We investigate the number of curves having a rational point of almost minimal height in the family of quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve. This problem takes its origin in the work of Hooley, who asked this question in the setting of real quadratic fields. In particular, he showed an asymptotic estimate for the number of such fields with almost minimal fundamental unit. Our main result establishes the analogue asymptotic formula in the setting of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve.
Given a family of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, we investigate the average rank in the subfamily of twists having a nontorsion rational point of almost minimal height. We show in particular that the average analytic rank is greater than one.
We compute a lower bound of the canonical height on quadratic twists of certain elliptic curves. Also we show a simple method for constructing families of quadratic twists with an explicit rational point. % from cubic polynomials. Using the above lower bound, we show that the explicit rational point is primitive as an element of the Mordell--Weil group.
We formulate a conjecture about the distribution of the canonical height of the lowest non-torsion rational point on a quadratic twist of a given elliptic curve, as the twist varies. This conjecture seems to be very deep and we can only prove partial results in this direction.
We investigate in a statistical fashion the smallest height of a rational point on a Fano hypersurface defined over the field of rational numbers. Along the way, we establish an average version of Manin's conjecture about the number of rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties for the complete family of Fano hypersurfaces of fixed degree and dimension.
We prove that a positive proportion of squarefree integers are congruent numbers such that the canonical height of the lowest non-torsion rational point on the corresponding elliptic curve satisfies a strong lower bound.
We obtain new results concerning the Sato--Tate conjecture on the distribution of Frobenius angles over parametric families of elliptic curves with a rational parameter of bounded height.
We conjecture a lower bound for the minimal canonical height of non-torsion rational points on a natural density 1 subset of the sextic twist family of Mordell curves. We then establish a lower bound that yields a partial result towards this conjecture.
Let $d\ge 2$ be an integer, let $c(t)$ be any rational map, and let $f_t(z) := (z^d+t)/z$ be a family of rational maps indexed by t. For each algebraic number $t$, we let $h_{f_t}(c(t))$ be the canonical height of $c(t)$ with respect to the rational map $f_t$. We prove that the map $H(t):=h_{f_t}(c(t))$ (as $t$ varies among the algebraic numbers) is a Weil height.
A weighted projective stack is a stacky quotient $\mathscr P(\mathbf a)=(\mathbf A^n-\{0\})/\mathbb G_m$, where the action of $\mathbb G_m$ is with weights $\mathbf a\in\mathbb Z^n_{>0}$. Examples are: the compactified moduli stack of elliptic curves $\mathscr P(4,6)$ and the classifying stack of $μ_m$-torsors $Bμ_m=\mathscr P(m)$. We define heights on the weighted projective stacks. The heights generalize the naive height of an elliptic curve and the absolute discriminant of a torsor. We use the heights to count rational points. We find the asymptotic behaviour for the number of rational poin…
Silverman proved a height inequality for jointly regular family of rational maps and the author improved it for jointly regular pairs. In this paper, we provide the same improvement for jointly regular family; if S is a jointly regular set of rational maps, then \sum_{f\in S} \dfrac{1}{°f} h\bigl(f(P) \bigr) > (1+ \dfrac{1}{r}) f(P) - C where r = \max_{f\in S} r(f).
We consider the practical computation of rational points on y^2=x(x^2+ax+b). The algebra necessary for a 4-descent procedure is described. A simple further descent is then described which only uses integer arithmetic. Numerous examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of this extra descent. Currently, the largest point found has height 51.15 or 102.3, depending on which height normalisation you use.
Let $F$ be a univariate polynomial or rational fraction of degree $d$ defined over a number field. We give bounds from above on the absolute logarithmic Weil height of $F$ in terms of the heights of its values at small integers: we review well-known bounds obtained from interpolation algorithms given values at $d+1$ (resp. $2d+1$) points, and obtain tighter results when considering a larger number of evaluation points.
We obtain a tight, up to a logarithmic factor, upper bound on the number of solutions to the equation $$ \sum_{j=1}^n a_j \frac{s_j}{r_j} =a_0, \qquad $$ with variables $r_1,...,r_n$ in an arbitrary box at the origin and variables $s_1,..., s_n$ in an essentially arbitrary translation of this box. We apply this result to get an upper bound on the number of stochastic matrices with rational entries of bounded height.
