This paper is an expository account of the theory of stable infinity categories. We prove that the homotopy category of a stable infinity category is triangulated, and that the collection of stable infinity categories is closed under a variety of constructions. We also explain how to construct the derived category of an abelian category (with enough projective objects) as the homotopy category of a suitable stable infinity category; moreover, we characterize this stable infinity category by a universal mapping property.
We describe a comparison between pretriangulated differential graded categories and certain stable infinity categories. Specifically, we use a model category structure on differential graded categories over k (a field of characteristic 0) where the weak equivalences are the Morita equivalences, and where the fibrant objects are in particular pretriangulated differential graded categories. We show the underlying infinity category of this model category is equivalent to the infinity category of k-linear stable infinity categories.
We prove a rectification theorem for enriched infinity-categories: If V is a nice monoidal model category, we show that the homotopy theory of infinity-categories enriched in V is equivalent to the familiar homotopy theory of categories strictly enriched in V. It follows, for example, that infinity-categories enriched in spectra or chain complexes are equivalent to spectral categories and dg-categories. A similar method gives a comparison result for enriched Segal categories, which implies that the homotopy theories of n-categories and (infinity,n)-categories defined by iterated infinity-categ…
We extend the Quillen Theorem Bn for homotopy fibers of Dwyer, et al. to similar results for homotopy pullbacks and note that these results imply similar results for zigzags in the categories of relative categories and k-relative categories, not only with respect to their Reedy structures but also their Rezk structure, which turns them into models for the theories of (infinity, 1)- and (infinity, k)-categories, respectively.
We prove the theorem stated in the title. More precisely, we show the stronger statement that every symmetric monoidal left adjoint functor between presentably symmetric monoidal infinity-categories is represented by a strong symmetric monoidal left Quillen functor between simplicial, combinatorial and left proper symmetric monoidal model categories.
Given symmetric monoidal infinity-categories C and D, subject to mild hypotheses on D, we define an infinity-categorical analog of the Day convolution symmetric monoidal structure on the functor category Fun(C, D). An E_infinity monoid for the Day convolution product is a lax monoidal functor from C to D.
The bulk of this paper is devoted to the comparison of several models for the theory of (infinity,2)-categories: that is, higher categories in which all k-morphisms are invertible for k > 2 (the case of (infinity,n)-categories is also considered). Our ultimate goal is to lay the foundations for a study of Tom Goodwillie's calculus of functors. To this end, we have included some simple applications to the theory of first derivatives.
In this short note we show that E-infinity quasi-categories can be replaced by strictly commutative objects in the larger category of diagrams of simplicial sets indexed by finite sets and injections. This complements earlier work on diagram spaces by Christian Schlichtkrull and the second author.

We adapt the classical framework of algebraic theories to work in the setting of (infinity,1)-categories developed by Joyal and Lurie. This gives a suitable approach for describing highly structured objects from homotopy theory. A central example, treated at length, is the theory of E_infinity spaces: this has a tidy combinatorial description in terms of span diagrams of finite sets. We introduce a theory of distributive laws, allowing us to describe objects with two distributing E_infinity stuctures. From this we produce a theory of E_infinity ring spaces. We also study grouplike objects, and…
This is the first of a series of papers on enriched infinity categories, seeking to reduce enriched higher category theory to the higher algebra of presentable infinity categories, which is better understood and can be approached via universal properties. In this paper, we introduce enriched presheaves on an enriched infinity category. We prove analogues of most familiar properties of presheaves. For example, we compute limits and colimits of presheaves, prove that all presheaves are colimits of representable presheaves, and prove a version of the Yoneda lemma.
The goal of this article is to emphasize the role of cubical sets in enriched categories theory and infinity-categories theory. We show in particular that categories enriched in cubical sets provide a convenient way to describe many infinity-categories appearing in the context of homological algebra.
