For a polynomial ring $R=k[x_1,...,x_n]$, we present a method to compute the characteristic cycle of the localization $R_f$ for any nonzero polynomial $f\in R$ that avoids a direct computation of $R_f$ as a $D$-module. Based on this approach, we develop an algorithm for computing the characteristic cycle of the local cohomology modules $H^r_I(R)$ for any ideal $I\subseteq R$ using the Čech complex. The algorithm, in particular, is useful for answering questions regarding vanishing of local cohomology modules and computing Lyubeznik numbers. These applications are illustrated by examples of computations using our implementation of the algorithm in Macaulay~2.
Let $A$ be a noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $A$, and $M$ an $A$--module. Some uniform theorems on the artinianness of certain local cohomology modules are proven in a general situation. They generalize and imply previous results about the artinianness of some special local cohomology modules in the graded case.
Let S be a toric algebra over a field K of characteristic 0 and let I be a monomial ideal of S. We show that the local cohomology modules H^i_I(S) are of finite length over the ring of differential operators D(S;K), generalizing the classical case of a polynomial algebra S. As an application, we compute the characteristic cycles of some local cohomology modules.
Let $R$ be a noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$ such that $\dim R/\fa=1$ and $M$ a finite $R$--module. We will study cofiniteness and some other properties of the local cohomology modules $\lc^{i}_{\fa}(M)$. For an arbitrary ideal $\fa$ and an $R$--module $M$ (not necessarily finite), we will characterize $\fa$--cofinite artinian local cohomology modules. Certain sets of coassociated primes of top local cohomology modules over local rings are characterized.
Let $\mathfrak{a}$ be an ideal of local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module and $n\in\Bbb N$. It is shown that some results concerning cominimaxness of formal local cohomology modules.
Let $R$ be a polynomial or power series ring over a field $k$. We study the length of local cohomology modules $H^j_I(R)$ in the category of $D$-modules and $F$-modules. We show that the $D$-module length of $H^j_I(R)$ is bounded by a polynomial in the degree of the generators of $I$. In characteristic $p>0$ we obtain upper and lower bounds on the $F$-module length in terms of the dimensions of Frobenius stable parts and the number of special primes of local cohomology modules of $R/I$. The obtained upper bound is sharp if $R/I$ is an isolated singularity, and the lower bound is sharp when $R/…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with non-zero identity, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$, $M$ a finite $R$--module and $X$ an arbitrary $R$--module. Here, we show that, in the Serre subcategories of the category of $R$--modules, how the generalized local cohomology modules, the ordinary local cohomology modules and the extension modules behave similarly at the initial points. We conclude some Artinianness and cofiniteness results for $\lc^{n}_{\fa}(M, X)$, and some finiteness results for $\Supp_R(\lc^{n}_{\fa}(M, X))$ and $\Ass_R(\lc^{n}_{\fa}(M, X))$.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring that is a smooth $\mathbb Z$-algebra. For each ideal $I$ of $R$ and integer $k$, we prove that the local cohomology module $H^k_I(R)$ has finitely many associated prime ideals. This settles a crucial outstanding case of a conjecture of Lyubeznik asserting this finiteness for local cohomology modules of all regular rings.
This first part of the paper describes the support of top graded local cohomology modules. As a corrolary one obtains a simple criteria for the vanishing of these modules and also the fact that they have finitely many minimal primes. The second part of this paper constructs examples of cohomological Hilbert functions which are not of polynomial type.

Let $(R,m)$ be a local Noetherian ring, let $I\subset R$ be any ideal and let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module. In 1990 Craig Huneke conjectured that the local cohomology modules $H^i_I(M)$ have finitely many associated primes for all $i$. In this paper I settle this conjecture by constructing a local cohomology module of a local $k$-algebra with an infinite set of associated primes, and I do this for any field $k$.
