Let E be a Frobenius category, let_E_ denote its stable category. The shift functor on_E_ induces a first shift functor on the category of acyclic complexes with entries in_E_ by pointwise application. Shifting a complex by 3 positions yields a second shift functor on this category. Passing to the quotient modulo split acyclic complexes, Heller remarked that these two shift functors become isomorphic, via an isomorphism satisfying still a further compatibility. Moreover, Heller remarked that a choice of such an isomorphism determines a triangulation on_E_, except for the octahedral axiom. We generalize the notion of acyclic complexes such that the accordingly enlarged version of Heller's construction includes octahedra.
We investigate certain categorical aspects of Voevodsky's triangulated categories of motives. For this, various recollements for Grothendieck categories of enriched functors and their derived categories are established. In order to extend these recollements further with respect to Serre's localization, the concept of the (strict) Voevodsky property for Serre localizing subcategories is introduced. This concept is inspired by the celebrated Voevodsky theorem on homotopy invariant presheaves with transfers. We study determinant functors which are defined on a triangulated category and take values in a Picard category. The two main results are the existence of a universal determinant functor for every small triangulated category, and a comparison theorem for determinant functors on a triangulated category with a non-degenerate bounded t-structure and determinant functors on its heart. For a small triangulated category T we give a natural definition of groups K_0(T) and K_1(T) in terms of the universal determinant functor on T, and we show that K_i(T)=K_i(E) for i=0 and 1 if T has a non-degenerate …
We exhibit examples of triangulated categories which are neither the stable category of a Frobenius category nor a full triangulated subcategory of the homotopy category of a stable model category. Even more drastically, our examples do not admit any non-trivial exact functors to or from these algebraic respectively topological triangulated categories.
These notes provide an introduction to the theory of localization for triangulated categories. Localization is a machinery to formally invert morphisms in a category. We explain this formalism in some detail and we show how it is applied to triangulated categories.
In a triangulated symmetric monoidal closed category, there are natural dualities induced by the internal Hom. Given a monoidal functor f^* between two such catgories and adjoint couples (f^*,f_*) and (f_*,f^!), we prove the necessary commutative diagrams for f^* and f_* to respect certain dualities, for a projection formula to hold between them (as duality preserving functors) and for classical base change and composition formulas to hold when such duality preserving functors are composed. This framework is for example useful to define push-forwards for Witt groups.
We introduce and study several homological notions which generalise the discrete derived categories of D. Vossieck. As an application, we show that Vossieck discrete algebras have this property with respect to all bounded t-structures. We give many examples of triangulated categories regarding these notions.
Right triangulated categories can be thought of as triangulated categories whose shift functor is not an equivalence. We give intrinsic characterisations of when such categories have a natural extriangulated structure and are appearing as the (co-)aisle of a (co-)t-structure in an associated triangulated category.
We compute the Grothendieck group of certain 2-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories appearing naturally in the study of the link between quiver representations and Fomin--Zelevinsky's cluster algebras. In this setup, we also prove a generalization of Fomin--Zelevinsky's mutation rule.
Given a fixed tensor triangulated category S we consider triangulated categories T together with an S-enrichment which is compatible with the triangulated structure of T. It is shown that, in this setting, an enriched analogue of Brown representability holds when both S and T are compactly generated. Beligiannis and Marmaridis [\emph{Comm. in Algebra,} 22(12)(1994), 5021-5036] constructed the left and right triangulated structures on the stable categories of additive categories induced from some homological finite subcategories. We extend their results to slightly more general settings. As an application of our results we give some new examples of stable categories which have left or right triangulated structures from abelian model categories. An alternative approach to the classical Morel-Voevodsky stable motivic homotopy theory $SH(k)$ is suggested. The triangulated category of framed bispectra $SH_{nis}^{fr}(k)$ and effective framed bispectra $SH_{nis}^{fr,eff}(k)$ are introduced in the paper. Both triangulated categories only use Nisnevich local equivalences and have nothing to do with any kind of motivic equivalences. We prove that if the Auslander-Reiten triangles generate the relations for the Grothendieck group of a Hom-finite Krull-Schmidt triangulated category with a (co)generator, then the category has only finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable objects up to translation. This gives a triangulated converse to a theorem of Butler and Auslander-Reiten on the relations for Grothendieck groups. Our approach has applications in the context of Frobenius categories.

We put cluster tilting in ageneral framework by showing that any quotient of a triangulated category modulo a tilting subcategory (that is, a maximal one-orthogonal subcategory) carries an abelian structure. These abelian quotients turn out to be module categories of Goreisten algebras of dimension at most one.
In this note we discuss three notions of dimension for triangulated categories: Rouquier dimension, diagonal dimension and Serre dimension. We prove some basic properties of these dimensions, compare them and discuss open problems.
In this paper we relate triangulated category structures to the cohomology of small categories and define initial obstructions to the existence of an algebraic or topological enhancement. We show that these obstructions do not vanish in an example of triangulated category without models. We also obtain cohomological characterizations of pre-triangulated DG, A-infinity, and spectral categories.