We describe dual notions of tangent bundle for an infinity-topos, each underlying a tangent infinity-category in the sense of Bauer, Burke and the author. One of those notions is Lurie's tangent bundle functor for presentable infinity-categories, and the other is its adjoint. We calculate that adjoint for injective infinity-toposes, where it is given by applying Lurie's tangent bundle on infinity-categories of points.
The present work re-enacts the classical theory of t-structures reducing the classical definition given in *Faisceaux Pervers* to a rather primitive categorical gadget: suitable reflective factorization systems. This translation is only possible due to the virtues of the infinity-categorical setting. Once the basic theory of t-structure has been developed, a natural direction of research is to develop a comprehensive treatment of t-structure in the "torsio-centric" perspective: we apply the technology of factorization systems to the theory of Postnikov towers, to the proof of the abelianity of…
We construct a Grothendieck-Witt space for any stable infinity category with duality. If we apply our construction to perfect complexes over a commutative ring in which 2 is invertible we recover the classical Grothendieck-Witt space. Our Grothendieck-Witt space is a grouplike E-infinity space which is part of a genuine C_2-spectrum, the connective real K-theory spectrum.
We introduce the dendroidal analogs of the notions of complete Segal space and of Segal category, and construct two appropriate model categories for which each of these notions corresponds to the property of being fibrant. We prove that these two model categories are Quillen equivalent to each other, and to the monoidal model category for infinity-operads which we constructed in an earlier paper. By slicing over the monoidal unit objects in these model categories, we derive as immediate corollaries the known comparison results between Joyal's quasi-categories, Rezk's complete Segal spaces, and…
After developing the basic theory of locally cartesian localizations of presentable locally cartesian closed infinity-categories, we establish the representability of equivalences and show that univalent families, in the sense of Voevodsky, form a poset isomorphic to the poset of bounded local classes, in the sense of Lurie. It follows that every infinity-topos has a hierarchy of "universal" univalent families, indexed by regular cardinals, and that n-topoi have univalent families classifying (n-2)-truncated maps. We show that univalent families are preserved (and detected) by right adjoints t…
We introduce partially lax limits of infinity-categories, which interpolate between ordinary limits and lax limits. Most naturally occurring examples of lax limits are only partially lax; we give examples arising from enriched categories and operads. Our main result is a formula for partially lax limits and colimits in terms of the Grothendieck construction. This generalizes a formula of Lurie for ordinary limits and of Gepner-Haugseng-Nikolaus for fully lax limits.
An elementary theory of strict $\infty $-categories with application to concrete duality is given. All known famous dualities (Gelfand-Naimark, Pontryagin, Stone, etc.) are so-called natural. A criterion of existence of such a duality for higher categories is formulated. New examples are presented.
In this paper we introduce a functor, called the simplicial nerve of an A-infinity category, defined on the category of (small) A-infinity categories with values in simplicial sets. We prove that the simplicial nerve of any A-infinity category is an infinity category. This construction extends functorially the nerve construction for differential graded categories proposed by J.Lurie in Higher Algebra. We prove that if a differential graded category is pretriangulated in the sense of A.I.Bondal-M.Kapranov, then its nerve is a stable infinity category in the sense of J.Lurie.
We define natural A_infinity-transformations and construct A_infinity-category of A_infinity-functors. The notion of non-strict units in an A_infinity-category is introduced. The 2-category of (unital) A_infinity-categories, (unital) functors and transformations is described.