Motivated by a result of van der Poorten and Shparlinski for univariate power series, Bell and Chen prove that if a multivariate power series over a field of characteristic 0 is D-finite and its coefficients belong to a finite set then it is a rational function. We extend and strengthen their results to certain power series whose coefficients may form an infinite set. We also prove that if the coefficients of a univariate D-finite power series `look like' the coefficients of a rational function then the power series is rational. Our work relies on the theory of Weil heights, the Manin-Mumford …
In this short note we show that the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields puts strong restrictions on the coordinates of rational points on elliptic curves. For the proof we use a variant of the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields formulated by Mochizuki. As an application, we generalize a result of Silverman on elliptic non-Wieferich primes.
We consider D-finite power series $f(z)=\sum a_n z^n$ with coefficients in a number field $K$. We show that there is a dichotomy governing the behaviour of $h(a_n)$ as a function of $n$, where $h$ is the absolute logarithmic Weil height. As an immediate consequence of our results, we have that either $f(z)$ is rational or $h(a_n)>[K:\mathbb{Q}]^{-1}\cdot \log(n)+O(1)$ for $n$ in a set of positive upper density and this is best possible when $K=\mathbb{Q}$.
Let $C$ be an algebraic curve embedded transversally in a power $E^N$ of an elliptic curve $E$. In this article we produce a good explicit bound for the height of all the algebraic points on $C$ contained in the union of all proper algebraic subgroups of $E^N$. The method gives a totally explicit version of the Manin-Dam'janenko Theorem in the elliptic case and it is a generalisation of previous results only proved when $E$ does not have Complex Multiplication.
We generalize a result of Frey [Fre88] on the Selmer group of twists of elliptic curves over Q with Q-rational torsion points to elliptic curves defined over number fields of small degree K with a K-rational point. We also provide examples of elliptic curves coming from [Zyw15] that satisfy the conditions of our Theorem B.
Let E be an elliptic curve over the rationals. Let L be an infinite Galois extension of the rationals with uniformly bounded local degrees at almost all primes. We will consider the infinite extension L(E_tor) of the rationals where we adjoin all coordinates of torsion points of E. In this paper we will prove an effective lower bound for the height of non-zero elements in L(E_tor) that are not a root of unity.
This paper presents a new result concerning the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve with a single point of order two that does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over its two-division field. We prove that at least half of all the quadratic twists of such an elliptic curve have arbitrarily large 2-Selmer rank, showing that the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of such an elliptic curve differs from the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve having either no rational two-torsion o…
In this paper we prove a formula for the number of rational points of bounded height relative to all the generators of the cone of effective divisor for a toric variety over a number field.
The height of a rational number $p/q$ is denoted by $h(p/q)$ and equals $\text{max}(|p|,|q|)$ provided p/q is written in lowest terms. The height of a rational tuple $(x_1,...,x_n)$ is denoted by $h(x_1,...,x_n)$ and equals $\text{max}(h(x_1),...,h(x_n))$. Let $G_n={x_i+1=x_k: i,k \in {1,...,n}} \cup {x_i \cdot x_j=x_k: i,j,k \in {1,...,n}}$. Let $f(1)=1$, and let $f(n+1)=2^{(2^{(f(n))})}$ for every positive integer n. We conjecture: (1) if a system $S \subseteq G_n$ has only finitely many solutions in rationals $x_1,...,x_n$, then each such solution $(x_1,...,x_n)$ satisfies $h(x_1,...,x_n) \…
A conjecture of Batyrev and Manin predicts the asymptotic behaviour of rational points of bounded height on smooth projective varieties over number fields. We prove some new cases of this conjecture for conic bundle surfaces equipped with some non-anticanonical height functions. As a special case, we verify these conjectures for the first time for some smooth cubic surfaces for height functions associated to certain ample line bundles.
Let $Γ$ be a finitely generated subgroup of the multiplicative group $\G_m^2(\bar{Q})$. Let $p(X,Y),q(X,Y)\in\bat{Q}$ be two coprime polynomials not both vanishing at $(0,0)$; let $ε>0$. We prove that, for all $(u,v)\inΓ$ outside a proper Zariski closed subset of $G_m^2$, the height of $p(u,v)/q(u,v)$ verifies $h(p(u,v)/q(u,v))>h(1:p(u,v):q(u,v))-ε\max(h(uu),h(v))$. As a consequence, we deduce upper bounds for (a generalized notion of) the g.c.d. of $u-1,v-1$ for $u,v$ running over $Γ$.