The paper contains general results on the uniqueness of a DG enhancement for triangulated categories. As a consequence we obtain such uniqueness for the unbounded categories of quasi-coherent sheaves, for the triangulated categories of perfect complexes, and for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on quasi-projective schemes. If a scheme is projective then we also prove a strong uniqueness for the triangulated category of perfect complexes and for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. We give a characterisation of the extriangulated categories which admit the structure of a triangulated category. We show that these are the extriangulated categories where for every object $X$ in the extriangulated category, the morphism $0 \rightarrow X$ is a deflation and the morphism $X \rightarrow 0$ is an inflation.
We prove that the Balmer spectrum of a tensor triangulated category is homeomorphic to the Zariski spectrum of its graded central ring, provided the triangulated category is generated by its tensor unit and the graded central ring is noetherian and regular in a weak sense. There follows a classification of all thick subcategories, and the result extends to the compactly generated setting to yield a classification of all localizing subcategories as well as the analog of the telescope conjecture. This generalizes results of Shamir for commutative ring spectra.
The stable module category of a selfinjective algebra is triangulated, but need not have any nontrivial $t$-structures, and in particular, full abelian subcategories need not arise as hearts of a $t$-structure. The purpose of this paper is to investigate full abelian subcategories of triangulated categories whose exact structures are related, and more precisely, to explore relations between invariants of finite-dimensional selfinjective algebras and full abelian subcategories of their stable module categories.
The additivity of traces in certain tensor triangulated categories for endomorphisms of finite order of distinguished triangles is investigated. For the identity endomorphism this has been fully established by J. P. May ("The additivity of traces in triangulated categories", Adv. Math., 2001, 163, 34-73). By imposing extra conditions on the coefficients we show how May's result implies a stronger additivity.

In this article, we investigate the category $\mathcal{A}^G$ of equivariant objects of an additive category $\mathcal{A}$ with respect to an action of a finite group $G$. We show that if $G$ is solvable then we can reconstruct $\mathcal{A}$ from $\mathcal{A}^G$ via a finite sequence of equivariantization. We also consider the possibility of a triangulated structure on $\mathcal{A}^G$ canonical in certain sense when $\mathcal{A}$ is triangulated and give several instances in which $\mathcal{A}^G$ is indeed canonically triangulated.
This short note surveys the constructions of 3-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories with simple-minded collections due to Ginzburg and Kontsevich--Soibelman and the constructions of 2-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories with cluster-tilting objects due to Buan--Marsh--Reineke--Reiten--Todorov and Amiot, and includes a discussion on the normal form of 2-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories with cluster-tilting objects.
We show how matrix problems (bimodule categories) can be used in studying triangulated categories. Then we apply the general technique to the classification of stable homotopy types of polyhedra, find out the "representation types" of such problems and give a description of stable homotopy types in finite and tame cases.

Given a thick subcategory of a triangulated category, we define a colocalisation and a natural long exact sequence that involves the original category and its localisation and colocalisation at the subcategory. Similarly, we construct a natural long exact sequence containing the canonical map between a homological functor and its total derived functor with respect to a thick subcategory.
In this paper we prove an existence of some type of equivalences between triangulated categories of singularities for varieties of different dimensions. This class of equivalences generalizes so called Knörrer periodicity. As consequence we get equivalences between categories of D-branes of type B on Landau-Ginzburg models of different dimensions.
Lower bounds for the dimension of a triangulated category are provided. These bounds are applied to stable derived categories of Artin algebras and of commutative complete intersection local rings. As a consequence, one obtains bounds for the representation dimensions of certain Artin algebras.
In our previous article, we constructed an abelian category from any torsion pair on a triangulated category. This generalizes the heart of a $t$-structure and the ideal quotient by a cluster tilting subcategory. Recently, generalizing the quotient by a cluster tilting subcategory, Buan and Marsh showed that an integral preabelian category can be constructed as a quotient, from a rigid object in a triangulated category with some conditions. In this article, by considering a pair of torsion pairs, we make a simultaneous genralization of these two constructions.
We give analogues of the Auslander correspondence for two classes of triangulated categories satisfying certain finiteness conditions. The first class is triangulated categories with additive generators and we consider their endomorphism algebras as the Auslander algebras. For the second one, we introduce the notion of $[1]$-additive generators and consider their graded endormorphism algebras as the Auslander algebras. We define and characterise small support for complexes over non-Noetherian rings and in this context prove a vanishing theorem for modules. Our definition of support makes sense for any rigidly compactly generated tensor triangulated category. Working in this generality, we establish basic properties of support and investigate when it detects vanishing. We use pointless topology to relate support, the topology of the Balmer spectrum, and the structure of the idempotent Bousfield lattice.
In these notes we develop some basic theory of idempotents in monoidal categories. We introduce and study the notion of a pair of complementary idempotents in a triangulated monoidal category, as well as more general idempotent decompositions of identity. If $\mathbf{E}$ is a categorical idempotent then $\operatorname{End}(\mathbf{E})$ is a graded commutative algebra.