We develop a notion of an algebra over an infinity-operad with values in infinity-categories which is completely intrinsic to the formalism of dendroidal sets. Its definition involves the notion of a coCartesian fibration of dendroidal sets and extends Lurie's definition of a coCartesian fibration of simplicial sets. We show how, for a dendroidal set X, the coCartesian fibrations over X fit together to form an infinity-category coCart(X). Using a generalization of the Grothendieck construction, we prove that coCart(X) is equivalent to the infinity-category of algebras in infinity-categories ov…
Higher categorical structures are often defined by induction on dimension, which a priori produces only finite-dimensional structures. In this paper we show how to extend such definitions to infinite dimensions using the theory of terminal coalgebras, and we apply this method to Trimble's notion of weak n-category. Trimble's definition makes explicit the relationship between n-categories and topological spaces; our extended theory produces a definition of Trimble infinity-category and a fundamental infinity-groupoid construction. Furthermore, terminal coalgebras are often constructed as limits…
The homotopy theory of infinity-operads is defined by extending Joyal's homotopy theory of infinity-categories to the category of dendroidal sets. We prove that the category of dendroidal sets is endowed with a model category structure whose fibrant objects are the infinity-operads (i.e. dendroidal inner Kan complexes). This extends the theory of infinity-categories in the sense that the Joyal model category structure on simplicial sets whose fibrant objects are the infinity-categories is recovered from the model category structure on dendroidal sets by simply slicing over the point.
We compare two approaches to the homotopy theory of infinity-operads. One of them, the theory of dendroidal sets, is based on an extension of the theory of simplicial sets and infinity-categories which replaces simplices by trees. The other is based on a certain homotopy theory of marked simplicial sets over the nerve of Segal's category Gamma. In this paper we prove that for operads without constants these two theories are equivalent, in the precise sense of the existence of a zig-zag of Quillen equivalences between the respective model categories.
For a full subcategory B of a unital A_infinity-category C a quotient unital A_infinity-category `C/B' is defined. For differential graded categories such quotient is constructed by V.Drinfeld. Our construction is explicit and uses freely generated A_infinity-categories. The quotient D=`C/B' represents the A_infinity-2-functor A \mapsto A_\infty^u(C,A)_{modulo B}, which associates with a given unital A_infinity-category A the A_infinity-category of unital A_infinity-functors C -> A, whose restriction to B is contractible.
This monograph provides a coherent development of operads, infinity operads, and monoidal categories, equipped with equivariant structures encoded by an action operad. A group operad is a planar operad with an action operad equivariant structure. In the first three parts of this monograph, we establish a foundation for group operads and for their higher coherent analogues called infinity group operads. Examples include planar, symmetric, braided, ribbon, and cactus operads, and their infinity analogues. For example, with the tools developed here, we observe that the coherent ribbon nerve of th…
We describe several equivalent models for the infinity-category of infinity-local systems of chain complexes over a space using the framework of quasi-categories. We prove that the given models are equivalent as infinity-categories by exploiting the relationship between the differential graded nerve functor and the cobar construction. We use one of these models to calculate the quasi-categorical colimit of an infinity-local system in terms of a twisted tensor product.
We develop a theory of curved A-infinity-categories around equivalences of their module categories. This allows for a uniform treatment of curved and uncurved A-infinity-categories which generalizes the classical theory of uncurved A-infinity algebras. Furthermore, the theory is sufficiently general to treat both Fukaya categories and categories of matrix factorizations, as well as to provide a context in which unitification and categorification of pre-categories can be carried out. Our theory is built around two functors: the adjoint algebra functor U_e and the functor Q_*. The bulk of the pa…
We continue the study of enriched infinity categories, using a definition equivalent to that of Gepner and Haugseng. In our approach enriched infinity categories are associative monoids in an especially designed monoidal category of enriched quivers. We prove that, in case the monoidal structure in the basic category M comes from direct product, our definition is essentially equivalent to the approach via Segal objects. Furthermore, we compare our notion with the notion of category left-tensored over M, and prove a version of Yoneda lemma in this context. Version 2: An error in 2.6.2 corrected…
We construct an A_infinity-category D(C|B) from a given A_infinity-category C and its full subcategory B. The construction is similar to a particular case of Drinfeld's quotient of differential graded categories. We use D(C|B) to construct an A_infinity-functor of K-injective resolutions of a complex. The conventional derived category is obtained as the 0-th cohomology of the quotient of differential graded category of complexes over acyclic complexes.
