Let f be a newform of weight two, prime level p. If D is a fundamental discriminant, define the twisted L-function L(f,D,s) to be the L-function associated to the twist of f by the quadratic character of conductor D.
In this paper we consider the question of computing the family of twisted central values {L(f,D,1) : |D| <= x} for some x, by using an explicit version of Waldspurger's formula relating the central values L(f,D,1) to the |D|-th Fourier coefficient of weigth 3/2 modular forms in Shimura correspondence with f.
We prove an asymptotic for the second moment of quadratic twists of a modular $L$-function. This was previously known conditionally on GRH by the work of Soundararajan and Young.
Zagier proved that the generating series for the traces of singular moduli is a \textit{weakly holomorphic} modular form of weight 3/2 on $Γ_0(4)$. Bruinier and Funke extended the results of Zagier to modular curves of arbitrary genus. Zagier also showed that the twisted traces of singular moduli are generated by a weakly holomorphic modular form of weight 3/2. In this paper, we study the extension of Zagier's result for the twisted traces of singular moduli to congruence subgroups $Γ_0(N)$. As an application, we study congruences for the twisted traces of singular moduli of weakly holomorphic…
We prove that the central values of additive twists of a cuspidal $L$-function define a quantum modular form in the sense of Zagier, generalizing recent results of Bettin and Drappeau. From this we deduce a reciprocity law for the twisted first moment of multiplicative twists of cuspidal $L$-functions, similar to reciprocity laws discovered by Conrey for the twisted second moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions. Furthermore we give an interpretation of quantum modularity at infinity for additive twists of $L$-functions of weight 2 cusp forms in terms of the corresponding functional equations.
Cheng constructed product expansions from twists of elliptic genera of symmetric powers of K3 surfaces that are related to M_24 moonshine. We study which of them are Siegel modular forms. If the predicted level is non-composite, they are modular, and their powers can be represented as products of rescaled Borcherds products.
We use relative trace formula to prove a non-vanishing result and a subconvexity result for the twisted base change $L$-functions associated to Hilbert modular forms whose local components at ramified places are some supercuspidal representations. This generalizes the work of Feigon and Whitehouse.
We describe algorithms for computing central values of twists of $L$-functions associated to Hilbert modular forms, carry out such computations for a number of examples, and compare the results of these computations to some heuristics and predictions from random matrix theory.
We present theoretical and numerical evidence for a random matrix theoretic approach to a conjecture about vanishings of quadratic twists of certain L-functions
In this paper, we study central values of the family of quadratic twists of modular $L$-functions of moduli $8p$, with $p$ ranging over odd primes. Assuming the truth of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we establish a positive proportion non-vanishing result for the corresponding $L$-values.
We study the second moment of the central values of quadratic twists of a modular $L$-function. Unconditionally, we obtain a lower bound which matches the conjectured asymptotic formula, while on GRH we prove the asymptotic formula itself.
We investigate non-correlation of Fourier coefficients of Maass forms against a class of real oscillatory functions, in analogy to known results with Frobenius trace functions. We also establish an equidistribution result for twisted horocycles as a consequence of our non-correlation result.
We define Eisenstein series twisted by modular symbols on the group SL(n), generalizing a construction of the first author. We show that, in the case of series attached to the minimal parabolic subgroup, our series converges for all points in a suitable cone. We conclude with examples for SL(2) and SL(3).
We introduce the concept of quadratic modular symbol and study how these symbols are related to quadratic p-adic L-functions. These objects were introduced in [3] in the case of modular curves. In this paper, we discuss a method to attach quadratic modular symbols and quadratic p-adic L-functions to more general Shimura curves.
In this paper we establish certain identities connecting $p$-adic hypergeometric functions with 4-th twisted Kloosterman sheaf sum. To prove these identities we express certain character sum over finite field in terms of special values of $p$-adic hypergeometric functions. One conjecture of Evans behaves as a bridge to connect $p$-adic hypergeometric functions with Kloosterman sheaf sum. We also connect $p$-adic hypergeometric functions with Fourier coefficients of certain modular forms.
We study sums of additively twisted Fourier coefficients of a holomorphic cusp form, a Maass cusp form, and the symmetric-square lift of a holomorphic cusp form. We obtain bounds that are uniform with respect to both the form and the terms of the additive twist. We also improve a bound on a sum of additively twisted Fourier coefficients of a holomorphic cusp form that have also been twisted by a nonlinear exponential term. This last bound is uniform with respect to the terms of the additive twist but it is not uniform with respect to the form.
We consider the question of the correlation of Fourier coefficients of modular forms with functions of algebraic origin. We establish the absence of correlation in considerable generality (with a power saving of Burgess type) and a corresponding equidistribution property for twisted Hecke orbits. This is done by exploiting the amplification method and the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields, relying in particular on the ell-adic Fourier transform introduced by Deligne and studied by Katz and Laumon.
We construct isomorphisms between spaces of vector-valued modular forms for the dual Weil representation and certain spaces of scalar-valued modular forms in the case that the underlying finite quadratic module $A$ has order $p$ or $2p$, where $p$ is an odd prime. The isomorphisms are given by twisted sums of the components of vector-valued modular forms. Our results generalize work of Bruinier and Bundschuh to the case that the components $F_γ$ of the vector-valued modular form are antisymmetric in the sense that $F_γ = -F_{-γ}$ for all $γ\in A$. As an application, we compute restrictions of …
In this article, we investigate the variance of local $\varepsilon$-factor for a modular form with arbitrary nebentypus with respect to twisting by a quadratic character. We detect the type of the supercuspidal representation from that. For modular forms with trivial nebentypus, similar results are proved by Pacetti. Our method however is completely different from that of Pacetti and we use representation theory crucially. For ramified principal series (with $\infdiv{p}{N}$ and $p$ odd) and unramified supercuspidal representations of level zero, we relate these numbers with the Morita's $p$-ad…
In 2008, M. Kaneko made several interesting observations about the values of the modular j invariant at real quadratic irrationalities. The values of modular functions at real quadratics are defined in terms of their cycle integrals along the associated geodesics. In this paper we prove some of the conjectures of M. Kaneko for a general modular function.
