We show that Nori's fundamental group scheme π(X,x) does not base change correctly under extension of the base field for certain smooth projective ordinary curves X of genus 2 defined over a field of characteristic 2.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field and let $A$ be a finitely generated $k-$algebra. We show that the scheme of n-dimensional representations of $A$ is smooth when $A$ is hereditary and coherent. We deduce from this the smoothness of the Nori-Hilbert scheme associated to $A.$
Let $Y$ be a smooth complex projective variety. We study the cohomology of smooth families of hypersurfaces $X\to B$ for $B\subset{\bf P}H^0(Y,O(d))$ a codimension $c$ subvariety. We give an asymptotically optimal bound on $c$ and $k$ for $d\to\infty$ for the space $H^k(X,\C)$ not to be spanned by the image of $H^k(Y\times B,\C)$, thus extending the validity of Lefschetz Hyperplane section Theorem and Nori's Connectivity Theorem. Next, we construct in the limit case explicit families of higher Chow groups which span the non trivial cohomology classes in $X$. We give examples of indecomposable …
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and let $A$ be a finitely generated $k-$algebra. The Nori - Hilbert scheme of $A$, parameterizes left ideals of codimension $n$ in $A,$ and it is well known to be smooth when $A$ is formally smooth. In this paper we will study the Nori - Hilbert scheme for $2-$Calabi Yau algebras. The main examples of these are surface group algebras and preprojective algebras. For the former we show that the Nori-Hilbert scheme is smooth for $n=1$ only, while for the latter we show that the smooth components that contain simple representations ar…
In this paper, we study a certain extension of Nori's fundamental group in the case where a base field is of characteristic 0 and give structure theorems about it. As a result, for a smooth projective curve with genus $g$>1, we prove that Nori's fundamental group acts faithfully on the category of unipotent bundles on the universal covering. In the case when $g=1$, we give a more finer result.
In this paper we extend the generalized algebraic fundamental group constructed by Esnault and Hogadi to general fibered categories using the language of gerbes. As an application we obtain a Tannakian interpretation for the Nori fundamental gerbe defined by Borne and Vistoli for non smooth non pseudo-proper algebraic stacks.
In this note, we prove that the F-fundamental group scheme is birational invariant for smooth projective varieties. We prove that the F-fundamental group scheme is naturally a quotient of the Nori fundamental group scheme. For elliptic curves, it turns out that the F-fundamental group scheme and the Nori fundamental group scheme coincides. We also consider an extension of the Nori fundamental group scheme in positive characteristic using semi-essentially finite vector bundles and prove that in this way, we do not get a non-trivial extension of the Nori fundamental group scheme for elliptic cur…
On $X$ projective smooth over an algebraically closed field, we show that if Nori's fundamental group scheme is trivial, then there are no nontrivial Nori semistable bundles of degree 0, that is the group scheme $π^S(X)$ studied in particular by Langer is trivial.
Let $k$ be a number field. We describe the category of Laumon 1-isomotives over $k$ as the universal category in the sense of Nori associated with a quiver representation built out of smooth proper $k$-curves with two disjoint effective divisors and a notion of $H^1_\dR$ for such "curves with modulus". This result extends and relies on the theorem of J. Ayoub and L. Barbieri-Viale that describes Deligne's category of 1-isomotives in terms of Nori's Abelian category of motives.
Let $S$ be a connected Dedekind scheme and $X$ be a proper smooth connected scheme over $S$ . Let $D$ a divisor with no multiplicity of $X$ such that the irreducible components of $D$ and as well their intersections are smooth over $S$. Now if we endow $X$ with the log structure associated with $D$ then the structure morphism from $X$ to $S$ is log-smooth. Let $x: S \to X$ be a $S$-point such that it doesn't intersect $D$. Then we prove that the maximal abelian quotient of the log Nori fundamental group scheme of $X$ fits in to an exact sequence of the form $0 \rightarrow (\mathbf{NS}^τ_{X/S,D…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective curve of genus $g$ over $k$. Fix an integer $n \geq 2$, and let $S^n(X)$ be the $n$-fold symmetric product of $X$. In this article we find the $S$-fundamental group scheme and Nori's fundamental group scheme of $S^n(X)$.