We exhibit the simplex category $Δ$ and Segal's category $Γ$ as $\infty$-categorical localizations of the dendroidal categories $Ω_π$ and $Ω$ introduced by Moerdijk and Weiss. As an application we obtain an equivalence of $\infty$-categories between invertible $\infty$-operads and the $2$-Segal spaces of Dyckerhoff and Kapranov. Finally, we describe a cyclic version of the dendroidal category and explain how it $\infty$-localizes to Connes's cyclic category $Λ$.
For a differential graded k-quiver Q we define the free A-infinity-category FQ generated by Q. The main result is that for an arbitrary A-infinity-category A the restriction A-infinity-functor A_\infty(FQ,A) -> A_1(Q,A) is an equivalence, where objects of the last A-infinity-category are morphisms of differential graded k-quivers Q -> A.
We study (not necessarily connected) Z-graded A-infinity-algebras and their A-infinity-modules. Using the cobar and the bar construction and Quillen's homotopical algebra, we describe the localisation of the category of A-infinity-algebras with respect to A-infintity-quasi-isomorphisms. We then adapt these methods to describe the derived category of an augmented A-infinity-algebra A. The case where A is not endowed with an augmentation is treated differently. Nevertheless, when A is strictly unital, its derived category can be described in the same way as in the augmented case. Next, we compar…
We define a tracelike transformation to be a natural family of conjugation invariant maps $T_{x,C}: hom_C(x,x) \to hom_C(1,1)$ for all dualisable objects $x$ in any symmetric monoidal infinity-category $C$. This generalises the trace from linear algebra that assigns a scalar $Tr(f) \in k$ to any endomorphism $f:V \to V$ of a finite-dimensional $k$-vector space. Our main theorem computes the moduli space of tracelike transformations using the one-dimensional cobordism hypothesis with singularities. As a consequence we show that the trace $Tr$ can be uniquely extended to a tracelike transformati…
We establish a canonical and unique tensor product for commutative monoids and groups in an infinity-category C which generalizes the ordinary tensor product of abelian groups. Using this tensor product we show that E_n-(semi)ring objects in C give rise to E_n-ring spectrum objects in C. In the case that C is the infinity-category of spaces this produces a multiplicative infinite loop space machine which can be applied to the algebraic K-theory of rings and ring spectra. The main tool we use to establish these results is the theory of smashing localizations of presentable infinity-categories. …
We use the terms "$\infty$-categories" and "$\infty$-functors" to mean the objects and morphisms in an "$\infty$-cosmos." Quasi-categories, Segal categories, complete Segal spaces, naturally marked simplicial sets, iterated complete Segal spaces, $θ_n$-spaces, and fibered versions of each of these are all $\infty$-categories in this sense. We show that the basic category theory of $\infty$-categories and $\infty$-functors can be developed from the axioms of an $\infty$-cosmos; indeed, most of the work is internal to a strict 2-category of $\infty$-categories, $\infty$-functors, and natural tra…
We develop a stable analogue to the theory of cosimplicial frames in model cagegories; this is used to enrich all homotopy categories of stable model categories over the usual stable homotopy category and to give a different description of the smash product of spectra which is compared with the known descriptions; in particular, the original smash product of Boardman is identified with the newer smash products coming from a symmetric monoidal model of the stable homotopy category.
We show how matrix problems (bimodule categories) can be used in studying triangulated categories. Then we apply the general technique to the classification of stable homotopy types of polyhedra, find out the "representation types" of such problems and give a description of stable homotopy types in finite and tame cases.