Let $f \in Q(z)$ be a polynomial or rational function of degree 2. A special case of Morton and Silverman's Dynamical Uniform Boundedness Conjecture states that the number of rational preperiodic points of $f$ is bounded above by an absolute constant. A related conjecture of Silverman states that the canonical height $\hat{h}_f(x)$ of a non-preperiodic rational point $x$ is bounded below by a uniform multiple of the height of $f$ itself. We provide support for these conjectures by computing the set of preperiodic and small height rational points for a set of degree 2 maps far beyond the range …
On the twisted Fermat cubic, an elliptic divisibility sequence arises as the sequence of denominators of the multiples of a single rational point. We prove that the number of prime terms in the sequence is uniformly bounded. When the rational point is the image of another rational point under a certain 3-isogeny, all terms beyond the first fail to be primes.
The distribution of rational points of bounded height on algebraic varieties is far from uniform. Indeed the points tend to accumulate on thin subsets which are images of non-trivial finite morphisms. The problem is to find a way to characterise the points in these thin subsets. The slopes introduced by Jean-Benoît Bost are a useful tool for this problem. These notes will present several cases in which this approach is fruitful. We shall also describe the notion of locally accumulating subvarieties which arises when one considers rational points of bounded height near a fixed rational point.
We give new instances where Chabauty--Kim sets can be proved to be finite, by developing a notion of "generalised height functions" on Selmer varieties. We also explain how to compute these generalised heights in terms of iterated integrals and give the first explicit nonabelian Chabauty result for a curve $X/\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobian has Mordell-Weil rank larger than its genus.
We give the first explicit examples beyond the Chabauty-Coleman method where Kim's nonabelian Chabauty program determines the set of rational points of a curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ or a quadratic number field. We accomplish this by studying the role of $p$-adic heights in explicit nonabelian Chabauty.
In this paper, we study bounds for the number of rational points on twists C' of a fixed curve C over a number field K, under the condition that the group of K-rational points on the Jacobian J' of C' has rank smaller than the genus of C'. The main result is that with some explicitly given finitely many possible exceptions, we have a bound of the form 2r + c, where r is the rank of J'(K) and c is a constant depending on C. For the proof, we use a refinement of the method of Chabauty-Coleman; the main new ingredient is to use it for an extension field of K_v, where v is a place of bad reduction…
When we have a morphism f : P^n -> P^n, then we have an inequality \frac{1}{°f} h(f(P)) +C > h(P) which provides a good upper bound of $h(P)$. However, if $f$ is a rational map, then \frac{1}{°f} h(f(P))+C cannot be an upper bound of h(P). In this paper, we will define the $D$-ratio of a rational map $f$ which will replace the degree of a morphism in the height inequality of h(P).
We study genus one curves that arise as 2-, 3- and 4-coverings of elliptic curves. We describe efficient algorithms for testing local solubility and modify the classical formulae for the covering maps so that they work in all characteristics. These ingredients are then combined to give explicit bounds relating the height of a rational point on one of the covering curves to the height of its image on the elliptic curve. We use our results to improve the existing methods for searching for rational points on elliptic curves.
We apply the theory of height zeta functions to study the asymptotic distribution of rational points of bounded height on projective equivariant compactifications of semi-direct products.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over the rationals. We will consider the infinite extension $\mathbb{Q}(E_{\text{tor}})$ of the rationals where we adjoin all coordinates of torsion points of $E$. In this paper we will prove an explicit lower bound for the height of non-zero elements in $\mathbb{Q}(E_{\text{tor}})$ that are not a root of unity, only depending on the conductor of the elliptic curve. As a side result we will give an explicit bound for a small supersingular prime for an elliptic curve.
This paper investigates which integers can appear as 2-Selmer ranks within the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve E defined over a number field K with E(K)[2] = Z/2Z. We show that if E does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]), then subject only to constant 2-Selmer parity, each non-negative integer appears infinitely often as the 2-Selmer rank of a quadratic twist of E. If E has a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]) but not over K, then we prove the same result for 2-Selmer ranks greater than or equal to r_2, the number of complex places of K. We also obtain results abo…
A conjecture of Manin predicts the asymptotic distribution of rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties. In this paper we use conic bundles to obtain correct lower bounds or a wide class of surfaces over number fields for which the conjecture is still far from being proved. For example, we obtain the conjectured lower bound of Manin's conjecture for any del Pezzo surface whose Picard rank is sufficiently large, or for arbitrary del Pezzo surfaces after possibly an extension of the ground field of small degree.