We generalize the construction of Raynaud of smooth projective surfaces of general type in positive characteristic that violate the Kodaira vanishing theorem. This corrects an earlier paper of the same purpose. These examples are smooth surfaces fibered over a smooth curve whose direct images of the relative dualizing sheaves are not nef, and they violate Kollár's vanishing theorem. Further pathologies on these examples include the existence of non-trivial vector fields and that of non-closed global differential 1-forms.
In this paper we introduce the local Nori fundamental group scheme of a reduced scheme or algebraic stack over a perfect field $k$. We give particular attention to the case of fields: to any field extension $K/k$ we attach a pro-local group scheme over $k$. We show how this group has many analogies, but also some crucial differences, with the absolute Galois group. We propose two conjectures, analogous to the classical Neukirch-Uchida Theorem and Abhyankar Conjecture, providing some evidence in their favor. Finally we show that the local fundamental group of a normal variety is a quotient of t…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 3$. Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective surface over $k$. Fix an integer $n \geq 1$ and let ${\mathcal{H}{\it ilb}}_X^n$ be the Hilbert scheme parameterizing effective $0$-cycles of length $n$ on $X$. The aim of the present article is to find the $S$-fundamental group scheme and Nori's fundamental group scheme of the Hilbert scheme $\mathcal{H}{\it ilb}_X^n$.
We discuss an experimental approach to open problems in toric geometry: are smooth projective toric varieties (i) projectively normal and (ii) defined by degree 2 equations? We discuss the creation of lattice polytopes defining smooth toric varieties as well as algorithms checking properties (i) and (ii) and further potential properties, in Particular a weaker version of (ii) asking for scheme-theoretic definition in degree 2.
We give further counterexamples to the conjectural construction of Bridgeland stability on threefolds due to Bayer, Macrì, and Toda. This includes smooth projective threefolds containing a divisor that contracts to a point, and Weierstraß elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. Furthermore, we show that if the original conjecture, or a minor modification of it, holds on a smooth projective threefold, then the space of stability conditions is non-empty on the blow up at an arbitrary point. More precisely, there are stability conditions on the blow up for which all skyscraper sheaves are semistable.
Recently, Kanemitsu has discovered a counterexample to the long-standing conjecture that the tangent bundle of a Fano manifold of Picard number one is (semi)stable. His counterexample is a smooth horospherical variety. There is a weaker conjecture that the tangent bundle of a Fano manifold of Picard number one is simple. We prove that this weaker conjecture is valid for smooth horospherical varieties of Picard number one. Our proof follows from the existence of an irreducible family of unbendable rational curves whose tangent vectors span the tangent spaces of the horospherical variety at gene…
We present counterexamples to Fujita's conjecture in positive characteristics. Precisely, we show that over any algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ and for any positive integer $m$, there exists a smooth projective surface $S$ with an ample Cartier divisor $A$ such that the adjoint linear system $|K_S+mA|$ is not free of base point. Our surface $S$ is a certain kind of generalization of Raynaud surfaces.
In our previous paper, we studied the category of semifinite bundles on a proper variety defined over a field of characteristic 0. As a result, we obtained the fact that for a smooth projective curve defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 with genus $g>1$, Nori fundamental group acts faithfully on the unipotent fundamental group of its universal covering. However, it was not mentioned about any explicit module structure. In this paper, we prove that the Chevalley-Weil formula gives a description of it.
M. Nori proved that on a projective smooth variety, a bundle is finite, (that is the ring it generates has dimension 0), if and only if it trivializes on a finite cover. In this note, we consider bundles of degree 0 on an elliptic curve. We prove that the dimension of the ring generated by such a bundle is the same as the dimension of a torsor trivializing the bundle (and is 1).