In this work we describe the local cohomology of reflexive modules of rank one over normal semigroup rings with respect to monomial ideals. Using our description we show that the problem of classifying maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules of rank one can be rephrased in terms of finding integral solutions to certain sets of linear inequalities.
Let $R$ be a noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$, and $M$ an $R$--module. We prove that for a finite module $M$, if $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is minimax for all $i\geq r\geq 1$, then $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is artinian for $i\geq r$. A Local-global Principle for minimax local cohomology modules is shown. If $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is coatomic for $i\leq r$ ($M$ finite) then $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is finite for $i\leq r$. We give conditions for a module, which is locally minimax to be a minimax module. A non-vanishing theorem and some vanishing theorems are proved for local cohomology modules.
In continuation of [1] we study associated primes of Matlis duals of local cohomology modules (MDLCM). We combine ideas from Helmut Zöschinger on coassociated primes of arbitrary modules with results from [1], [4], [5], [6] and obtain partial answers to questions which were left open in [1]. These partial answers give further support for conjecture $(*)$ from [1] on the set of associated primes of MDLCMs. In addition, and also inspired by ideas from Zöschinger, we prove some non-finiteness results of local cohomology.
Let $R$ be a finitely generated positively graded algebra over a Noetherian local ring $B$, and $\mathfrak{m} = [R]_+$ be the graded irrelevant ideal of $R$. We provide a local criterion characterizing the $B$-freeness of all the local cohomology modules $\text{H}_\mathfrak{m}^i(M)$ of a finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$. We show that fiber-full modules are exactly the ones that satisfy this criterion. When we change $B$ by an arbitrary Noetherian ring $A$, we study the fiber-full locus of a module in $\text{Spec}(A)$: we show that the fiber-full locus is always an open subset of $\text…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with non-zero identity, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$, and $X$ an $R$--module. In this paper, for fixed integers $s, t$ and a finite $\fa$--torsion $R$--module $N$, we first study the membership of $\Ext^{s+t}_{R}(N, X)$ and $\Ext^{s}_{R}(N, H^{t}_{\fa}(X))$ in Serre subcategories of the category of $R$--modules. Then we present some conditions which ensure the existence of an isomorphism between them. Finally, we introduce the concept of Serre cofiniteness as a generalization of cofiniteness and study this property for certain local cohomology modules.
Let $M$ be a finitely generated bigraded module over the standard bigraded polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,...,x_m, y_1,...,y_n]$, and let $Q=(y_1,...,y_n)$. The local cohomology modules $H^k_Q(M)$ are naturally bigraded, and the components $H^k_Q(M)_j=\Dirsum_iH^k_Q(M)_{(i,j)}$ are finitely generated graded $K[x_1,...,x_m]$-modules. In this paper we study the regularity of $H^k_Q(M)_j$, and show in several cases that $\reg H^k_Q(M)_j$ is linearly bounded as a function of $j$.
Let $\mathfrak a$ denote an ideal of a local ring $(R, \mathfrak m).$ Let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module. There is a systematic study of the formal cohomology modules $\varprojlim \HH^i(M/\mathfrak a^nM), i \in \mathbb Z.$ We analyze their $R$-module structure, the upper and lower vanishing and non-vanishing in terms of intrinsic data of $M,$ and its functorial behavior. These cohomology modules occur in relation to the formal completion of the punctured spectrum $\Spec R \setminus V(\mathfrak m).$ As a new cohomological data there is a description on the formal grade $\fgrade(\mathfra…
Using local cohomology and algebraic D-Modules, we generalize a comparison theorem between relative de Rham cohomology and Dwork cohomology due to N. Katz, A. Adolphson and S. Sperber.