Using half-integral weight modular forms we give a criterion for the existence of real quadratic $p$-rational fields. For $p=5$ we prove the existence of infinitely many real quadratic $p$-rational fields.
We define "values" of the elliptic modular j-function at real quadratic irrationalities by using Hecke's hyperbolic Fourier expansions, and present some observations based on numerical experiments.
We compute a lower bound of the canonical height on quadratic twists of certain elliptic curves. Also we show a simple method for constructing families of quadratic twists with an explicit rational point. % from cubic polynomials. Using the above lower bound, we show that the explicit rational point is primitive as an element of the Mordell--Weil group.
In this paper we prove a relation between the period of an elliptic curve and the period of its real and imaginary quadratic twists. This relation is often misstated in the literature.
Given elliptic modular forms f and g satisfying certain conditions on their weights and levels, we prove (a quantitative version of the statement) that there exist infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields K and characters chi of the ideal class group Cl_K such that L(1/2, f_K \times chi) \neq 0 and L(1/2, g_K \times chi) \neq 0. The proof is based on a non-vanishing result for Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms combined with the theory of Yoshida liftings.
Let $\mathscr{S}_k^+(\cn,Φ)$ denote the space generated by Hilbert modular newforms (over a fixed totally real field $K$) of weight $k$, level $\cn$ and Hecke character $Φ$. We show how to decompose $\mathscr{S}_k^+(\cn,Φ)$ into direct sums of twists of other spaces of newforms. This sheds light on the behavior of a newform under a character twist: the exact level of the twist of a newform, when such a twist is itself a newform, and when a newform may be realized as the twist of a primitive newform. These results were proven for elliptic modular forms by Hijikata, Pizer and Shemanske by employ…
We construct an Euler system attached to a weight 2 modular form twisted by a Groessencharacter of an imaginary quadratic field, and apply this to bounding Selmer groups.
We investigate the average rank in the family of quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, when the curves are ordered using the canonical height of their lowest non-torsion rational point.
These are notes for four lectures given at the 2010 CIMPA Research School "Automorphic Forms and L-functions" in Weihai, China. The lectures focused on a Burgess-like subconvex bound for twisted Hilbert modular L-functions published jointly with Valentin Blomer in the same year. They discussed the proof in some detail, especially how spectral theory can be used to estimate the relevant shifted convolution sums efficiently. They also discussed briefly an application for the number of representations by a totally positive ternary quadratic form over a totally real number field.
We develop an elementary divisor theory for the unimodular and the modular group over quadratic field extensions and quaternion algebras. In particular, we investigate which sets of elementary divisors can occur. Under an additional hypothesis we establish a correspondence of unimodular and modular double cosets.
We calculate the first and second moments of L-functions in the family of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve E over F_q[x], asymptotically in the limit as the degree of the twists tends to infinity. We also compute moments involving derivatives of L-functions over quadratic twists, enabling us to deduce lower bounds on the correlations between the analytic ranks of the twists of two distinct curves.
Bayer and Blanco-Chacón have recently defined quadratic modular symbols for the Shimura curves X(D,N) attached to Eichler orders of level N of an indefinite quaternion rational algebra of discriminant D. In this paper, we give a cohomological interpretation of these quadratic modular symbols. Explicit computations for the homology of some Shimura curves are also provided.
Given a family of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, we investigate the average rank in the subfamily of twists having a nontorsion rational point of almost minimal height. We show in particular that the average analytic rank is greater than one.
For $f$ a primitive holomorphic cusp form of even weight $k \geq 4$, level $N$, and $χ$ a Dirichlet character mod $Q$ with $(Q,N)=1$, we establish a new hybrid subconvexity bound for $L(1/2 + it, f_χ)$, which improves upon all known hybrid bounds. This is done via amplification and taking advantage of a shifted convolution sum of two variables defined and analyzed in a recent paper of Hoffstein and Hulse.
We use the spectral theory of Hilbert-Maass forms for real quadratic fields to obtain the asymptotics of some sums involving the number of representations as a sum of two squares in the ring of integers.
In this paper, we investigate the properties of well-rounded twists of a given ideal lattice of an imaginary quadratic field $K$. We show that every ideal lattice $I$ of $K$ has at least one well-rounded twist lattice. Moreover, we provide an explicit algorithm to compute all well-rounded twists of $I$.
We investigate the number of curves having a rational point of almost minimal height in the family of quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve. This problem takes its origin in the work of Hooley, who asked this question in the setting of real quadratic fields. In particular, he showed an asymptotic estimate for the number of such fields with almost minimal fundamental unit. Our main result establishes the analogue asymptotic formula in the setting of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve.
We investigate the regulators of elliptic curves with rank 1 in some families of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve. In particular, we formulate some conjectures on the average size of these regulators. We also describe an efficient algorithm to compute explicitly some of the invariants of an odd quadratic twist of an elliptic curve (regulator, order of the Tate-Shafarevich group, etc.) and we discuss the numerical data that we obtain and compare it with our predictions.