Let $U$ be an affine smooth curve defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. The Abhyankar Conjecture (proved by Raynaud and Harbater in 1994) describes the set of finite quotients of Grothendieck's étale fundamental group of $U$. In this paper, we consider a purely inseparable analogue of this problem, formulated in terms of Nori's profinite fundamental group scheme, and give a partial answer to it.
Let X be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field k. Nori constructed a category of vector bundles on X, called essentially finite vector bundles, which is reminiscent of the category of representations of the fundamental group (in characteristic zero). In fact, this category is equivalent to the category of representations of a pro--finite group scheme which controls all finite torsors. We show that essentially finite vector bundles coincide with those which become trivial after being pulled back by some proper and surjective morphism to X.
Summary: The Hodge conjecture asks whether rational Hodge classes on a smooth projective manifolds are generated by the classes of algebraic subsets, or equivalently by Chern classes of coherent sheaves. On a compact Kaehler manifold, Hodge conjecture is known to be false if algebraic subsets are replaced with analytic subsets. Here we show that it is even false that for a Kaehler manifold, Hodge classes are generated by Chern classes of coherent sheaves. We also show that finite free resolution do not in general exist for coherent sheaves on compact Kaehler manifolds.
For prime degree hypersurfaces of dimension at least 3, Mori asked if every smooth proper limit is still a hypersurface. Interestingly in dimensions 1 and 2, this is not the case. For example, Griffin constructed explicit families of quintic curves that give counterexamples in dimension 1 (Horikawa constructed similar examples for quintics in dimension 2). In this paper we propose a conjecture explaining these examples using Hacking and Prokhorov's work on Q-Gorenstein limits of the projective plane. In particular, if p is a prime number that is not a Markov number, we conjecture that any smoo…

Let $X$ be a smooth scheme over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic. M.V.~Nori and V.~Srinivas studied infinitesimal liftings of Frobenius morphism $F:X\to X$. Namely, given a Frobenius lifting $F_Y: Y\to Y$ over $W_{n-1}(k)$ the obstruction of lifting $F_Y$ over $W_n(k)$ is a class in $H^1(X, T_X\tensor B_1Ω^1_{X/k})$. We give a modified version of their theory and applications, in which we consider lifting $(n-1)$th iterated Frobenius $F^{n-1}:X\to X$ directly over $W_n(k)$.
For a vector bundle E on a model of a smooth projective curve over a p-adic number field a p-adic representation of the geometric fundamental group of X has been defined in work with Annette Werner if the reduction of E is strongly semistable of degree zero. In the present note we calculate the reduction of this representation using the theory of Nori's fundamental group scheme.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, and $V$ be a vector bundle over $X$. It is well known that if $X$ is a curve and $V$ is not strongly semistable, then some Frobenius pullback $(F^t)^*V$ is a direct sum of strongly semistable bundles. A natural question to ask is whether this still holds in higher dimension. Indranil Biswas, Yogish I. Holla, A.J. Parameswaran, and S. Subramanian showed that there is always a counterexample to this over any algebraically closed field of positive characteristic which is uncountable. However, we will produce …
A new approach to Nori's weak Lefschetz theorem is described. The new approach, which involves the dbar-method, avoids moving arguments and gives much stronger results. In particular, it is proved that if X and Y are connected smooth projective varieties of positive dimension and f is a holomorphic immersion of Y into X with ample normal bundle, then the image of the fundamental group of Y in that of X is of finite index. This result is obtained as a consequence of a direct generalization of Nori's theorem. The second part concerns a new approach to the theorem of Burns which states that a quo…
Let $K$ be a finitely generated field. We construct an $n$-dimensional linear system $\mathcal{L}$ of hypersurfaces of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ defined over $K$ such that each member of $\mathcal{L}$ defined over $K$ is smooth, under the hypothesis that the characteristic $p$ does not divide $\gcd(d, n+1)$ (in particular, there is no restriction when $K$ has characteristic $0$). Moreover, we exhibit a counterexample when $p$ divides $\gcd(d, n+1)$.