We discuss the Hochschild cohomology of the category of D-modules associated to an algebraic stack. In particular we describe the Hochschild cohomology of the category of torus-equivariant D-modules as the cohomology of a D-module on the loop space of the quotient stack. Finally, we give an approach for understanding the Hochschild cohomology of D-modules on general stacks via a relative compactification of the diagonal. This work is motivated by a desire to understand the support theory (in the sense of Benson-Iyengar-Krause) of D-modules on stacks.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, let $R$ be a commutative $k$-algebra, and let $M$ be a torsion free $R$-module of rank one with a connection $\nabla$. We consider the Lie-Rinehart cohomology with values in $End_{R}(M)$ with its induced connection, and give an interpretation of this cohomology in terms of the integrable connections on $M$. When $R$ is an isolated singularity of dimension $d\geq2$, we relate the Lie-Rinehart cohomology to the topological cohomology of the link of the singularity, and when $R$ is a quasi-homogenous hypersurface of dimension two, we g…
This article constructs Von Neumann invariants for constructible complexes and coherent D-modules on compact complex manifolds, generalizing the work of the author on coherent L 2-cohomology. We formulate a conjectural generalization of Dingoyan's L 2-Mixed Hodge structures in terms of Saito's Mixed Hodge Modules and give partial results in this direction. 2020 AMS Classification: 32J27.
For a projective variety V in P^n over a field of characteristic zero, with homogeneous ideal I in A = k[x0,x1,...,xn], we consider the local cohomology modules H^i_I(A). These have a structure of holonomic D-module over A, and we investigate their filtration by simple D-modules. In case V is nonsingular, we can describe completely these simple components in terms of the Betti numbers of V.
We describe algorithms for computing various functors for algebraic D-modules, i.e. systems of linear partial differential equations with polynomial coefficients. We will give algorithms for restriction, tensor product, localization, and local cohomology groups for all degrees.
We give some basics about homological algebra of difference representations. We consider both the difference-discrete and the difference-rational case. We define the corresponding cohomology theories and show the existence of spectral sequences relating these cohomology theories with the standard ones.
Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties admit actions of associated Weyl groups on their cohomology space of each degree. In this paper, we consider the module structure of the cohomology spaces of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties of type $A$. We define a subset of the Bialynicki-Birula basis of the cohomology space so that they become a module generator set of the cohomology module of each degree. We then use those generators to construct permutation submodules of the degree two cohomology module and show that they form a permutation module decomposition. Our construction is consistent…
After works by Katz, Monsky, and Adolphson-Sperber, a comparison theorem between relative de Rham cohomology and Dwork cohomology is established in a paper by Dimca-Maaref-Sabbah-Saito in the framework of algebraic D-modules. We propose here an alternative proof of this result. The use of Fourier transform techniques makes our approach more functorial.
Given a $D$-module $M$ generated by a single element, and a polynomial $f$, one can construct several $D$-modules attached to $M$ and $f$ and can define the notion of the (generalized) $b$-function following M. Kashiwara. These modules are closely related to the localization and the local cohomology of $M$. We show that the $b$-function, if it exists, controls these modules and present general algorithms for computing these modules and the $b$-function (if it exists) without any further assumptions. For these algorithms, we reformulate the localization algorithm for $D$-modules.
We prove that algebraic de Rham cohomology as a functor defined on smooth $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebras is formally étale in a precise sense. This result shows that given de Rham cohomology, one automatically obtains the theory of crystalline cohomology as its unique functorial deformation. To prove this, we define and study the notion of a pointed $\mathbb{G}_a^{\mathrm{perf}}$-module and its refinement which we call a quasi-ideal in $\mathbb{G}_a^{\mathrm{perf}}$ -- following Drinfeld's terminology. Our main constructions show that there is a way to "unwind" any pointed $\mathbb{G}_a^{\text{perf}}…
We study cohomology support loci of regular holonomic D-modules on complex abelian varieties, and obtain conditions under which each irreducible component of such a locus contains a torsion point. One case is that both the D-module and the corresponding perverse sheaf are defined over a number field; another case is that the D-module underlies a grade-polarizable mixed Hodge module with a Z-structure. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof for Simpson's result that Green-Lazarsfeld sets are translates of subtori by torsion points.