We prove Carlos Simpson's "semi-strictification" (or "weak unit") conjecture in the case of infinity-groupoids. More precisely, we introduce two precise versions of the conjecture, the "general" and the "regular" conjecture, involving two different notions of "non-unital categories". The "general" version involve infinity-categories where absolutely all composition operations (horizontal, vertical and whiskering) are defined and compatible, the "regular" version involve infinity-categories where all the composition operations corresponding to "regular" pasting diagram are defined and compatibl…
We survey Lawvere theories at the level of infinity categories, as an alternative framework for higher algebra (rather than infinity operads). From a pedagogical perspective, they make many key definitions and constructions less technical. They are also better-suited than operads for equivariant homotopy theory and its relatives. Our main result establishes a universal property for the infinity category of Lawvere theories, which completely characterizes the relationship between a Lawvere theory and its infinity category of models. Many familiar properties of Lawvere theories follow directly. …
We construct what we call a Kirby category, a monoidal category whose morphisms are smooth 4-manifolds, projecting down to another monoidal category whose morphisms are orientable 3-manifolds, the projection being induced by the boundary map on manifolds. We construct a higher categorical generalization of such concepts and introduce the notion of ribbon $\infty$-categories, a generalization of braided monoidal $\infty$-categories (\cite{Lu1}), which gives rise to the concepts of $\infty$-links, $\infty$-4-manifolds as well as the more general notion of walled $\infty$-4-manifolds if one focus…
In a Brown category of cofibrant objects, there is a model for the mapping spaces of the hammock localization in terms of zig-zags of length 2. In this paper we show how to assemble these spaces into a Segal category that models the infinity-categorical localization of the Brown category.
A theory of $\infty$-properads is developed, extending both the Joyal-Lurie $\infty$-categories and the Cisinski-Moerdijk-Weiss $\infty$-operads. Every connected wheel-free graph generates a properad, giving rise to the graphical category $Γ$ of properads. Using graphical analogs of coface maps and the properadic nerve functor, an $\infty$-properad is defined as an object in the graphical set category $Set^{Γ^{op}}$ that satisfies some inner horn extension property. Symmetric monoidal closed structures are constructed in the categories of properads and of graphical sets. Strict $\infty$-proper…
We exploit the equivalence between $t$-structures and normal torsion theories on a stable $\infty$-category to show how a few classical topics in the theory of triangulated categories, i.e., the characterization of bounded $t$-structures in terms of their hearts, their associated cohomology functors, semiorthogonal decompositions, and the theory of tiltings, as well as the more recent notion of Bridgeland's slicings, are all particular instances of a single construction, namely, the tower of a morphism associated with a $J$-slicing of a stable $\infty$-category $\mathcal C$, where $J$ is a tot…
Tate objects have been studied by many authors. They allow us to deal with infinite dimensional spaces by identifying some more structure. In this article, we set up the theory of Tate objects in stable $(\infty,1)$-categories, while the literature only treats with exact categories. We will prove the main properties expected from Tate objects. This new setting includes several useful examples: Tate objects in the category of spectra for instance, or in the derived category of a derived algebraic object -- which can be thought as structured infinite dimensional vector bundle in derived setting.
We show that a profinite completion functor for (simplicial or topological) operads with good homotopical properties can be constructed as a left Quillen functor from an appropriate model category of infinity-operads to a certain model category of profinite infinity-operads. The construction is based on a notion of lean infinity-operad, and we characterize those infinity-operads weakly equivalent to lean ones in terms of homotopical finiteness properties. Several variants of the construction are also discussed, such as the cases of unital (or closed) infinity-operads and of infinity-categories…
Many definitions of weak and strict $\infty$-categories have been proposed. In this paper we present a definition for $\infty$-categories with strict associators, but which is otherwise fully weak. Our approach is based on the existing type theory Catt, whose models are known to correspond to weak $\infty$-categories. We add a definitional equality relation to this theory which identifies terms with the same associativity structure, yielding a new type theory Catt$_{sa}$, for strictly associative $\infty$-categories. We also provide a reduction relation which generates definitional equality, a…
There appeared not long ago a Reduction Formula for derived Hochschild cohomology, that has been useful e.g., in the study of Gorenstein maps and of rigidity w.r.t. semidualizing complexes. The formula involves the relative dualizing complex of a ring homomorphism, so brings out a connection between Hochschild homology and Grothendieck duality. The proof, somewhat ad hoc, uses homotopical considerations via a number of noncanonical projective and injective resolutions of differential graded objects. Recent efforts aim at more intrinsic approaches, hopefully upgradable to "higher" contexts--lik…