King's conjecture states that on every smooth complete toric variety $X$ there exists a strongly exceptional collection which generates the bounded derived category of $X$ and which consists of line bundles. We give a counterexample to this conjecture. This example is just the Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb{F}_2$ iteratively blown up three times, and we show by explicit computation of cohomology vanishing that there exist no strongly exceptional sequences of length 7.
By a result of Biswas and Dos Santos, on a smooth and projective variety over an algebraically closed field, a vector bundle trivialized by a proper and surjective map is essentially finite, that is it corresponds to a representation of the Nori fundamental group scheme. In this paper we obtain similar results for non-proper non-smooth algebraic stacks over arbitrary fields of characteristic $p>0$. As by-product we have the following partial generalization of the Biswas-Dos Santos' result in positive characteristic: on a pseudo-proper and inflexible stack of finite type over $k$ a vector bundl…
Let $X$ be a projective, connected and smooth scheme defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. In this paper we prove that a tower of finite torsors (i.e., under the action of finite $k$-group schemes) can be dominated by a single finite torsor. Let $G$ be any finite $k$-group scheme and $Y$ any $G$--torsor over $X$ pointed in $y\,\in\, Y(k)$; we define over $Y$, which may not be reduced, in a very natural way the categories of Nori-semistable and essentially finite vector bundles. These categories are proved to be Tannakian. Their Galois $k$-group schemes $π^S(Y,\,y)$ and $π^N(Y,\,y)$, …
For a smooth complex projective variety X defined over a number field, we have filtrations on the Chow groups depending of the choice of realizations. If the realization consists of mixed Hodge structure without any additional structure, we can show that the obtained filtration coincides with the filtration of Green and Griffiths, assuming the Hodge conjecture. In the case the realizations contain Hodge structure and etale cohomology, we prove that if the second graded piece of the filtration does not vanish, it contains a nonzero element which is represented by a cycle defined over a field of…
We show that the automorphism group of a certain subclass of smooth Gizatullin surfaces with a distinguished and rigid extended divisor is generated by automorphisms of A1-fibrations. Moreover, such surfaces provide examples of smooth Gizatullin surfaces with a non-transitive action of the automorphism group. Thus, they represent counterexamples to Gizatullin's conjecture. For such surfaces we give explicit orbits of the natural action of the automorphism group in some special cases. Further, we present their automorphism groups as amalgamated products of two subgroups.
Conditional on the Lefschetz standard conjecture in degree 2, we prove that the index of a Brauer class on a smooth projective variety divides a fixed power of its period, uniformly in smooth families. In the other direction, we reinterpret in more classical terms recent work of Hotchkiss which gives Hodge-theoretic lower bounds on the index of Brauer classes. We also prove versions of our results over arbitrary algebraically closed base fields, and as an application construct qualitatively new counterexamples to the integral Tate conjecture.
We study maps from a smooth scheme to a motivic sphere in the Morel-Voevodsky ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy category, i.e., motivic cohomotopy sets. Following Borsuk, we show that, in the presence of suitable hypotheses on the dimension of the source, motivic cohomotopy sets can be equipped with functorial abelian group structures. We then explore links between motivic cohomotopy groups, Euler class groups à la Nori-Bhatwadekar-Sridharan and Chow-Witt groups. We show that, again under suitable hypotheses on the base field $k$, if $X$ is a smooth affine $k$-variety of dimension $d$, then the Euler c…
We prove a semiample generalization of Poonen's Bertini Theorem over a finite field that implies the existence of smooth sections for wide new classes of divisors. The probability of smoothness is computed as a product of local probabilities taken over the fibers of the morphism determined by the relevant divisor. We give several applications including a negative answer to a question of Baker and Poonen by constructing a variety (in fact one of each dimension) which provides a counterexample to Bertini over finite fields in arbitrarily large projective spaces. As another application, we determ…