We show that the total cohomology of the canonical bundle of a smooth projective variety, seen as a module over an exterior algebra, splits into a natural direct sum of submodules which are generated in degree zero and have a linear free resolution. This improves a previous result of the first two authors.
In this paper we present algorithms that compute certain local cohomology modules associated to a ring of polynomials containing the rational numbers. In particular we are able to compute the local cohomological dimension of algebraic varieties in characteristic zero. Our approach is based on the theory of D-modules.
We study cup products in integral cohomology of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on a K3 surface and present a computer program for this purpose. In particular, we deal with the question, which classes can be represented by products of lower degrees.
The goal of this article is to prove a comparison theorem between rigid cohomology and cohomology computed using the theory of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules. To do this, we construct a specialisation functor from Le Stum's category of constructible isocrystals to the derived category of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules. For objects `of Frobenius type', we show that the essential image of this functor consists of overholonomic $\mathscr{D}^\dagger$-modules, and lies inside the heart of the dual constructible t-structure. We use this to give a more global construction of Caro's specialisation…
We prove the finiteness and compatibility with base change of the (phi,Gamma)-cohomology and the Iwasawa cohomology of arithmetic families of (phi,Gamma)-modules. Using this finiteness theorem, we show that a family of Galois representations that is densely pointwise refined in the sense of Mazur is actually trianguline as a family over a large subspace. In the case of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve, we determine the behavior at all points.
We survey some recent applications of p-adic cohomology to machine computation of zeta functions of algebraic varieties over finite fields of small characteristic, and suggest some new avenues for further exploration.
We prove that Chow groups of certain non-commutative Hilbert schemes have a basis consisting of monomials in Chern classes of the universal bundle. Furthermore, we realize the cohomology of non-commutative Hilbert schemes as a module over the Cohomological Hall algebra.
In this article we prove conditions under which a certain parabolic group cohomology space over a finite field F is a faithful module for the Hecke algebra of Katz modular forms over an algebraic closure of F. These results can e.g. be used to compute Katz modular forms of weight one with methods of linear algebra over F. This is essentially Chapter 3 of my thesis.
We extend the work of M.Borovoi on the nonabelian Galois cohomology of linear reductive algebraic groups over number fields to a general base scheme. As an application, we obtain new results on the arithmetic of such groups over global function fields.
This is is a survey of applications of Fontaine's theory of p-adic representations of local fields (Phi-Gamma-modules) to Galois cohomology of local fields and explicit formulas for the Hilbert symbol in relation with two-dimensional local objects.
We show that the cohomology intersection number of a twisted Gauss-Manin connection with regularization condition is a rational function. As an application, we obtain a new quadratic relation associated to period integrals of a certain family of K3 surfaces.
For a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ and a smooth and proper formal scheme $\mathscr{X}$ over the ring of integers of a finite and totally ramified extension $K$ of $W(k)[1/p]$, we propose a cohomological construction of the Breuil-Kisin modules attached to the $p$-adic étale cohomology $H^i_{\mathrm{ét}}(\mathscr{X}_{\overline{K}},\mathbf{Z}_p)$. We then prove that our proposal works when $p>2$, $i < p-1$, and the crystalline cohomology of the special fiber of $\mathscr{X}$ is torsion-free in degrees $i$ and $i+1$.
The van Est map is a map from Lie groupoid cohomology (with respect to a sheaf taking values in a representation) to Lie algebroid cohomology. We generalize the van Est map to allow for more general sheaves, namely to sheaves of sections taking values in a (smooth or holomorphic) $G$-module, where $G$-modules are structures which differentiate to representations. Many geometric structures involving Lie groupoids and stacks are classified by the cohomology of sheaves taking values in $G$-modules and not in representations, including $S^1$-groupoid extensions and equivariant gerbes. Examples of …