We study the distribution of rational points of bounded height on a one-sided equivariant compactification of $\mathrm{PGL}_2$ using automorphic representation theory of $\mathrm{PGL}_2$.
We investigate the average rank in the family of quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, when the curves are ordered using the canonical height of their lowest non-torsion rational point.
Let $n\geq 2$ be an integer, $F$ a number field, $O_F$ the integral closure of $\mathbb{Z}$ in $F$ and $N$ a positive multiple of $n$. The paper deals with degree $N$ polynomials $P(T) \in O_F[T]$ such that the superelliptic curve $Y^n=P(T)$ has twists $Y^n=d\cdot P(T)$ without $F$-rational points. We show that this condition holds if the Galois group of $P(T)$ over $F$ has an element which fixes no root of $P(T)$. Two applications are given. Firstly, we prove that the proportion of degree $N$ polynomials $P(T) \in O_F[T]$ with height bounded by $H$ and such that the associated curve satisfies…
Let $α$ be a complex number. We show that there is a finite subset $F$ of the ring of the rational integers $\mathbb{Z}$, such that $F\left[ α\right] =\mathbb{Z}\left[ α\right]$, if and only if $α$ is an algebraic number whose conjugates, over the field of the rationals, are all of modulus one, or all of modulus greater than one. This completes the answer to a question, on the numbers satisfying the height reducing property, posed in [3].
Given an extension of number fields $E \subset F$ and a projective variety $X$ over $F$, we compare the problem of counting the number of rational points of bounded height on $X$ with that of its Weil restriction over $E$. In particular, we consider the compatibility with respect to the Weil restriction of conjectural asymptotic formulae due to Manin and others. Using our methods we prove several new cases of these conjectures. We also construct new counterexamples over every number field.
We present some results about the number of rational points on a certain family of curves defined over a finite field. In a small number of cases the curves have more rational points than expected. Fibonacci numbers make an appearance, as do cyclotomic polynomials.
Let F : W --> V be a dominant rational map between quasi-projective varieties of the same dimension. We give two proofs that h_V(F(P)) >> h_W(P) for all points P in a nonempty Zariski open subset of W. For dominant rational maps F : P^n --> P^n, we give a uniform estimate in which the implied constant depends only on n and the degree of F. As an application, we prove a specialization theorem for equidimensional dominant rational maps to semiabelian varieties, providing a complement to Habegger's recent theorem on unlikely intersections.
We investigate in this paper the vanishing at $s=1$ of the twisted $L$-functions of elliptic curves $E$ defined over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ (where $\mathbb{F}_q$ is a finite field of $q$ elements and characteristic $\geq 5$) for twists by Dirichlet characters of prime order $\ell \geq 3$, from both a theoretical and numerical point of view. In the case of number fields, it is predicted that such vanishing is a very rare event, and our numerical data seems to indicate that this is also the case over function fields for non-constant curves. For constant curves, we adapt th…
Given a pair of elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ over the rational field $\mathbb Q$ whose $j$-invariants are not simultaneously 0 or 1728, Kuwata and Wang proved the existence of infinitely many square-free rationals $d$ such that the $d$-quadratic twists of $E_1$ and $E_2$ are both of positive rank. We construct infinite families of pairs of elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ over $\mathbb Q$ such that for each pair there exist infinitely many square-free rationals $d$ for which the $d$-quadratic twists of $E_1$ and $E_2$ are both of rank at least 2.
We provide an asymptotic estimate for the number of rational points of bounded height on a non-singular conic over the rationals. The estimate is uniform in the coefficients of the underlying quadratic form.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over the rationals without complex multiplication. The field $F$ generated by all torsion points of $E$ is an infinite, non-abelian Galois extension of the rationals which has unbounded, wild ramification above all primes. We prove that the absolute logarithmic Weil height of an element of $F$ is either zero or bounded from below by a positive constant depending only on $E$. We also show that the Néron-Tate height has a similar gap on $E(F)$ and use this to determine the structure of the group $E(F)$.
We searched up to height $10^7$ for rational points on diagonal quartic surfaces. The computations fill several gaps in earlier lists computed by Pinch, Swinnerton-Dyer, and Bright.
Let $K$ denote a number field and a finite set $S$ of places of $K$ and $ϕ:\PP^n\rightarrow\PP^n$ be rational morphism defined over $K$. The main result of this paper proves that there are only finitely many twists of $ϕ$ defined over $K$ which have good reduction at all places outside $S$. This answers a question of Silverman in the affirmative.
