological spaces can be deduced from the existence and properties of the 'simple' functors Tot : {double chain complexes} -> {chain complexes} and geometric realization : {sSets} -> {Top}, or similarly, Tot : {simplicial chain complexes} -> {chain complexes} and | | : {sTop} -> {Top}. The purpose of this thesis is to abstract this situation, and to this end we introduce the notion of '(co)simplicial descent category'. It is inspired by Guillen-Navarros's '(cubical) descent categories'. The key ingredie…
We show that various derived categories of torsion modules and contramodules over the adic completion of a commutative ring by a weakly proregular ideal are full subcategories of the related derived categories of modules. By the work of Dwyer-Greenlees and Porta-Shaul-Yekutieli, this implies an equivalence between the (bounded or unbounded) conventional derived categories of the abelian categories of torsion modules and contramodules. Over the adic completion of a commutative ring by an arbitrary finitely generated ideal, we obtain an equivalence between the derived categories of complexes of …
Suppose given a Frobenius category E, i.e. an exact category with a big enough subcategory B of bijectives. Let_E_ := E/B denote its classical stable category. For example, we may take E to be the category of complexes C(A) with entries in an additive category A, in which case_E_ is the homotopy category of complexes K(A). Suppose given a finite poset D that satisfies the combinatorial condition of being ind-flat. Then, given a diagram of shape D with values in_E_ (i.e. commutative up to homotopy), there exists a diagram consisting of pure monomorphisms with values in E (i.e. commutative) that…
Let $R$ be a ring with identity. Inspired by recent work of Emmanouil, we show that the derived category of $R$ is equivalent to the chain homotopy category of all K-flat complexes with pure-injective components. This is implicitly related to a recollement we exhibit. It expresses $\mathcal{D}_{pur}(R)$, the pure derived category of $R$, as an attachment of the usual derived category $\mathcal{D}(R)$ with Emmanouil's quotient category $\mathcal{D}_{K-flat}(R):=K(R)/K-Flat$, which here we call the K-flat derived category. It follows that this Verdier quotient is a compactly generated triangulat…
Let E be a Frobenius category, let_E_ denote its stable category. The shift functor on_E_ induces a first shift functor on the category of acyclic complexes with entries in_E_ by pointwise application. Shifting a complex by 3 positions yields a second shift functor on this category. Passing to the quotient modulo split acyclic complexes, Heller remarked that these two shift functors become isomorphic, via an isomorphism satisfying still a further compatibility. Moreover, Heller remarked that a choice of such an isomorphism determines a triangulation on_E_, except for the octahedral axiom. We g…
In this paper we discuss different properties of noncommutative schemes over a field. We define a noncommutative scheme as a differential graded category of a special type. We study regularity, smoothness and properness for noncommutative schemes. Admissible subcategories of categories of perfect complexes on smooth projective schemes provide natural examples of smooth and proper noncommutative schemes that are called geometric noncommutative schemes. In this paper we show that the world of all geometric noncommutative schemes is closed under an operation of a gluing of differential graded cat…
We prove that the derived categories of abelian categories have unique enhancements -- all of them, the unbounded, bounded, bounded above and bounded below derived categories. The unseparated and left completed derived categories of a Grothendieck abelian category are also shown to have unique enhancements. Finally we show that the derived category of complexes with quasi-coherent cohomology and the category of perfect complexes have unique enhancements for quasi-compact and quasi-separated schemes.
We consider recollements of derived categories of dg-algebras induced by self orthogonal compact objects obtaining a generalization of Rickard's Theorem. Specializing to the case of partial tilting modules over a ring, we extend the results on triangle equivalences proved in [B2] and [BMT]. In the end we focus on the connection between recollements of derived categories of rings, bireflective subcategories and generalized universal localizations".
The theorem of the title is deduced from the equivalence between crossed complexes and cubical $ω$-groupoids with connections proved by the authors in 1981. In fact we prove the equivalence of five categories defined internally to an additive category with kernels.
